This PlayStation ‘advert’, supposedly created for Sony in India, has been picking up negative press in The Guardian and on feminist websites in the last couple of days. Simultaneously, various marketing industry pundits have been singing its praises.
We’re reliably informed, however, it’s not a bona fide PlayStation advert.

Oh okay at least this time it’s not my fault..!
Comment by Ben Furneaux — Jun 27, 2007 @ 8:27 pm
Err… why don’t you link to the ad, or embed it. This is teh internet… I’m not actually going to go out and look for it.
Comment by Austin Storm — Jun 27, 2007 @ 8:50 pm
That’s a great add…it should be used for the PSP & PS3
Comment by fireras — Jun 27, 2007 @ 9:10 pm
Wow, that must be the best advertisement I have seen in a long time. Comical, to the point, true, and informative.
Comment by Unreal.Blender — Jun 27, 2007 @ 9:27 pm
hmm.. I actually prefer women to gaming… i guess this ad isn’t aimed at me.
Comment by Caleb — Jun 27, 2007 @ 10:01 pm
I think it’s a good advert, and pretty funny.
Anyone with a poor sense of humour and can’t take this with a light heart needs take a chill pill
Comment by Jonathan — Jun 27, 2007 @ 10:07 pm
wow………..
almost as mind blowing as the laughing baby!
Comment by Ricky — Jun 27, 2007 @ 11:39 pm
Dont see how its feminist, seems ok, just talking about his girlfriend cheating ect..
Comment by TheWormhole — Jun 27, 2007 @ 11:58 pm
@TheWormhole
The point is, that’s the girlfriend talking, and boring the guy
Seems like really good and creative things are getting a lot of negative reaction these days. I’m not sure I like where the society’s going with this.
Comment by Max S. — Jun 28, 2007 @ 12:21 am
So if it isn’t a “..,bona fide Playstation advert,” what is it? Did Sony still create it? Who paid to have it published? I must assume this thing didn’t just pop out of thin air and appear in Indian magazines.
Is there someone out there trying to create a bad public image for Sony? Should we be looking out for people who are posting fake Sony advertisements, websites, and general media, so we can report this scam to you?
Or is this something Sony did make, and just refuses to classify it as an “advert.” I’m interested in knowing.
Comment by Jason — Jun 28, 2007 @ 1:28 am
No of course its not… and Sony never put graffiti all over the US and then denied it.
I’m sorry I just have no faith in the Sony marketing division. I could hear they’d used a giant laser to etch the words “Sony rulez” in giant words on the moon and I might be inclined to believe them.
Comment by Morberis — Jun 28, 2007 @ 2:05 am
This ad doesn’t make sense anyway. But it sucks for Sony to have MORE bad press.
Comment by Nick Mitchell — Jun 28, 2007 @ 2:32 am
I don’t get it….
How can you get bored of someone who is fustrating you? >.>
Comment by salavaster — Jun 28, 2007 @ 3:30 am
Oh god. In the all I want for christmas is a psp debacle I lost faith in Sony and bought a 360. If this ad is an official sony ad it redeems everything. If this ad is official, regardless of what backpedalling Sony is now trying to do to distance themselves from it, then I am buying a PS3 and going back to being a Sony fanboy. This ad is made of win.
Comment by Anon — Jun 28, 2007 @ 5:47 am
The thing that irks me is the phrase in the bottom corner, and I quote:
Because your girlfriend bores you shitless.
I wouldn’t be as offended if it said something along the lines of ‘For when your girlfriend bores you shitless’, but it would still probably drive off any potential consumers that happened to be female. Of course, this (supposedly) wasn’t created for advertisement in North America; however, if I saw an advertisement like that where I live, I’d avoid anything Playstation related for the rest of my life.
Comment by Banapple — Jun 28, 2007 @ 5:50 am
CLASSIC!!! change it to PS3 and slap it on a t-shirt! That would be the best use. Sell it at E3 or in the PSstore.

bahahhaa thats awesome! Good ad!

WARNING! IF YOU MEET Shifty906 ONLINE, BE AWARE THAT HE IS RACIST!
I just want to warn anybody who might bump into this person online as to what behaviour this guy has.
- since he could tell from my accent that i’m not english or american, he told me: “put your Koran up your a*s” and “put your burritos up your a*s”
- he referred to terrorists as “nig*ers”
- he insulted me with the usual stupidity that you sometimes meet online.
Of course i reported him on ps3reporting.com.
I hope this message can be of help to other online R6: Vegas gamers so that they can avoid him like the plague.

No such thing as bad press!
Sod the feminist. They’re the ugly fat ones.
I want SONY to release a big sticker for my PS3 which reads ‘My other toy has tits’.
Comment by Mick — Jun 28, 2007 @ 11:26 am
Very funny ad, but I can see how people may be offended by it!
But like someone above said, its TRUE, girlfriends do run their mouth and bore you today with the same stuff they bored you with yesterday!
Comment by Shank_Town — Jun 28, 2007 @ 11:29 am
@19
Your other toy should wear a T-Shirt with this Ad on it so eveyone stares….. in the attempt to read it of course.
What a great Ad
Comment by Neil — Jun 28, 2007 @ 12:38 pm
Austin Storm, the image is there. It is probably the adblocker in your browser that blocks it, because it says ‘ad’ in the URL. At least, for me, the Adblock extension in Firefox blocks it -_-;;. Stupid extension.

