A bumper crop of cool games are being released for the PS3 in the next month or so, and Three Speech has been busy checking them out for you. Here are just a few to wet your whistle.
RESISTANCE 2
The sequel to the PS3’s launch FPS sees you fighting the Chimera in the US of A. It’s looking mighty impressive, too. Where the first game had you engaged in street fights in the narrow streets of Blighty, the sheer size of America’s mid-west landscape means the battlegrounds are massive. There are also more enemies on screen, and a greater variety, including awesome bosses. You’ll also be able to play a parallel story cooperatively with two players locally or up to eight online. It’s out 28 November.
BIOSHOCK
It’s been a long time coming, but it’s looking like it was worth the wait. A truly original and immersive FPS that blew Xbox gamers’ socks off, now PS3 fans can look forward to the best version yet. The underwater city of Rapture has never looked so beautiful - you’ll spend hours just wandering around looking at the water effects. As well as ramping up the visual look for the PS3, makers 2K also promise a whole heap of exclusive PS3 content. Out 17 October.
DEAD SPACE
Alien meets Resident Evil in this atmospheric space-based third-person survival horror.
You have to investigate a creepy abandoned space ship, finding clues to unravel the mystery of what happened to the crew while staying alive. The game makes great use of darkness and strobing lights in an atmospheric setting. Tentacled aliens jump out of dingy heavy metal corridors, dismembered bodies drop unexpectedly from ceilings and blood-curdling screams echo round the ship’s cavernous interior. Out 24 October.
FALLOUT 3
Hundreds of hours of gameplay time are promised with this post-apocalyptic, free-roaming RPG from the makers of Oblivion. You play as a completely customisable character and your playground is a huge and ravaged post-nuke wasteland of bombed out buildings and radioactive rivers, populated by plenty of NPCs and mutated monsters. The game is mission-based with plenty of side quests and allows for any moral choices and outcomes. The animation, physics and AI is all looking superb, and the 1950s nuclear-age stylings are very cool. It’s out on 31 October. Watch out for a full hands-on preview nearer the time.
TOMB RAIDER UNDERWORLD
Developers Crystal Dynamics have breathed new life into Ms Croft for this stunning-looking new adventure. Learning some lessons from Uncharted, it seems, Lara’s movements are motion captured to be more fluid and realistic. The way she interacts with her environment, brushing aside jungle leaves and shimmying up cliffs, and gets dirty the more she rolls around in mud, means that Lara has never looked better. It’s out 21st November. Check back in a couple of weeks for a full hands-on preview.
MOTORSTORM PACIFIC RIFT
This time the off-road action moves to a Pacific island, with the terrain and environmental hazards that come with it, including an active volcano. Driving over lava heats your vehicle up, providing extra boost but meaning you have to go through car washes to extinguish the flames. It’s looking as adrenaline-fuelled and pacey as the first, with a few nice new touches like your ride shaking when you use too much boost, and this time there’s also monster trucks. Out 14 November.
WWE SMACKDOWN VS RAW 2009
This is looking an absolute belter of a wrestling game this year, with massively improved graphics, AI, hit-detection and animation. You can play as any WWE Superstar or diva in career and exhibition and Road To Wrestlemania modes, or create your own wrestler down to the finest detail. The depth and variety of moves you can string together is incredible, and you can even create your own elaborate finishing move. With loads of different match types it promises to be wicked online, too. Out 7 November.
LITTLE BIG PLANET
Not so much a game as a way of life. Or a hobby. Or a social networking tool. Whatever, at its core LBP is a platformer, but everything about it is customisable from your character Sackboy to the levels themselves, the look of the game and how you play it.. Collect materials to constantly change your game, build levels and share them with others on the PSN. The way you can work cooperatively with others online to solve its levels means this is looking like the most innovative game ever and, in theory, one you need never stop playing. Out 24 October.
QUANTUM OF SOLACE
Looking like the best Bond game since GoldenEye and developed by Treyarch (Call Of Duty), who know a thing or two about FPS’s. Fast moving, exciting levels based on scenes from both Quantum and Casino Royale promise a great single player game, though online multiplayer will be where it really comes into its own. Sadly at this stage nothing was available to see online, but fingers crossed it’s as good a multiplayer as GoldenEye. Out 31 October.
SILENT HILL HOMECOMING
All the best moments from the scary survival horror game series, which first scared our pants off on the PSOne ten years ago, are here: the eerie warning sirens, the large-breasted faceless knife-wielding nurses, the constantly interchanging realities and overall sense of creeping weirdness. It’s not the most free-roaming of games - doors are inexplicably locked, roads torn up and impassable - but the storyline is great and the atmosphere scary as hell. Beautiful to look at, too. Out November.
MOTO GP 08
The most realistic motorbike racer yet, with beautiful graphics and a following camera that really will put your heart in your mouth as you take those corners at speed. All teams and bikes will be present and correct, along with a good number of real-world circuits. You can vary the realism of the bikes’ handling, too, so if you like a challenge it’s there to be had. Probably the best moto-racer since Super Hang-On hit the arcades years ago. Out late October.

