PLAYSTATION®Network is the premier source of downloadable games content, with a huge offering of fun, innovative new games as well as classic PlayStation® titles. Already boasting huge successes with the likes of PixelJunk™ Monsters, Super Stardust HD™ and echochrome™, PLAYSTATION Network is ushering in a new generation of top titles from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) with the following on show at Games Convention 2008.
Flower™
A true escape from the modern world, Flower challenges traditional gaming conventions with a lush, vivid environment in which players control the wind, using petals to reshape and revive their game surroundings. Using simple SIXAXIS™ wireless controllers, play involves flight and exploration, as you guide a petal across the landscape. Collecting additional petals and feel the gameplay change from serene to chaotic as you collect more and more. With more than 200,000 individually animated blades of grass, Flower is a game only possible thanks to the power of PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™).
Fat Princess™
In modern life, obesity is a social concern but, in medieval times, it was a key battle tactic! The Fat Princess of the title is your own over-fed royal that you must rescue from your enemy’s dungeon – if you can carry the porky madam to safety, that is. Choose the role of a warrior, archer, mage, worker or priest; your most important weapon here is teamwork as you work alongside up to 15 other players online to defeat the enemy team across ten individual maps and over numerous gameplay modes. Bringing countless players together on PLAYSTATION Network, Fat Princess™ is a blast of hilarious, furious multiplayer fun.
Crash Commando™
Old school gameplay meets next generation technology in Crash Commando™, mixing classic side-scrolling action with intense multiplayer fun in the ultimate slapstick shooter. Up to 12 players slug it out online or offline in frenzied death-matches, taking control of jetpacks, jeeps and tanks on two gameplay layers which can be moved between seamlessly via portals. Sign up with either the Jarheads or the Grunts in all-out warfare for world supremacy on a battlefield strewn with exaggerated gore and special effects. Track your victories with online leaderboards, rankings and trophy support.
Ratchet & Clank™: Quest For Booty
Ratchet and Clank make their return in a bite-sized mini-adventure filled with their trademark crazy weaponry, side-splitting comedy and dazzling 3D animation in this treasure-hunting adventure. Help Ratchet sail solo into a world of galleons, parrots and cutlasses in his quest to uncover booty and his missing mate Clank. Journey through the dark caves of Hoolefar Island, navigate the treacherous Viper Caverns and take on foul-tempered buccaneer and new nemesis Captain Darkwater. Beware: danger lurks around every corner.
The Last Guy™
Set in the aftermath of a strange event that has caused many people to turn into fierce monsters, this fast-paced and fun game challenges players to save humanity by leading everybody else through the streets of world cities to safety. With a focus on gameplay rather than gore, The Last Guy is a game that’ll keep you coming back for more monster mayhem every time. Gather the survivors into lines and lead them through the streets of 14 world cities - all recreated with stunning aerial photography. Each city has an escape zone which you must lead your lines of people into while avoiding the enemy at all costs…
Savage Moon™
Classic tower strategy gameplay heads into outer space in Savage Moon™, as players attempt to protect an isolated planetary outpost from rampaging hordes of gigantic, ravenous space bugs. Position your towers in the best position possible to beat the bugs and convert your victory points into weapons that suit your preferred tactics. Classic strategy gaming meets interstellar gameplay with endless strategic possibilities – can you beat the bugs and save the moon?
PixelJunk Eden™
Prepare to be stunned by PixelJunk Eden™, the game that challenges you to help alien plants flower and bloom in a psychedelic, hypnotic Garden of Eden. Smash into enemies to release batches of pollen, making your flowers grow. Swing higher and higher through your growing paradise, climbing up iridescent stems, swinging from twirling branches, swaying on psychedelic flowers and searching the undergrowth for hidden treasures – with mesmerising graphics and electronic soundtrack created by Japanese artist Baiyon.
Rag Doll Kung Fu™
Rag Doll Kung Fu is a party fighting game based on the ancient principles of kung fu and rag-doll physics. Fast-paced combat, exaggerated action and unique visuals come together in a game that is easy for beginners but has enough depth in its combat system to keep hardcore fighters coming back for more. Using simple SIXAXIS motions to pull off special moves and combat sequences, players compete in matches with up to four other players either online or offline. The perfect party game for experts and beginners alike.
Warhawk™: Operation: Fallen Star expansion pack
The third expansion pack for mighty online warfare title Warhawk, Operation: Fallen Star introduces the remote, forested Tau Crater – the site of a crashed Chernovan warship containing invaluable experimental technology. With the Chernovans trying desperately to salvage the ship, the Eucadians have arrived with a view to stealing it for themselves. This pack brings ten new battlefields to the Warhawk experience – as well as the Infantry Jetpack – a personal rocket pack that allows soldiers to soar above the fray of battle into the aerial realm of the Warhawks themselves.
WipEout™HD
The arrival of WipEout® HD on PLAYSTATION®3 marks the dawning of a new era for the iconic racer, so strap yourself in for anti-gravity combat racing in full 1080p High Definition. Choose a futuristic craft then speed into the thick of the action in adrenaline-fuelled races across eight reversible tracks full of smooth loops, sharp bends and sheer drops. Master the ultra-realistic motion sensitive controls; unleash high-tech weapons to blast your opponents off the track. Take part in global online racing for up to eight players, compete for trophies and test your skills against the best pilots on the planet.
Super Stardust™ Portable for PSP™
One of the most popular PLAYSTATION Network titles arrives on PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable), making outer-space action mobile, so wherever you go, a blast of furious intergalactic shooter fun is close at hand. Retaining all the aspects that made Super Stardust a hit on PS3, Super Stardust Portable is sure to follow in the successful footsteps of its home system counterpart.
(The best of Leipzig was the best of E3)
“Gravitationally Challenged Princess” - Not under the same, erm, pressure as the changes to “Resident Evil 5″ including natives of their home country who just happen to not be politically-correct enough.
“Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic” - I am interested in, but just to see if it is as odd as it looks… still not convinced about the same developer’s “LittleBigPlanet” either.
“Ratchet & Clank™: Quest For Booty” - hasn’t everybody who was interested in this finished it already?
“Warhawk™: Operation: Fallen Star” expansion pack - out this week (well, in the US, at least)… as is “Linger In Shadows”.
Roll on the Tokyo Game Show 2008…

