This new piece of furniture caught our attention here at Three Speech - it’s made from recycled PlayStation 2 consoles and games. We know what we’ll be using for our dining room… What did you think? Let us know on the thread and click through for the official press release.
London-based Pli Design Ltd is launching its latest eco-friendly product, a chair made from 100% recycled games consoles. The launch takes place on Wednesday September 10, 2008 in London, at the HQ of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.
The British manufactured ‘Reee® chair’ has a plastic seat and back made entirely from recycled PlayStation®2 computer games consoles*. Unlike most recycled plastics, which come from a variety of sources, the plastic in the Reee chair is entirely from a single source, making it the first of its kind in the country.
The Reee chair - which is available for the contract, education and domestic markets - was conceived at the annual Eden Project Suppliers conference in Cornwall, where the Pli team discussed the possibilities for reusing high-quality plastic from waste electronics products with other manufacturers, including Sony Computer Entertainment.
Each chair uses 2.4 kg of recycled plastic and the chair parts are designed to be disassembled at the end of their life and recycled again and again. The production of recycled plastic requires a fraction of the energy used for ‘virgin’ plastic that comes straight from the oil barrel. And because the chair is also completely sourced and manufactured in the UK, it travels a fraction of the distance from factory to customer when compared to a chair made in Asia, all of which makes it highly attractive to furniture buyers who put environmental responsibility and sustainability on their list of ‘must haves’.
Alex Whitney, Pli’s design manager, said: “The simple idea behind the Reee chair is to produce a recycled furniture product in the UK that has style, function and durability but does not compromise its environmental credentials - so our customers don’t have to compromise theirs.”
Having originated the idea of producing a quality chair with a low carbon footprint, Pli brought in Sprout Design, a specialist sustainable design consultancy, to develop the finished product. With funding from London Remade, the London Development Agency’s waste and recycling initiative, Pli developed the original prototype into a production-ready model and the Reee chair went into full-scale production in July 2008.
Pli director Christopher Pett comments: “The Reee chair does not put a premium on the cost of sustainable living: it is priced competitively with other domestic and contract seating designs in the UK market. Pli’s mission is to prove that sustainable businesses in the UK can compete on price and quality with imported products.”
The Reee chair will go on sale at the Eden Project’s visitor shop in Cornwall and through selected retailers and contract suppliers across the country in September. During the London Design Festival it will also be available to buy in Selfridges, London, in the Designersblock pop-up shop located on the 4th floor.

Another don’t care topic just to cover up the many SCEE problems or Pro-misses

Great story. Now what about Wipeout HD, Life with Playstation, Home beta invites, PSN cards, etc?
Here is some more information perhaps a bit more useful for PS3 owners, pre-paid credit cards such as Entropay are no longer allowed on PSN. All those hoping to purchase content off the US store (such as those who have a US import copy of a game and want DLC) will now have to go without. This is what happens when SCEE delay releases by months and everyone turns to the cheaper, more content rich US store.

@3 [JohnSketch]:
I’ll drink to that… bottoms down… ‘chairs’!
A little unfortunate that a page celebrating the Sony PS2 console also makes reference to The European Communities Waste, Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive.
Just be grateful that Nintendo didn’t jump on that b[r]and wagon!

The situation is indeed dire if the breaking news on a PS3 site consists of a picture of a chair made from bits of PS2.
How about some honest information regarding SCEE and why things are taking soooo long? We might be a little more undestanding if we knew the truth.

Wish you’d sat on that story! Why does it have to look like a school chair?

Completely unrelated, but does anybody want to buy a Logitech Driving Force Pro for £60? I think it’s been used once. Drop me an email at baseballfuryrecords at gmail dot com if you’re interested

@marvzilla, I signed up for an Entropay account and it didn’t work. Checked the Internetz and a lot of people are saying the same thing. Guy said on the US forums they had stopped it so looked at the US site and it said this:
The following are currently NOT acceptable forms of payment at the PLAYSTATION Store:
Prepaid Credit Cards
Bank drafts or checks
International* Credit Cards
International* Cash Cards
* Countries outside of the United States and Canada
If anyone has signed up recently (last month or so) and had a different story please update.

@ matt - Hmm I bought both Novastrike and 1942HD a couple of weeks ago, suing my Visa card, that is from a swedish bank, living in Denmark.
The difference I noticed was, it’s not possible to register the card, it keeps telling me that is is invalid information, but when I go into the store and makes a purchase directly there and enter my information, it was accepted - but haven’t tried to buy any more, but one thing is for sure - it isn’t over a month ago I bought the games.
