Exciting stuff just in from Sony…
It’s the first anniversary of SingStar for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe have a special celebration gift for loyal PlayStation®2 (PS2™) SingStars: the ability to play our collection of PS2 discs through SingStar PS3! Arriving right in time for the holiday SingStar party season, a free online update to SingStar PS3 will allow PS2 SingStars to upgrade to PS3 safe in the knowledge that they can take their whole collection of discs with them – while PS3 SingStars can now dust off their PS2 discs and relive the SingStar parties of holidays gone by.
All you’ll need to do is connect to PlayStation®Network when the online update goes live on December 16th – 10:00 AM GMT. Once it’s downloaded (automatically), you’re good to go. Start your SingStar PS3 session as normal by loading any SingStar PS3 disc – then, you’ll be able to swap it for any PS2 disc for the rest of the session.

Nice - but no cigar yet, guys.
I’ve got *one* PS2 Singstar disc and 74 PS2 games (and no longer room for a PS2 hooked up). Running out of worthwhile PS3 games, so would be a good time to play those big ol’ PS2 RPGs if you catch my drift…
Comment by Tom — Dec 15, 2008 @ 5:38 pm
So by the same token, can Sony now bring back BC for the PS3, so we can enjoy all of our PS2 discs, beyond Sing-frikkin’-Star?!
Didn’t think so…This, and other Sony marketing blunders for this third generation, have put me off from buying the PS3.
And I’ve been a loyal fan who’s not even considered another console in the past, aside from the PlayStation brand.
Over & Out.

Sony ARE making all PS3’s Backward Compatable via firmware update by February 09, They are in the very final processes of finalising BC bug fixing and will be making PS2 games available on the PSN too. so mr Zed Zee - just shut up and keep the faith.

@ linton - knowing SONY though they’ll bring out the BC in firmware and strangely all those launch 60Gb PS3s will stop playing PS2 games properly..
they can’t seem to be able to do anything right with this generation of consoles.
that makes my kittens very sad.

Now I might buy singstar. One quick question: Will a PAL version of a PS2 singstar game play in my US PS3 with a US copy of Singstar on the PS3 when this update hits? I really want to play the Sing Along with Disney Singstar game.
Comment by JimJimBinks — Dec 16, 2008 @ 12:44 am
Cool I just got Vol 2 Bundle with mic today but the song list kinda sucks, and what’s with the limit Singstore why aren’t songs from other Disc on the store to buy? I don’t wanna have to buy a previous volume for a few songs. Next thing should be to add the ability to copy a SONG from one disc to the PS3 HDD so the disc swapping it eliminated,.
on that note can anyone tell me what Disc “I don’t Feel Like Dancin’” is from?(the one of Wookie dance fame) I’ll buy a whole disc if that’s the only way to get that song, I didn’t see it on the Singstore
Comment by Tparsons5150 — Dec 16, 2008 @ 1:32 am
Ummm, guys, it isn’t like this patch is going to run the Singstar software on the PS2 disc. It’s just going to allow Singstar PS3 to read the Singstar PS2 files.
Comment by Daniel — Dec 16, 2008 @ 1:43 am

Comment by Monkey Rimmer — Dec 16, 2008 @ 9:25 am
Well, this is certainly a nice feat for every Singstar-fan out there - even if it has nothing to do with “real” bc!
But as an owner of a first generation 60 gb EU-PS3 I (meanwhile) can at least play about 95% of my PS2-collection - even if it’s not all perfectly emulated.
Which reminds me:
@ Sony: Most of the -potential- PS3-owners would REALLY, REALLY appreciate a re-implementing of the PS2-software-emulation-feat in the newer models! ^_^!

Singstar ABBA doesn’t get updated! I had to stick in the normal Singstar to get the update notice. Update 2.22 was installed. What sucks is that the region protection of the disks is still in place which means that I can’t use my PAL PS2 Singstar disks on my US PS3.

I have a launch PS3 and have used the B/C a grand total of twice since launch - I’m too busy playing PS3 games and PSN downloads to worry about PS2 games! I think the feature is seriously overrated, it’s like some kind of security blanket PS2 owners need before upgrading, but in reality it’s hardly used by 90%+ of upgraders!
@ Tom - are you serious? You are running out of worthwhile PS3 games in one of the busiest gaming periods in the PS3’s short history? Seriously I have not got enough spare time to play all the games I want to play this Christmas, I’ll probably have to pick a few of them up next summer when I have more time!!!
@ ZedZee - this is slightly different as this is a very specific developer created implementation of B/C for one game, one exceedingly popular game at that. They probably use essentially the same files in the PS2 version that they use in the PS3 version, so this is probably no more than a patch to tell the PS3 game where/how to read the song data from the PS2 discs.
@ linton - do you have a link to your source, I would be quite amazed if Sony have worked out how to do this at a firmware only level, and if it was coming as soon as Feb-09 I’m pretty sure they would have been shouting it from the roof-tops during the crucial Christmas sales period! Firmware for PS2 downloaded games possibly, but not PS2-disc games.
I still think there will either be a disc-based solution (insert disc, run program, swap disc for PS2 game, play PS2 game) or hardware USB add-on in the future for PS2 B/C though. There are too many people that say “I’m not getting a PS3 until I can play my PS2 games on it” for it not to be worth their while to bring out and being an optional addon they cover their additional costs without increasing the console’s price - unless of course it is impossible.
One things for sure, whether most people use it or not, both the Xbox 720 and PS4 will come with full B/C with at least the previous console generation. There has been far too much fuss made over it for them to afford not to!
Comment by Apnomis — Dec 16, 2008 @ 11:19 am
I’m not sure what this really means as I am not a owner of any of the Singstar Software but, if I was it would be sweet if we could insert all our Singstar discs and have the PS3 download all the Singstar Songs off of it so they could play without the discs being in there. So once all my Singstars are downloaded all I have to do is put in my PS3 version on Singstar and it will have access to all my singstar songs in one place. Although it sounds like it means that they just added backwards compatiblilty thru a patch for all the singstar games and that you have to have the PS2 disc in the system while you play.
I don’t really care either way because I have an original NTSC 60GB PS3 system so I have the Hardware Backwards Compatibilty, but all in all it is a Extremely nice thing for Sony to do as that shows they still care about their fanbase and with these kinds of actions I don’t doubt they will add Software Backwards Compatibility thru a software patch at a later date.
The big question is now are they adding the software Backwards Compatiblilty so you can buy PS2 games on the PS Store? or is it so you can play your currently bought PS2 discs in the now Non-Backwards Compatible PS3’s? I hope it’s the latter because I know it will probably piss off a lot of Loyal Sony PS2/PS3 owners if it is just so you can try and sell them a game they already have but can’t play on their PS3 because you took it out of the console.
Either way will have to just wait and see.
Comment by Wolf26pack — Dec 16, 2008 @ 11:34 am
Yep, just downloaded update 2.30 and BINGO !!

…Further to feedback about some issues with the disc swapping feature in SingStar on PS3, the SingStar Team will soon release release version 2.40 of the game. The fixes included in this update are:
* You can now quit the game when using a PS2 disc.
* You can now quit the game when using the SingStar ABBA disc, when an ABBA wallpaper is selected, and a disc swap is done.
* The PS2 disc swap now works with PS2 SingStar 80s Sweden and Benelux
