This statement just in from SCEE:
Sony Computer Entertainment and Media Molecule would like to thank everyone in the LittleBigPlanet online community for an amazing start! So far a staggering 84,000 individual levels have been uploaded and more than 27 million level play throughs have been completed. We couldn’t be happier with the initial efforts from our community members; the variety and quality of some of the creations has been astounding. We’ve seen everything from great platform adventures, puzzles and quizzes through to stories and races. We have even had a wedding proposal created entirely in the game!
Sony Computer Entertainment and Media Molecule would also like to take this opportunity to praise the fantastic spirit that our online community has displayed. The vast majority of content uploaded to date has been fun and suitable for all of our community members. In a very few cases we have upheld complaints regarding unsuitable content or infringement of intellectual property, with less than 0.5% of levels actively moderated as a result of complaints from other users.
Sony Computer Entertainment are committed to continually improving our moderation procedure and the methods of communication we use, in particular regarding the reasons that user complaints are upheld. In the meantime, here are some suggestions for all of our creators:
Ensure that the content you share with other users is suitable for all ages - everybody has access to your level if you publish it.
Please respect other people’s intellectual property rights. For example, don’t use images, brands or logos that you’re not entitled to use.
If you come across any content that you feel the need to report, then please do it responsibly. Hoax reports will be considered inappropriate behaviour.
Thanks to everyone that has contributed to LittleBigPlanet so far. Keep enjoying yourselves!

0.5% of 84,000 is 420
There are more than 420 complaints on one website alone, so something isn’t right somewhere, however the statement does bring clarity to the situation and hopefully moving forward these early problems aren’t repeated, and they can get on with fixing lag issues.
I was playing with a mate last night, off-peak time and both of us have 20mb broadband, and it was unplayable.
The press release doesn’t explain my comments yesterday
“What about all other games which feature user creation/mods… nearly all user content are tributes to other games etc…
Just look at all the Halo levels on FarCry2 etc… Why are LBP customers being treated with an iron fist, whereas users of FC2 and other games getting away with it, when the same Playstation Network EULA applies”

Well i think that SCEE comments regarding Copyright material sounds fair enough, but they do need to change moderation methods so that a level can just be altered an resubmitted.
Re: Lag, I played a 4 player game online last night, no sure of the hosts speed but mine is only 4mb on a 8mb max speed line and I have to say it ran perfectly well. Never had any problems in the Beta either and I also have my PS3 connected via Wireless so I don’t really know how you were having problems Chris. Maybe you or your mate need to sort out your ports?
Threespeech definitely seems to be the place for all the complainers to meet and pass on negativity…..

That is my exact point too like the Master Chief in UT3 and other such ‘tributes’. When that happened a Microsoft lawyer actually came out with the following statement:
“When it makes it to Business Week , I think it’s time to comment. Many people are talking about the Master Chief mod for Unreal Tournament 3, that allows you to play in the character of the Master Chief on the PS3. Many people are surprised Microsoft is “allowing” this.
Actually it’s nothing more than the Game Content Usage Rules in action. When these were developed, people all thought they were focused on machinima. The truth is that while they do address machinima they also allow for a lot of other things. Mods like this are one of them. The developers aren’t selling the mod, they’re not monetizing Microsoft’s IP, they’re just creating something to share their love of the Master Chief on a new platform. It’s a great thing for us and a great thing for the gaming community. And much though I love my friends at Epic, Unreal Tournament isn’t Halo. This will also remind people of just how great the Halo games are and remind them that if they’re done with the user-created Halo experience, the real Halo is available only on the Xbox 360 .”
Just when everone thought that Microsoft were going to send in the lawyers…. its the same issue for GHTunes!

