If you’re near Manchester, make sure you don’t miss the public advance previews of LittleBigPlanet that will be taking place from this Friday. As well as the opportunity to play the game pre-release, there will be talks from local artists that have already been creating content in the LittleBigPlanet world.
Click through for more details about the event and let us know in the thread if you’re attending!
Top Mancunian artists Luke Drodz, Sketch City and Chris Drury have had a sneak peek at creating worlds on LittleBigPlanet. Being a caring, sharing bunch, we’d like you to have the chance to try out the game before everyone else too.
So, to celebrate the forthcoming release of LittleBigPlanet, PlayStation is creating a very special place, for everyone, where you can explore the amazing world of LittleBigPlanet and let your imagination and creativity run wild. Come down and play at the temporary pop-up shop from September 12th until October 4th at:
Piccadilly Plaza
City Tower, Unit E2b
Manchester
M1 4BD
The LittleBigPlanet experience starts with players learning about their character’s powers to interact physically with the environment. There are places to explore, creative resources to collect and puzzles to solve– all requiring a combination of brains and collaborative teamwork. As soon as players begin their creative skills will grow and they will soon be ready to start creating and modifying their surroundings– the first step to sharing them with the whole community.
Characters have the power to move anything in this glued and stitched-together 3D landscape; they have the power to design, shape and build both objects and entire locations for others to view and play. There’s no complicated level editor; all of these skills can be learned by simply playing the game. Creativity is part of the gameplay experience and playing is part of the creative experience. Players can make their world as open or as secretive to explore as they like. When it’s ready, they can invite anyone within the LittleBigPlanet community to come and explore their patch– or can go and explore everybody else’s.
With daily activities, special events and competitions for all audiences, there is something for everyone - from lazy Sunday sessions and family days to evening events and workshops. Check out www.littlebigplanet.com for the latest calendar and news.
Luke Drodz, Sketch City and Chris Drury are going to be coming down to the shop to explain the ideas behind their game designs too - catch Luke on September 20th, Sketch City on the 27th, and Chris on October 4th.
Entrance is free. Space is limited. Early arrival recommended.

Good to have something up north in the UK for a change, but I need it to be more up north (ie near Newcastle) to attend…
Also so design students are going to have a crack at making something in LBP

What’s the word on the beta? News flying all over the place that there is a theme-download-signup happening this week. See http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=333902 and http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2008/09/17/lbp-beta-details/

[...] Fancy heading to Manchester? Â ThreeSpeech have posted about an early way to get your hands on LittleBigPlanet, and it’s smack bang in the middle of the UK (or thereabouts). Â Simply head on down to the Piccadilly Plaza in Manchest (M1 4BD) and get your mitts on the game before it hits the shelves. Â The PR says it starts on the 12th of September, so unless the date is wrong (we heard this coming Friday) it’s already in action, and goes on to the 4th of October. [...]

Sketch City ?? John’s been keeping that one quiet
can’t believe LBP is 6 weeks away still. i need it now.
@ Mr Monkey - i like the idea of a LittleBigPlanet Game Jam, i think TS should hold a challenge once we get our hands on a copy. give it ’till a week after launch so we can get used to the tools then have 24hrs to create and upload levels tagged with ThreeSpeech in the title or something, maybe a billboard on the in game level. c’mon TS i think you should go for that, think of all the free advertising possibilities

I still don’t “get” this game.
Am I the only person in the Universe who doesn’t find any interest in it at all?
I’m sorry to sound stupid, but I’m just not feeling the love with all the hype.

hai guys, the LBP theme is on the japanese Store for those of you currently over there on holiday, like i am *coff* it’s basically a wallpaper and some boring default icons, but you get into the beta lottery.
same coming for our Store tomorrow?
thinking more about the TS Game Jam, compo runs over the course of a weekend a week after the games released and then on the following monday we can post scene shots, uploads etc. and announce a winner at the end of the week depending on ratings/downloads/howeverthehellitworks or TS can just give us all LBP plushy dolls for being so awesome
seems like too good of an idea to waste to me.

feeling it now?
i think i’m downloading a dUKEnuKEM 3d DEMO.
nevr can be sure on the Japanese Store.
er… i blame the homemade wine personally….
Comment by mobiletone — Sep 17, 2008 @ 8:42 pm
Yup… the Japanese ‘Store would be a great place to hang out (when in Japan, obviously), if only the words were in English.
There’s always plenty of stuff I’d like to look at, but like ordering by numbers from a foreign take-away menu, you never quite end up with what you expect… then half an hour later you’re hungry for more anyway.
As for the bag’o'bricks… now you come to mention it, no.
I do hear everybody raving about this game, and it is a fantastic feeling to be an advocate for the console that this game is coming to, but I’m just not with the programme.
A playable demo may help.
Back to the Japanese ‘Store then, methinks…

oh, it was bionic commando
love the randomness of the Jp store
as for LBP it’s the ability to create your own levels
and objects that does it for me. and the fact i haven’t
played a good platform game for aeons.