Last Guy should be out this Thursday, instant purchase for me, I love quirky games like that. Then Wipeout HD in September I reckon, they’ll want to get it out before Motorstorm 2 hits in October, releasing them in the same month would be madness.
Also looking forward to GTi Club+ and Fat Princess. There’s a lot of moaning about PSN but I think it’s great.

When is Wipeout HD out, give me a date already…

Anyone see Micrsoft’s presentation schedule at this week’s PaX? Seems to be a lot of Gears of War 2, but not much else. A distinct lack of true exclusives is all I will say.
There are a couple of mysterious TBA slots, so who knows what they will annouce for next year.
Meanwhile on topic : Fat Princess and Flower have peaked my interest.

Trust me.. I have been waiting for WipeEout HD since the original game from 1995. Yes, i´m that old!
Comment by karmacoma01 — Aug 26, 2008 @ 1:39 pm
I like the look of Crash Commando from the footage I’ve seen and Fat Princess also looks alot of fun.
Flower looks very pretty but seems like more of an interactive experience than solid game so I’ll reserve judgement til I’ve actually seen it in action.
I’ve declared my want for Wipeout HD many a time before and nothings changed.. Release date please??
The big bonus for me last week was GTI Club+ as the original arcade game was bags of fun and cost me many a 50p in my past.
Comment by marvzilla — Aug 26, 2008 @ 1:45 pm
@10 [marvzilla]:
I wonder if we are going to be able to buy a USB-powered (or wireless?) handbrake for GTI Club+ like the arcade machine used to have.
Incredibly difficult title to play if I recall correctly. Without the use of the handbrake you just couldn’t make some of the turns.
@ALL:
PS. Anybody here one of the quoted 130,000 who downloaded “Bionic Commando™: Rearmed” since it appeared on the PlayStation Store?

@11 - count me in for Bionic Commando
Comment by MrGilder — Aug 26, 2008 @ 2:10 pm
I got Bionic Commando, but from XBL. I had points left over from when I bought Braid.
Which, by the way, is the best game I’ve ever downloaded. Period.
Comment by BaseballFury — Aug 26, 2008 @ 2:18 pm
@BaseballFury
Braid is quite simply the best puzzle game I’ve played in years, if not the best ever. I can’t think of a game that tops it can you?
Comment by manley — Aug 26, 2008 @ 2:32 pm
yeah, braid is stunning. also picked up Bionic and Ratchet. looking forawrd to flower, fat princess, wipeout etc.
is it just me… or is everyone else finding they are playing PSN / XBL games more than full retail games?! haha.. interesting turn of events.
Comment by SH4RKY — Aug 26, 2008 @ 2:46 pm
@15 [SH4RKY]:
I play “Pain” & “Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection Online” more often than any other title.
I think it is just laziness with regard having to think about, and then actively find a Blu-ray title to get out & play, versus having games pre-installed on the PS3 hard drive.
No… wait, it’s the fact I have to wait 20 minutes & take up 5Gb of precious hard drive space to pre-install the data needed to make the Blu-ray titles run at a decent speed.
Wait until “Home” is available, then I need not leave my house ever again!

