SCEE has supplied us with the official statement on the situation regarding LittleBigPlanet…
During the review process prior to the release of LittleBigPlanet, it has been brought to our attention that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur’an. We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologise for any offence that this may have caused.
We will confirm the new launch date shortly.
We’ll keep you updated with further information as soon as we get it.
UPDATE
We’ve just been informed by SCEE that the delay to release is effective worldwide.

Would this action have been taken for a Christian song with offensive lyrics? Not least to say the lyrics just happen to come from ‘that book’! So, now we can’t utter those, oh say, 20,000 or more words in any order for fear of offending Muslims? Give over! Don’t delay the game, I urge you (not that SCEE would ever, for one minute, make a decision based on community feedback…) at least to release a patch, if you really must.

I understand that Muslims consider the Koran to be sacred and some of them would be offended by the use of verses from it but that doesn’t mean the rest of us have to tip-toe around stuff they don’t like.( I should add that I’m an atheist and feel the same way about all religion)

I can literally hear or read “goddamn” in probably over 100 videogames–including many PS2 and PS3 titles–and that’s quite literally breaking a commandment. It greatly upsets me that no one ever seems to care about Christians and what they find offensive to their faith, but everyone bends over backwards to please the Muslims.
Don’t get me wrong though. I’m not against Muslims, and I’m not against making a little change here and there for the sake of the Muslim faith. What I am against is the HUGE double standard that exists regarding these matters.

What a crock. This is the dumbest thing I have seen Sony do. I read at Joystiq that Media Molecule has a patch ready to go on day one. Use the patch. Why on earth would you delay this system seller as well as eat the cost of new discs????
Comment by andy — Oct 17, 2008 @ 6:17 pm
As a Muslim I find this absurd. Here are my reasons:
1. No offense was intended by the inclusion of this song in the game. This isn’t an offensive game. If anything I think it’s great that they were incorporating that culture in their game.
2. It seems like a patch could easily solve this problem.
3. This action is likely to incite people against a culture that many already have a lot of negative feelings towards.
4. The game has been in one of the most public Beta’s I’ve ever seen. How could this not go unnoticed long enough to cause a delay in the game?
5. The people who initially posted the complaint on the blog asked that the game be patched to correct the problem anyway (not withheld).
I’m upset about the delay too and really feel like this is a poor choice of how to handle this situation.
Comment by Tarek — Oct 17, 2008 @ 6:18 pm
What the hell are you doing SCEE?
What are you trying to correct? What political correctness? Is the song racist?
What is this fear of Islam and the Qu’ran?! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?! WTF ARE YOU DOING!?
Comment by curryking1 — Oct 17, 2008 @ 6:26 pm
They can’t solve it with a patch because not everyone has their PS3 hooked up to the internet.
But to recall the game is ridiculous.
Islam is a religion of peace and love so if the inclusion of quotes from their holy fairy tale caused offence, surely they would have forgiven Sony?
Comment by Dave — Oct 17, 2008 @ 6:27 pm
Well as many time as Sony has been sued lately over the most ridiculus things, I guess they are covering their backs.
Even tho no offense was meant, it only takes one person to complain and thats it.
Comment by talak — Oct 17, 2008 @ 6:32 pm
Here’s a suggestion. Can we at least get a demo to download from PSStore or open the beta back up with extra keys for all to try. I wanted to try the beta but found out when there were no more keys left.
Since then, I’ve pre-ordered the game and been waiting patiently just to be told that these two lines in a song will force a recall. That the same song has already been on the radio and can be purchased. It doesn’t really make sense.
Comment by xtaticmatrix — Oct 17, 2008 @ 6:33 pm

This delay is all kinds of wrong! I know people with time of work, me included, expecting to play this game. In my case it’s my birthday present, a preorder from months ago. There’s bound to be a lot of anger directed at Muslims because of this, which is unconstructive and totally contrary to the nature of LBP.
The obvious solution is a patch and a revision. This was acceptible for Zelda Ocarina of Time, where a patch wasn’t even possible : http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=13264025&postcount=1424
Failing that, get a substantial download version so those who have timetabled LBP will still have it to play.
Also why isn’t htere a cultural review board during the certification process to ensure things like this don’t slip through? A review of content, scripts and audio would catch these things before the presses. In this case a removal of the song, a quick replacement, could have been used.