If you havn’t tried the BioShock demo yet, GET IT NOW! It’s good.

LBP is more addictive than the crack!! god help me when the full game drops in a few weeks…
also, it is compatible with the old EyeToy camera so no need to rush out and buy a new one
looking forwards to Fallout3 too, that’s about it.

I tried the full Bioshock game when it came out for Xbox 360 all those months ago. It’s good in the middle, but the start and end are pretty boring. It also looks and runs much better on Xbox 360.
It’s just unfortunate there can’t be more games like DiRT which do the PS3 hardware a good service.
Comment by Neil — Oct 7, 2008 @ 6:55 pm
Is there a more specific date for Silent Hill?
I have an order placed with an import place but they’re taking their pretty time sending it and if they dilly dally for much longer I may just wait for a native version.
Comment by Philip — Oct 7, 2008 @ 8:14 pm
Good times. Now we just need that backwards compatibility for PS2 titles so the PS3 feels even less like a brick and we can get rid of the old machines.
Resistance 2, Motorstorm and LBP should be good times.

How do you know “BioShock” plays better on the Xbox 360 if we’ve only seen the start of it so far?
Any yes, as I mentioned last night (see below; taken from the most recent blog entry relating to “Mirror’s Edge”), I think it’s (visually) boring at the beginning.

I heard so many great things about “BioShock”, and not having experienced the game before I was eager to download it when the demo turned up on the ‘Store.
And that’s where the excitement stopped.
I was really disappointed with the rendering of the waves & the flames at the start of the demo, and although we haven’t (OK, one of my kids hasn’t) got very far into it, I’m not in a great hurry to return.
I will give it some more time, first-hand this time, even as early as this evening, but unless the demo gets a lot better, and in a short space of time, I really don’t see what the attraction is, regardless of duration of typical game-play.
Also, a few weeks ago I gave in to suggestion & bought “Metal Gear Solid IV: Guns of the Patriots”. At £25 it was still a tough decision, but I thought I could at least recoup my outlay if it didn’t live up to what I’d heard about it.
But I’m sorry… I must be having an ‘off’ month. I watched as the same loin-fruit who played “BioShock” advanced through about 3 hours of this game [although it’s hard to say if that’s everybody else’s 3 hours, or not], but still considered it to be a completed anti-climax & wasted opportunity.
I am as keen as the next person to see the progression of video games into cinematic presentations with dynamic interaction (“Heavy Rain”, perhaps?), but the Metal Gear storyline & underlying universe just bored me silly.
After many months of reading how everybody was enjoying “the old Snake” & “the best Metal Gear ever”, and even the sales assistant at W.M Morrison who found the disc in their “CD & Games” drawer told me how good the game was, I didn’t even feel the need to ask to take the controller in the three hour period, just to “have a go”. Not once. A very bad sign.
And this was in advance of the “LittleBigPlanet” Trial taking over our PS3-life for the last couple of weeks, so I didn’t even have the excuse of playing something (much, much) better.
Perhaps I’m just getting old, or perhaps I’m just getting more demanding with my gaming expectations.
I’m not sure whether to look forward to “Dead Space” or just skip it completely as another space-themed alien bloodiest. A playable demo would be useful, but I suspect we’ll not see this due to certification issues. “Saints Row 2” is just going to be “Grand Theft Auto IV” with taking itself seriously.
Yes, there’s “Far Cry 2”, “Midnight Club: Los Angeles”, “Spider-man: Web of Shadows” [the one in which the hope of goodness still remains], “Quantum of Solace”, “Fallout 3”, “SOCOM: (U.S. Navy Seals) Confrontation”, “Silent Hill: Homecoming” [poor reviews, so far], “Siren: Blood Curse” (on Blu-ray), “Tomb Raider: Underworld”, and “Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe” [why?} all due before Faith takes a run & jumps into our consciousness, but an underwhelming experience in “Mirror’s Edge”, and I may as well give up until “Resistance 2” & “Resident Evil 5” are available.
Does anybody else have any “must buy” / “must play” titles coming up? Or is the second anniversary of the PS3 console going to be met with a case of apathy birthday?
PS. “Linger In Shadows” on the UK ‘Store, and “Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars” on the US ‘Store this week.
Must go… more “LittleBigPlanet” to play

