GamePro had a nice chat with Sony exec John Kohler, talking about everything PlayStation. Click the link to find out what was discussed, including: the possibility of downloadable PS2 games, the future of LBP and what’s in store for the PS3 and PSP in 2009.
What do you think? Excited? Of course you are…
Downloadable PS2 games would be great, but if the support is anything like the current unacceptable and lacklustre support for PSone downloadable titles, I won’t get excited for it.
SCEE needs a huge kick up the ass to get their PSone collection up to scratch with their US and Japanese counter parts. SCEE is the new definition of ‘”lazy, can’t be assed”

I moved on from the PSOne and PS2 games, so I could care less if they enhance support for 10 year old games. Sure, more downloadable games in general will be nice, and a handful of gems from each era would be great, but I didn’t buy a PS3 to play old games.
I would rather see better media handling on the PS3/PSP like an actual multimedia app rather then accessing content through the XMB which can’t handle thousands of items properly. Perhaps even create an official Sony Media Server product for the PC (or even a standalone box) to help stream content better to the PS3 and PSP.

I’d love to send my PS2 games to Sony in exchange for downloadable versions of the same games. I just love when games start from the HDD! =)

i’d like for them to fix the Store so i can give them lots of money via my maestro or pre-paid cards. i know Sony are a bit skint at the mo’ so i’d like to help in my own small way
i’m sure you have a mountain of PS2 games already mr Sketch
maybe an app’ so we can copy our ps2/psx CDs to our hardrives would be nice so we can play them without having to get off our arses and find the CD

“…I’d love to download my favorite PS2 games onto my PS3’s hard drive so I don’t have to worry about finding the discs…”
Discs can be so hard to keep from straying around the house can’t they? I mean, I’m always finding mine hanging out in the back alley with the audio cassettes from up the street!
Of course Sony will introduce downloadable PS2 games to the ‘Store once the PS3 firmware has been upgraded to support them. It may be that only a handful (that have already been proven to be 100% fault free through backward compatibility of the Emotion Engine on initial PS3 consoles) are ever supported, but it would keep a few people happy.
But if those people ever moaned about the cost of downloadable content before we can all get ready for a whole new level of criticism, especially when PS2 titles can now be purchased relatively cheaply in comparison to PS3 (or PSP) titles.
Downloadable Distribution is the future (and the new “garlic bread”) though:

I would prefer to see “next gen” versions of, or follow-up titles to, my favourite PS2 titles. “God of War III”, “Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion”, “Killzone 2″, and “Resident Evil 5″ (and maybe also “Timesplitters 4”) are all coming next year, of course, and Team Ico are rumoured to be working on “something new”.
“SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation” should be out in all regions now as well., and earlier this year we saw a conclusion (of sorts) to the “Metal Gear Solid” franchise, a new “Grand Theft Auto” title, and something called “WipEout HD” that lost all pace when it was finally released.
But where is the previously touted “Black II”? I do hope it has none gone the same way as the PS3 version of “The Getaway” (title #3) that was canned (in June 2008).
A version of “Urban Reign” for the PS3 could build on Namco’s previous offerings (”Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection”, and “Soul Calibur IV”), or a new “Sly Cooper” title (although Sucker Punch Productions are probably overly-busy with finishing “InFamous” for the “to be confirmed” 2009 release date).
What other titles would you like to see PS3-based updates to?
PS.
@4 [Zta]:
Ever thought about buying a hard drive for a PS2 machine?

I agree - would be nice just to turn on my ps3 and just pick a game and boot from the HDD., I still wished i’d bought GT5 Prologue as a download rather than the disc. I recently bought ‘Syndicate Wars’ from the PSN, oh maaaaaaaaaan I loved this game especially with 4 player mode back in the day, Lucky i still have my original save with all the mods for each character in the game - sweet PS1 download!., how about Tobal2, parasite eve, thrill kill, naval ops warship gunner 1 and 2, oh and the very 1st F1 game on the ps1 with the dodgy Murray walker soundtrack.

If they achieve anything like that, the ps3 will have a lot more value. I imagine finaly fantasy XII on ps3 would rock
