In his keynote speech at the Tokyo Game Show, Kazuo Hirai, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed that Home is now set for a Spring 2008 launch. It seems there’s still fine tuning to be done.
“This is going to be a worldwide service that needs to offer a wide range of functions required in Japan, in the US, in Europe and in Asia,” said Kazuo Hirai at TGS.

Why does this not surprise me. Exactly how long does Sony think they can keep pushing things back without losing their loyal fan base before that loyal fan base no longer exists?
Comment by Squall — Sep 20, 2007 @ 2:29 pm
Simply not good enough. The Delaystation3 is beyond a joke, delays, more delays, no news or information from Sony, poor ports of games.
The store is substandard at best, you are trying to con us into buying aged PS1 games for a second time.
The so called console seller Hevenly Sword was in my opinion a step backward in gaming.
I am not at all happy with this situation or this console
I cannot believe Sony have treated loyal customers in this way. If they need more time to make Home more complete why do they readily subject us to a half baked store sorely lacking in content freely available in other continents.
A very poor show indeed.

Paul, Andy - Do you there might be any chance of SCEE throwing a few more home beta trial accounts our way?
Comment by reakt — Sep 20, 2007 @ 2:49 pm
To be fair though - it’s a free download, free service.
Remember the saying: “you get what you pay for”
The concept of Home is very exciting, and its potential is huge - therefore if it takes a few months longer then I can’t complain.

@3 “You get what you pay for”!?!!
A £425 bookend isn’t what I had in mind.
Comment by Ton Capone — Sep 20, 2007 @ 3:03 pm
John, then why did you buy it?
I’m quite satisfied with what I have so far. Heavenly Sword may not have much replayability, but it was hardly a step back in gaming. If anything I thought the dialog, story and graphics were amazing and the combat system offered something slightly new.
You just seem to be moaning because you want more and more. Even the Wii or 360 cannot provide what you’re asking for - your expectations for this generation are too high in my opinion.
Comment by Flava — Sep 20, 2007 @ 3:06 pm

Hope thats not me “John”, never moaned once about the PSN store!
When i stated “you get what you pay for” - meant it only as “its free - so quit complaining*
I Bought a Wii and 360, so anything but a Fanboy to any side!
My only gripe with the PS3 at the moment is a lack of titles, but that will come with time.
Comment by JohnSketch — Sep 20, 2007 @ 3:13 pm
Agree with Flava. Extremely happy with what we have so far. I don’t even have time to finish all the PS3 games I already have. I’m still more than happy playing new PS2 games as well. Not to mention all the other cool stuff you can do on it too. This is only the beginning people - it’s less than a year old. I can’t believe people want the moon on a stick. If you didn’t know that the best things wouldn’t be available until after the first year then quite frankly you are an absolute moron.
I knew not to expect much, but I bought one cos I had the money in the Summer and bought a HDTV as well and basically wanted a Blu Ray player to show off the quality of the TV. Fantastic games like Motorstorm and Oblivion were just a bonus. If I didn’t buy the PS3 when I did, I’d happily have waited. But I didn’t and I’ve got MORE so far than I paid for and I know that in the future I’m extremely grateful to Sony that I’ll be getting even more - and especially for free as well.
@Ton - no one is trying to con you into buying ANYTHING. You have a choice - you buy something or you don’t. If you don’t want a PS1 game, don’t buy it. Some people do, however, and remember Sony aren’t just catering for your needs, they are trying to satisfy a lot of people at once. Same with the PS3 - if you don’t want one, don’t buy one. Don’t then complain that it doesn’t do something that it doesn’t pretend to do yet.

Delaystation seems extremely apt! the ever increasing list of delays continue….watch this space?? maybe but expect more delays in the process!

