As SOCOM fans will probably know Eurogamer has got 6000 (count ‘em, 6000) multiplayer beta keys for SOCOM: Confrontation. Precise details of how the distribution will work should appear on Eurogamer in due course, so you’d be wise to organise yourselves into shifts and start refreshing round the clock.
Bear in mind this batch of keys are UK only, all our readers from further afield should be aware that their specific territories will be distributing keys in different ways (any blogs or sites with confirmed news on SOCOM keys in other territories should post a link in the thread). More info on the UK keys available from the excellent team at Eurogamer.
Excited UK?
oh yes (in style of churchill dog)

From the Eurogamer.net page:
—
Update, 3rd September: Sony has been in touch to say that we can only give the codes to people in the UK, because other territories have arranged their own promotions. Obviously we would prefer to give them to anyone, but it’s not up to us in this case. So that’s bad news. On the plus side, that means there will be more in circulation elsewhere, so Eurogamer readers outside the UK should keep their eye on local news sources for more.

@ Bert
I did read that “other territories” have other “promotions”. I’ll tell you right now what Denmark gets for promotion: nothing. And most likely it will be the same in most other countries.
Even if there was a promotion, how would we find it? SCEE never says anything and this blog only covers UK.
Comment by Tiran Kenja — Sep 3, 2008 @ 4:44 pm
UK only? Can’t say I’m surprised. I dont hold much hope for AU/NZ beta codes. If SCEE themselves aren’t distributing them…..who the hell are?
Comment by SinsToJudge — Sep 3, 2008 @ 4:46 pm
Just out of interest why didn’t SCEE choose to use their semi-official Blog to distribute these keys? I’m guessing money was involved…
It would be nice if ThreeSpeech could get hold of more beta keys in future though, how about a competition to win some places on the Home beta for example? hint hint

Not sure if Eurogamer would target Australia & New Zealand as those two countries are outside of Europe.
Perhaps you could contact your region Sony office & ask them who is distributing the beta keys in your area.
Eurogamer are based in Brighton, UK.

yeah I managed to get one.
Surly a fairer system would be an email ballot? Every one who wants into the beta submits there email and playstation ID and 6000 people are chosen randomly. That way no servers would crash and there would be no time constraints (ie not having to be online at a particular time).
Does anyone else think this is a fairer system?
Comment by streetmagix — Sep 5, 2008 @ 6:16 pm
I think it is a conspiracy between Zipper Interactive & employers making sure their employees don’t slope off before 4pm on Friday.
Nobody wants to be between wireless hotspots at that time.
A ‘fairer’ system may be to only allow PS3 or PSP browsers to access the site so that all the Microsoft & Nintendo owners cannot now re-sell the codes on eBay.
How many extra subscribing members do you think Eurogamer.net gained in the last few days?
It must have been worth it to them.

Oh yeah… [ooops] “SOCOM: (U.S. Navy SEALs) Confrontation” has been developed by Slant Six Games.
Zipper Interactive created the ‘SOCOM’ series.
Just before anybody jumps on what I said above [as I know some people like doing like kind of thing]!

@33 [GeorgeyBoy]:
You needed to pre-register at the Eurogamer.net site & visit the link in the blog entry (click the ‘Eurogamer’ text in the last sentence) last Friday around 4pm.
I wouldn’t worry about missing out though, as since Friday evening we have managed to gain entry to one playable match, and two spectator mode matches.

SOCOM beta having a hard time.
Posted by Ves
on Sep.08, 2008 at 12:05 pm
SCEA apologised to the beta testers of SOCOM: Confrontation for the abnormal latency, crashes, disconnections, long load times, login errors and community features such as clans and stats not functioning correctly (or at all)
Despite it still being in beta SOCOM: Confrontation showed similair issues Metal Gear Online had during it’s first days in (public) beta when it was available.
The high demand of gamers makes it hard sometimes to calculate how servers will cope with this traffic. There is one advantage during this period, they can see what the limit is of the servers and how they can optimize them to withstand such pressure.
Seth Luisi expect that these issues will be resolved as quickly as possible and that you will see some improvements progressively over the next couple of days. They do not expect to have the issues completely resolved until close to the end of next week.

