After its delay a while back, things have been quiet with regards to Home. However Home is progressing well, with the latest update of the beta (build 0.7.7) just being released.
The following details on 0.7.7 have been posted over at the PS3 forums:
* There’s a new building in the world, although it’s currently one that can’t be entered
* You are finally able to enter your Home Space’s patio
* You can now use your own pictures in your Home Space
* A game launching option has been added, though it is not functioning completely at the present time
* The cinema’s movie theatres have transferred from the second floor to the first floor
* America, Japan, and Europe each have their own server now
Head over to the PS3 forums for the latest news on home.

When are we getting our hands on this ?

Opps i forgot to say
Let us all BETA test it, we all except the flaws… we are used to it now.
Comment by komp — Nov 27, 2007 @ 12:42 pm
Glad to see that home is still on track, question is are we all still going to be able to access the beta by the end of the year as mentioned at TGS 07? All those rumours flying around it being out on the 29th would make sense as it’s a thursday and that’s when you update the stores and so on. But I can wait as long as it’s good when it gets here =)

I can see part of the appeal, but, I have to be honest, I think I’ll just wander about the first few times to see what’s all the fuss is about, then no more. I don’t see what’s so amazing about being able to speak to someones avatar. So what? It’s just another person somewhere, and likely to have nothing terribly interesting to say. I wont have any amazing stories to tell, so you’ll walk your little guy up to me and we’ll swap greetings, amuse each other for a minute with wonderings at our new found friendship, find we haven’t got the same games, and have nothing in common other than owning a PS3. Weird. If I wanna play a game, I’ll just start it from the XMB. If I want a some downloadable content, please please don’t force me to walk about in this Home environment to find it. I love the idea of a meeting place that I can choose to go to. Perhaps have little areas to discuss games, but I can see it being a bit flat.
So, my question to all replies onwards, what exactly do you see yourself using this for? I’m not taking the piss or anything, I’m genuinely interested. I have a mic, and rarely use it. I have a few “chums”, but we never message or meet in games. Will your experience of the PS3 change once Home hits?
Perhaps it’s just me. I use my unit as a movie player, and a games machine. I have no interest in the social side of it at all. FaceFook is about as close to social techno crud that I can stand, and that’s shite!
On the otherhand, gaming is just bloody brilliant, and I love it. Warhawk still excites me. I get a giddy barely contained rush when I’m loading that bad boy up, grinning like a kid (and oh boy, I haven’t been a kid for quite some time, though my girlfriend thinks otherwise).

All I want to know is the release date.
Also why did they say there would be a october release when they are no where near completion.
Talk about a crappy estimate.
Welll suppose this is sony we’re talking about here.

Oh great! Separate servers for each region.
Heaven forbid we might want to interact with people who didn’t buy their PS3 in the same region as me. *sigh*.
But at least this is a sign of open beta. Isn’t it? I mean only US’ers was officially allowed in close beta I believe?
Comment by Tiran Kenja — Nov 27, 2007 @ 1:42 pm
@ 4 - I’m an Englishman beta trialing Home at the mo so I’m pretty optimistic about a world wide release.
If not I understand the need to localise and test apps before their release in different locations.
Comment by Lusaka — Nov 27, 2007 @ 1:56 pm
so tonight hopefully we can expect more than 3 people online
but again SONY,
how and even better in GODS name would you put 3 different worlds alive if the purpose of home is 1 Virtual world
Ps Where is Vegas Video Poker & Piyomoto,
since its released already is the previous stoneage in the US & JAPAN
and a royal flush is the same hand as here
Comment by Darkie — Nov 27, 2007 @ 1:59 pm
I wonder why this info has been posted, previously Sony threatened anybody who released even the slightest detail about Home, now we have info being released on forums and spread by the “semi-official” blog.
Doesn’t sound anywhere near finished though, and I think those asking for a public beta are pissing in the wind. Most of us are going to have to wait several more months before we get into Home.
Comment by uberleet — Nov 27, 2007 @ 2:24 pm
In reply to LordOfRun’s post I think Home will become a great meeting place for a lot of forum users/clans to chat and wait for everyone to turn up. I’m a member of the Gamesey.com clan for many games and often sit there staring at the lobby page waiting to be either invited or for the rest of clan to turn up…now if we could meet up in Home I could past the time bowling, watching vids or chatting and generally having more fun whilst waiting…which is a good thing.
It’d also be quite a good way of meeting other clans to compete against, have tournaments, etc. I hope they introduce some sort of clan community to Home so that you can arrange clan v clan games.

