PlayTV, Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet were the titles that brought ‘Best of GC’ awards back home for Sony. More info on that here, and click through to read SCEE official press release! What do you guys think? Did the right products win?
Leipzig’s 2008 Games Convention may be over but Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) left the building with three coveted ‘Best of GC’ awards. Having displayed a wealth of innovative games and hardware including PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™), PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable), and PlayStation®2 at the convention, SCEE won awards in three highly competitive categories, carrying off Best PS3 game, Best PSP game and Best Innovation awards. A committee of respected games and entertainment journalists judged the awards, for which more than 120 products were entered in total.
The winning products were:
LittleBigPlanet™– Best PS3 Game
LittleBigPlanet is a game that so defies convention that we’ve given it its own genre: creative gaming. Home to the small but mighty Sackboy, LittleBigPlanet is an irresistible world created by Media Molecule where creativity is part of the gameplay and playing is part of the creative experience. Teeming with places to explore, creative tools to collect and puzzles that baffle, it challenges gamers to make their way through it however they like, modifying and creating elements of their surroundings as they go. Sackboy can design, shape and build both objects and entire levels using his intuitive toolbox of skills and materials – and, when gamers have created a level, they can invite anyone to come and share it via PLAYSTATION®Network. LittleBigPlanet is set to launch on 29th October, 2008 for PAL territories.
What the jury said: “It adds both a social and a creative element to the console world: the gamer community becomes the developer community. LittleBigPlanet comes with a convincingly vivid backdrop and almost unlimited possibilities with entertaining level structure.”
Resistance: Retribution™ – Best PSP game
Set in between Resistance: Fall of Man and the forthcoming Resistance 2, this handheld title follows a lone soldier on a personal vendetta against the deadly Chimera. With new characters, weapons and locations, Resistance: Retribution takes players even deeper into this grim, gripping alternative history of the 20th century. Resistance Retribution will be available for PAL territories in early 2009.
What the jury said: “Neither the small console nor the gamer can take a breather till Europe has been liberated from an extraterrestrial fleet of invaders.”
PlayTV™ – Best Innovation
PlayTV is a digital TV tuner for your PS3 that lets you watch, pause and record live TV from non-subscription channels – even while you’re watching something else or playing a game. Whether you’ve planned a night out or want to watch something on a different channel, you’ll never miss an episode of your favourite TV program ever again. Need to answer the phone? No worries, with PlayTV you can pause live TV. You can also stream your TV content to your PSP at any wi-fi hotspot in the world. It gets even better: you can set up recordings via your PSP when you’re out, meaning that you’ll never miss a programme again. PlayTV will be available in the PAL territories from 19th September onwards.
What the jury said: “The remote function is particularly impressive, making it possible to watch recorded TV shows or live TV programmes on the PSP.”

I love Pete Smith.
Such a great smile.

You know Three Speech, no one is going to be upset or mad if you report the whole story and tell us who the other awards went to. It would be nice to see it here so we don’t have to go digging around other websites to find out!
The others were:
Best PC Game: Spore
Best Xbox 360 Game: Mirror’s Edge
Best Wii Game: Skate It
Best DS Game: Sonic Chronicles
Best Mobile Game: PES 2008
Best Online Game: Warhammer Online: AOR
And relevant to this blog, no award was made for best PS2 game because there weren’t enough to choose from.

funny that all four guys holding the awards are practically wearing the same shirt… i wonder if that was planned?
Comment by benjaminiscool — Sep 3, 2008 @ 4:43 pm
This is a PlayStation blog, why would they report on other platforms? Give me strength.

Hmm. A game with PS3 as lead platform wins best 360 game award. Odd no?
Comment by JESTER2007 — Sep 3, 2008 @ 5:21 pm
@ Neil, thanks for the list I was wondering the other winners myself, and you’re right it would be nice to list the others for completeness!
I’m not sure what games the 360 had on display, but it’s a bit of a poor show that they could only muster up an EA multiplat game as their best on platform, and what’s more a multiplat game with an exclusive Marketing and DLC deal with the PS3!!!

well done Media Molecule. i think LBP should go for game of the year too.
and for PlayTV and SCEE.. “even while you’re watching something else or playing a game” IF the PS3 can do this WHY NOT unlock the in-game music as processing power/harddisc access while a game is running is obviously not an issue. i should imagine that to decode a digital signal, re-encode it to mpeg4 and save it to disc takes just a tad more power than playing an mp3 file while playing a game.
hmmm?
“Neither the console nor the gamer can take a breather till Europe has been liberated from the evil clutches of SCEE management.”

Wow, LBP and RR, nice!!!

LBP true,
Resistance 2 maybe?
no award for home??
Playtv?
a lot of countries require a additional payment to recieve tvchannels,so partly useless
of you have to have very big wallets,
but then again looking at the way SCEE is treating their consumers, they have to have big wallets

These drunk, badly dressed suckers can’t get a game done on time. Why give them an award? Why feature their fat smiles on this propaganda blog? Oh wait…

finally finished my chop’ tonight by topping it off with a 203mm disc system on the rear
bought Heavenly Sword yesterday in a certain video stores 2-4-18 deal, it’s better than i thought it would be, got to the fishy boss woman part, and died. the other game i picked up was Stranglehold, not played it yet.
so, what do you all think is going to be game of the year?? GTA IV, MGS, COD4, soooo much good stuff coming out in the next few months, i don’t know how we’re going to be able to afford it all.

@ Mobiletone
I acquired Heavenly Sword the same way - and died at the same place. Coincidence?!
As for game of the year; it SHOULD be COD4, but will probably be the PS3 flagship, MGS4.

Isn’t “Lemmings” already available for the PSP?