I really don’t see how anyone could be delighted with the quality offered by PS3 so far.
Underwhelming European store updates, games coming out weeks after their 360 counterparts or being shunted into 2008, new SKUs and controllers barely a year from the initial release.
I really wish i could afford to say the games are just a bonus but i bought the thing as a games machine and so far it just hasn’t delivered.
Comment by Akkers — Sep 20, 2007 @ 4:46 pm
I think it’s probably a better idea to release it later than rush it out this year without all the features - I read from people involved in the beta that e.g. launching a multiplayer game you cannot do yet from home.

@ jefrey
I thought Sony were telling the truth in their pre-launch hype that is why I bought a PS3 at launch.
Singstar was supposed to be a launch title for goodness sakes. The pre-launch title schedule looked amazing, now we get shafted time and again on pricing, releases, information and store updates.
First and foremost people associate PS with gaming, it is essentially a games machine and so a couple of reasonable games 6 months in is not acceptable, it is a complete farce.

Well, this was pretty much expected.
Oh well, I suppose those of us with a $600 Paperweight can go ahead and play Second Life on the PC until @ Home decides to show up.
Seriously-how do the execs at Sony expect to turn things around with crap 1st party software (Warhawk excluded), delays, and a crap online service(currently…and maybe still in the future, if @ Home doesn’t show up in Spring…)? Seriously? Are the Sony execs even tuned in?
Comment by Matt — Sep 20, 2007 @ 6:31 pm
Geez there are many whiners here. So what if we had to wait a bit to get DiRT on the PS3 for instance. For of all if those extra weeks was that critical for you then there are probably more deep rooted problems in your life situation and priorities. Secondly considering the PS3 version of for instance DiRT turned out better then the others I don’t see how the small delay is to be considered a problem.
Would it be great if everything became available the instant we wanted it? Sure, but that is simply not how the world works. People make time estimates and often they are wrong as challenges pop up.
Complaining about the PS3 being a paperweight etc., is just silly. There are already a good selection of games out and many more are coming the next few months. As the PS3 now has esablished itself, more and more game makers are making sure to have a PS3 version of their games, and in the cases where the PS3 version is delayed you get an improved version of the game as the DiRT example shows. Some early ports where a little rough, but as someone who played Marvel Ultimate alliance for instance it wasn’t so bad it was unplayable.
Also for the person commenting on using Second Life while waiting for Home, nothing I have seen of Home so far gives me the impression it will serve as a full fledged ’second life’ replacement. I find second life boring as hell, but for those who like it I don’t think Home will offer an alternative. Home should probably more been seen as a way for gaming clans etc., to ’socialize’ outside of specific games. As a 3D lounge room and launch system for games combined with a personal ‘brag’ space with gameplay awards etc.

