Three Speech has just heard that a demo of hotly anticipated off-road racer, MotorStorm Pacific Rift (as if we need to explain what MSPR is to you guys…) will be made available to a lucky few next Thursday. Some of you lucky lucky people will be selected at random to receive an email with a voucher code allowing you to download the demo, with it being made available to everyone else next month.
We’re expecting more details on this next week so keep checking back. Sadly Three Speech can’t do anything to increase your chances of being chosen, but you know we would if we could…

Nice one

WHY?!?!? If the demo’s ready to go - just release it to all! I detest these stupid marketing stunts and I’m SICK of waiting for something good to be released.
Comment by Aragorn1001 — Sep 5, 2008 @ 12:41 pm
Got to admit, this is pointless. As #2 said, why do this if it’s ready?
Comment by Cho — Sep 5, 2008 @ 12:44 pm
I will sell my sisters underwear collection on ebay for access to the demo ….
Think i’m kidding?!?!?!?!
Comment by JohnSketch — Sep 5, 2008 @ 12:48 pm
Utterly pointless. If the demo is ready let everyone have it. I understand the need for online multiplayer betas to be restricted but surely this offline offering can be given to all?
Comment by SlapnutzUK — Sep 5, 2008 @ 12:51 pm
Yeah, I’m sick of these marketing stunts too, but that’s only if I don’t get on the first list of happy people. I wanna play it right now, and if I can get a blast on it early, then sign me up for a happy smile please! I think it’ll be rather good. Hoping the non-racing part is designed better than the last one, and that the menus flow nicely. I wonder if we can expect the demo to have a degree of online racing too? Not that I race online, in any racing game. Shooters don’t seem to suffer as badly as racing when the online bit gets busy. Mmm! Anyway…
Comment by LordOfRuin — Sep 5, 2008 @ 12:52 pm
Demos are a marketing tool, basically an advert, and releasing one to the general public a month or more before the game comes out would be stupid. The best time to release a demo of a game is probably a week before the game itself is in the shops, that way you’re less likely to lose people’s attention. That’s when you can expect the Motorstorm 2 demo to get a general release.
What SCEE are doing here (and SCEA via Qore) is trying to get two lots of publicity from a single demo. I think marketing stunts like this are par for the course these days, especially if you want PSN to remain a free service.
Comment by BadgerBadger — Sep 5, 2008 @ 12:53 pm
Bloody hell, all you people do is complain, WTF is wrong with you?
Comment by Warren Gee — Sep 5, 2008 @ 12:54 pm
Is this in “accomodation” to the guys in the US, who have to pay for the demo via Qore?
If so, FU… really… these marketing techniques are disgusting!
Comment by TheWretched — Sep 5, 2008 @ 12:57 pm

[ threespeech.com/blog/2008/07/make-friends-with-motorstorm-pacific-rift/ ]
There would be little point demonstrating a title in selected shopping centres over the rest of this month if the same demonstration was available to download.
Also, the release of the playable demo version will be timed so that it gives maximum publicity to the title, and not so far away from the commercially available Blu-ray title date so that the public forget about it hitting the shelves.
Without pre-orders, if a title is not purchased in the first week & hence doesn’t make the Top 10 charts for the following week, then stores will very quickly remove it from their high profile areas to make far for incoming titles that may generate higher profits.
The fact that the US Qore subscribers get access to it this week is another point entirely!

I think this is to avoid EU customers complaining as those in the US (and some of us not in the US) who have been ripped off by Qore (see my post in the PSN update thread) will get to it earlier.
As mentioned above it also generates some extra hype and internet traffic as well. yawn!
If I get it and the voucher isn’t tied to the account I will happily pass mine on for free. No underwear required.*
*unless she’s hot and wearing them at the time
…. and legal.
Comment by Shrui — Sep 5, 2008 @ 1:34 pm
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i just want the demo already!!!

Great news…
Hoping for more info soon.
Comment by Navid — Sep 5, 2008 @ 1:38 pm
@13 [Shrui]:
I don’t think John mentioned the underwear was designed for females. His family may just have odd collective past-times.
If it all does turn to sh.., erm, dust, then may I blag your voucher code, please?
I can buy some underwear of your li[c]king & post it to you (worn, or otherwise), if you wish
But yes, there’s no such thing as bad publicity.
More people talking about the title keeps it relevant & in people’s conscience at the release date.
A Collector’s Edition for titles that are pre-ordered seems to be a common marketing ploy at present; US “Resistance 2″ & US “Prince of Persia”, being two examples.
I wonder if the UK will see any ’special’ versions for sale.