I am completely dissapointed by this decison. This isn’t the first case where something like this has happened. Why can’t it be patched or handled the same ways it was with other games?
It’s been nothing but frustration with this product. After trying and failing to get into the beta, and now having to wait God knows how long, I’m ready to bail on this game and devote my time to Fable 2 and Fallout instead.
How about putting the patched game on the Playstation store on Tuesday for purchase? Oh wait, that would make all of your retailers pitch a fit.
Ironically, delaying the game will cause more negative attention than just issuing a statement and patching it.

==========================================================
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resistance:_Fall_of_Man
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_Ca…Man_Controversy
Resistance, along with Sony and Insomniac Games, has since become embattled with The Church of England for purportedly illegal use of interior shots of Manchester Cathedral to recreate the building within the game, as well as “promoting violence” within the building.
On 9 June 2007, the Church of England demanded an apology from Sony Computer Entertainment for briefly featuring Manchester Cathedral in the PlayStation 3 game Resistance: Fall of Man. The church also demanded that the game be removed from shop shelves or they would consider legal action. They also requested a “substantial donation”.[2] Sony has apologized and has stated that it was not their intention to cause offense.”
==========================================================
No recall, no patch, no action taken whatsoever, other than “Yeah, whatever, sorry about that. Wait, are you still here? We’re not actually going to do anything for you, go away!”
Double standard much?

That way we would never have another delay, sony would not have us bad mouthing them and everyone would be happy?
I just find it insulting that we have to be dictated to by philosiphies that should have long since died, and have been replaced by fact, science & reason. Religion is holding back the advancement of the human race & causing death & destruction across this planet, is it possible to patch religions so that they cause no offence to me and my values as an atheist?

@theholk - a couple of us posted a link to the source of the drama in the other thread about LBP. Basically a guy on the official eu forum complained that he was personally offended by it. In my opinon Sony’s knee-jerk reaction is over-the-top. However, I reckon they’re keen to avoid a huge media stink about this. Imagine what would happen to sales of the game if the mainstream press were to get hold of this story and blow it out of proportion. Rightly or wrongly they’re acting proactively by eliminating the risk of that happening.
Comment by reakt — Oct 17, 2008 @ 9:28 pm
Firstly, thank you Three Speech for bringing this to our attention prior to everybody else picking-up on the announcement this weekend & our favourite Sony-themed blog seemingly being last to report the news.
“During the review process prior to the release of LittleBigPlanet…”
Pardon me for asking, but if it has been reported by many web sites & blogs across the world that “LittleBigPlanet” has gone ‘gold’ why would a review process be undertaken after production of the commercial edition of the title had started?
Something about this doesn’t add up. Let’s hope this is ‘old’ news & the necessary steps to rectify the problem have been ongoing for a few weeks now, and Sony were hoping that the release date wouldn’t be affected, but now they’ve released that they cannot meet next Friday’s date.
@25 [talak]:
Yup… the fuss about a fictional first person shooter title that had digitally represented what Manchester Cathedral would look like if an alien race had descended on Earth in the 1950s was enough for Sony representatives to retrospectively apologise to The Church of England for being alive, or ever considering picking up a joypad controller in the first place.
With my “testing head” on, I would have to advise that a fundamental change to the underlying game code that affects more than one component would require regression testing to ensure that no other components had been adversely affected by the amendment.
i.e. The Beta Test Team members should expect a call-back.
Of course, this won’t happen. Sony will recall all the already pressed & boxed Blu-ray discs from the logistics Companies who would be delivering them to the UK stores & online retailer warehouses next Tuesday/Wednesday at a massive cost (at a time they could do with a massive profit) & will receive no end of negative publicity because a release date has been missed… again.
Microsoft will re-advertise their already reduced consoles next week, probably to the extent they did on the Japanese release date of the PS3. Out of the 64 pages in the 17 November 2006 edition of the South East England âMetroâ free-distribution newspaper only 19 did not mention or have an advertisement for the XBox 360, a game on the XBox 360, or XBox Live!
A Microsoft press officer will also âaccidentallyâ let slip that there may be a shortage of machines by mid-November, hoping this will target worried parents still waiting for their Credit-Crunch-adjusted Christmas Bonus & THEY will be âforcedâ to go out & buy an Xbox 360 & âFable IIâ as that other game (”LittleBigSomethingOrOther”) little Johnny & little Jane wanted is not available at the end of October when Christmas shopping starts. Pre-orders of 80Gb consoles with the free copy of “LittleBigPlanet” will be cancelled as Play dot com e-mail every customer to advise that they cannot deliver & do not know when they can… but they do have other consoles available.
The launch of the 160Gb PS3 consoles will be over-shadowed by annoyed punters visiting GAME(Station), HMV, Zavvi, Woolworths & other ‘good’ high street stockists to keep asking if there is any word on a revised release date.
The copyright holders of the (so-called) offending licensed track will need to be contacted & their permission gained to change the original composition, and the revised track will then need to pass video game rating clearance in European, US, Asian, and other worldwide territories.
It’s certainly not a quick process, but given Sony’s recent turn-around of System Software Firmware Update 2.40 to 2.41 in six days in early July I have every confidence they are doing their utmost to ensure the title is revised & reissued in an expedient manner.
I only hope I can save face with all the people I have been ’selling’ the PS3 to on the strength of the availability of “LittleBigPlanet” in time for Christmas. If only I was âon commissionâ⊠I wouldâve earned enough to buy a âLittleBigPlanetâ promo copy from eBay by now!
This year will be Microsoft’s last ditch attempt to get their console under Christmas Trees (notwithstanding the imminent update to the Live Experience on 19 November paving the way for software piracy at the expense of trying to shift as many boxes as possible & saturating the market so word-of-mouth ’sells’ the console in future). They’re even giving away Memory Cards to all the early adopters who don’t have enough capacity to run the update. Couple this with the three year warranty scheme that received loads of press in July 2007, and you have to think that Microsoft are now just playing catch-up with the Sony console. You never hear Sony representatives go on about the like-for-like exchange policy (wherever possible) after the initial 12 months have elapsed. Perhaps because they don’t have to!
Sony should be running red rings around Microsoft by now.
This should have been the year of the PlayStation.
Let’s hope that’s not delayed too.

