No doubt you’re already aware of (and excited about) the latest firmware updates for PS3 and PSP. We’ve just had some information on both updates in from SCEE, so please click through to find out more and let us know what you think about all the new functionality.
London, October 14, 2008 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced details of the next PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) and PSP®(PlayStation®Portable) system software updates, adding new features to both platforms to benefit consumers. The PS3 firmware update (v. 2.50) will include the implementation of advanced voice chat features for the PS3 official wireless headset, the ability to capture screenshots in-game with supporting titles in the future, and Trophy enhancements, among other new features. The PSP firmware update (v. 5.00) will add direct access to PlayStation®Store on PSP, enabling consumers to browse the store and download games whenever they’re at a Wi-Fi hotspot. Both system software updates will be released on 15th October.
PLAYSTATION®3 Firmware 2.50 Update
Building upon the foundation set by previous firmware upgrades, the 2.50 system software update will refine existing features while also adding new functionality. The update will deliver exclusive options to support the official wireless headset, as previously announced, such as an on-screen indicator that shows volume, battery charge, and mute functions, as well as a High Quality (HQ) mode, which utilises advanced wireless technologies and the Headset’s dual-microphone design to enable clear and wide-band wireless voice communication with PS3 system. HQ mode greatly improves the voice chat experience in multi-player titles such as Resistance 2, which launches in November.
To further strengthen the gameplay experience on PS3, the firmware update will add an in-game screenshot capture tool, laying the groundwork for developers to add capture and sharing options to their games and allowing players to immortalise their favourite gaming moments and share them with friends. Titles that support the feature will be announced in the future.
The 2.50 update will also enhance the user interface for PS3 Trophies. When players acquire a Trophy, the in-game notification will now include the specific Trophy icon created by the developer, while more intuitive options for comparing Trophies with friends have been added, including an icon to represent each Trophy level. The Trophy system will continue to expand through future firmware updates, catering to the PS3 community and the competitive nature of the more than 12 million registered PlayStation Network users worldwide.
Other new features delivered through PS3 2.50 will include:
• Video – Video scene search functionality will provide thumbnails to help you find a particular scene in a video more easily.
• Information Board – The Information Board will be able to include direct links to PlayStation Store, making it easier for PS3 owners to download content that they read about on the Information Board.
• Power save – PS3 owners will have the option to automatically shut-off their console or controllers after pre-selected periods of inactivity.
• Flash 9 content becomes supported on the Internet Browser.
PSP Firmware 5.00 Update
The PSP Firmware 5.00 update will add direct PlayStation Store access to the system, eliminating the need for PSP to be connected to a PC or PS3 to download content. PSP owners will be able to download games, demos, trailers, and other game-related content anytime and anywhere that their PSP is connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi. This functionality delivers on the portable promise of PSP, making the device even more compelling for gaming and entertainment on-the-go.
Additional enhancements delivered through PSP 5.00 will include:
• On-screen keyboard – A full-size, on-screen keyboard will be added to make text entry during Web browsing easier and more convenient.
• Sleep timer – During music playback, a sleep timer will enable users to shut off their PSP after a specified amount of time.
• Video-out – The PSP-2000’s video-out feature will be able to display PlayStation format software (classics titles) at the full-screen size of the TV that the PSP is connected to; the feature will also support interlace displays.
• Flash 9 content becomes supported on the Internet Browser.
Woot!?! Why didn’t they write about this on the us blog? Nice going.

Wow, this is probably the second best PS3 update ever (first has to 2.40, that was epic). Can’t wait to download this bad boy in the morning.
Comment by tw33t3rz — Oct 14, 2008 @ 12:27 pm
I like the shut-off feature as I’ll be able to queue up all the stuff worth downloading from the Stores and have this shut-down the console when finished, allowing me to do it overnight. Lots of the other stuff is interesting too - the HQ audio on the new headset will be great. I hope games such as Warhawk and wipeout get patched to support this. The information board will probably stay disabled on my XMB - unless they’ve cleaned it up cosmetically - sorry but it looks ugly! Great to see they’ve improved the trophy system. I guess they can see it’s become a hit with many of us and is a game-seller so it’s well worth their effort.

