Three Speech regular E-ROLE has been playing Crash Commando, which seems to be what most people were loving about last week’s update…
I don’t know if I’ve been living in a cave recently, but the first time I’d ever heard or seen of Crash Commando was literally last week. It’s strange because I like to think I keep up to date on games, so this took me by surprise.
From the trailer, I saw that Crash Commando was a fast, frantic action packed game. It’s a game that I downloaded on the day and sunk right into. My first impression of the Crash commando was that it’s something you could pick up and play for 10mins or have a nice hour long session battling online or against friends. The game play is silky smooth and the graphics are bright and well suited with excellent sound effects. It’s an odd combination of side scrolling and multiplayer gameplay that makes it very appealing and gets you addicted straightaway.
The weapon list is decent with plenty of variety and opportunities to use special power up weapons on the map. You also have a handy jet pack to hand, enabling you to reach distant ledges and power ups (you can only use it for a short time though). Vehicles are a great addition to the game as this makes you feel like the most powerful thing on the map - but also the most targeted.
The great thing about Crash Commando is the fact there is no script; all you need to know is that there are two commando factions (the Grunts and the Jarheads) and they hate each other very much. Because of this lack of story, you feel more able to just get stuck in and enjoy the experience. The only small problem I had was that it’s best to play on an HDTV, as the game really benefits with high definition visuals.
If this is a sign of things to come on the PSN, then bring it on. You won’t find a more satisfying and engrossing game than Crash Commando.
Totally agree. Crash Commando is right up there with Super Stardust HD as one of the best titles available on PSN. More like this, please!

Care to elaborate on how “demos kill games”?
I bought the awesome Pixeljunk Monsters only after I played the Us demo, otherwise I wouldn’t have took a punt… Same with Echochrome
I have only bought a few games “blind” from Psn : Flow, Everyday Shooter, Locoroco Cher… whatever the name is, Wipeout & Linger in Shadows…(granted a demo for Linger would be hard to implement)
I have thought about getting PAIN! but without a hands on feel for the gameplay, no sale… Same for Crash Commando, Ragdoll Kung Fu, Savage Moon & Fat Princess. (when they are out)
Only Psn game that I can see me buying in the future without a demo is Flower…
The only way I can ever see a demo killing a game is if the game is a stinker *cough*Haze*cough* and I still ended up renting that, can’t really do that with digitally distributed games can I?

Demos kill games… plain and simple. I agree that sometimes demos give you a better indication of what a game feels like, but I think that giving a person a chunk of a game before being on sales is bad.
that’s why resistance 2 and LBP bombed so badly in sales. Beta keys being given everywhere, people having hands on with the game and deciding they don’t want to play it after being bored with a BETA which features only a map, or 2 weapons or whatever… Demos work the same way. You might play the same match of fifa 09 for a full week, then decide you’re bored with it and not buy the game come release date.
Moreover, games like Motorstorm Pacific Rift and Resistance 1: Fall of Man actually had crap demos, which actually made me NOT want to buy the full game. However, I got them in the end and I’m quite pleased with my purchases.
I’m not saying I hate demos, but taking LBP and Resistance 2 in consideration, you have to agree that the Betas hurt the sales of these games massively, these games would have sold at least 1 million on hype alone.
Comment by darkos87 — Dec 24, 2008 @ 2:17 am
@darkos87
Think we have to agree to disagree, some games that never were on my radar were bought on demos alone… Think demos attract sales far more than hinder, after all that is the purpose of their existence?
Think the two month PAL delay and lackluster (imo) Singleplayer hurt R2 far more than a limited multi-player beta access…
As for Lbp, could write a small essay on why sales were lapsed. (they have been picking up) But to some-up, niche and high concept new franchises don’t really justify a £300 entry fee to people that are not in the “know” (For the record I love Lbp again, now most of the issues have been patched)
Also behind the games industry curtain, which I have had a peek behind, when doing my degree…. When pitching a game to a publisher a cross-section demo or pre-vis can sell your game far more than a treatment and concept art alone. So in that sense demos have actually helped games “live” far more than no demo at all…

Also just like to add, seem to remember our longtime resident Fanpages not generally “getting” Lbp, but after a bez on the beta he soon did a 180…
The door can swing both ways…