Back to selling a chunk of my liver it seems….
Comment by JohnSketch — Oct 7, 2008 @ 10:22 pm
I played the Bioshock demo and thought it was very average. It looks and plays like a 90s FPS, and graphically is very poor in places. When you’re heading down to the bathesphere, there are some textures on display that would look poor in a PS2 game.
As for the gameplay - very average. Even the story didn’t grab me. With the body mods and hacking of bots, it reminded me a lot of Deus Ex - only nowhere near as good.
I’m glad I downloaded the demo for the simple reason that it’s stopped me shelling out 40 notes on the full game. I was dubious about Bioshock when it was originally announced for PS3 ages ago, before becoming a 360 exclusive. It got a lot of hype, but I’m now wondering how much of that was generated by 360 fans crowing about it simply because it wasn’t on PS3.
I have a list of 10 games released before the end of this year that I want, and Bioshock is not on that list. There are better games already out, and far better games to come.

Fanpages ( @3 ), were you a fan of the previous Metal Gear Solid games by any chance? or was MGS4 your first one?
Not sure how your play/watch session was like, but I found that you can basically run and gun through MGS4 without caring what you do and you get pretty far pretty quick and it’s a very ordinary game… or you can play it as a Metal Gear game and go slow, sneak around and not get seen, experiment with different things, have fun codec chats, soak in the atmosphere and discover all the hidden stuff.. and play through a beautiful game that wraps up the series really well.
Maybe the level of enjoyment in MGS4 depends on your attachment to the previous games?
(oh, and as for Bioshock - I’ll finish downloading the demo tonight and have a go)

Bioshocks not a bad game, its a pretty solid purchase in its own right but it does leave you “wanting” at the end.
Never truelly feels like you have fulfilled anything nor do you feel any sense of achievement from getting there.
But as a stock shooter with a story it does what it says on the tin - can’t complain about that.
Comment by JohnSketch — Oct 8, 2008 @ 1:34 am
@10 [Rick]:
No, I wasn’t a fan of the earlier titles in the franchise, hence why I mentioned I had an open mind with playing the latest instalment.
My son is a huge first person shooter fan, and he doesn’t go in “all guns blazing”, but did the sneaking about as expected.
I don’t recall if he turned up anything ‘hidden’ (is this mentioned on-screen?), but yes, you’re right, I think if I had been bothered with the earlier titles, then this game may have made a) more sense, and b) me want to play it.
What did you think of “BioShock”, btw?
@12 [JohnSketch]:
I will get back to this & play through further or, indeed, from the beginning of the demo (first-hand). I think I like the idea of the ‘adventure’ story line from what I’ve seen, as I haven’t heard anything else about what to expect other than “it’s a great shooter”, and that’s the only thing keeping me interested.
A bit like “…Guns of the Patriots”; if the story is a compelling enough reason to stay with it, then the graphical representation doesn’t matter.
PS. “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” for £22.99 anyone?