Sony did the right thing. The Koran explicitly states that verses from it must not be used in electronic video entertainment. Just like the Bible states that cathederals should not be depicted as battle grounds between fictional humans and alien hordes. I thought everyone knew that. Bronze Age mythology had all bases covered.

Media Molecule comments on LittleBigPlanet delay, new dates revealed
Posted Oct 17th 2008 2:15PM by Jem Alexander
Media Molecule has made a statement regarding the disappointing LittleBigPlanet delay. It’s clear they’re gutted about the situation (as are we), but overall the blog post remains upbeat. Apparently a patch and an updated master disc was ready less than 12 hours after the offensive material was discovered. This patch is ready to go the second the game is launched and will somehow fix the problem (we suspect it will just replace the music in question with something else — perhaps some 50 Cent would be less offensive?).
Sony has seen fit to recall the game and delay it, regardless. This is an ass-covering move to make sure that even those without internet access have nothing to complain about. Media Molecule apologises and looks forward to a time when this whole messy situation is put behind us and people are happily playing the game.
Update 1: A new PlayStation Blog post tells us that the game will now ship the week of October 27th in America.
Update 2: UK site Electronic Theatre has obtained an updated mailout which shows the UK release date as October 31st. Funnily enough this is the game’s original release date in the region, before it got pulled forward a week. Funny how things work out, isn’t it?

Personally I am disgusted that Sony would pander to the needs of a vocal minority (and in this case, the song in question is over two years old), and recall the game. This sets a dangerous precedent - should Crysis not be recalled for its portrayal of Koreans? What about the arabs in Call of Duty 4? Should, now that Sony has gone back on their statement, Resistance be recalled due to the inclusion of Manchester Cathedral? Tolerance is a two-way street, and part of Freedom of speech is the freedom to include something that, yes, someone somewhere will probably take as offensive. Personally I find it more disgusting that Sony considers the Muslim community to clearly be more “dangerous” than these other groups, which is just the opposite of racial sensitivity.
I still want the game, but I am very much torn on whether I can now morally purchase it.

