Following on from our story Killzone 2’s marketing budget we can give you the TV teaser for what is shaping up to be a serious contender for the big game of 2009, Killzone 2. It’s nice and menacing, with plenty of horror trailer tropes to get you scurrying behind the sofa, only to peek back at the TV while you pre-order your copy…
Having read our recent articles on advertising and gaming (parts 1 and 2), do you think there are other things that might work? Any ideas for some off-the-wall Killzone 2 marketing?
The trailer will be on your TV screens from this week.
Wow that’s what you call short! I hope this is just the build up to a ‘proper’ advert, you’re not going to sell many copies to people (other than those that already know about KZ2) with uninformative ads like that!

This is UK only?
Comment by SappYoda — Feb 16, 2009 @ 7:25 pm
kudos to Sony for actually showing the game. We don’t want ‘off the wall’, members of the general public are going to be non the wiser showing them artyfarty concept adverts. They need to be shown the product and told what it is. The weird stuff is ok for us hardcore monkeys as we’d ‘get it’ but Joe Average needs adverts like M$ have been cramming down our tubes.

*Now* Sony decides to start advertising, *after* xmas has been and gone… and then with this? Have to wonder just how the marketing people at Sony manage to justify their salaries!
Comment by daz — Feb 16, 2009 @ 7:29 pm
Pretty good ad, hopefully Sony will advertise this game in a big way, this IS the biggest game on the PS3 BY FAR and the BEST.
Comment by Kittonwy — Feb 16, 2009 @ 7:51 pm
Seriously people, read the title, it says it’s a teaser. Hold onto your complaints until the game comes out if the full campaign turns out to be a bust.
Comment by CircleOfFire — Feb 16, 2009 @ 7:51 pm
It looks nice but where’s the rest of it? I thought SCEE had £2 million to spend.
Comment by Divine — Feb 16, 2009 @ 8:00 pm
That was lame. Seriously ten seconds is barely anything thing, there was no action what so ever. i’ve got a suggestion. why not show this one
http://www.sena.is/killzone/ in english ofcourse. and perhaps a few trailers right before some movies hitting box office in Feb before KZ2 releases.
I seriously hope the marketing team doesn’t drop the ball on this game because if that trailer you is it. then the penetration you guys want wont go anywhere.
Step it up. this games deserves grand marketing. on a huge level.

Some people are too quick to jump into conclusions.
For a teaser I think it could be very effective.
Bring it on!

When I went to the Star wars prem to see ep 3, there were a load of storm troopers that went around the crowd and roughed everyone up. Thankfully I was one of the people to get roughed up with the pictures to prove it lol.
Maybe a stunt like that would be cool for Killzone 2. Or maybe just give me the budget, team and I’ll sort Sony something out nice for the tv.

For an Ad, I would have an office setting where people are busy at work, and then a wall gets blown in, Helgahst pour in, in slow mo, and the tag line is “be ready”

Not wanting to sound nerdy (but probably failing), odd that Storm Troopers were at the Premier for “Episode 3″, E-ROLE, considering that it was “Clone Troopers” that featured in that movie.
(And after Episode 4 [the original], all the others went downhill for me, but…)
Helghan soliders can be seen in the US PlayStation Home environments this week as they mingle with the masses in order to hand out promotional voucher codes so that all those US punters that haven’t pre-ordered “Killzone 2″, and haven’t created a European PlayStation Network account by now, can get their hands on the Playable Demo.
But yes, as I have mentioned before, the characters from “Killzone 2″ need to put some face-time at red carpet venues, and in European shopping arcades to promote the game in the next two weeks.
I wonder when the TV advertising campaign will start. I would imagine that the first drive will be over the coming weekend, with a major push towards the end of next week & into the first weekend of sales.
Odd there was no visible publicity for “FEAR 2: Project Origin” & “Shellshock 2: Blood Trails”, but I guess that Sony wouldn’t be promoting these given as they are not publishing the titles.
After “SOCOM: Confrontation”, the next PS3 ’shooter’ title may well be “Syphon Filter”. Whatever happened to the PS3 version of “Pursuit Force”?
(And “Black 2″ has been confirmed in this month’s “Official PlayStation Magazine - UK”. Criterion Games [of "Burnout Paradise" fame] will be taking development duties)

This really DOES NEED to be a campaign. Primetime slots which show off the gorgeous visuals and late night slots with extra violence after 9pm.
I’ve recently seen ads for LBP and R2 which seems a bit late imo, both should have had more tv time prior to release. Let’s all just hope that Sony don’t pull any punches with this one since it really showcases some of the PS3’s capabilities. *crosses fingers*

Does it make me a geek that I was one of the lucky few to watch all 6 films in a row before most other people? I don’t even like Starwars that much, too old fashioned.
I’d love to know why a simple advert for Sony that uses their own imagermy costs so much to make.
Comment by E-ROLE — Feb 17, 2009 @ 12:39 am
Seriously??? The F.E.A.R. 2 ad was better, Sony needs to step it up.

