no LBP theme beta lottery… mm…
no Mercs2 demo is a gyp as i’m not buying it until i demo it.
i loved the first one to bits but all the whiney negative reviews
lately are putting me off.
rental first perhaps.?
the Soulcalibur IV demo is fun though, been playing it the last 2 weeks.

I liked mercenaries 1 but I’m trading mercs 2 for starwars TFU tomorrow, its very poor for a next-gen game.
Will check out Fracture demo on what is a good update.. though not as good as next weeks..

Kinda agree with the general concensus
Mercs 2 was a big dissapointment, i dont buy allot of games and i like to think that the ones i do by are all AAA.
I was wong with this one, completed in under 5 hours and have feel no reason to go back to it at all, waste of money and only worth a rent.
Although if your still interested check ebay cause its on with no reserve (couldnt help the shameless plug)

Plenty in the update this week, so thanks SCEE. I hope this trend continues. Especially looking forward to Wipeout HD next, week, as long as that launches without a hitch i’ll be a happy gamer!
One question, is there any news on the EU video store? The japanese are getting theirs soon (as shown by the 2.43 update) and the US obviously have had theirs for a while, so any word for us europeans? I’ve noticed there have been fewer blu-ray and theatrical trailers on PSN, which i assume is due to them being uploaded to the video stores.
And are there any plans to remove the stereo limit on file based media? I’d really like to put some of my video files with 5.1 sound onto my PS3, but it seems a waste as they’ll be downmixed to stereo. Would this affect the video store as well? I assume the movies released on there will be in 5.1 sound, otherwise people may as well pick up a used copy of the DVD.
Oh, and more trophy support please!
I dont want this to come off as a moan, more like highlighting some small niggles. The PS3 seems to have come on leaps and bounds recently, and looks to get even better over the xmas season.

Price Promotion
Call of Duty 4 Map Pack 1-week price promotion @ $4.99 (from 9/18/ - 9/25)
Note from Infinity Ward: We’re kicking off a full week of promotions for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare this week, starting on Thursday, Sept. 18 at 2pm (PT). We’ll kick it off by dropping the price of the #1 Add-on DLC on PSN, the Variety Map Pack, to the price of $4.99 all week long. Four new maps – Creek, Broadcast, Killhouse, and Chinatown will be great new locations to rank up when we switch on the Double XP this weekend. Some of the IW crew will be jumping on Friday between Noon – 4pm (PT) to rank up and take on any open challenges from the community. Be sure to add our PSN IDs and drop us an invite if you see us online.

“Creek, Broadcast, Killhouse, and Chinatown” are the additional multi-player maps in the UK “Game of the Year” edition aren’t they?

Fracture demo was dull. Another FPS - just what we need! Roll on next Thursday. The government should declare a national holiday on 25th September for an official day of Wipeout awesomeness.
Comment by reakt — Sep 19, 2008 @ 9:33 am
Not great in terms of the actual content this week but not a bad update overall (I’m not going to cry over not getting Merc:2).
Next week we get Wipeout, LBP is soon, a Mirrors Edge demo will be showing up sometime soon and I’m sure there is more to come. Running up to Christmas I think we’re going to have more than we know what to do with on PSN (or so I hope).
Not that I care, Wipeout and LBP are coming!
What else matters?
Comment by Shrui — Sep 19, 2008 @ 9:43 am
The “Mirror’s Edge” playable demo may be as early as next week if you read between the lines at the article below (as it doesn’t go as far as saying when the demo is out)…

Mirror’s Edge dated, pre-orders get bonus
Thursday 18-Sep-2008 2:57 PM
November 11 for EA’s free-running FPS
EA has slapped an official street date on its exciting FPS Mirror’s Edge, which will be out in Europe on Xbox and PS3 on November 11.
Developer DICE has also detailed the demo, which will be hitting Xbox Live and PSN ahead of the November release.
The demo features the prologue of the game including the tutorial and a segment of the single-player story mode, says the developer.
But from September 26 anyone who pre-orders Mirror’s Edge will get a code that unlocks the Time Trial mode in the demo - you can even race against your friends’ ‘ghost’ run as they scramble across the rooftops.
“Mirror’s Edge is bringing something new to the action-adventure genre this holiday by putting the player in the shoes of the hero, seeing what she sees, feeling what she feels,” says Owen O’Brien, Senior Producer, DICE. “We wanted to create an entirely new experience, with a different type of heroine and a world that not only looks fresh and new but has unique gameplay.”
A release date for the PC version is still forthcoming, though EA says it’ll be out in the winter.

@25 Robothamster - They announced that because of the Thursday updates to the PSN the Playstation offer would run for a week, from the 18th. Also the US store’s update bought them in at half price yesterday. Either we will get them next Thursday or not all GRRRR!

@reakt
FPS = First Person Shooter
First person perspective is “looking through the eyes”
Fracture is a 3rd person shooter, not first person…
There is a difference. (sorry to be pedantic)
but your right I found Fracture to be a bit dull, with standard cookie cutter gruff space marine design.
I did find the land deformity mechanic interesting, but I fear as most Lucasarts staff have been fired in the middle of the games development…
(The studio is closing down soon)
Nothing will be really fleshed out in the retail version of the game, and I predict the ending will feel “rushed”
(sorry people who enjoyed the demo)
As for “Wipeout Day” recommend that on Wednesday everybody develops a mysterious cough, so when you phone in sick on Thursday it doesn’t look to suspicious…

Sadly I work in an office with 150 other geeks so it will be a bit suspect when all the PS3 owners don’t show up.
I’m just hoping my girlfriend doesn’t expect any attention that night! Thank god for WoW and her recent addiction to it!
Comment by Shrui — Sep 19, 2008 @ 11:05 am