When you select the levels you have a planet where you can see about 20 of them at a time.. it would take 4200 ‘pages’ of levels to be able to see them all. I doubt most people go beyond the first half dozen pages… so aren’t the majority of these levels basically wasted?
Or there’s the select by keyword which always seems to bring up the same group of levels no matter what you select (think that’s broken TBH because the levels it brings up most of the time don’t have the keyword that you selected).
If there are going to be that many levels it needs an a-z view, preferably with some way of marking levels already visited.
Comment by Tony — Nov 13, 2008 @ 11:39 am
All well and good but the clips they showed previous to release showed tribute type content and even a song not on the final LBP release.
How do they explain luring people in with a false idea of what they will be able to do?
And where is the explanation of the ludicrous pricing on the store for all but especially LBP dowloadable content.
Are they going to patch the unresponsive controls and jumps? Are they going to patch the random way that you go from backround to foreground? Are they going to fix the lag?
Once again Sony you gloss over so many issues people have.
Comment by Ton Capone — Nov 13, 2008 @ 12:02 pm
@Tony
I agree, we need something to show that it is previously played/visited..
also we need an easy way to see the most hearted levels, by everyone or by your friends…. and maybe a % rating, based on the number of hearted vs the number of plays…. (and a way to view the top ones again of course)

What tribute content? If you’re talking about Sony owned IPs (Killzone, etc) then surely you see the difference in someone making a level themed around Killzone, versus one themed around Sonic/Mario. They’re just protecting themselves from being sued - as per the terms and conditions. I think this response brings clarity and I totally understand where they’re coming from. Also you have to remember that deleted levels have been reported as being offensive / in breach of copyright by other users - it’s not like they’re just randomly deleting stuff.
I do agree that the jumping needs to be fixed, but the moving from foreground to background is an integral part of the gameplay mechanic. This is supposed to be a fairly mainstream game, so making it complicated by making players have to change planes themselves every 2 seconds just wouldn’t be feasible.
I seriously can’t believe the amount of negativity on this site… This is a fantastic game, which is abiding by the rules that players agree to before they start playing. What did you expect??
Comment by Sackgirl — Nov 13, 2008 @ 1:39 pm
@Sackgirl
What ton capone was talking about was the pricing of the costumes, £3.99 for a “rare” Week 1 t shirts is a mega rip by anyone’s standards (its only rare cause no one will buy it at that price).
And I don’t think that people on this site are that negative, maybe its cause they don’t sugar coat problems with a game. , and talk about how awesome everything is when it isn’t. Just my humble opinion.
I personally think that making the movement between layers manual instead of automatic would be a better way than the hap hazard way its done at the mo, or an option to choose would also be a good idea. I don’t think pressing up or down on a d-pad/analogue stick is rocket science and 99.9% of people would be able to work it out.
Comment by manley — Nov 13, 2008 @ 2:29 pm
oh,, and there definitly needs to be a more suitable way of searching the user created level, a leader bored based on % of hearted to plays would sort the problem out.

What did you expect would happen with this game when it came out? This is supposed to be the game that sells Ps3’s huh? I was more excited about this game more than anyone among my friends. I even convince them to get LBP because its such a great game and you can do anything, and now you pull this BS. Good job guys this is why your in last place among the 3 consoles.

@ sackgirl - it’s a good game but only lets you do half it promised. offline is fun, online is badly broken most of the time, and the overzealous nature of level removal leaves a bad taste in the mouth. i’d like to think we’re openly honest here rather than negative. for a semi-official site i’m surprised at what Sony and their trained monkeys let us get away with regards some of our views.

PS. If you downloaded the PAIN “Movie Studio Pack” &/or the “David Hasselhoff Pack” & you go into the game & find it ‘broke’… you need to come out again & revisit the icon to prompt a download of Version 2.04 Update (211Mb) before it will work.

Sony, have you ever heard of Fair Use? I seriously doubt Nintendo is going to sue you because an LBP player created a level that’s a recreation of the first Super Mario Bros. level.
This is a horrible stance to take, and it’s only more hypocritical considering how you had a contest asking people to create an LBP level based on Shadow of the Colossus (we can assume the people entering this contest didn’t have the full permission of the creators of that game to make a level based on that particular IP).
It’s hypocritical, it flies in the face of Fair Use, and it’s a completely horrible decision that’s going to come back and haunt you in the end.

as for the animal pack, yeah right, maybe if Sony actually get around to fixing the Store so i can begin using my Maestro card again, but as it is i can’t buy anything until probably the next firmware update by the looks of things.
maybe i’ll start playing LBP again (i do have my pre-recall copy still) in a few months if they sort out the majority if issues i have with it. for a title that was supposed to be a system seller the whole thing is backfiring badly and judging, as you noted, by the amount of other people selling off their copies i’m not the only one who feels let down.