Yes, there was a competition for Beta invites. I remember entering for it back when Home was just announced. You’re right, threespeech, things have been very quite since Sony announced Home. Can we have some more beta invites please?

I agree with you mate, Home is a sweet idea granted but I don’t see what its long-term appeal will be. I did my dissertation on this stuff, so I know a lot about this stuff. It was all about how we can replicate the real world to make our lives easier in the virtual domain. The best metaphor for this is your computer desktop. You drag files around it, but the desk has no legs, why? Because their not needed. To cut a long story short my dissertation modelled a building as a database, each room held key information. Users could “walk” around this building to find information in the same way as Home. It didn’t work, it just added more tasks to the user. not finding something in a search engine is one thing imagine walking half a mile and not finding it.
With regards to home, why do we need to walk to a cinema to see a movie clip when we can just browse it from a list. Why do I want to talk to a 3d model of someone when I can talk to them in person. I give Sony credit for the idea but I can’t see this working.
Instead of Home give us a new interface, one that allows us to access information quicker and faster.
Rant over, wheres Wipeout HD?
Comment by Terry — Nov 27, 2007 @ 3:36 pm
Hmmm, not sure I like the sound of seperate servers for the regions. How will that work If I want to invite a friend from the US to play a game. Also, wont this just lead to further regional segregation and the problems where the US and Japan regions get all the good stuff like all the latest movies showing on the cinema, and then Europe end up waiting 6 months just to get gone with the wind.
Comment by Mark Thompson — Nov 27, 2007 @ 3:38 pm
@20
Also, and in no way do I intend offence to Europe but everyone speaks different languages here, surely that will limit the amount of people we can talk to if we can’t speak to our pals in America for example?
And yeah, it will mean segregation…
Comment by Terry — Nov 27, 2007 @ 3:44 pm
On the note of Little Big Planet - i miss the LBP image on the threespeech page…
Comment by JohnSketch — Nov 27, 2007 @ 3:47 pm
I don’t see why different servers per region is a bad thing. All it means is that the load is lightened - it doesn’t mean “segregation” at all.
In case you’d all forgotten, Resistance also has a number of servers, but you can still play with and talk to people in the US.
See, the internet is a wonderful thing, and servers on different continents can actually speak to each other. Wonderfully clever stuff!

I wounder if there’s a virtual PS3 in home?
U cud play GTA 4, while chilaxin in you batchalor pad, while playing Home on ur ps3 in your cold, darkly lit bungalow.
Perplexing!!!!!!!!
Comment by E-ROLE — Nov 27, 2007 @ 4:27 pm
Yawn!
I won’t launch my games from Home, I will simply put the disc in my PS3 instead of wandering around Home aimlessly.
It might be intersting for a couple of hours but I can see that intersest fading rapidly.
Especially when they will undoubtedly try to sell you “furniture” and stuff for a room that doesn’t exist. Baffling.

I hope rockstar makes a better game than they are showing. GTA4 looks terrible. the grafix are still playstation 2 grafix on all of the character mapping. Has Rockstar heard?… were in the next generation of gamming, have they heard of 3d mapping? the game cinematix looked like shit, the characters look poorly made(again). looks like were in for another gta3-grafix-based game. rockstar needs to step into the light and out of their poorly constructed box. Rockstar, MAKE A *NEW* GRAND THEFT AUTO!!! Not Gta3 all over again, that game was hell, and so were the 6, or 7 gta3’s following it. Remember gta 1&2 being the same? well…. looks like history is repeating itself again.

