We’ve had LEGO Star Wars and recently LEGO Indiana Jones, but now the Traveller’s Tales team are working on LEGO Batman. With The Dark Knight currently gracing our screens, Keri Allan caught up with product manager Richard Earl to look at the next LEGO superhero to grace our consoles…
“LEGO Batman is certainly the coolest character we have ever realised in LEGO form - and Robin’s not too shabby either,” enthuses Rich when asked “why Batman?” “They’re both very cool, athletic, well trained martial artists and they’re ready to kick ass against the bad guys in Gotham. Having said that, the villains are a wicked bunch themselves…”
The TT team is very excited about the upcoming game set to release this autumn, and think that this will be the best LEGO game they have made so far – it seems that Batman is their favourite superhero!
“These are the coolest characters that we have put into a LEGO game so far, this is down to the fact that the Batman universe offers us such a rich variety of characters to incorporate into the game,” Rich says. “There are classic heroes and villains who have been part of Batman lore for decades and we’re recreating them in LEGO form! You’ll be able to play as the villains as well as the heroes, which is great fun. It’s an action packed adventure too – lots of kicking LEGO ass as the Dynamic Duo and lots of mischief to create as the bad guys.”
But it must have been a challenge working with the big comic company, after focusing on the movie franchises before, as they can be very possessive over how their characters are used. Was it the case with the caped crusader?
“Our producer has some pretty surreal conversations with DC sometimes,” Rich admits. “They’re rightfully protective over Batman who is their ultimate and coolest hero - in my opinion - and the universe that they have created around him, so sometimes there may be things that we want to do in a LEGO Batman videogame that any other Batman might not have done. Without going into the details too much we hope that Batman will be able to join Robin in burning up the dance floor!”
Expect the Batman and his chums to continue the great gameplay experiences that their predecessors brought forth, kicking evil’s butt and solving all puzzles that stand in their way. We’ve given you our Top Trumps predictions for what we expect Batman to be, but do you agree with our crystal ball gazing? Now we just have to hold out till October 10th to see if he’s everything we hope…

Can’t believe he got an 8 for lastability. The lego games seem to be easily forgetable. Maybe it’ll help that this game isn’t based on a movie and they can use whatever story they want, or multiple stories to lengthen the game.

I don’t know what it is about the Lego games, but my girlfriend is hooked. We played Indy to 100% completion, so she popped out and picked up the Star Wars one too (90.8% as we speak). I think it’s more the drop-in drop-out co-op play that has her hooked, but she’s already pre-ordered Batman too.
At this rate I’ll never get MGS4 done.

@Dan - you made the fatal mistake of letting your missus decide what to play. It’s a slippery slope. Next thing you know a bright pink Dualshock 3 arrives in the post.
