Tony Buckley and the WipEout team at Studio Liverpool have deliberated long and hard over the various screenshots, and have decided on the winners. Over to Tony…
“There were some excellent screen shots to choose from and it has been a very, very difficult job narrowing it down to just five, but we have chosen five and here they are…
The first one in the list is the overall winner…
Great feeling of motion, the explosion in an abstract manner that mirrors the explosion with the lines of the track resulting in dynamic symmetry.
Shows good isolation of abstract shapes and composition, interesting use of the photo tool, striking colours.
Excellent composition, nice character shot of the ship and missile effect, great sense of speed with the motion blur effect, stunning background.
A dynamic environment shot emphasising the snaking shape of the track, good inclusion of mag effect and ship trail, the 3 elements of the shot work well, ship, environment and background tied together with nice colour scheme.
A simple beautifully framed shot, that draws the eyes into the elegant lines of the Piranha.”

Mine isn’t up there, but that’s probably because I sent 4 photo’s!!! Problem is I really couldn’t decide which one to use over the other as they all have their own plus points!!!!
Which would you submit out of these:
Close up of a ship (Auricom) on it’s side (mid-spin) jumping off the big bridge in the Chengou Project with the bridge in the background.
A shot similar to the pic 1 above but from a lower angle so you can see underneath it with an explosion behind it (not like the explosion in pic 6, this one is more random and smokey) there is also another ship in the background just coming past the explosion
A shot of the missiles ricocheting of the side wall producing sparks with the light trail showing it having just miss one ship and the “orbs” about to it the ship in front of it
A shot of the underside of a ship (flying over the camera) with the focus on 3 tailing rockets that have a smoke trail coming from the cave in the background moments before they impact (the rockets are actual rockets btw, not just “blobs of iight”).
I’m so indecisive about things like this!!!
Is it against the rules to make a collage, so it’s one image but with different photo’s included in it?

This Game is Looking Really Amazing, Good Work Studios Liverpool !
I’m now anticipating for your DLCs, I’ll expect that you’ll have special things to give us, your all-time fans…but knowing what you did with the DLCs in WipEout Pure (PSP), well…we’ll be much pleased to buy really creative contents for the better of longenvity that this game deserves through time…is always a good option on making more money with simple but creative contents and at a cheap price ! And there’s always the option that the consumer makes, if he/she wants this or that, or just nothing…it’s always better for everyone !

I can’t believe how much time I spent on getting the angles just right, adjusting the effects etc. Still ended up with 5 to choose from.

Its ace being able to see your own shot stuck up on the net with all the others. A lot of really cool effects people have managed to get out of the engine.
As for the picture size, Im slightly disappointed that Wipeout doesnt upscale your photos when using a SD TV. Theres a few of us who have entered, but the PS3 outputs at your resolution of your TV and not 1080p…

at least comparing the CURRENT Wipeout HD and recently released F-zero that I only demoed, Wipeout wipes the floor with F-zero, at least currently. While interesting the article is comparing a very old racer to a current. I could, using that methodology still say people should go get Gran Turismo 2 instead of wasting time on something Like Forza 2 or PGR4. Kind of a retarded argument in either case.

What’s the criteria for judging though. If we knew that we’d be in with a better chance. For example, if the winner is the one that’s the most artistic then GTAce gets my vote. If it’s the one that’s most out-there then irononreverse wins it. If Studio Liverpool are looking for one that shows off their game then I really like the Apnomis as it really illustrates the multiplayer element. There really are some superb pics here and I will have to work very hard before submitting my own entry!

You can do black & white with the saturation, but that pic isnt even shot with colors “off”, its in the zone “Zen”, the whole track is white except the boost pad.

Wow some of these are getting really good!!! There’s some really nice ones in today’s update! Can’t help but think late entries have an advantage being able to see the competition though!
Worryingly for me some of photo’s submitted so far are very similar to screens I have taken that I rejected in favour of the rocket shot. I’ll be gutted if one of those win because I picked the wrong shot to enter!!!

When you announce the winners I think it would be handy if there was a brief explanation on why it was picked. I’m not bothered if I don’t win, can’t say I’ve submitted the best shot. But its been a fun competition and we’ve seen some really cool stuff as a result.
Some people though appear to have spent a bit of time on it and from a few comments here and there above there could be some toy missiles sourced from the respective prams.
Of course the explanations may cause the exact same problem!

Just wondered, was it that people were meant to use the Photo Mode only as its obvious a lot of these are Photoshop jobs. The giveaway being that those featuring explosions or Zone are not possible in photo mode… just thought this might be a bit unfair on some people.

Just out of interest how far are people through Wipeout. I’ve done Headrush, think im on Speed Freaks which is 6/8? Getting pretty damn hard, especially them time trials. And whoever thought of that last section of Sebenco Climb (the really twisty bit before the last corner) - damn you!

Also… on Uber Mall, theres a bit that I can never get right, its at the end where there is a sharpish right followed by a near hairpin left before the starting grid section. Whats the trick for getting round that?

Im in Headrush right now.
You need to take the first corner from the 2 from far left, so you have a nice fluid line, take the 2nd corner with a lot of airbraking and if you need to, go away from the throttle for a short time (like in the first corner from Chengou Project). I also have problems there, love Uber Mall though.

@ Skiller, that’s a super shot! That was probably a contender for the top 5 - you’re right to feel gutted!
They look so much better at full res though, I hope TS publish the 5 winners shots at full res…
@ Aragorn1001, I think I should have waited longer too, but having said that there was no guarantee it would get published - I had to send mine twice as the first e-mail got lost, so if I had of waited I’d have been in the same boat as Skiller…

on second thoughts I’d put the pic by Golden Fenice higher, everytime I tried to get a decent pic of the shield it just never happened but GF nailed it.

I do like the one by Saz too though, there’s 89-90 entries so it’s a toughie.

I choose those 5, because they all have something unusual about them, but they also look really good…lets face it, anyone can take a picture of a ship flying along a track (like mine for example)!! I think the winner will be a pic that has an unusual perspective or background. A picture which either took alot of skill to capture, or was just pure blind luck…

Pah I didn’t win!
I knew I shouldn’t have gone with the shot I did - I had a missile action/speed shot too, I should have used that!!! He liked missile shots more than rocket shots! lol
I also tried some shots of the exploding Zone Ships but decided they looked pretty lame and didn’t represent the game very well - goes to show what I know!!!
Never the less, congrats to the winners - the overall winner is an excellent shot. Nice composition, nice explosion, brilliant back lit effect on the ship, and a interesting use of the rotate function. All in all a worthy winner!

P.S. I still think GTAce’s is by far the best Zone mode shot, it’s like a professional photo - the colour, the angle, the focus, the composition. I’m really surprised it’s not in the top 5…

Alex Sejaent’s pic looks a lot like mine, and is on the same part of the same track by the looks.
Oh well, well done chap, I am most envious, still it’ll soon be the 24th and I’ll be struggling as to whether to play LBP or Dead Space.
