Right, you’ve had a few days to acclimatise yourselves with the new WipEout HD, so using that lovely in-game screenshot feature we want you to take images and send us your favourite one to the Three Speech email. We will then pick the best, post them on-site and get you all to decide the winner. The chosen one will then receive a little something from the store cupboards.
When writing in tell us your username, top placing online to date and finally, where you are from.
Get snapping!
Is the “little something” worth more than the GBP 11.99 I would have to spend to download the title first?
And/or is the prize a CD to play before the intermittent fault (with the pausing of the audio with the in-game soundtrack loops back to the beginning) is patched?
I was considering this title, but the number of times Three Speech visitors have commented on how annoying this fault is has put me off something more than a “little”.
I’m ready to review everybody else’s in-flight movies though

fp.

I’ve had no issues with the game since picking it up last week, had several long sessions with my mates and I must say THUMBS UP all around!
60fps, no screen tearing and no lag online.
Poifect!
Comment by SlapnutzUK — Sep 30, 2008 @ 11:50 am
I agree, I’ve been playing wipeout HD non-stop and having found any issues with it and the no-lag while online play is amazing I was taking it as standard that there would be some but none, brilliant!

#2 As requested due to Moderation in “Current TV Competition - £1,000 Bonanza!” blog entry…
How about a “Tokyo Game Show” blog entry, Three Speech…?
FYI: “Ratchet & Clank missions secret Marcell * Ignition!” for the PSP at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show (9 to 12 October 2008)…
(I wonder if that is a poor translation of “Secret Agent Clank” or a new title?)
[ http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.jp.playstation.com%2Finfo%2Frelease%2Fnr_20080930_tgs2008.html&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&sl=ja&tl=en ]
However, “Supernova Lumines” (PSN) gets an outing, as does “Sonic World Adventure”. If anybody still cares, “Home” (or the latest pre-beta build) is also being presented.
Of note, though, is that also at the Show for the PS3…
“More unreleased title…
(AIREMUSOFUTOUEAENJINIARINGU Corporation / 1 title)
(Konami Digital Entertainment / 1 title)
(Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. / 9 Titles)”
and for the PSP:
“More unreleased titles… (Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. / 3 Titles)”
I wonder if the titles could include “Gravitationally Challenged Damsel in De-large-dress” aka “Fat Princess” [PSN], “Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic” [PSN], more visuals for “Heavy Rain” (aka “Don’t Save Your Game”), or “Resistance: Retribution” [PSP].
Or maybe even the not-so-secret “Metal Gear Solid Existence”?

Dropped my imported DS3 the otherday and the R2 button has broke, its very loose…
Remapped the air brake to L1 + R1 but its not the same…
So I have not played any online so far, still working thro single-player…
Soon as my new controller arrives in the post, will give online a whirl…
Will send some pics in then too…

I’ve only had one issue with WipeoutHD, and it’s that I’m struggling on some of the tracks. Ha ha! It’s ace.

@5 [Mr M.]:
I believe the DUALSHOCK 3 was finally released in the UK. You could always go to, I don’t know, “a shop” & buy one!
SIXAXIS controllers are very reasonably priced now too.
Any excuse not to go first with the screen images!
Sorry to read of your loss, in any respect.
Perhaps a “BenHeck(endorn)” one-handed controller is what you need?

Did anybody experience the issue with online play when the “WipEout HD” team wrapped-up developed before firmware 2.40 arrived (and increased the “Friends” list to double the previous capacity to now a maximum of 100 entries)?
Hopefully by the end of this week everybody else will have tested this title properly & I can consider buying it

I belatedly thought that about Team ICO after I typed my message, marvzilla.
You can send me a “Request to Add a Friend” if you wish.
Who knows… it may make your “WipEout HD” online play look good if you invite me to a race!
Seriously, though, check out the “WipEout HD - your thoughts so far?” blog entry for many comments from parties with “skipping” soundtracks.

wipeout hd is awesome! ive have no problems so far. it took ages to come out… but the final game is perfect, the 1080p graphics are amazing! lovin the zone levels. great value for such good game, best thing to hit the psn so far!
Comment by mark — Sep 30, 2008 @ 1:33 pm
There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe this game accurately. Every time I load it up my jaw drops at the beauty of it all. Then it closes up again and my teeth clench as I am deeply immersed in the astoundingly fast racing action.
My only complaint is that half the trophies are well out of my reach. 75 on Zone? WTF?! I can’t get past 25!

Maintaining 1080p and 60fps is no easy feat. In fact, many games in this generation can barely pump out 720p graphics, as seen by upscaling tricks used by titles like Haze, Halo 3 and Grand Theft Auto IV. However, WipEout HD is one of the few games that maintains 1080p at a silky smooth 60fps. How were they able to do that?
Inside the Digital Foundry once again examined the pure pixel count of WipEout HD. What they found is interesting. The game does, for the most part, run in full 1080p. However, when the action becomes too intense, the game will downscale the resolution. It appears the PS3 figures out exactly what resolution the game needs to run at frame-by-frame to ensure the game’s 60fps count is never broken. “Rather than introduce dropped frames, slow down or other unsavoury effects, the number of pixels being rendered drops and the PS3’s horizontal hardware scaler is invoked to make up the difference. It’s an intriguing solution that works with limited impact on the overall look of the game”
It appears the lowest resolution WipEout can render in is 1280×1080, which is still a 50% increase over 720p. The end result is something gamers, regardless of their AV tech knowledge, can truly appreciate.