720p is NOT better than 1080i…Its Personal preference or in some peoples case a necessity…
As a lot of early HDtvs in the states only output 1080i, so when you play a 720p only PS3 game it outputs to 480p!… because sony dont support that res… Something that is a none issue with the 360 thanks to its built-in internal scaler…(360 is even getting patched to support res’s above 1080p for PC monitor support next week with the “NXE”)
Also 720p tends to looks crap on tvs larger than 40″ (not so much now as the internal scalers built into brand new sets are a lot better) as is the case on my 50″ bravia… 1080i looks amazing, 720p loads of jaggies (and yes I have a correct configuration of settings) so (nearly) all-multiformat games I get for 360…
There way to patch games to output 1080i on Ps3 as it was added to Burnout Paradise…
Also there is a thread on the Us Ps forum that has over 400+ pages of posts (last time I read it ages ago) and been open for more than a year due to sonys 480p output on 1080i sets…

I was adding a comment to a thread at HotUKDeals.com this afternoon in response to a topic about how the free 6-inch ‘Sackboy’ dolls provided with some of the retail versions of “LittleBigPlanet” had ended up on eBay & were being sold in excess of the original cost of the game.
I have transposed my text below just in case Sony don’t hang on my every word…
—
Sony could do with producing some official versions of these (rather than the promotional ones supplied as ‘give-aways’ with the game, or incentives to take out subscriptions to “Official PlayStation Magazine – UK”) & having them on counters in filling stations or by the tills in supermarkets priced for a few quid.
Punters would go (typically) “awwww, he’s so cute…” buy one & hang him (not literally) in their car. Instant promotion for the game. Instant gratification for kids on long journeys. Instant smile for the driver when he or she gets back in the car after a hard day working.
In fact, to differentiate the ones for sale from those previously supplied & stuck on eBay at silly money, the commercial ones could have limited Santa hats for the festive season. Then Easter Bunny ears. Then a sun hat & shades. Then would come the football team branded kit-wearing Sackboys. The Olympic Team GB Sackboys, and the we’re-having-a-post-recession-party-hat-wearing Sackboys. The list is indeed as varied as the many user-created levels available in “LittleBigPlanet” so far.
Then there’s the option of slightly larger ones with buttons in their bellies that play the LittleBigPlanet theme tune for smaller kids (i.e. not adults). Branded lunch boxes for any sized people. McDonald’s/Burger King Kids Meal toys… Keyrings… Pencil cases… Erasers (with or without pencils)… Notepads… etc. etc.
And, of course, Dress-up Sackboy fridge magnets and floating Sackboy for your bathtime fun kits. (Keep it clean, sackpeople).
There’s even the possibility of Stephen Fry reading specially written “The Adventures of Sackboy…” audio books for the younger audience (so that the larger “LittleBigPlanet” fans can leave a CD on & go back to the PS3 when the kids have finally put the controllers down & gone to bed).
Come on Sony. The kids will be breaking up for their Christmas holidays from school soon… get all this stuff out before they go back for the next term (and before the [next] “Next Big Thing” is out)
Finally (or, indeed, initially) “Children In Need” Sackboys & Sackgirls … with profits going to the charity funds.
(“fanpages” is available for employment in the Sony organisation at any time, btw. They just have to ask)

Anybody got any more marketing ideas?

hmm.. t3rr0rt!me, I’d say the thousands of people enjoying the game are too busy playing it to be bothered to complain about it on a blog
There’s a few things that could really use some fixing in LBP, but there is so much stuff that is just so good, and despite what you might think of how levels get pulled or the online search function being hopeless, I don’t think you’re going to find many games that truely feel like the developers put their hearts into the title.
Just playing that little intro level where the developers pictures come up.. it might look cheesy in a way, but at the same time just that sequence alone should make you sit back and go “wow, this game has had some real love put into it”. I imagine many of the annoying problems will be sorted out soon too.

The ‘Azure Palace’ was seemingly removed for moderation but apparently it has now been returned without any changes.
I guess the system Sony & MM are working to at the moment goes something like this:
1. A certain number of ‘Grief Reports’ are submitted for a level. Doubt it’s just one.
2. Sony/MM remove the level and when they get the chance (they must have tons to go through) play through it to check for offending elements.
3. If it’s deemed ok they can return it to the server, if not it gets the chop.
Seems fair enough to me if that’s how it’s working, but they do need to contact the author somehow with an explanation really.