They should just use an edited version of the opening movie for the TV ads, it is one of the best game openings I’ve ever seen! Plus a lot of people will recognise Brian Cox’s voice.
Using that voice over while showing select gameplay footage (preferably in slow motion) and bookending it with the incredibly detailed render of Cox’s character is the way to sell this game IMO. The speech he gives sets up the mood of the game and storyline perfectly…

This is f**king stupid
the big sell of the game are the graphics from the in-game first person perspective
that’s all you have to show
this just looks like any other game now
Comment by Randy — Feb 17, 2009 @ 10:42 am
As a teaser it is fine. I have to agree that the one at http://www.sena.is/killzone/ is much better as a full 30 second ad. I also agree with Apnomis in that the opening speeching as a voiced for some action could work quite nicely.
Remember people that the ads also need to appear in time slots where blood and gore just aren’t allowed.

Is Black 2 likely to be a PS3 exclusive? I’m guessing that they will be using the BP engine for this so it could be multi-platform. Well they pretty much have a sandbox experience right there, if they so choose.

Re Black 2 - Apparently not:
Criterion shoot down Black 2 Rumours again -
Wish all you want, but a sequel to the gleefully frenetic shooter Black isn’t terribly likely, Criterion’s Craig Sullivan told D-Pad Magazine.
“We’re not looking at making another Black game anytime soon, although the rumors never seem to go away and we still get a lot of letters from fans, we’re honestly not working on that game at the moment. I doubt the rumours will go away though,” said Sullivan.
Disappointed Black fans will have to console themselves with Criterion’s latest project, Burnout Paradise, or perhaps simply download Black from the Xbox Originals service. You could also argue that they could simply go play one of the many other shooters currently available for the 360, if you were in that kind of mood.
Comment by Robothamster — Feb 17, 2009 @ 4:28 pm
I liked Black a lot and thought it was one of the best looking shooters on PS2, but from what I remember it got panned by the critics. In many ways KillZone 2 reminds me of Black - hyper realistic guns and destructable urban environments, intel collection, linear objective based missions etc.

Speaking of sequels, isnt’ Warhawk 2 due to be announced soon?

We need to all get together on warhawk some time! Would be savage
Comment by E-ROLE — Feb 17, 2009 @ 5:53 pm
You need to understand marketing-speak…
Criterion are not working on “Black 2″.
They are working on “Black: Second Mission”.

Doughnut you just love the “we can neither confirm or deny those rumours” responses
BFN,

PS. I dislike Warhawk… your on-screen character is too big in ratio to the aircraft & other vehicles. It bugs me enough to not play it.

Well fair play at least 3 seconds was for the PS3 logo at the start so at least we know its for this machine after all.
Comment by Terry — Feb 18, 2009 @ 10:41 am
I’ve been thinking about Sony’s advertising and it needs some tweaks…
When you watch an advert for a product on TV, it rarely starts off with the company logo or who made the product. The product is king and you should show as much about the product for 25 seconds. The very last screen for about 5 seconds should be “Only available on the Sony Playstation 3 on 27th of Feb” or similar, with the developer or publisher logo thrown in.
Btw, has anyone actually see this teaser trailer on their TV screens. Are they more likely to be seen at a particular time or just scattered all over the tv schedule place?
Comment by CartBlanche — Feb 18, 2009 @ 2:52 pm
Just watched Criterion Games’ latest Crash TV and they are definitely hinting at Black in the top right hand corner.
Comment by CartBlanche — Feb 18, 2009 @ 4:18 pm
@ CB, very true. Despite how infuriating I find game ads that end with the Xbox logo/sound and a voice over saying ‘Xbox 360 from £129.99′, they do get the message across well.
Having a blink and miss it PS3 swoosh silently on screen at the beginning and just end the ad with KillZone 2 27-02-09 isn’t the clearest message. They should be shouting from the roof tops that this is PS3 only!
They should have a standard splash screen, with voice over, to show at the end of all PS3 ads.
Comment by Apnomis — Feb 18, 2009 @ 6:40 pm
I agree, or some kind of signiture sound… you always know when a Nintendo product is being adviertised.

Comment by CartBlanche — Feb 19, 2009 @ 10:18 pm
@ CartBlanche, that US ad is more impressive when you read this:
“The idea for the commercial centered on telling the story of war on Helghan - up close and very personal and to use the game’s engine to show it. No voodoo, no heavy metal soundtrack: just the true representation of the in-game graphics.”
And if you happen to know any Xbox fanboys that don’t believe the ad uses the in-game engine (given how most of their ads are CG with little ‘representative of game’ disclaimers) you will soon be able to download the interactive version of it from the PSN as part of a project code-named ‘KillZone in 4D’ (another E3 2005 promise fulfilled!!!! lol)
“At the risk of stating the obvious – the Killzone 2 engine is phenomenally powerful. To offer you some insight into the technology behind this game, we will release a playable version of this in-engine ad vignette on the PlayStation Network coming in March. You’ll be able to control the camera and hear director commentary on how the production was completed using only the game’s technology. The project codename is “Killzone in 4-D” – hope you can check it out.”