“capture screenshots in-game with supporting titles”
yeah…. mmm… just like all those titles supporting in game music hey?
i hope to grud there’s an option to turn off the in game trophy notification, i can see that being intrusive and a bit bloody pointless, bleep, icon flashes on screen, distraction from gameplay, illusion of other reality create by game totally destroyed.
flash 9, about time, but seriously, can we haz firefox as a browser plzktnx.
*sits back to expect 2.50 killed my ps3 post to appear*

Interesting that they talk about the HD audio for Resistance 2 and not SOCOM. Is SOCOM still coming out in Europe?

Nice updates, look forward to the headset support and the Flash 9 for the porn and iplayer, and the PSP store too, Thanks Sony.
Comment by Mostyn — Oct 14, 2008 @ 12:56 pm
where’d my post vanish too???
anyhoo, “capture screenshots in-game with supporting titles” just like the fully inplimented in-game music yeah? pfft.
but seeing as we have two titles out already, Wipeout and Linger in Shadows, that let you capture screenshots i hardly think it’s needed in a FW update.
Information Board = fail still, let us use our own RSS feeds in there please.
Trophy in-game notification ?? i can’t imagine anything worse personally than some horrible little icon and a bleep flashing up on screen to destroy the illusion of reality the game developers have carefully crafted. it’s on par with a mobile phone going off in the cinema. there better be an option to disable it is all i can say.
Headset support.. meh, i use the mic built into my Eye with no problems at all.
Flash 9. whoop-de-do if only the PS3 had a decent browser to go with it. can we get firefox on the console PLEASE!!
i think i’ve covered my gripes, 2.50, nothing special at all. all there is to do now is sit back and wait for all the 2.50 killed my ps3 posts.
Comment by formally known as MobileTone — Oct 14, 2008 @ 1:09 pm
What we need is an autoinstall feature, so that if you have enough HD space it automagically installs demos/games after they have downloaded. Then shuts down. Then the download feature would be complete.

This happens already but there will be the actual trophy achieved shown, not a generic bronze, silver or whatever one. I actually love the fact it pops up in the corner of the screen, it shows you have achieved the task in hand and if you are a trophy whore it’s invaluable.

Also:
“Headset support.. meh, i use the mic built into my Eye with no problems at all.”
Hmmm, I have the eye and the mics not that good to be honest, too much background noise and feedback when others speak back to you and they hear themselves from your speakers.
The official BT headset will dock & charge, has the High Quality mode to improve speech clarity and reduce background noise, and you will be able to check the battery level on screen, which is very very handy IMO.
I get the impression you’re having a bad day and just fancy having a moan over what I and many others see as a decent update.
Comment by Robothamster — Oct 14, 2008 @ 1:56 pm
@Savage - Autodownload feature would be even better. I.e. we would subscribe to new content in the same way you do for a podcast / vidcast where each new episode is automatically downloaded the moment it becomes available. We could then subscribe to all demos or all trailers for example. I’m gonna call this a “StoreCast!” SONY are you listening? In your next update I’d like to have support for StoreCasts please!

Once we have mkv video support I shall have the complete media player. And it will be coming soon because the DivX corp have decided to use the mkv container for DivX 7, so to stay DivX certified they’ll need to include it.

It doesn’t matter what features Sony add to the firmware, great or otherwise, people always bitch about it.
And people who use the PSEye mic in games are a royal PITA, as it picks up every bit of background noise, and the sound from the game itself, often causing horrendous echo for everyone else. If you want to videochat with friends, use your PSEye - if you’re playing games with others, get a damn headset.

I understand why they keep the crappy browser around: It has a very small memory footprint so it can be loaded by games which want to display a web page.
But that doesn’t mean Sony couldn’t add a full-featured (Firefox) browser which runs as it’s own exclusive application for when someone really wants to browse the web.