You have to be careful, WoW addiction can be a double edged sword…
One night “you” could be wanting attention and shes in the middle of a raid…
Its not so good when the sock is on the other hand, or the glove is on the other foot…

Regarding the Mirrors Edge demo the press has seen a few versions, the main difference between them is a targeting reticule, the demos without one have been making people feel motion sick…
I hope there is a option to turn it on/off in the final game. I would prefer to play without one at all, but If I’m feeling green about the gills I can just put it back on…
Also the PS3 version (of the full game) will have exclusive download content over the 360 version, no idea what it will be, but it will be only on PSN…

I can’t wait to get my PS3 on and check out the PSN store. It’ll be amazing to see all of the fresh content there for me to browse and pluck items from. No, I’m not saying that this, or any of the past updates are great, but I simply haven’t had the internet at home for well over two months now, so I’ve got two months worth of PSN updates to sift through.
Two months worth of PAL PSN updates is something to get excited about. One normal weeks updates quite simply isn’t.
Comment by The-Unknown — Sep 19, 2008 @ 12:45 pm
Think I’ll just settle for Friday off work instead, no doubt the update will be late in the day as it usually is when theres a big release. Sitting at home opening and closing the store might actually make me ill, hopefully my 5.1 will be delivered before then

Comment by Aragorn1001 — Sep 19, 2008 @ 12:50 pm
@Monkey - Yes, I know the difference. My mistake. Anyway, I’m going to invent a new genre - second-person shooter. All the action is seen through the eyes of the person getting shot at. It’ll be super difficult to play.
Comment by reakt — Sep 19, 2008 @ 12:58 pm
Why release the Rock Band export key when there’s no release date for Rock Band 2 in the UK, and when there is it’s going to be some time after the X360 release, making that software useless for at *least* a month?
Comment by iapetus — Sep 19, 2008 @ 4:05 pm
One of my kids is currently playing the “Mercenaries 2: World in Flames(tm)” Demo from the US ‘Store (having flown across the pond & back again in the last 24 hours, obviously), and without him knowing I have the full version stil sealed out of view.
Our dialogue goes…
Mini-Me: “Can we buy the full version?”
Me: “Don’t you want to play something else?”
Mini-Me: “Yes, this again… I need to find my team mates”
Me: “But why does the rocket launcher on your back disappear when you are on the Sports Bike or climbing up a ladder?”
Mini-Me: “Dunno… it just does”.
I then turn to my PC to type the above, and he has quit the demo & loaded up “NBA Live 09″ (also from the US ‘Store).
He then turns to me knowing I was waiting to play “Burnout Paradise” (with the newly installed “Davis” patch), and says… “Dad, I wish we had more than one PS3, so I could play on one, & you could play on another”.
Um, yes, that may mean I get a ‘go’ on *my* PS3 from time-to-time, yes.
[Sigh]
It appears “Mercenaries 2…” is a kids game for those with the attention span of the fifteen minute demo mission & those who do not question why objects being carried disappear when they are too cumbersome to animate.

Nice update, better than the US store!
Comment by lxd — Sep 19, 2008 @ 4:51 pm
This is ridiculous.
This update somehow does not apply to the Dutch PSN apperently, since there is NO Fracture Demo to be seen.
And there is STILL no Force Unleashed demo (Even though the game is out now).
Why ?
What is the reason that SCEE does not release those demo’s in the Netherlands ? We are a part of Europe too.
Comment by DoggySpew — Sep 19, 2008 @ 6:10 pm
Fracture is crap - the unique ‘mechanic’ allowing you to Terraform the ground only applies to specific areas of terrain.
Feels a lot like ‘flip that switch/turn that valve’ etc etc to proceed.
Weak.
Comment by Mike — Sep 22, 2008 @ 4:28 am
ARGH! Has anyone in Europe got the double XP weekend and Variety Map Pack at half price?
I could see that on the US store this went as promised, but I cound’t see this happening on the European store (at least not on the Portuguese store)!
Is anyone trying, or indeed screwing the europeans again?!
Comment by Ricardo — Sep 22, 2008 @ 10:06 am
I don’t think I’ve read any reports of the offer being anywhere except the US, Ricardo.
I certainly didn’t see the offer on the UK ‘Store.
Just looked again now, and there is nothing listed, other than the “Variety Map Pack (Game Pack)” for GBP 6.99 (with the note: “To play this content you must be using Disc ID BLES500148″).
“…new multiplayer maps… ‘Creek’… ‘Broadcast’… ‘Chinatown’… ‘Killhouse’…”
“HDTV screen resolution: 720p, 1080i, 1080p
Network Players 2-16″
Sorry if that is not what you were expecting.
BFN,
fp.
Comment by fanpages — Sep 22, 2008 @ 11:02 am
@fanpages
Yep, I was expecting this offer to be extended to Europe too, of course. Sony (and/or the developer) already make us europeans pay more for the game, pay more for the maps add-on (and they even went to the length of making the Variety Pack region locked so we couldn’t decide to take advantage of the dollar/euro exchange rate, if we wanted too!) and then, once again, not only did the XBbox 360 owners got this offer 1 week in advance (in the US), we also remain stuck with a 10 Euros rip-off for something that should have been made free to the original COD4 owners!
Why don’t they learn with the “Burnout Paradise” guys?! Great new content FOR FREE. That’s the way to treat and respect someone that has already paid for their game!
I love playing COD4, but I just don’t like these “Martyrdom” tactics…