As a girl, a gamer and a girlfriend, I can’t really say this ad’s doing anything for me, much less making me want to buy a PS3. It’s not even original, as far as these things go - it’s basically the same premise that Coke Zero marketed their ‘diet coke for guys’ with last year.
I suppose I’m not the target demographic for this ad, but assuming the point of marketing is to sell as much stuff to as many people as possible, wouldn’t Sony do themselves a favour with marketing that’s more inclusive?
Comment by JD — Jun 28, 2007 @ 2:10 pm
@23
Your grammar is really excellent, I imagine you are very well educated, much like a girl i once knew. Basically, she spoke and i nodded trying desparatly to hide my boredom long enough for the fun times to start once the wine took hold and turned her into a raging nympho. Trust me, it was worth it.
Happy days.

“Sony Playstation, because your girlfriend bores you!” has been around for ages and ages. It was funny then, and it’s funny now. Ha ha ha!
The more stink kicked up about it, the more it’ll be seen, and the more people will agree with it’s sentiment. Ha ha!
Comment by LordOfRuin — Jun 28, 2007 @ 4:26 pm
“We’re reliably informed, however, it’s not a bona fide PlayStation advert”
What does that mean? It’s another example of the ambiguous nature of this “semi-offical” blog.
I suspect that means that it was produced by an independent marketing firm rather than sony itself.
But as that is how the vast majority of advertising is done - it’s as bonafide as anything else. No doubt this blog itself is operated on a similar basis.
Please elaborate!

I made this ad into a t-shirt if you want yours come check it out at my website http://www.cafepress.com/creatiff
Comment by Creatiff — Jun 29, 2007 @ 2:37 am
Creatiff - you took off the subtlty. So now you’ve just got a ripped off design, yeah well done! Would have considered it otherwise. Oh well another lost opportunity.
Comment by LordOfRuin — Jun 29, 2007 @ 12:32 pm
I can see the new advert slogan now “Buy PS3 - because you’re incapable of keeping a girlfriend”
Comment by Pootle — Jun 29, 2007 @ 7:19 pm
It seems to me like Sony made this advertisement just to get media attention, then denied that they made it just to save their ass.
“We’re reliably informed, however, it’s not a bona fide PlayStation advert.”
Yes, because you’re not payed by Sony, but you get to talk to them, right? Doesn’t anybody find it weird that threespeech is owned by an ad firm called Ramp Industry, the same ad firm that Sony hired for their alliwantforchristmasisapsp stealth marketing.
I like Sony products, especially the PS2, but I can’t stand being lied to all the time. Come on Sony, you don’t need all this stealth marketing and astroturfing, let your awesome products speak for themselves.
Comment by Nirvash — Jun 30, 2007 @ 5:51 am
What I think Sony or the marketing firm should have done to try and not anger the feminists and so on too much was make a similar advert but directed at girls, for example a guy talking about football or something.
If this was printed in a magazine then the second advert could be put on the next page or later in the magazine and then it wouldn’t have made it so inclusive like post 23 says.
Might have at least helped Sony save themselves a bit.
Comment by underdunk — Jun 30, 2007 @ 7:28 pm
Remember everyone, don’t throw any mud at Sony, they didn’t create the ad.
“We’re reliably informed, however, it’s NOT a bona fide PlayStation advert.”
Comment by bigshynepo — Jul 1, 2007 @ 7:52 am
I don’t see what this “AD” has to do with anything! OK so your’e girlfriend bores you, then break up with her. I’m quite sure there are plenty of times when girls are bored shitless by their boyfriends too! Are they insinuating that the any game system is a replacement for a real girl!? If so they should go play their video games and at night, hug and kiss their pillows and pretend their real girls!!!!! NERDS. It’s a stupid AD PROMO if it’s real. They should re think it, it could be much better.
Comment by Tom2x — Jul 1, 2007 @ 4:04 pm
Also, I would be willing to bet that it is not real ad, a big Corporation such as SONY would never let an ad go that said (When your girlfriend bore you shitless!) It just wouldn’t float with the executives and it would have a very negative impact on the female market segment. And by the way SONY could use all the customers they can get right now, what with all the “Console wars and all”!
Comment by Tom2x — Jul 1, 2007 @ 4:09 pm
Would sony be so stupid as to publish such a one audience ad? I mean, if so this is why Nintendo will win and Playstation will lose. Targeting the small minority of sexist male gamers..
Yes I am female, yes I am a nintendo fangirl. But hey I own a PS2!! Wouldn’t a guy prefer a girl who plays games with him? GG bad advertising
Comment by sperks — Jul 2, 2007 @ 5:03 am
Where the he*k is the ad?