It get worse, I need to spend hundreds on my list!!!
Preordered
LittleBigPlanet - Come on, this needs no reason. It’s LBP and is amazing.
Shaun Whites Snowboarding - Good to have something different and it looks gorgeous.
SOCOM - For the Headset mainly, although I enjoyed the Beta. Play has it for £29.99 which is why I’ve pre-ordered.
Definite
Farcry 2 - Looks like my kind of shooter, and loved FC Instincts until the mutants turned up!
Fallout 3 - Big Oblivion fan and a similar game in post apocalyptic world sounds like it could be my fave game ever.
Resident Evil 5 - Just think from the vids I’ve seen this is looking great.
Operation Flashpoint 2 - My all time fave PC game was OP1 so even though this has new developers, still think it’ll be the nuts.
Likely
Dead Space - Looking really good, might get after finishing above lot.
Mirror’s Edge - Ditto.
Killzone 2 - Waiting for reviews but think it’ll be a cert.
Undecided
COD: WaW - Loved COD4 but get bored after playing it for months on end, every night. Think this looks good so might still get it.
Valkyria Chronicles - Looks very good, love the graphical style but heard it wasn’t massive in Japan so will wait for reviews.
No Interest
BioShock - Demo put me off, might rent it next year after played all above.
Any Lego game - Hated Starwars, know I’ll hate all others too.
Quantum of Solace - Bound to be poo.
Guitar Hero 4 - Just not into rythm games.
Tomb Raider - Lara must be too old for leaping about now surely?
Alone in the Dark - Not grabbed my attention.
Silent Hill 5 - Same a AITD.
Resistance 2 - Enjoyed 1 but hated multiplayer. Think I’ll rent it actually.
Would Cross The Road To Avoid
Saints Row 2 - Stupid looking GTA clone.
Motorstorm 2 - Really didn’t like the 1st one so won’t like this either.
Need for Speed - Hmmm, nah not my cup of tea. I’ll stick to Burnout.

As for Bioshock… the shock is how average it is. Thanks for the demo, I won’t be buying!
The LBP beta is amazing, but produces a big worry: It is a time killer. There’ll be no point buying anything else, there’ll be no time to play anything else.
Except Warhawk, obviously.
Comment by nemo — Oct 8, 2008 @ 11:38 am
Bioshock wasn’t such the shock that I thought it should be either. Firstly it’s a little “been there done that” sort of story and mechanics, and then the controls don’t allow for leftie thumbs. The Unreal peeps should release a wee patch that allows the user to flip the controls on an Unreal game! Anyway. I’m waiting for MirrorsEdge, Killzone2, Resistance2, GranTurismo5, an SSX if there is one (oh yes please), LBP, TombRaider, and oh the list goes on.
I’m still enjoying Warhawk (my fav), Burnout (my second fav), GT5p (getting bored of the sameness now though), and Wipeout (my third fav, not cos it’s not as good, but because I’m not as good as I need to be! Must practice more!)
Comment by LordOfRuin — Oct 8, 2008 @ 12:21 pm
Can someone from TS or anyone else for that matter confirm if BioShock will support native( not scaled ) 1080p? I thought the demo was supposed to support 1080p, but I can’t work out how to check what resolution a game is actually running at. If someone can tell me I would be grateful.
PS. More native 1080p games please. After all this is supposed to be the age of HD gaming, so it should be Full HD gaming.

To be honest the Bioshock demo was poor, the 360 version looks quite a bit better… Graphics seems to look softer on the PS3, also there was some bad textures in the Ps3 demo that are going to fixed for retail, the devs said ….
(can’t be arsed to find link)
Was going to rent the Ps3 version, but will not bother now… Always have the 360 version if I want to visit Rapture…
I have pre-ordered LBP (Play.com with Nariko sackgirl), Resistance 2 (narked no SE for UK), going to rent Silent Hill and Mirrors Edge for Ps3, (prob buy Mirrors Edge if its as good as I think it should be)
Pre-ordered Far-Cry 2 & Fallout 3 for 360, and going to rent Dead Space, Tomb Raider (playing through aniversary at the mo…), Quantum for 360…
Linger in Shadows out tomorrow - BOUGHT!!

@ Mr. Monkey,
Cool, I’ll keep an eye out for that one then.
Another thing people may be interested in is that PLAY.com are now taking pre-orders for SOCOM which is bundled with the rather sexy looking official PS3 BT Headset for only £29.99, £10 off rrp. I’ve ordered mine, mainly for the headset but the game is very good too, when working! (I’m in the beta btw)
Also, tried to give Bioshock another chance last night and played the demo through to completion. I’m sorry to report that I just didn’t enjoy it one bit so it’s definately not going on my wish list.