Well done Sony, of course you do realise that this means you will need to setup a religous guidance council with representatives from every religion and they must all approve a game before release.
Of course this will mean further delays, I hear Home’s new release date is now christm….urm I mean Winter holidays 2015. And Resistance 2 will be out at Easte….. urm I mean ‘Non-religous bunny day’ 2017.
The only thing offensive is Sony’s knee jerk reaction by giving into these people as well as showing a shocking level of double standards when they refused to do the same thing when Christians complained about Resistance: Fall of Man.

@fanpages - Let’s not blow things out of proportion. This is a huge inconvenience for Sony as they’ll have to do a product recall, manufacture new disks and so on as you mentioned. However, they’re a big company and can take the hit for the sake of their reputation. For us gamers it’s not that much of an inconvenience is it? - we have to wait an extra week or so… big deal. Sony’s knee-jerk reaction was surely intended to stop the kind of bad publicity that you talked about. So given the facts I don’t think that this will reflect that badly on Sony after all.

Despite being disappointed by the delay to what will certainly be a great game, i’m furious over the circumstance surrounding the delay.
As a fellow forum user stated perfectly:
“Resistance has a full on fire fight in
Manchester Cathedral. Some Christians get offended. Sony “Meh”.
LittleBigPlanet has a couple of phrases buried in the background of a

Complete double standards. And, as Christian, I take considerable offence at this difference in attitudes shown between the two events. Shame on you Sony.

I see this as a good thing. There are always religious zealots out there that would make a big stink over this and eventually Sony would have to recall the discs and make a mandatory patch for the game and in the process get bad publicity. So why not just skip all that and go ahead and fix it now? Also, this game is delayed for everyone. I really don’t see the big deal with waiting a few extra weeks. Its not like its FFXIII type of delay.

Dude, you make a good point. When people are making fun of the prophet and Islamic nations get pissed off people scream “Freedom of speech”. As soon as the Quran or anything about Islam is put into a good light people scream up and down trying to oppress it. My friend we are living in a two faced world. We can make games about a war that has Americans/Allies killing Muslims but if there ever came a game where the plot is that you had to make roadside bombs to kill Americans/Allies then there would be an uproar.

Also COD4 was actually edited prior to launch,
Hitman (forget which one) was recalled due to Sikhs complaining that a mission had a scene in similar to a massacre in a temple
(I am a non-practising Sikh, by the way)
Grand Theft Auto - Vice City (newer editions) was edited to remove Anti-Hatian references…

Comment by JohnSketch — Oct 18, 2008 @ 1:47 pm
The difference here, as I see it, is that these other games were edited at or around the time of their release. To recall a game because of a song which is written by a Muslim and has been on general sale for two years is preposterous.
Also, why is it only NOW that people are finding this offensive? And why are they complaining to Sony, and not the artist himself?
Comment by Paranoimia — Oct 18, 2008 @ 1:53 pm
@Mr.Monkey
The issue with the Resistance complaints is not over any lack of action, but the difference in company policy to the 2 different events, especially as objectively the Resitance thing seemed a bigger issue.
But I should add i’d also have been disappointed if they did take action over the Resistance thing, as it seems some poeople just like to complain about video game content for the sake of complaining.

While playing your latest game, “LittleBigPlanet” in the first level of the third world in the game (titled “Swinging Safari”, I have noticed something strange in the lyrics of the music track of the level. When I listened carefully, I was surprised to hear some very familiar Arabic words from the Quran. You can listen to part of the track here:
mt14.quickshareit.com/share/p…lip22503c0.wav
The words are:
1- In the 18th second: “ÙÙ ÙÙŰł ۰ۧۊÙŰ© ۧÙÙ ÙŰȘ” (”kollo nafsin tha’iqatol mawt”, literally: ‘Every soul shall have the taste of death’).
2- Almost immediately after, in the 27th second: “ÙÙ Ù Ù ŰčÙÙÙۧ ÙŰ§Ù” (”kollo man alaiha fan”, literally: ‘All that is on earth will perish’).
I asked many of my friends online and offline and they heard the exact same thing that I heard easily when I played that part of the track. Certain Arabic hardcore gaming forums are already discussing this, so we decided to take action by emailing you before this spreads to mainstream attention.
We Muslims consider the mixing of music and words from our Holy Quran deeply offending. We hope you would remove that track from the game immediately via an online patch, and make sure that all future shipments of the game disk do not contain it.
We would also like to mention that this isn’t the first time something like this happened in videogames. Nintendo’s 1998 hit “Zelda: Ocarina of Time” contained a musical track with islamic phrases, but it was removed in later shipments of the game after Nintendo was contacted by Muslim organizations. Last year, Capcom’s “Zack & Wiki” and Activision’s “Call of Duty 4″ also contained objectionable material offensive to Muslims that was spotted before the release of the final games, and both companies thankfully removed the content.
We hope you act immediately to avoid any confusion and unnecessary controversy, and we thank you for making such an amazing game.
Regards,