Comment by jimmy bell — Sep 20, 2007 @ 7:18 pm
christain your comments about only having to wait a few weeks for DiRT(which is one title of many)mean nothing if you own all 3 consoles
there is a good selection of games, but why wait for them if they are available weeks before on another console…the only thing at the moment the the PS3 has going for it becuase of delays are exclusive titles…and there aren’t many of them at the moment either, and you say if they do come out at the same time they are unplayable…then SONY has a real problem
and THATS what people are moaning about !!
Comment by metallicorphan — Sep 20, 2007 @ 7:21 pm
May I remind everyone that the PS2 had the same “lack” of games during the first year it was sold. 8 years later and 117.89 million units shipped…
Comment by tito — Sep 20, 2007 @ 10:53 pm
Why do people keep saying, “There’s a good selection of games” ?….guess what, that’s a matter of opinion…what is good to one, might suck to another. I personally don’t really like First Person Shooters, and I feel that most “suck” but that’s a personal preference. I do like Heavenly Sword and I think it’s going to have a ton of replay value for me. The point is, the selection is poor. Why the hell is Team Ninja releasing Ninja Gaiden 2 on the XBox exclusively ? What the hell is up with that ?
You know what’s not a personal preference…..the truth, and the truth of the matter, is that Sony has dropped the ball and had NOT delivered on the “promises” made before the PS3 launch. The supposed “launch” list was a farce…I don’t believe for a second that they didn’t know there would be so many push backs and delays…it’s BS if they try to convince me that it was all a surprise to them. They touted Oblivion as a secret launch title….with how long that sucker was delayed, it’s obvious they knew what was going on…and it’s still sub-par compared to the other two platforms it’s on. We’re not getting a lick of “downloadable content” for that game.
Developers are jumping ship too as they keep slandering it, the “competition” is owning the PS3 on all fronts. The PS3 doesn’t really have anything that sets it apart. Where are all the classic games we were promised for the PSN ? I’ll tell you, they’re on the Virtual Console and on XBLA. No old SEGA games ? No old TurboGrafix games ? Not even a new, old, PSOne game….and the games they do release, are broken and have to be pulled off….it’s sad when the mod scene are doing better than the company that owns it all…..
See, I am a Sony fan, but I’m not blinded by the fact, that so far, we’ve not been given the games we were promised, we are not given the network we were promised, we don’t even have in game XMB access….bull crap to trying to push the responsibility on the devlelopers…”Oh, you can have HDD soundtracks, the devs have to implement it”…it’s your system Sony…force it, make it a standard, don’t try to shuck the blame off on someone else.
Sony was killer for PSOne and the PS2…this time, not so much. I ask how much faith do they have in their own system, when they’re still pushing the PS2…not that I’m saying stop supporting it, but obviously, that’s where they’re focus is right now….which is sad.
You look at almost any forum, a lot people are pissed off, and not just the regular complainers either….they took rumble away, now they’re adding it again. They promise games, then push back the dates. They release a high priced system, then turn around and lower the price after 8 months…..who’s kidding who….I know there’s one born every minute, but I didn’t think I was born that minute…I’m starting to wonder now…maybe I was.

in my opinion the truth is very easy and simple:
PS3 hit the market too soon, at least one year early, trying to mount on “next-gen” train before it was too late.
Sony was not ready to start its “next-gen” program.
Developers were not ready to program on PS3 hardware.
We have be kidding by a stylish but fake Sony propaganda.
Sony’s mind is still on PS2 because profits are still high.
PS3 is a long program for Sony, a platform that has to stand for a while, so they are keeping time for doing things right (and be recycled on follow Sony machines/consoles. I’m talking about music/film/tv/game store, but not only, even connectivity and more stuff)
I’m sure when Sony will put for real attention on PS3, it will be great… but for that time maybe 360 sequel will be ready and who knows what nintendo are really planning.
however here in italy it’s a very beatiful day so I’m taking a walk.

I’m sorry but this is pathetic. As a software developer by trade you know when a project is behind schedule and you damn well know when it’s running 6 months+ late. This isn’t something which has just cropped up, so I wonder why they waited so long before announcing the delay. I noticed it was in TGC, where the press coverage isn’t as great either.
Not impressed Sony, not impressed at all. We’ve all paid a lot of money out on something and so far you’re not delivering. Get your act togeather, and lets see some decent games out there, and release dates that aren’t months and months apart between Europe, the US and Japan (who get everything way earlier for no good reason I can see!)

He now sits in the corner of the lounge playing with his Lego - swaying gently to and fro - refusing to go anywhere near his evil Sony PlayStation.
So do me a favour and chuck us a beta. Daddy needs to come up with the goods - and soon! I tried to consol him with anecdotes of remote play, rumble, how I had to have 2 jobs to pay for my PS3 - but his eyes just glazed over.