@Mr Monkey
thanks for posting that link to coldstorage! so many memories wrapped up in those tracks, I am downloading as I type and cant wait to add the playlist to HD…must check out the other link also.
@Stingo
you mentioned in a previous thread about alternative HUD’s. I’m sure most people already know this by now but i unlocked some alt HUD’s last night while playing the campaign mode. So far I have wip3out and wipeout 2097 HUD’s…
check your options menu, you might already have them…
Comment by xMonkeyWrenchx — Sep 30, 2008 @ 2:20 pm
@xMonkeyWrenchx,
Those are the only two alt-HUDs in the game. But try winning a race while using each of them…

yeah cheers for the email about coldstorage.
@ xMonkeyWrenchx
i take it your skills have come back then?
one thing the game is missing though is the speed start you used to get when pressing the throttle exactly 1 second before the green light.
i already have a couple of great pics that i will be sending tomoz. i have never won anything on this site,, or any site for that matter so make it happen threespeech, make a dream come true.

oh yes! the practise paid off…I eventually realised my problem. Having played Motorstorm for so long with my thumb permanently glued to the X button, I forgot that you actually need to think about the corners and track layouts in Wipeout!! I now rule chengou project and have won numerous races online, not to mention the collection of campaign golds and obscure PSN trophies!!
BTW, whats your PSN?
mines xMonkeyWrenchx, feel free to add me…
Comment by xMonkeyWrenchx — Sep 30, 2008 @ 3:43 pm
@manley
you can still get the speed start! I think you have to hit X on go, instead of one second before? I find it best to hit X in time with the countdown, i.e. 3…2…1 using the big red moving bar at the start line as a guide…
Comment by xMonkeyWrenchx — Sep 30, 2008 @ 3:46 pm
@xMonkeyWrenchx
my psn is turnget2005 thats the one thats currently in first or the top ten of most speed lap records on most tracks in phantom !
some of the trophies are incredibly hard to achieve like gold on all events on elite. is it me or are the earier timetrail events in harder on venom than the phantom ones?
Comment by manley — Sep 30, 2008 @ 3:50 pm
@manley
yeah, i saw one trophy that required you to complete 90 laps in one race in racebox! I think i’ll save that for an all-nighter some day…although if you think about it 90 laps is only about 40mins continuous play…
ive noticed that the races are much more intuitive at the higher speed classes. If you go back to the early time trials you look like an idiot cos you over anticipate all the corners!!!
i’ll look out for you in the leaderboards ;-]

It seems the audio skipping is related to folks using upgraded HDD’s, and specifically Samsung drives 250GB and higher. Mine is a Samsung spinpoint 320GB.
http://community.eu.playstation.com/playstationeu/board/message?board.id=b_EN_G_Driving_wipeout&message.id=715
I’ve noticed another bug, and some of my PSN friends have also confirmed this. Hi scores etc aren’t updating to the leaderboards. The last hi score/times of mine were from last Friday. I’ve since thrashed all those and now notice my personal records aren’t being transferred to the global scores or the friends scores.
But otherwise i’ve been playing this every spare moment! Online play is incredibly good as there seems to be no lag at all! its like playing over a LAN! Shame about the niggles, but this game is incredible.

Comment by elephant_stone — Oct 1, 2008 @ 6:04 pm
@30 [elephant_stone]:
Or the not-so-clever geeks way of demonstrating that inadequate testing was undertaken.
Given the length of time that this title was in development such a occurrence is shameful!
As I mentioned above (albeit with a ‘typo’), I am guessing that the “WipEout HD” team wrapped-up development before firmware 2.40 arrived (and increased the “Friends” list to double the previous capacity to now a maximum of 100 entries).
It is one of the reasons I am holding back with buying this title… not out of punishment, or to make a point, but just to ensure that everybody else tests any problems for me before I download it
But yes, you are a weirdo!
More than 50 friends… do you know their real names & genders? I suspect not

Although thanks to Mr Monkey the original wipeout sound track also gets played regulary.
Comment by manley — Oct 2, 2008 @ 12:58 pm

I currently have two playlists in the game. The one on the Blog and one called “OldSkool WipEout” which contains all the stuff by CoLD SToRAGE (also thanks to Mr Monkey). I frequently swap between the two. I spent ages last night going thru my music collection to see what else would work well in the game.
I hope other games start to use this feature…theres nothing better than listening to your own tunes in a game. I wonder if it would work in an FPS like UT3 or RFOM??
Comment by xMonkeyWrenchx — Oct 2, 2008 @ 1:50 pm
“PAIN” already adopts a custom playlist feature (outside of the firmware release that allowed this to be the case via the XMB as the development team had already made provision to implement the feature in advance).
However, I like the idea of running through hordes of screaming Chimera enemies with a flame throwing playing the Prodigy’s “Firestarter”.