Sony has apologised to would-be soldiers whose SOCOM: Confrontation beta experience was ruined by overwhelming demand on the game servers.
Developer Slant Six will be rolling out the first of many patches today at noon, which means game servers going down for a couple of hours.
Patch version 1.10, according to the official website [ socom.us.playstation.com/default.aspx ], adds regional European and Australian servers as well as various stability fixes.
There’s still more to do, but subsequent updates will aim to tackle this in bite-sized chunks. And let us not forget that this is a beta test, which is, er, designed to pick up on this sort of thing so it won’t happen when the game is actually finished.

The people over at Slant Six are definately listening to the community’s feedback and will be releasing the 1.30 patch for the beta fixing these issues:
Abnormally long network synchronization issues when some users in a game have a poor network connection. This issue causes 4-7 minute (or longer) load times when late joining a game.
Fixed an issue where respawn game late joiners were sometimes stuck in spectator mode and could not respawn into the game.
Removed the latency detection network test which was causing some users with poor network connections to receive the network latency icon (red X).
Fixed an issue where clients with different client versions (patches) could play together in a default medley game.
Fixed an issue where if the session master leaves the game, late joiners could not “green up” and late join into the game.
Fixed corrupt characters in the European and Japanese EULAs and Server News.
Fixed many join game issues and made joining a game quicker. We are still optimizing this.
Fixed an issue where if you add and then remove someone from your block list they were still unable to send you a message.
Improved accuracy while moving (based on user feedback). Partial implementation. More improvements to come.
Reduced the encumbrance penalty (based on user feedback).
Changed the default round time for Medley games from 8 minutes to 6 minutes (based on user feedback).
They are also working on the following:
Some late joiners have really bad framerate (5fps) and crash if they exit the game from the start menu. This happens at approximately 1/50 frequency.
Some late joiners will get stuck on the round complete screen. This is timing dependent.
Some users will crash in-game. This happens at approximately 1/100 frequency (games).
Some late joiners get stuck on the loading screen, loading into a game. This happens at approximately 1/100 frequency.
Green or corrupted particles appear for RPG, C4 and AT4 explosions. This happens at approximately 1/4 frequency (users).
Further tuning and tweaking based on user feedback.
They do are doing a great job and are truly listening to the community so be sure to get the patch tomorrow if you are in the Socom: Confrontation Beta.

I experience a unique ‘glitch’ (non-standard feature, if you will) this morning whilst trying to use the servers…
The sound on my game went off completely. No end of checking my TV, or my PS3 settings fixed it. Not hearing the enemy creeping up on you was somewhat of a set-back & I was forced to quit.
Then I just gave up after 4 minutes of the rotating, erm, three-pointed stick thing, in the centre of the screen.

SOCOM Confrontation Public Beta 1.40 Patch Incoming
Posted by Seth Luisi
We are happy to announce that the SOCOM Confrontation Public Beta 1.40 Patch will be released on Friday, September 26th, at 1200 GMT/UTC (8am EDT, 5am PDT, 1pm BST, 9pm JST).
The SOCOM Confrontation 1.40 patch addresses the following issues:
Fixed an issue which was causing an abnormally large number of simultaneous kills.
Optimized the Armory so that selecting weapons, attachments and general menu navigation are much faster.
Fixed another issue where you could get stuck in spectator cam when late joining a game.
Fixed an issue where occasionally late joiners would have very low framerate and crash when exiting a game.
Fixed an issue where occasionally late joiners would have no audio.
Statistics improvements. Statistics are now being tracked at the team level and not the player level. This will ensure stats are tracked for dropped and late joining players.
Further improved load times for late joiners.
Fixed several stability issues.
The following changes were made based on user feedback:
Added new burst firing accuracy tuning when moving. You are now more accurate for the initial burst while moving but accuracy deteriorates as you continue to fire more shots.
Scopes are now accurate.
The select screen scoreboard is now exited by pressing the select button.
Improved tiebreaker rules.
New HUD animation to indicate when you are reloading.
Crosshairs now turn grey when your magazine is empty.
We are actively looking into the following issues which are known to exist in the 1.40 patch. These issues will be fixed in a future update.
The select screen scoreboard, round complete and game complete screens appear blank.
Infrequently, some users loose controller functionality for a couple of seconds.
Please note, this patch also adds game logic to limit the number of people who can late join a game to 5 at a time. If more than 5 people attempt to late join the game you receive a “Game Full” error even though there are still slots in the game. This will be improved in a future update.
Also note, the network latency detection has been added back in. We believe that we have now worked out most of the issues with this. Please report in the SOCOM Confrontation PlayStation.com forums if you are seeing the “red X” disconnect icon under normal gameplay conditions.
Regards,
SOCOM Confrontation Online Team