If that was the original complaint, then why would Sony not follow the recommendations of the complaint?
” We hope you would remove that track from the game immediately via an online patch, and make sure that all future shipments of the game disk do not contain it.”
It seems silly to recall the stock when all that was asked by those offended was to release a patch and to make sure that future copies did not contain the offensive soundtrack. Which is fair enough.
The amount of bad publicity Sony will receive as a result of a recall is surely more than if they would have apologised and patched immediately, and according to MM they had a fix for the problem already.
Does not make any sense to me at all, far worse happens in games and no one bats an eyelid.

“they are the most hated person on the planet”
Bit harsh I think, it’s only a playstation game
I understand Sony being careful, they got burnt with Resistance, just want to be careful.
The more cynical person might suggest this is actually quite good publicity:
1) make people want it more as they have to wait
2) Get coverage in mainstream media.
3) make people in certain areas of the world more aware of the game, and more sympathetic towards it
The fact that it took less than 24 hours to produce a new master disk suprises me. While it was probably a simple change it amazes me it can be tested properly in that time.
Comment by john — Oct 19, 2008 @ 8:47 am
@John - Media Molecule don’t need the extra publicity. LBP is already all over the mainstream media - newspaper and TV. Even my Dad had heard of the game when I asked him! And all this, before the recall.

The zealous followers of Islam that would be offended by this should not be using video games, their religion, if they follow it that strictly, forbids it.
the fact that month after month we ask Sony for features and such in updates, 100,000’s of loyal PS3 users that love the brand supporting it in everyway, and mostly all we get is a big fat -meh- from Sony. one person makes a complaint and suddenly it’s all rush rush panic panic to pull a game and get the update patched.
i think that’s what’s jerking most peoples chains.
this is not good publicity, it’s the worst kind ever.
1- it makes me want to never buy anything from Sony again.
2- hasn’t it been in the media enough already for good reasons?
3- who and where? your points are flacid at best.
also of note, is that this devout muslim (Solid_08) that made the complaint uses Hale from Fall of Man as a user icon!! note that the koran also bans followers from listening to music and mast-rbation (i’m pretty sure Solid_08 does both, frantically) so technically ANY game with ANY music would be offensive to muslims if there is no option to turn the in-game music off.
just how ridiculous do we get here?
Sony is now guilty of positive racism.
whatever happened to, if you don’t like it, don’t buy it?
why has everyone else got to now suffer because of some
self righteous wa-kers.

I have been loyal to Sony for the longest time, I even own BetaMax FFS, but this really has p*ssed me right off…
WORLDWIDE DELAY!!! Just a lot shorter a delay for them good old yanks, ‘cos they obviously deserve it more than us!
No wonder 360 fan boys have so much ammunition toward the PS3, Sony act like such a bunch of retards all the time with their lack of being able to deliver any of their exclusive big hitters within an advertised and original timescale!
All in all, this has really knocked my confidence in any of Sony’s future announcments, cus just like Home, LBP and Wipeout HD… They will all get delayed again and again and again, it isnt fun anymore and they may pay off when they finally arrive, but it gets to the point where all the waiting and gettin my hopes up becomes just pathetic and irritating!
Dear Sony,
Get your heads out of your asses and stop dropping the damn ball everytime you gain a step ahead in the market, treat Europe with respect, we are biger in number and therefore much more profit can be generated by us for either Sony or MS! Its your choice which one, but FYI Xbox are advertising all over the show, Xbox to the average parent who knows jack about things, is cheaper, and finally, even though US based, Xbox dont come off on the internet like complete US biased bastards who couldnt give a damn about the other worldwide regions as long as their lil yank gamers are happy!
Just a peice of advice as you seem to be handling everything poorly at the moment, seems to be huge chunk of internet concencus to back this up too!