@ mr monkey - that’s probably why i thought it, silly tiny icons! nothing to do with the couple of large glasses of wine i’d just had.
@ Sketch - try to grab as many copies as you can before the security suss out what you’re doing

@17 [JohnSketch]:
Nope, not me, John, sorry.
I’m now 230+ miles away in Kent. If I still lived in the North West I would be there just to see what all the fuss is about (and to meet you [all]) too, though, as I visited the record stores on Oldham Street every Friday & Saturday anyway.
I spotted this information on the Mediamolecule blog a couple of days ago, but didn’t make you all aware of it as I didn’t think “groan” men who be interested in visiting the seedier streets of Manchester looking for some sackboy action.
How wrong can you be, huh?
PS.

i’m going on saturday or maybe sunday, not sure if anyone else around here at Three Speech will be attending it though. i’m just rushing because i’m terrified of dying in a freak accident *before* LittleBigPlanet comes out, so it’ll be good to get my hands on the game at the pop-up space.
…and the greatest thing about not being a guy is that i can openly find sackboy the cutest thing on earth without feeling like i have to explain myself!

@21 [Three Speech]:
Will you be carrying a newspaper under your arm, and wearing a pink carnation in your button hole, or will you just have a large target on your back?
Judging by the photos just uploaded to TheSixthAxis, the store is more “pop out” than “pop-up” looking at the visitor count…

I’m confused.
Is this starting “this Friday” (ie 19th) or “12th September”?
Is this on all day every day until October 4th, or only certain times and dates to be announced?
When the postcard says “check out http://www.littlebigplanet.com for the latest calendar” does it mean the LBP blog, because there’s nowt on the official site?
It’s less than half an hour from where I’m sitting, bug I don’t want to waste an hour plus parking fees to discover it isn’t open.

I’ll make sure to leave any threespeech folk a present or two with the folk in the building
if i dont see you
Comment by JohnSketch — Sep 18, 2008 @ 7:00 pm
@26 [JohnSketch]:
I used to have an incontinent pet dog that did that.
(Left presents for people)
Does that mean if you do see the folk (or just the female [Emily?] with the “cute sackboy” craving) that you won’t leave her a present?
The name Emily originated as a French name, didn’t it?
If it is Emily who you’ll meet you could always leave her a letter.
(I really need to get out more)

LittleBigPlanet’s SackBoy Coming to Pain
We predict you’re going to feel like a jerk flinging this cute, little guy around.
By Philip Kollar, 09/17/2008
We had previously heard how God of War’s Kratos and Heavenly Sword’s Nariko will be making special appearances as preorder bonuses in LittleBigPlanet. What we didn’t know is how that game’s adorable mascot, SackBoy (pictured here), will also be checking into another PlayStation 3 game.
The latest issue of Game Informer reports that SackBoy will appear as a bonus character at some point in the future for the PlayStation Network downloadable title Pain. Though the magazine doesn’t provide any information on when or how SackBoy will be made available, we can already hear the cringes and gasps PS3 owners will be making as they whip the poor guy into various death traps to rack up points.
Upon hearing the news about SackBoy’s journey to Pain, Nick Suttner, the author of 1UP’s review of the downloadable game, immediately raised the score three grades and proclaimed Pain his runner-up game of the year. Behind LittleBigPlanet, of course.

PS. With “LittleBigPlanet” (now) being seeing a UK release date of 24 October 2008, do you think either “Far Cry 2″ or “Midnight Club: Los Angeles” will see any high street sales that week?

I’ve been today, though I had to stand around for a while as it didn’t open till 2pm.
It’s run by an enthusiastic bunch who are neither Sony nor Media Molecule, so there’s little point grilling them. Though there’s plenty of PS3s, the sound is off so they can play generic club music. Hmmph.
The PS3s are not running the final Gold version it appears - there’s debug information in the corner and still some significant flaws in the pod and during creation. Gameplay is rock solid though.
And it was gameplay that was the surprise - the levels can be astonishingly sophisticated considering the simple toolset, and some are very long. There’s loads of hidden stuff to find, toys to play with, but the biggest (and best) impression I was left with was that the levels are far from trivial - some have really hard sections.
It’s really, really impressive, but a note of caution: there is a limit to the “everything is made with the built-in tools” claim. The levels certainly seem to be made (and are editable) with th built-in tools, but many of the objects in those levels, and the decorations you can apply to your own objects, certainly CANNOT be created in-game.
That classic LBP object from many videos, the bowl of chillis, is a case in point - you can’t make the bowl; you can’t make the chillis. What you CAN make is almost any shape cut-out, extruded to one of four thicknesses. You can stick any number of these together in three planes, apply different materials to them and even edit the position of each and every corner node… but only in the one plane. You can’t make a sphere, or a cylinder that isn’t end-on (if you see what I mean).
Having said that, the editting tools are hard enough to use successfully as it is. I really don’t see how full 3D object mesh creation could be delivered to the masses in a simple form.
In summary, a really good game that’s going to have an extraordinary future once people with real skills start using it. In that respect, it’s really a lot closer to modelling clay than Lego.