If you google it, there is a possible beta thing on the 29th. Apparently there was a video for a US update of PAIN that showed the HOME logo something downloadable next to the PAIN game. Interesting, although I dont want to raise hopes. As we know where that leads.
All I can say is 2008 cant come soon enough. GTA IV and MGS4 and possible Naruto 2008 (JPN)

whoop-de-doooooo like many others on here i do wonder what the point is? lets look at the other big 3d avatar world shall we IMVU, what do we get there? we have homes, we can visit other people, meet in group rooms/chat/mess about - but after a while it all seems very very pointless, sure i had a f-ing great castle filled with all manor of wonderful things but as was pointed out, unless you know someone in real life you’re hardly likely to want to spend anymore than a couple of minutes with anyone you meet.
and also how are Sony going to stop kids lying about their ages in Home? and pretending to be adults. i have seen it enough on other sites to know what a problem it can become.

now, I know this may sound stupid. But i haven’t looked into much and I can’t find much information on it. what exactly is home? Is it just like a social networking program of sorts? thanks
Comment by Mike — Nov 28, 2007 @ 12:17 am
@ 33
You know, I completely agree with you. I’ve seen the new PS3 Commercials I see all this home business on there, but the fact is where is it? why advertise something thats utterly close from being finished or released for that matter?
Its pretty clear that PSN is indeed a network, but not a real one at that. its not unified, its hardly utilized to deal with general task, like in-game and match making lobby’s like a certain system i know about.
Though i understand the way sony runs things are different from what other console competitors take into account (go figure!). I believe evolving the xmb and all of these tiny softwares sony is doing is entirely a dead strategy. Basicly both the software and firmware should be capable of doing what competitors have been doing for about 2yrs now really. PSN is new, I get that… But theres no reason just because its “new” that it should be limited from the very start.
Some people would agree, if that ‘other’ console decided to make its service entirely free like PSN sales would increase even more. Sony needs to realize the audience isn’t stupid, we know what we want, we’ve payed in hopes to get what we want. We’re waiting… What the hell are they waiting for? for next xbox arrive? can you guess what people will buy based on double the features that the ps3 has when that happens?

@26 - you’ll still have to put the disc in the PS3 when launching from Home, I’m guessing.
I think Home is aimed at the online messaging / social networking crowd - generally younger kids that love spending their days on MSN talking about pointless stuff!

I suppose you’re right, they are all on facebook and all that.
I just feel that Home is going to be a big marketing scam with all sponsors and adverts everywhere to brainwash suggestive people into buying unnecessary things.

Comment by JohnSketch — Nov 28, 2007 @ 11:25 am
On the subject of LBP I see this as something that will work through social interaction as least with this you can create new levels and work together.
It’ll be a far cry from walking 2 miles to the cinema to watch a movie trailer then go to the virtual B&Q to buy some paint for your virtual house. I liked someone else comment baout Home going one step further and having a virtual internet to save us having to walk to the shops. Seems familliar…
Comment by Terry — Nov 28, 2007 @ 12:16 pm
Hey I just had a thought. Forgive me if I get carried away here, but, imagine future games are built with Home in mind, and your appartment car garage is linked to Burnout. Simply walking home, downstairs into your garage and drive into the city. Or if not to that extent, perhaps the world of Home will expand over time, (like this new building), and larger environments will be tacked on. A golf course outside, perhaps sponsored by EA with a cut down version of TigerWoods? With a golf buggy race course between holes? Ha ha ha! Oh dear, I’m already going to far. I’d best stop before I get silly.
Oh no, another idea has to be shared. Personal spaces that made for public consumption. Say a room, that a PS3 owning DJ/producer opens to everyone who’s interested, where his choons play, and video effects and photos are shown. I as a fan of his, might venture into his public space, and leave my avatar there, while a real live party at my house is entertained by his music and videos. Oh I dunno, it’s all a little fluffy…
Anyway, I can see potential, but… it’ll take a lot to make it useful.