I have been loyal to Sony for the longest time, I even own BetaMax FFS, but this really has p*ssed me right off… WORLDWIDE DELAY!!!
GRRRRRRR… RANT OVER!
sorry about that, just very angry when I saw that difference in delay dates, its bang out of order!

oh well, at least Midnight Club: Los Angeles is out this friday.
but what was going to a happy launch for LBP is now tainted with a bitter taste in the mouth. i dread to think about the amount of anti islam/mohammad/muslim/koran levels that are now going to be created when it does eventually go live.

This is what I’m taking about, this is publicity you can’t buy.
One of the top stories on the BBC is about this. At the moment everyone to do with gaming knows about the game, but now people who know nothing about games will read this. So next time they are looking for christmas presents for their kids…
I’m not suggesting for a moment that this is why this has happened, but it certainly won’t hurt Sony.

And as for the people saying “Message the person that complained, blah blah blah” don’t you think that’s more than a little inflammatory, hell, even borderline right wing? The amount of grief and racist abuse that this dude is going to get for daring to have the downright cheek to be offended for something being blasphemous is going to be unreal. You do realise that for every message of abuse you send him, you can be prosecuted for inciting racial hatred. And if you do it over PSN, it’s not as if they’ll have your address… oh, hang on, yes they will.
To summarise, don’t be a big bunch of morons, leave the guy alone, don’t be a bigot, don’t be racist and just deal with it.

“How many games have been pulled because they feature US marines on missions to an imaginary Middle Eastern or East European country to kill Muslims or Communists? NONE
How many games exist where you are an heroic Islamic or Communist freedom fighter taking on the imperial might of the US? NONE”
Battlefield 2 - Allowed you to be in the Middle East Army and take out the infidel American pigdogs!
Command and Conquer: Redalert 2 - Control the mighty Soviet Empire as you invade the USA, show those Yankees who’s boss!
Counter Strike - Become a terrorist Martyr or Hostage taker.
There are many many more games that exist where you can play as the opposition to the USA, Britain, WW2 allies etc. However strangely they mostly seem to be PC games. Still the point stands that these game do infact exist. They might be the minority, but lets face it, if you created a game where you control a Terrorist faction and your missions was to blow up London, it ain’t gonna sell so well over here now is it.
Ohhh, and for the love of can Sony please come out and give us a bloody release date already. One guy complains on a forum and within hours the game is pulled worldwide. Three days later and millions of people are still waiting to find out when they can get the game.

@Robothamster
I know what you are saying but allot of people are upset because of the double standards by Sony and not so much the delay.
Iâm piss~d cause I had booked a week off work for the game, I know that is pretty sad but hey thatâs me.
The original complaint found here:
http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:BuPMgf6T4UIJ:community.eu.playstation.com/playstationeu/board/message%3Fboard.id%3D611%26message.id%3D8388+%22tapha+Niang%22+quran&hl=da&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=dk
asked for the game to be patched, which MM has had got ready for day 0, and yet they still recalled. Some may argue that Sony will receive allot of publicity for this that could not have been bought, I personally disagree with that and think that it is more negative publicity than they can not afford at the mo.
allot of people have argued that in other games RFOM, hitman, one of the Zelda games also contained offensive material and was not recalled in the same way. Plus the offending music has been on general sale since 2006 and that was ok and was not recalled and destroyed.
A patch would have been the easiest and fastest way to resolve the problem. And considering that the person/s offended recommended that as a solution because they knew that game had gone gold and the MM obviously meant no offensive by including this song it just seems like madness has taken over Sony.

Thanks for your support friend.
I have always been an advocate of equality and justice and felt I had to throw my hat back into the ring on such a serious matter after retiring from Threespeech as this as a lot of people on here are out of order.
I always argued for equality and justice for EU PS3 owners but being a little hot headed I was over zealous in a lot of my arguments which got peoples backs up and for that I am sorry but I do not regret it.
On the subject of games which let you play for “the other side” these are usually mulitplayer online games where you have to have two different teams.
The single player story mode of these games is always from a US centric point of view.