I’d agree with most people here as most people who post here are loyal PS owners and have had every version of the console to date. But what most people and myself included don’t get is thier blatent disregard for the consumer in all this, as someone said before Singstar was supposed to be a launch titel FFS!
And games have been in development for ages so I don’t buy that we can’t program for it bollocks! I just feel that back in March I put my money where my mouth was by forking out £425 for the console and just the console and look what’s that’s brought me! Eight months later all the stuff that shut the critics up like home and LBP have slipped to 2008. And my controller is going to be obsolete by xmas! Add to the constant delays to nearly every title on the PS3 and it doesnt leave much, oh maybe except looking through my photo album or watching casino royale. Even Kaz has came out publicly and say the PS3 function is first and foremost a games machine! Then it’s about time Sony put thier money where thier mouth is and deliver for us!
Comment by bmaindj — Sep 21, 2007 @ 4:34 pm
Um, folks that are trying to throw out the first year of PS2 console sales need to remember that while there were only a smattering of good games, there was exactly jack squat available on the N64, PSX, and Saturn at that time.
Furthermore, while they weren’t AAA titles, the PS2 did actually have a healthy selection of decent software in its first year. The only thing that really stopped the PS2 (if anything) that year was the whole disk-eating disk drive defect that was in all of the launch machines (the one where if you set the PS2 on its side, your disk ended up scratched to hell.)
Compare that to now, where you’ve got the Wii with a couple of compelling titles and marketing that is getting the soccer moms in a froth, the PS3 with only three significant titles worth playing on it (Resistance, Motorstorm, Warhawk), and the Xbox 360 with a superior lineup of JRPGs, AAA titles, and superior 3rd party support (excluding only FN Rd. 3), and one thing becomes clear-it’s about the games.
Comment by Matt — Sep 21, 2007 @ 6:28 pm
PSN HOME is a GUI not the functionality of PSN. I do not mind a delay in HOME as long as PSN functionality continues to build…which seem to be happening. If PSN recieves the ability to see your e-mail while still in games that would be a huge leap forward or the simple ability to bring up the PSN XMB (and those functions) in any game.
Sony’s biggest problem is that people still confuse HOME, merely a 3D graphics users interface, with the base functions of PSN. Thye think HOME and teh XMB they are one in the same. The fact is people can bypass HOME all togther if they wish because all HOME is just some fancy 3D effects over what is reallly just the functions of the XMB.
Comment by MonkeyKing — Sep 21, 2007 @ 6:53 pm
The comparison between the PS3 launch and PS2 launch is inherently flawed. Even accounting for inflation, the PS2 did not cost anything even remotely similar to what the PS3 does.
The fact is that one of two things is going to happen. Either the delays, broken promises, and bad PR will sink the system, or it will eventually make a come back as the needs of the market catch up to a system that was released too early and half baked and as the price of said console comes down.
If that first thing happens, PS3 owners have wasted a lot of money, but they won’t be the first console owners to have suffered that fate.
If the second thing happens and the system becomes predominant, early adopters will have paid twice the money late adopters did between the reduced cost of the system and the inclusion of the new controllers in future bundles. Therefore, early adopters have to ask themselves if what they are getting -right now- is worth the money. What you get later the rest of the world can get at less expense without getting jerked around.
The question is, is the product you have -now- worth the money you paid for it.
And the answer is no.

My big concern of late is having joined the US PSN none of the demo that I have played have grabbed me and in most cases have purely bored me.
FIFA 08 is terrible, Tiger Woods 08 is exactly the same as 07, Tony Hawkes is the same old rehashed stuff we’ve seen before, Stuntman looks like an average PS2 game at best and still contains the infuriating aspects of before.
Nothing has changed.

sony said the ps3 would be an evolving machine it gets new system updates every couple of weeks and psn updates even more so every thig on our lovely little earth started of as a giant ball of slime and everything that we have now came from that prehistoric earth
On another point we were stuck with the ps2 for 8 years and all that time and the only update was a shinier thinner modle you can’t rate the playstation until sony say its finished updating it
what we have now is only the beginning of the legacy of playstation3 and if sony had never given a release date before christmas nobody would mind and there would be many happy faces in spring 08

This is disappointing, but not a major setback.
SCEA needs to step up to the plate if they want to hold onto their fans outside of Japan. They need to provide serious developer support for programming for the darn thing in the US and Europe. They also need to send more representatives to game stores. And, of course, they need anticipate how long it will actually take to develop software for such a radical system. I’m quite happy with my PS3, but I’m not your average user. The system needs a little more investment in order to catch the attention it deserves; I’m holding out hope that Sony can pull through.