Its a racing game - racing games are 100% linear, They have to be otherwise its not racing(or am i missing the point somewhere)
Comment by linton — Sep 5, 2008 @ 2:30 pm
Yes, linton; right at the end of your sentence.
However, compared to something like “Burnout Paradise”, where you can to ‘cruise’ (free-roam) around the environment & opt to start or finish a race (or other challenge event) at will, is somewhat different.
At least, I think that is what was meant by ‘linear’.

@ 2 & 3 : The reality is good marketting can boost a game’s sales enormously. By making it available to a select few, maybe this will increase the hype if word gets out that it is the elephant’s dangly bits.
Comment by Savage( PSN : CartBlanche ) — Sep 5, 2008 @ 3:16 pm
There are showing the game down at BlueWater shopping centre on the 13 or 14th of Sept, so I might go down to see what the game plays like.
Does anyone know if it will run at 720p or 1080p?
I’ve got a new 1080p telly and am looking for some proper 1080p games for it.

I meant with rwagrds to how you complete the game, complete one ticket to advance to the next using preset vehicles on pre-set tracks. I don’t even recall there being an arcade mode as such.
Comment by Terry — Sep 5, 2008 @ 4:59 pm
Is it possible that the demo isn’t being released to everyone because not enough money as been invested in PSN servers to cope with the potential demand?

*kicks self*
Was at Leeds festival the other week and the Motorstorm Tour had a “hut” over there…
Never wandered over as there was a sea of mud soup to cross from the safe fake metal flooring and silly me brought no wellies. Never ever “needed” them before in 10 years of going to festiials…
(lost my trainers several times that weekend)
As for a limited demo? seems a little pointless as a demo is a promotional tool for sampling purposes before purchase, thus getting people interested in a game…
Or has the defintion changed and I never got the memo….?

@ JohnSketch - would that underwear be USED and UNWASHED? if so make sure you put a ‘buy it now’ option on the listing
at least random people get in the demo early, unlike that sham Home beta deal.
Comment by mobiletone — Sep 5, 2008 @ 8:47 pm
@24 - The opposite is also true. By alienating your already unhappy customer base, you’re more likely to have them stick two fingers up at you when you need them most (i.e. at the tills buying your games)
Comment by Cho — Sep 5, 2008 @ 9:00 pm
@tone
I have a selection of Marks and Sparks washed, and debenhams not so washed
Was really hoping to get into Home but just my luck!, not to mention the upcoming little big planet betas - would love to get into that!
Here’s my fingers crossed someone notices little ol’ me and takes pity
Comment by JohnSketch — Sep 5, 2008 @ 9:10 pm
@ Mr Monkey - nice going without wellies… suprised nobody tried to steal that huge monster truck by the Pacific Rift hut! I buckled and paid £15 quid for a pair on the Thursday, noticed they were £25 by Saturday…
Comment by Tom Eccles — Sep 6, 2008 @ 12:22 am
It’ll be utterly exciting to hear if this game offers next-gen network game play where you can choose who you want to race against, or if this game just hooks you up against some random people on the interwebs — old-fashioned network gaming like you know it from the first version and that GT5P-thing… pff!
Comment by Zta — Sep 6, 2008 @ 2:50 am
@JohnSketch
If there’s any justice Sony have two lists of keys with the following titles:
“Random number of PSN accounts” with hopefully thousands of names under it and the other one is just:
“JohnSketch”
Comment by Shrui — Sep 6, 2008 @ 6:07 am
@ Shuri - i suspect Sony have a very special folder with JohnSketch’s name on it, he’s their secret ‘black op’s’ project
Comment by mobiletone — Sep 6, 2008 @ 9:01 am
If someone posts their voucher on-line will we all be able to download the demo? Or will it be a one-use tied to a PSN name kind of deal?

I hope you can have your own soundtrack in this game - couldnt stand the shouty shouty soundtrack on the 1st game, drove me insane!
Comment by Russ — Sep 6, 2008 @ 12:18 pm
I was lucky enough to get a voucher for the SOCOM confrontation online demo. Who knows maybe I’ll get one for this motorstorm demo too. What the heck - I’m going for a hat-trick on my quest for the littlebigplanet beta at the end of the month! Anyway, some advice- sounds obvious but to increase your chances of getting the invitation email, make sure that under your account settings (on your PS3), you have ticked the box that says something like “notify me of playstation products and services”. I think this box is unticked by default. Surely Sony will not be able to select you for this limited demo unless you have ticked the box!

I’m not normally a fan of racing games but when I first played the original Motorstorm I loved it. It just had a great feel, sense of speed, and brilliant fun.

I got the demo!!!! It is really great you get to play raingod spires in either 1 or 2 players. With a choice of bike, truck, rally car, buggy, monster truck. The only complaint is that the controls are a bit finnicky this time round with a different button for taunt and attack, bunny hops, ducking and the pointless car ram… But otherwise brilliant racing!