Nice stuff, would like to see more updates for the music playback capabilities though, like having the option to pick how you want music outputted vs BR vs games, e.g. if you want to use HDMI for games, Optical for Music and HDMI for video.
Still, it’s getting there Sony, good show.

I’ve run Firefox (2.0, granted) on my PS3. It runs fine. Sure a 256 MB Windows XP box is a little thin. But Linux or the XMB leaves a lot more room for programs.

I hope SOCOM is still coming out, I have it preordered at GAME! According to their website it will be out in “November”.
I wasn’t going to get SOCOM but I wanted the new headset, then I spotted that you can preorder the headset for £29.99 at Game, or preorder the SOCOM bundle WITH the headset for… £29.99 at Game!!!
In other words SOCOM is free for people wanting the headset!!!
I don’t know if this is an error on Game’s part though, maybe the standalone headset will go down (or maybe the SOCOM bundle will go up), but they are usually good at ordering preorder prices…
Comment by Apnomis — Oct 14, 2008 @ 3:56 pm
@29 Apnomis
Exactyl what I did yesterday. Game promise that if the price of a pre-order goes down they will charge you the lower price, but will never put it up from what you have pre-ordered it at. And the loyalty card thing is good and you get posted the games a day before they come out. I want to hate them, but I can’t.
Comment by TheFamousKevin — Oct 14, 2008 @ 4:15 pm
I take it this will be a global update and not region specific? The only reason I ask is that there seems to be quite a few things on the US announcment not on this announcement and vise versa?
I’m guessing that they’ve just decided to highlight different things (although I find it odd that the US blog didn’t make more of a fuss over Flash 9 as loads of people have asked for that!)?
Assuming it is a global update, here is a combined summary of the features announced by SCEE and SCEA. It’s actually a pretty decent update that addresses a lot of the recurring requests from the community, you really would have to be a hater to find fault with it…
Support for the PS3 Official Bluetooth Headset (HQ Mode and Status Bars)
PlayStation Trophies interface enhancements (Tweaks to the profile and compare screens to include level % complete)
Game-specific Trophy Notification (The in-game notification will now include the specific Trophy icon created by the developer)
Friend status (Offline friends will have “last online” date/time information)
Video Scene Search (Activating will break the video up into scene thumbnails that you can quickly access by pressing the X button)
Videos under the video section can be set to play in sequence.
PlayStation Store Redeem Voucher (added to the store so no need to access Account Management)
PlayStation Network Sign Up and Account Management have been redesigned.
Information Board Update (Stories can now include direct links to PlayStation Store)
Power Save Settings (Set your PS3 and wireless controllers to turn off automatically after set periods of inactivity)
Unattended Downloading (You now set the PS3 to turn off automatically after a background download or installation of content has completed)
In-game Screenshots (capture gameplay moments if supported by the game)
Flash 9 content becomes supported on the Internet Browser
Comment by Apnomis — Oct 14, 2008 @ 4:20 pm
@Apnomis,
SOCOM is still out for UK mid Nov, don’t worry.
The RRP for the bundle is £39.99 but some places are doing it for £29.99 as is the norm these days to get the pre-order count up.
I’ve ordered mine through PLAY at £29.99 and it’s a great game (in the beta) but I’ll be honest and say I’m really only after the headset!
Comment by Robothamster — Oct 14, 2008 @ 4:33 pm
@ 30 TheFamousKevin,
You’re right about that, the GAME retail stores are crap (and expensive), but their online business is actually very competitive! With double-reward points on preorders, free release day delivery (never had one come late, only early!), and 11% Quidco cashback, it’s not often I find it cheaper elsewhere!
For SOCOM with Headset I paid £29.99 less £1.50 reward points, less £3.30 Quidco = £25.19, plus I had £3 on my reward card already, so it actually only cost me £22.19, which is a bargain!
GAME often have £5 voucher codes too that can be used as many times as you like (check somewhere like HotUKDeals and then fill your boots on preorders!), sadly there’s none available at the minute but had there been it would have only cost me £17!!!
People who complain that PS3 games (or any games for that matter) are expensive are people who don’t know how to make the most out of the internet!!!
Before now I’ve had games delivered to me on release day that have cost me under £20 all things considered, then I see people in GAME stores that same weekend forking out £50 for the same thing!
Comment by Apnomis — Oct 14, 2008 @ 4:44 pm

