One of our readers got in touch pointing us to his blog, The Clockwork Manual, and a piece he’s written on LittleBigPlanet. We of course love LBP here at Three Speech and are counting the days until its release, so all comments/opinions/views on it are more than welcome. Here’s the first few paragraphs of the piece and if you want to read more click through to the rest of his article. Also, if any other readers are running blogs that you think we may be interested in get in touch here. So, on with the program…
LittleBigPlanet: It Will Not Be Stopped
Spore was interesting to me. Not because of the revolutionary methods of animation or the insane scope of what Will Wright was trying to achieve, but because it was one of the first games ever to give simple game design controls to the masses, stand back, and say “Show me.”
Admittedly it’s a bit of a stretch calling those tools ‘game design tools’ but it’s a fair observation to make; after all is making character, vehicle and environmental models not an essential part of any game’s development? Within a short time of the mere Creature Creator going up for download the Sporepedia (the EA created encyclopedia for housing Spore’s creations) was flooded with user-generated content - more than any other game in history - with many creatures that were, for want of a better word, brilliant. On that note, let’s move on to Little Big Planet.
The Clockwork Manual’s logo at the top of the linked page looks like the victims in the “The Empty Child” episode of “Doctor Who”!
Apart from this, there is a “LBP Beta thoughts and impressions thread” running on the Official PlayStation Community (PlayStation.com) English Forums…

Have a sneaky sketchy suspicion that LittleBigPlanet will be the “next” big thing
Comment by JohnSketch — Oct 2, 2008 @ 1:19 pm
I hope it is, John.
Because if it flops into obscurity, and Sony have placed so much hope in the title, it will be a field day/month/year (delete as applicable) for the other console owners.
PS. The game scored (a totally unexpected) 10 out of 10 in the review within the current “PlayStation Official Magazine - UK”… the one that asked for my subscription details online then plopped out “Oops, something went wrong. Don’t worry though, someone in the technical support team has already been alerted to this error and will be looking into it shortly.” almost two hours ago without any word from anybody in the support team, or otherwise.
PPS.
Play{dot}com have a listing for “Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists Of Plastic” being released on 28 November 2008 (at £39.99… Yee-Ouch!):

So there’s hope for LittleBigPlanet to be available as a downloadable title in the future (the converse of what was expected of the other Media Molecule title).
PPPPPPPPPPPPS3. I spotted the box for “LittleBigPlanet” in a GAME store this morning.
It apparently needs a mandatory 4Gb of space before SackBoy can do his magic.

…Whether install will be mandatory is unknown, but Smith simply said: “The HD install is perhaps around a gig. Perhaps more or less.” LBP will run at “30fps at 720. The game uses a lot of filmic techniques like depth of field and motion blur, so this fits the game pretty well.” There will be “VOIP and PS Eye support” but no further details are revealed.

Hmmm… I wonder if I saw a ‘Beta’ version of the box or the requirements have changed?

Update:
I revisited the same GAME store this morning & re-asked the same sales representative I spoke to yesterday regarding the reverse of the “LittleBigPlanet” box & the hard drive requirements.
Different answer today… 4Mb minimum required.
Phew!
PS. I have just received an e-mail from Sony Computer Entertainment Japan to invite me to the Beta of “RITORUBIGGUPURANETTO “!

Non-Sony characters lined up for future DLC
The latest issue of US games mag EGM claims that characters from third-party games and Disney characters are to appear in LittleBigPlanet DLC.
According to the rumour, non-Sony properties are lined up to be added to the game as post-release downloadables.
None of this is official, but with Sony having already revealed Nariko (Heavenly Sword) and Kratos (God of War) Sackboys as downloadable characters, there’s plenty of scope for variations of the little cloth character to appear.
We’re currently awaiting a (no) comment from Sony UK.

I know it is an (early) Beta build, but with over 4Gb of free space on my hard drive, my 6 year old has spent a few hours interacting with the “LittleBigPlanet” (Beta) Tutorial, and created his own level.
After saving it to his “My Levels” area, returning to the “Pod”, and then attempting to exit the game, he was prompted with:
“Your profile cannot be saved because it is too large. Try deleting unwanted items from My Pictures, My Objects, My Costumes, or My Levels.”
HmmmMm…