Must admit that I enjoyed the Bioshock demo, never having seen the 360 version. I will definitely be getting it. Will have to get LBP too - that is a given. The other game that I am keen on getting before Christmas is EndWar, though haven’t really seen any indepth previews yet.
Comment by MuggleMind — Oct 9, 2008 @ 10:29 am
Bioshock is just another one of those overhyped games. Where’s the hook in the game? Twitchy controls, gameplay isn’t enjoyable.
Graphically looks good, atmosphere is good, but otherwise, pretty much the average story.
Plus I got the ending spoiled by some stupid forum… lol
Comment by Threespeechlover — Oct 9, 2008 @ 1:26 pm
You should correct what you claim about Bioshock. The PS3 version is worth then the XBox version. Antialising sucks big time and the image looks blured if compared with the XBox version. 2k lied about the port. There are even textures on the Bid Daddy that look like PS1 textures.
Comment by Torpedo — Oct 9, 2008 @ 5:41 pm
“worse” nor “worth” on the previous post
Comment by Torpedo — Oct 9, 2008 @ 5:42 pm
even if the graphics were killzone 2-like, the gameplay still sucks, the character doesn’t seem to have any presence in the environment, just seems to be gliding around in space.
I guess I’m not used to playing those kinds of shooters, much prefer the cinematic experiences like COD 4 etc.
Comment by ThreeSpeechlover — Oct 9, 2008 @ 9:31 pm
I played a few hours of Bioshock on the 360 a while back and was looking forward to it finally getting released on PS3.
I played the demo and don’t think its long enough to really see the games true strong points, the fallen utopia of Rapture storyline and its eerie settings don’t really get a chance to shine and the intense combat with the Big Daddys later in the game (who are the real stars of the show IMO) is understandably missing.
I was going to buy this but the port looks sub-par and after seeing those PS1 textures on the big daddy (and remembering the motorstorm 2 demo) I sought to see if the demo was an old build or not. This led me to the 2k forums where there was quite a few people raising the issue, after reading the thread I was disheartened to say the least that the demo is from the final build and that the textures couldn’t be improved by patch, theres even an admission from the 2k dev team that those textures shouldn’t have passed the QA process.
So though I’d still like to play this through to its conclusion having been stung by the poor Orange Box port I won’t be picking it up at release like I had planned and shall wait for its inevitable plummet to the bargain bins. There are too many games that I do want over the next few weeks that I hope have had a better ride through the QA process.
I’m really looking forward to Dead Space and the more I see of it the more it looks like its going to be great. I’m a huge fan of the RE series and Event Horizon is one of my favourite films so the combination of the looks intense. All the p/reviews are positive so I shall pick this up day 1.
Though people moan there are too many FPS games around I’m also planning to buy Far Cry 2 due to its amazing map editor for some multiplayer shenanigans though I’m cautious of its port to PS so will wait to see abit more of it in action.
LittleBigPlanet is a must, though I’ve not really had time to create much of my own during the beta I have had a brilliant time running through other peoples levels. Sticking my face everywhere has also made me feel much better about my PSeye.
With Pro Evo 2009 to feed the addiction and as a fan of the rest of the series Midnight Club:Los Angeles to be looked at the next 2 weeks are potentially going to be very expensive. Glad the winters coming and nights in are a more attractive proposition.
Comment by marvzilla — Oct 10, 2008 @ 9:56 am
Beyond those 2 weeks I’m also definately picking up Resistance 2 (though the delay of the European release is somewhat annoying) for some more Chimera bashing.
I’m also interested in seeing more of Mirrors Edge as it looks pretty sweet and Shaun Whites Snowboarding could fill the SSX gap, Prince of Persia and Tombraider could potentially be very good . Next year I shall definately be getting Resident Evil 5, Streetfighter 4 and Killzone 2 looks stunning from what I’ve seen.
The future looks good, just got to work out how to find the cash/time to get it all in.
Comment by marvzilla — Oct 10, 2008 @ 10:27 am
Actually, it’s been pointed out that people are over reacting about the Bioshock port stuff, and from the screenshot comparisons I’ve seen I have to agree that it seems to be xbox people blowing it out of proportion again.
Read Below:
When an idea has been circulating in a mass populace for an extended period of time, even when that idea is based on fact, it can negatively affect future events. Translation: just because 360-to-PS3 ports have looked like hell in the past doesn’t mean this will always be the case. In fact, it may never again be the case, what with more third-party devs using the PS3 as the lead console in multiplatform titles and all devs becoming much more familiar with the PS3’s hardware.
Over the past week, you may have heard complaints - typically blown out of proportion - regarding the PS3 version of Bioshock, and how it supposedly looks inferior to the Xbox 360 version. A few compare-and-contrast pics went up, and ever since then, the comments have spread like wildfire: 2K screwed up; it’s another inferior port. Yes, well, read the first paragraph. According to Ripten, 2K Community Manager Elizabeth Tobey responded to the mess, and it’s quite lengthy. Here’s a snippet of it, though-
“Many of you wondered about BioShock’s graphical performance on the PS3, and whether it was comparable to the 360 version. The team wanted BioShock to be the same experience on the PS3 as on the 360. Of course, the PS3 is a very different machine to code a game on, and so the team used a combination of optimization and filtering to maximize the overall visual experience of the game. These optimizations improved frame rate and added the slight “blur filter” that some of you have pointed out in comparison screenshots. This solution offered the best performance benefit with minimum visual cost or change from the 360 version.”
Next, what you’ll want to do is check all the screenshot comparisons she provided and see the differences for yourself. They’re there, but the explanation goes on for a while, and it’s not something we’re going to freak out about. We’ve experienced many piss-poor ports in the past, but we seriously doubt Bioshock is one of them, and based on this screen analysis, people really have been overreacting.
Screenshots: http://www.ripten.com/2008/10/08/2k-responds-again-to-ps3-bioshock-complaints/
Basically, it’s similar to GTA4, xbox was clearer/colder & PS3 blurry/warmer. It’s horses for courses really, some prefer 1 style and some the other.
I’m not interested in this game because of the supernatural type stuff, so couldn’t care less really but think people should see for themselves rather than take some fanboys word for it that the game is inferior.