@ BaseballFury - the blasphemy laws were repealed earlier this year, there is no such crime anymore. and as for my politics, yes, i am a far right socialist. that is my right, those are my political views. but you won’t get me moaning to sony for the constant portrail of nazis being killed in games, i live with it, that’s how it works.
LBP was pulled on the most flimsy and thinest of reasons.
if they guy that made the original complaint thought he would get away without any sort of comeback then he is either very naive, or stupid as a brick.
he gets everything that’s due to him for upsetting and offending nearly every gamer on the planet.
what about OUR rights hey??

In Reply to:
“Complete double standards. And, as Christian, I take considerable offence at this difference in attitudes shown between the two events. Shame on you Sony.”
I think you miss the point, for way too long, games / books / movies, ECT. Here have been altered, destroyed or refused sale because in some form or another ruling religion doesnât agree with them. The artisans/scholars have been ruled hereticsâ and shunned, stoned and killed, over the years, many great artworks and books of great importance have been lost. And in video games, great thought provoking games like Terranigma [SNES by ENIX] and Xenogears [PS1 by SQUARE] remain unreleased in certain regions. In Europe/Australia, we were lucky enough to somehow get Terranigma released, and unfortunately not lucky enough to get Xenogears, if it wasnât for the internet I would not have known that one of the best RPGs ever created existed. Countless games have been dumbed down, especially Nintendo games during the period of policy of no questionable content what-so-ever, and thankfully these policies donât rule the world now.
In this LBP case, I think, it doesnât really matter much because the song was never really meant to be understood, and was used just to give the game a funky multicultural soundtrack somewhat a kin to katamari demacy’s soundtrack. however if the song was chosen on-purpose to send a message to the gamer, then its a crime that this content has been edited out of this piece of art.

I never said that blasphemy was illegal, I said that sending somebody electronic messages of racial and/or religious hatred is. And, it is.
And seriously, he deserves racial abuse for offendings gamers by being offended himself? Seriously? Can you genuinely say that a human being deserves xenophobic abuse levelled at him because a f*cking PS3 game was delayed a week or so?
If so, then Jesus man, you’re really quite messed up.
Comment by BaseballFury — Oct 21, 2008 @ 11:21 pm
If someone dressed up their Sackboy as a priest and made him run around in a church graphic, wielding a sword and ‘killing’ little spikey weeds or similar, Sony would not bat an eyelid.
It seems that Sony can desecrated Christianity’s places of worship left, right and centre (as in Resistance: FOM), yet even the mere mention of a few lines from the Quran is deemed deeply offensive! All that the track does is MENTION lines from the book, it’s not saying ANYTHING bad against it or anything else for that matter.
So why is Sony not treating all religions equally? Why no clear and unreserved apology about the fire-fight in Manchester Cathedral in R:FOM, yet in LBP’s case, not only is an apology issued but probably Sony’s last chance game at re-establishing itself in the current generation of console wars, as being back on top (because let’s face it, it’s trailing both Nintendo and MS badly at the moment), is WITHDRAWN from marketing altogether.
Cowards! Sony just didn’t want any burning effigies outside their HQs worldwide or worse still…well, I’ll leave that to your imagination.

