It didn’t take long until the excitement around Sackboy leaked into the world of cosplay. We came across this unofficial how-to-make-a-sack-boy-costume website and found it quite incredible - in just a few of steps you too can become Sackboy, complete with accessories. The image shows the man behind the costume, Adam, in full Sackboy regalia. Remember Halloween is just around the corner, this could be the perfect costume. What do you think? Let us know in the thread. If anyone decides to give it a go, make sure you send us some pictures…

The future’s Brighton… the future is Bertie Bassett’s less-than-tasty cousin preparing to jump to the left in ‘ The Time Warp’…
Form an orderly queue, ladies.
(Or shudder that be ‘Foam an orderly queue’)?

Nice costume.
Wipeout HD has been confirmed for Sept. 25th on the US blog. Is this the same for PAL regions?

The only thing that is really missing is a zip down the front…
For a 1st attempt its not bad, next time make the head bit more rounded and use actual sack cloth to cover it, then think they will be winning some cos-play awards…
Comment by Mr.Monkey — Sep 15, 2008 @ 1:17 pm
2nd attempt even, shame actually think the paper mache head would of worked….

@ Matt - Wipeout HD release is Sept 25th according to the US Blog. Of course, it may be different for us Euros.
Comment by Obli — Sep 15, 2008 @ 5:25 pm
It looked enough like a Sackboy for Sony Marketing to make me some nice promises when I bumped into them at Bestival (we’ll see if they keep em)
Comment by Adam — Sep 15, 2008 @ 6:17 pm
More like baw sack boy.
I think people should stop fawning over this cutesy stuffed toy nonsense. It is for little girls.
Comment by Big Gareth — Sep 15, 2008 @ 9:09 pm
@Adam - the man himself! All joking aside your sackboy costume is a grand effort and congrats on getting a link to your site from Media Molecule.

@reakt - Cheers man, now the weirdest thing is seeing blog commenters on Kotaku trying to think up witty ways to put it down
Comment by Adam — Sep 15, 2008 @ 10:34 pm
I look like a Wipeout HD, I did it by drinking a can of Lucozade and running round my garden with my ipod on
Comment by MrJimmy — Sep 15, 2008 @ 10:51 pm
Lol that’s too funny!

Comment by JohnSketch — Sep 16, 2008 @ 8:57 am
@ Adam - don’t believe all that Sony Marketing tell you, i’m still waiting for Jade Raymond to turn up with a pot of chocolate body paint and a bottle of vodka for getting my PS3 tattoo
Comment by formally known as MobileTone — Sep 16, 2008 @ 9:47 am
@ JohnSketch - you mean you’ll stop wearing that powerpuff girls dress now… sorry, kilt
Comment by formally known as MobileTone — Sep 16, 2008 @ 9:49 am
@ThreeSpeech. I find it hard to believe that the “website” appearence is completely coincendental.
Let’s be frank, it’s not the first time Sony have used 3rd partys to promote their products (Erm. ThreeSpeech) like that god-awful “All I want for Xmas is a PSP” website.
Fair enough it might not be directly related to “Three Speech”, but I’d be surprised if this doesn’t stem from Crowd/Ramp or any kind of Sony employed agency.
Come on lads, fess up..
Comment by GEC — Sep 16, 2008 @ 1:59 pm
@GEC - I’m not sure what I can do to persuade you that I’ve got nothing to do with Sony, or any viral/guerilla marketing agency representing them, but I guess I’m kinda flattered that you think that I’m affiliated in some way.
I’m pretty stunned that sites like Kotaku and Three Speech (TS I’d never heard of) linked me up and when I got a trackback from Three Speech I even emailed them to bitch about watermarking my photo. My only connection with LBP is that I kinda know a guy called Jim who works for Mm and if he didn’t link me from the Mm website I doubt you’d ever have heard of makeasackboy.com
As the site explains I made the costume for Bestival and must have fielded 100 enquiries over the two days that I was wearing it as to what I was supposed to be. I initially told a handful of people about the game but soon tired of that as each day wore on and said “I’m a toy” which satisfied no-one
I randomly bumped into a group of folk from Sony marketing who approached me by saying “Are you a Sackboy?” - a question I was delighted to hear - and they all seemed pretty chuffed at the effort that I’d made and said that they’d reward me with some merch (when the game comes out I guess). I made the how to site when I returned to help send traffic to my portfolio website. Simple as that really.
Comment by Adam — Sep 16, 2008 @ 2:46 pm
@Adam.
To be honest there’s not a lot you can do to convince me otherwise, so if you can be flattered by that then cool for you.
Unfortunately, if you’re genuinely someone who felt compelled to create a buzz-website for a Sony game in the run-up to it’s release, then I guess I’m just wrongly tagging you onto a company that has used this this technique before. Guilty by association, not your fault.
The facts are: Sony employ / use viral marketing through methods close to those you’re using. And if indeed you’re the innocent ‘fan’, humbly generating traffic to your own site, then if I were you I’d hop over to http://www.crowddna.com and see if you can, at the least, get a bit of commission for you efforts. (If you’re not already of course!) Their “craft kids” would be all over this..
Comment by GEC — Sep 16, 2008 @ 3:26 pm
@GEC - I totally understand your points but by documenting what I did I’m getting a bit more traffic to my portfolio, I love making a twat of myself in fancy dress and I really enjoyed actually making something non virtual for once (I’m a web designer) so it’s a win win for me even if some suspect more devious actions… I’m probably going to make another LBP costume along a different theme, perhaps I should get a proper job!
Oh, and if Crowd DNA wanted me to make stuff for them for actual money I’d be totally interested in talking to them about that!
Comment by Adam — Sep 16, 2008 @ 4:04 pm
…get to the back of the line with the “stuff for money” idea, Adam. There are plenty of us here before you!
Seriously, your comment was moderated with the use of the TWA Coffee word just like the rest of us, so I suspect you’re OK.
Well,… OK …apart from the ‘dressing-up in a self-made costume of a video game character’ thing, of course.
If it keeps you out of the job market & leaves a gap for me to find something at present, I’m all for it. Keep going with that.
If I find that the PS3 is not getting a price drop to fall in-line with the ridiculously cheap Xbox 360 Arcade & Elite models (I wonder why? Scared, perchance, Microsoft?) so that the budget for the same man is available, then that’s something else altogether.
(All: “That’s something else”)
Have fun… but don’t come near my children, or you’ll find out why they call you ’sackboy’…
BFN,
fp.