Continuing the graphical presentation that puts the ‘Shock’ into the ‘Bio’ title, here is the start of a message posted to the official 2K Games forum from “2K Elizabeth” (2K Community Manager):

A message from the team about the visuals in BioShock PS3 (UPDATED on October 14th)
Hey guys,
I have good news from the dev team about a patch for BioShock PS3! They have been working on a patch to address the concerns some of you on the forum have talked about. As work is in progress I do not have a definite date for when this patch will be released as it needs to be tested and clear certification with Sony before it is scheduled and released. I do know this will not be until after the game’s launch, and I will update you with details on that date as I receive them.
I’ll be releasing the entire patch list when it’s all finalized, but for now I’m sure you’ll be happy to see that these two fixes are included:
Big Daddy Bouncer and Elite Bouncer Textures Appeared Pixelated
Fix for an issue where large blocky pixels would show up whenever viewing the Bouncer and Elite Bouncer variants of the Big Daddy.
White Bars
Fix for an issue where white/discolored bars would show up at the right and bottom sides of the screen during the plane crash / water scene at the beginning of the game.
I’m sure many of you are eager to see what Big Daddy looks like after this fix, so here are two screenshots of him in his patched glory!

Took me a while to actually install and play the BioShock demo (too busy playing WipEout HD and Suikoden 1 (no, it’s not on the Store, I just used a PS1 disc).
Anyway, I enjoyed it, but I’m not an FPS person and didn’t feel at all inclined to buy it. I’ve played a tiny bit of BioShock on the 360 and had pretty much the same reaction - “interesting, but not my thing”. I quite enjoyed the general atmosphere of the game… the visual design, the sounds are great, it was nice to see something that wasn’t another World War or Middle East based infantry style game.
I was a bit let down by the main guy not commenting at all about his first Plasmid. That was a pretty freakin’ huge needle to just casually shove into your arm just because a guy you just met on the radio tells you to do it. The convulsing afterwards was good, and obviously so traumatic that the player tries to end it all by jumping off the high platform and gets knocked out… …so then why when you wake up again do you just suddenly become a master of using the electro bolt and never go “holy &^%$ what just happened to my arm?!”