Harrison: “Sony took absolutely the right decision” to recall LBP
Atari president Phil Harrison has told GamesIndustry.biz that he believes Sony took “absolutely the right decision” in recalling LittleBigPlanet over the controversial references made to the Qur’an.
Harrison, who was previously president of Sony Worldwide Studios before taking on his current role - and who championed the title from the very beginning - also thinks that the delay won’t affect the game’s ultimate success “one iota”.
Answering a question as to whether the game is worth the wait, he didn’t hesitate: “Of course,” he said. “I can only base my answer on my own experience of playing the beta, which was knowing an awful lot about how that product was created, and the passion and energy that the team at Media Molecule and Sony put into it,” he said.
“I downloaded the beta, I sat down to play it, and it’s pretty rare that within five seconds of starting a game you fall in love with a bit of software. And it was just the most fantastic experience, the whole intro sequence, where you’ve got the narration and the video of the dreams coming off the people in real life, going up to form the planet - I just thought that was absolutely inspired.
“And that was done after I left Sony, so all credit to Media Molecule for that, or whoever was responsible. And then you get into the game and it was just smiles all the way.
“So I think people are going to be blown away by the game, and while I’m obviously sad for the stumble, I don’t think it will affect the long term success of the game one iota.”
Speaking on the eve of his keynote at the Unite 08 event in Copenhagen, Harrison added that the decision to pull the game wasn’t one that would have been taken lightly, but one that was fundamental to the core mission of the game.
“I wasn’t privy to all of the discussions and debate that went on within Sony, but I know they would have thought very deeply about it, and at the highest level of the company,” he explained. “And on reflection I think it was absolutely the right thing to do, because LittleBigPlanet set out from day one to be a game for the entire world - and if there was anything that accidentally detracted from that vision and made the game not fun for the entire world, then the game would have fundamentally failed in its mission.
“So I think Sony took absolutely the right decision - painful though it was, and frustrating though it might be for gamers who were looking forward to it. It only seems to have heightened the anticipation, so I think it’ll end up being a win, and full credit to Media Molecule for turning around a fix as quickly as they did.”…

This is greatly understandable. It could be a legal issue with ratings for games. It’s good to be organized and catch things, even if it means a delay. People will still be extremely excited to play it even if it’s backed up a bit. No Worries… looking forward to it!

I completely agree with those who like point this out as a shameful display of double standards. Not only has SCEE stood staunchly by Insomniac during the Resistance controversy, but it was also Sony Pictures who released the way more controversial “DaVinci Code”, enraging a great part of the Christian and Catholic faiths. It is surprising to see such an espontaneous display of sensitivity when it comes to Islam… I wonder whether it has something to do with the “helping hand” that a certain sovereign fund from Dubai gave Sony in 2007, pretty much saving them from the dogs… hypocrates!!!

This is the worst PS3 game lauch ever. Very bad move from Sony -as always- by spreading this damaging buzz towards what would have been a promising title. Not to mention that cowardly decision regarding this so called “offending” song that should be removed from the game. Are we supposed to live in the fear of Islamic terrorism? Sorry, I though I was born in country defending freedom of speech. I won’t buy your game.

Music equals Art……
This song was out a long time ago and I don’t remember ever hearing any controversy regarding it. The CD was not recalled, no death threats were issued, no one’s head exploded upon hearing it. The artists (Toumani Diabate’s Symmetric Orchestra) have won awards and are highly respected, they are from Mali, which is 90% Islamic. No one there noticed or was offended?!?!?!
If someone is offended by something they should not watch it or listen to it. Having everyone else tip toe around to preserve their fragile psyches is wrong. This world is too damn politically correct, it gives me heart burn. I am so tired of the world having to bend over for someone’s religious sensibilities. I am highly offended by ’stupidity’ and I don’t seem to be able to petition the film studios to releasing comedies starring Jim Carey, or making yet another ‘American Pie’ sequel.
The song is beautiful and completely suits the level (kudos to whomever designed the level/soundtrack). I have had the game since its original release date but I have to turn off the wireless and avoid the patch, hence I cannot enjoy on-line play.
THE PATCH SHOULD BE OPTIONAL!!!!!!!
This message has nothing to do with religious intolerance. The most intolerant people ARE the religious and I, thankfully, am an Atheist. I can get along with everybody!
This game is very artistic and Art should never have to be scrutinized by religious standards, neither should music, which is also Art! Maybe I can finally get stupidity banned if I started a religion, in where, ’stupidity’ was the only sin. Anyone want to join ‘The Church of Common Sense’?

muslims just moan moan moan, everything is offensive to them, i mean are they ashamed of the writings in the quran or something? lol its like christians protesting by having a crucifix or church in a game, ridiculous. And anyway, isnt it against your islamic and sharia customs to be playing games in the first place? hypocrits. I’m sure under sharia law and islam that objects that resemble live entities, i.e statues, plush toys is against your religion. But as per usual we have to succumb to their every requests because then we get branded as not being politically correct or get accused of being racsist. tsk tsk! do christians complain about “oh my god” in films and games, we can have games about ww2 but lol can you imagine one about the gulf war in such obvious detail, true, cod4 has sections loosley based on middle eastern war but with fictional characters, but oh no we must not upset the muslims, we are second class citizens remember.