Everyone complaining about the in-game trophy notifications… are you blind, or stupid, or never actually play on your PS3, or… what? This is nothing new, you already get an in-game notification when you achieve a trophy. The only new bit is that they are now showing the game’s trophy icon instead of a generic one.

@ tw33t3rz - you’re looking for a smack mate. i stick by my opinion that 2.50 has nothing to interest me. maybe the ’screen capture’ option but after the farce of in-game music i’m not holding my breath on that one.
@ Robothamster - i don’t chat ‘in-game’ too many fracking idiots like tw33terz online shouting about the size of their dick. more often than not i have them muted. and as for trophies.. not a fan of them at all. pointless bloody addition.
so, Sony brings out an update that i think sucks, that’s my feeling on the matter and i’m entitled to it, if they come up with anything i like i’ll say so, i’m fair like that. but as far as i’m concerned this update is just a prep’ for when they bring Home out and is of as much interest as their ‘improved playback’ (read: security issues) updates they bring out.

So theyre NOT putting support for managing PSN friends on the PSP after all? Thats a huge let down because at the moment its a real pain having to use a PS3 just to add a friend. Oh well, still looks good. To be honest Id rather have proper PSN support than the store. But oh well, cant wait!

Will the patch update the Quicktime playback compatibility??? Most trailers I download are HD Quicktime and it’s frustrating that the latest codecs aren’t supported!! Please keep the codecs updated Sony!!!
Plus Xvid playback would be great too

FYI:
2:20am: Use of the “PLAYSTATION(r)Store” icon from the XrossMediaBar “PLAYSTATION(r)Network” menu now presents:
—
An error has occurred.
(80023017)
—
…and the “Settings” / “System Update” icon still offers the latest update being “Version 2.43″.
The latest update for the PSP System Software is still 4.05 as well.

They need to change the blue PSN icon & make all icons match again! What they have now looks very messy, not to mention it screws up the continuity of any theme applied.

Hi,
I like the new firmware for the fact that I can see when my friends were last signed in, plus flash9 support is good. So i want to thank you for that.
What i don’t like however is the way that video is displayed now.
All videos that are not encoded with 25 frames per second are displayed in 60hz mode.
For me this means that the quality is considerably less, seeing as even HD content is downscaled to 480 horizontal lines instead of the 576 that my Philps 100HZ widescreen crt is capable of. Is there an option to change this? Or can you please fix it?
It would be much better to have a “force 50hz video output”-option in the menu.
Greetings from Holland,
Elias.

Yeah, I like the little tweaks that this new FW gives us, but it’s hardly ground breaking. Timing out of the controllers was something that should always have been included. Shutting down after a set period or following download completion is a good move, though I bet the Folding@home people will see a reduction of available computing power after this. What I’d like to see, is a more robust a quicker web browser, more eye candy musical visualisations (PS3 version of milkdrop from Winamp anybody?), and the ability to install my games to the HDD (or alternatively, be allowed to download the game from the PSN for a vastly reduced cost if you have the hardcopy - I want BurnoutParadise HDD installed).
Minor tweaks I’d like would be the ability to turn off the clock (only showing it when I press the ps button); Turn off trophy win announcements; Rip multi-channel CD’s and SACD’s to the HDD like we can with CD’s.
Not too much to ask is it?

