Blaming sloppy journalism, SCEE have strongly denied a rumour claiming that 40 percent of the 40GB PlayStation 3s have disc read errors. As you can see from the statement below from SCEE head David Reeves, the 40GB models have the same industry leading, very low failure rates as the 60GB PS3.
“We are very proud of the quality and reliability of PlayStation 3 and are disappointed that such extremely sloppy journalism has resulted in this totally inaccurate story… Since launching the 40GB PS3, we have experienced a fantastic jump in sales and the failure rates have remained at the very low level that we not only strive for, but have been achieving since the launch of PS3.”
Here’s a link to the story on Kotaku for further background reading on this.

Damn you, you sloppy journos!!

I first read about this rumor on Kotaku, and the whole thing seemed very sketchy from the get-go.
ONE retailer in Belgium: 40% failure rate. Everywhere else in the world: no problem. Yeah, right…

LOL, the article on gamed.nl which started this rumor has been removed from that site.
The lie was too obvious

At least it’s taken the focus away from the “OMG WHERES MY INGAME XMB” debate. Maybe it’s a conspiracy to draw our attention away from that.

I’m loving this nonsense.
THe 360 sits proudly on its 30% failure rate and whilst the PS3 sure, needs some more titles to boost its success, I have more than a few friends who got a 360 for halo 3 and it has since broke.
The PS3 is s avery well built piece of hardware and any articles that try to disrepute this will be shot down without too much effort…

Getting defensive , a SCEE? It might be ture, just have a look at the offical playstation forum for New Zealand and Austrilia, it got a few complaints about defective 40GB PS3 .

I think this is proof that sites like Threespeech (friendly marketing interface to huge corporate) are much more interesting than all these half baked news for news’ sake sites feeding into the worlds iGoogle pages.
I’d like a Threespeech forum though so we can take ingame XMB and ‘no games’ rants into proper threads…

im sick of people bad mouthing the ps3, and the constant whingers posting on this site looking for anything possible to moan about…. so… SHUT UP. the ps3 is a class machine and its always getting better, fact. im happy with the machine considering its barely one year on the go. its doing alright with great things on the horizon, MGS4, GT5, Home… the future looks good

hmmm, I love my PS3 and PSP and spent thousands of dollars from the HD TV, surround system, PS3, PSP, PS store games, and many many PS3 and PSP games. But when Threespeech delete my comment because I wrote that my PS3 BD player stopped reading BD, DVD, and CD last month and I get replacement from Sony after two weeks, that make me wonder who is behind Three Speech? Is this the freedom of journalism?
Bye bye Three Speech, you’ve been deleted from my bookmarks.

@12:
And we’re sick of people like you who follow a corporation with blind loyalty, no matter how badly they’re executing the strategy for the latest generation console of a brand that has grown to become more than what its maker realises.

Kotaku and particularly Brian Ashcraft have a long reputation of talking out of their asses to badmouth the PS3. Legendary are their stories about PS3 consuming 380W or the Korean PS3 launch show with photos when nobody was there because it hasn’t started yet.
It’s pretty obvious that that site has an agenda running from so long ago. I despise them greatly. Good job ThreeSpeech for smashing that false rumor. Keep it up!