Fat Princess!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Comment by JohnSketch — Aug 26, 2008 @ 3:23 pm
Have they added VOIP to Fat Princess yet? That’s going to be what makes my decision whether or not to buy the game.
Comment by Moses — Aug 26, 2008 @ 4:23 pm
If you’re looking forward to Quest for Booty or Pixeljunk Eden, you’re facing the wrong way.
Savage Moon and Wipeout HD look like the cream of the crop to me.
Comment by iapetus — Aug 26, 2008 @ 6:27 pm
Where are the PSN-cards ??????
Buy them for 10€, use them on the US-account and you have 15$ (and you can buy R&C,instead of paying 15€)
but then again it was very quiet about the PSN-cards for the EU
Comment by terrortime — Aug 26, 2008 @ 6:45 pm
i’m just looking forwards to Baja in a couple of weeks.
about the only thing on that PSN list that looks remotely
interesting to me is ‘Flower’
Comment by mobiletone — Aug 26, 2008 @ 8:02 pm
fat princess & rag doll kung fu look like they will b good. cant say im excited about flower tho. this game must hav been thought up by the campest game developers out there!!!!!
Comment by adairdevil — Aug 26, 2008 @ 10:17 pm
@fanpages - I hope they release a handbrake for it GTI Club wouldn’t be the same without it! As you say mastering of the handbrake was the only way to get round most of the corners.
Incredibly fun to play multiplayer, when I used to work in an arcade it used to do much better business than the 4 player large-size Daytona Racing machine. Happy days..
Comment by marvzilla — Aug 26, 2008 @ 10:45 pm
While it is good to see PSN getting some content Sony should provide projected release dates instead of vague “coming soons” and then try to stick to those dates. Getting sick of hearing announcements and then playing the waiting game. I think a couple of those games won’t be out until 2009. The wait for and delays for Wipeout HD have been patently absurd.
Comment by Matt — Aug 27, 2008 @ 5:07 am
Will there be a level creator for “The Last Guy” ?
It would be great to make your own neighborhood an own LTG level.
Comment by Daniel — Aug 27, 2008 @ 9:27 am
Decent variety in the PSN games although I’d really like to see a real strategy game like Civilisation 2, Sim City etc.
@ fanpages - I downloaded Bionic Commando: Rearmed too. Not sure it deserves such a high score from IGN. Couldn’t get used to the controls with the lack of jump. It’s pretty decent imo, just not that amazing… maybe later it improves…?
Comment by Obli — Aug 27, 2008 @ 11:17 am
btw while we’r @it
where is our videoservice …!!!!!
Comment by T3rrortime — Aug 27, 2008 @ 3:56 pm
@26 [Obli]:
Thanks.
Allegedly, the Unreal Engine 3-powered “SiN City” *is* coming to the PS3 [now that the publisher (Red Mile) has taken the project off the previous developer (Transmission Games)]
Did you not like “Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution”? And “…Pirates!” was on the ‘Store this week wasn’t it?
This aside, I wanted to buy “Bionic Commando: Rearmed” for my kids, but they struggle with the “Hack the enemy network” section. Plus the “Challenge Mode” levels were, erm, challenging.
I just went to look up the IGN scoring… “Outstanding” & “9.4″.
GameRankings have it at an average of 87.2% for the PS3. GameSpot (and GameDaily) ‘only’ gave it 80%, with Games(tm) saying 70%.
GBP 6.99 too, isn’t it?
Maybe I’ll wait for a sale…

“Jenova Chen recognized as top young innovator by Technology Review” (Author: Andrew Yoon)

One of the founders of thatgamecompany, the team behind flOw and the upcoming Flower, has been recognized by Technology Review’s TR35 awards. Jenova Chen is being called a “top young innovator” for his work on game design, focusing on how “gaming can be an emotional journey for many different audiences and not just an aggressive experience for young males.”
“Jenova Chen exemplifies what it means to be an innovator. He pushes the boundaries of his industry, questioning assumptions about what gaming can be. Because of his breakthrough vision, the impact from his approach to gaming will be felt for generations to come,” said Krisztina “Z” Holly, USC Vice Provost for Innovation and Executive Director of the USC Stevens Institute for Innovation.
The upcoming flOwer took multiple accolades at E3, including our own award for Best PSN Game. Gamespot also awarded it Best Downloadable Game and Best Graphics.

I think the only puzzle game that has came close to Braid for hair pulling frustation has been Kuruchi on the original PS. But as far as story, emotional response, complete gorgeousness, nothing (as far as Arcade/PSN games go) can compare to Braid. It even beats most full retail games at those things to. And that last level! What a masterpiece. Get this game on PSN NOW!

“Braid… hair pulling…”
Well,… hair weaving, but we get the idea
Sorry to disappoint anybody interested, but “Braid” only has a listing for the Xbox 360 on the PEGI web site presently, so it’s not going to be an imminent release for the PS3/PSN/PSP.

Quest for Booty Blu-Ray Cancelled
By Mark Brown | September 11, 2008
A Sony of Europe representative confirmed to BritishGaming.co.uk that Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty will no longer be heading to retail stores on a Blu-Ray disc.
The 3-4 hour epilogue was released on the Playstation Store on August 21st, but was initially announced for a full retail release on September 12th.
After noticing that no stores had the game for pre-order, we contacted Sony and received this email.
R&C: QFB won’t be released in the UK on Blu-Ray I’m afraid.
Quest for Booty is still available on Playstation Network for £9.99

Update: The Blu-Ray will still be released in other European countries, but not the United Kingdom
Update 2: Insomniac Games’ Community Manager James Stevenson has provided a reason at games forum NeoGAF. “It’s partially due to broadband penetration being strong in the UK, therefore it wasn’t seen as needed”. He also mentions that Ireland will receive Blu-Ray copies at retail, if you’re really craving for a hard copy.