@Hammertime. Oh forget it.
@LordOfRuin - I think these features would be nice ones to have too. Top of my list is support for the m4a container format used for AAC content in Apple’s iTunes. The PS3 can parse it to retrieve the song itself and the song title, but nothing else. I.e. if you want to move your iTunes library to your PS3, the PS3 doesn’t organise it into album, genre, and so on. You just get all the songs in one huge heap! Or at least that’s what happened the last time I tried it. Perhaps I should have another attempt at this - Sony may have fixed it by now. Anyway, all the time Sony have enthusiastic users / fans submitting new ideas they’ll always have work to do! Thankfully they’re responding to us and slowly but surely the PS3 gets better and better! Thanks guys!

LATEST 2.50 PS3 UPDATE BRICKED MY CONSOLE!
Comment by Unhappy Camper — Oct 16, 2008 @ 12:33 pm
I have owned my 60 GB PS3 Since January Last Year and a day after the 2.50 update it died while my brother was playing Fifa 09…
Help please!!! Am not saying the new firmware broke my ps3, that would be a wild accusation but it is perculiar…
Comment by John — Oct 16, 2008 @ 4:50 pm
the latest firmware appears to have broken psstore access for me… everything else on the console works fine, but I just get “an error has occured” (80023017) dialog when i try it.
i can access the internet from it fine.. what gives?
Comment by phonicpod — Oct 16, 2008 @ 9:43 pm
I got my 60gb PS3 last November and so far it is still alive after the 2.50 update. But then I don’t have Fifa 09 to confirm that that combination does brick PS3s.
But like phonicpod, I can’t get into the PS Store and get the same (80023017) error when trying to log in. Though Pure allowed me to log into online multi-player.
For the last 3 or 4 releases there have always been problems with the firmware updates. Come on Sony, sort it aout maaaan!!!! Does naought make thee lick gewd.
Comment by Savage — Oct 16, 2008 @ 10:53 pm
I just read over at the official US blog ( http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/10/16/playstation-network-temporary-unscheduled-maintenance/ ) that some urgent downtime was needed for the PSN Store. So hopefully things will be back to normal for the week-end.
Comment by Savage — Oct 16, 2008 @ 11:17 pm
I phoned Sony who where very understanding and waived the usual reapir fee because my unit is out of warranty. They did recommend that I take the PS3 continuous play to ensure am covered and I received a new 60GB PS3 from sony within 3 days thats a fast turnaround well done Sony!
Comment by John — Oct 21, 2008 @ 2:43 pm
Well done, John.
Sounds like you’ll be back online soon.
Of course anybody in the same position could just take out the “Continuous Play” warranty when their console dies & then ring up a day later.
(Much like you would do if your car refused to go & you rang up a vehicle breakdown recovery agency to get a temporary cover reference minutes before reporting your incident).
PS.

Firmware 2.50 adds hidden recovery menu
Posted Oct 18th 2008 12:50AM by Andrew Yoon
It appears that firmware 2.50 also added one other feature, meant to help PS3 owners that are trying to troubleshoot their system. A recovery menu [image at the above URL] gives users access to a variety of restore features. It will even allow users to install a new firmware update, should anything go wrong during the installation process. To access the menu, you must hold down the power button to turn on the PS3 until you hear three beeps. Then the menu will show up.
There are a few reports of systems bricking after firmware updates, so this may be Sony’s attempt at creating a fix for future problems. Hopefully, we’ll never have to actually use this feature — but if we do, it may be a quick way of avoiding a trip to the post office to send the PS3 to Sony’s support center.

Sorry guys, just wondering if anyone new, I downloaded an update for my PS3 and now it won’t play any games…..I tried to do a restore from back up, didn’t work, so I think it was a firmware update that went bad.
How does one roll back a firmware update ?
Comment by Jed — Apr 1, 2009 @ 11:32 am
Hi Jed,
Sorry to read about your problem.
You can try downloading a particular firmware revision to an external USB hard drive, or a flash memory stick, and installing from this source, rather than from the Internet:
However, I would contact Sony’s Customer Support in the first instance as they may be able to assist to a greater degree than my guesswork.
There is a very comprehensive Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) section online, or you can try telephoning directly.
From the “Contact Us” section…
