PRESS RELEASE:

London, 24th February 2009: The MotorStorm® festival has ripped-up the Monument Valley desert, it’s obliterated everything that stood in its path on The Island, and now it’s set for a whole new challenge. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is delighted to announce that MotorStorm® Arctic Edge is set to arrive in Autumn 2009 for PAL territories and will be available on PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable) and also on PlayStation®2.

Developed by award-winning Bigbig Studios, the team behind the best-selling Pursuit Forceâ„¢ series, MotorStorm Arctic Edge sees the music, the festival and the brutal off-road racing arrive in the breathtaking yet lethal and unpredictable setting of Alaska. With temperatures plummeting, sudden avalanches, broken ice bridges, and three different racing altitudes, this is possibly the most inhospitable environment the MotorStormers have ever had to deal with. With grip at a premium, and in addition to the six existing classes from the original MotorStorm, two new vehicles have been introduced to combat the ice, the cold and the snow - the Snowcat and the Snow Machine. One has the power and size to blast through packed snow, whilst the other has the grip and pace to combat most of what the sub-zero conditions can throw at it.

MotorStorm Arctic Edge is great for single player action, online multiplayer or playing with friends; two to eight players can compete against each other wirelessly via Ad Hoc Mode on PSP. Alternatively, you can also compete via online multiplayer using Infrastructure Mode on PSP to make it to the summit of the online global leaderboards.

A further new introduction to the MotorStorm festival is personalisation of your vehicle class. Each vehicle in the game has a selection of different parts - for example wheels, exhausts, spoilers - liveries and stickers to choose from. Players can also create their own liveries from a set of base patterns and decals. There are so many combinations that each player could own a unique vehicle!

MotorStorm Arctic Edge comes exclusively to PSP and PlayStation 2 hot on the heels of the multi million selling titles MotorStorm and MotorStorm Pacific Rift.

The end of 2009 is going to be as cold and challenging as it gets. So lose your t-shirt and your shorts, keep hold of sunglasses and grab your thermals – it’s time to take a trip to the top of the world to see if you can conquer the most unwelcoming terrain the planet has to offer.

  2. Would never have thought!

My only hope is that the main joy behind motorstorm is that the tracks alter depending on your driving style - mud on the road, dirt trails behind you. - bring that to PSP and you’d be made!

Was the main thing that made me oogle at motorstorm in the first place!

  20. ^ this
Also, yeh, could be good, if wipeout is anything to go by, then the PSP is great at handling racing games. Liked how the trailer referenced the Pacific Rift one at the end there =)

With all these new titles announced, is great to see a nice push for PSP and PS3, looks to be a great year really, I hope they pull it off too, because these are games I want to play with other people!

    Comment by Liquidcalm — Feb 25, 2009 @ 7:36 am

  21. That’s got to be the last big PS2 release, it’s year 10 next year so I suspect it to finally start winding down. Great support for the platform. With the PSP, MS:AE & LBP needs to be priced correctly. Hand-held games do NOT command a 25-30 quid price point. A 15-20 for a retail copy is more realistic.

  22. I hope this bring this puppy to PS3 as DLC.

  24. Presumably, the video is a target render?

Still, this is better news from Sony. Long has the PSP been pretty much ignored with only a trickle of titles coming out - and every other month or so, at best.

I don’t see any harm in having mini-counterparts to some of the bigger titles on the PS3, being developed (and slightly tweaked) for the PSP, or even the PS2 (could someone consider LBP for PS2 please?)

One thing the blogs on here have ignored (although quite understandably, after being hit with a whammy of unprecedented PSP title announcements) is the PS2 version of MotorStorm.

I know what you’re thinking but in my opinion, I don’t see anything wrong with the PS2. I own a PS2 and PSP (not PS3 - sorry, Sony, but you haven’t convinced me yet) and I’m a loyal PlayStation fan and I’m still enjoying my PS2, especially now because so many titles are so cheap.

So, it’s nice to see that a modern developed IP is being retro-fitted onto the PS2 but also being ported to the PSP. Right now, I and I’m sure many PSP owners are not too concerned that these could potentially be viewed as ‘ports’ of their bigger brothers from the PS3. It does not matter, because the PSP is getting a bit of attention and that’s all very important.

I tell you one thing though, Sony needs to be making such announcements AT LEAST once every two months, in order to keep PSP fans loyal, so not to neglect the little machine and disenchant/deter potential new buyers.

Sony, do not screw up these announcements and delay these releases until next year!!!

  27. @18 SH4RKY

Just for future reference so you don’t get confused with CGI and FMV. ;)

FMV is Full Motion Video which is normally based on Real Human Character models being captured on video camera and then rendered into computer imagery backgrounds, such as games like Red Alert where you see the real human actors playing there roles. That is FMV.

CGI which is Computer Generated Imagery, is where everything is done and rendered by computers, with no real life character actors on screen, other than for Capture requirements for animation which is still run and rendered by computers. Uncharted Drakes Fortune as an example. ;)

    Hope that helps a little.

As for this game, it’s definitely all CGI, but after looking at how good the Wipeout games look on PSP, this Motorstorm game, although not up to the graphical high res of the PS3 game, will still probably look bloody good on the PSP.
I just hope it plays well.

Also, I would love to see a Snow version on the PS3, and I think if it sells well on PSP(I know I’ll buy it) then maybe they will bring one to the PS3 as well.
They may even be working on a PS3 version, as I believe it’s not actually the same studio producing the port.

  28. Wow, LittleBigPlanet PSP and MotorStorm PSP! Maybe there’s life in the old dog yet!

Looks very cool though, I also hope that this somehow makes it to PS3 as DLC, racing on ice and snow will look cool in HD!

Maybe the next PS3 version could be something like MotorStorm: World Tour, and it could feature desert tracks like the original, topical tracks like Pacific Rift, and Ice/Snow tracks like these all on the same disc!

    Comment by Apnomis — Feb 26, 2009 @ 12:07 pm

  29. “MotorStorm: World Tour… desert tracks like the original, topical tracks like Pacific Rift, and Ice/Snow tracks like these all on the same disc!”

A bit like “SEGA Rally” then :)

If the PSP lives up to the actually words of the acronym “PlayStation Portable”, I would hope that the same tracks would be available on both the PS3 & the handheld equivalent, and game-play would also be interchangeable. Not in a “Resistance: Retribution” way where you “infect” [!] the handheld device, but with a cut-down version of the larger home-based console (like “Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection” available on the PlayStation Store having been ported from the original PSP version, only with less ancillary features on the secondary platform mainly due to download file size capacity).

Any MotorStorm festivals underway in a PS3 game would then be able to be played on-the-go (or on-erm-anywhere-else if you wish to go through the motions) sharing game data until a connection to the PlayStation Network could be gained to synchronise the statistics & progression through the levels.

This idea has been tried before with older generation consoles & with competition to the PlayStation brand, but rarely gained any momentum outside of Japan, other than with dedicated (and rich) gamers who imported the devices themselves.

Wouldn’t it be a great selling point for the new “PSP2″ if it offered this feature with patches to established titles, but also as initial functionality in new developments?

    BFN,

    fp.

  32. I’m so happy that Sony are giving the PSP a big push.

Resistance Retribution is awesome, and just proves if you put the effort in you get alot out of the PSP.

Same seems to hold true for Motorstorm. absolutely blown away by the Video, just waiting some LBP footage.
