Judging by the threads recently we’re sure you’ll be interested by this interview with Richard Lemarchand of Naughty Dog. He spoke to us about Uncharted and trophies, and gave us his opinion on what the future holds for the PS3 gaming experience…
Trophies are coming to the PlayStation Network: at last, we’ll be properly rewarded, with virtual silverware, for our stunningly impressive, hard-won in-game achievements. In fact, when we say that Trophies are coming, that isn’t strictly correct: they have arrived, thanks to the latest PS3 firmware update, which adds support for them, accessible via the Cross-Media Bar which, of course, we can now open in the middle of playing a game.
If you want to find out what the Trophy system is like, you can: by replaying Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune which, of course, had its own Medals system for rewarding achievements. As ever, on your behalf, we went straight to the horse’s mouth, in the form of Richard Lemarchand, Co-Lead Game Designer at Uncharted developer Naughty Dog, who was making a rare visit to his native Britain for his summer holidays.
Lemarchand explains the background to Uncharted’s retro-fitted support for Trophies: “While we were finishing Uncharted, we were already thinking ahead to some kind of Trophy system for the PlayStation Network, so we created the Medal system, where players could win Medals for making certain amazing accomplishments in the game: whether it was getting three enemies with a single grenade, or stealth-killing five dudes from behind, and so on.”
“So when the Cross Media Bar Trophy system was announced and we got the development code for it, it was super-easy for us to dovetail our Medal system with the Trophy system. And before we knew it, we had it working.”
Lemarchand pulled out some screenshots to demonstrate: “This is our medal system in Uncharted, so he has just killed three enemies with one grenade. He gets the Dyn-O-Might Medal. We hooked it up so that a few seconds after you get the Medal, you get the Trophy notification. In order to get this, you have to download the patch, so you go to the PSN site and Patch/Uncharted. Then you can win Trophies for any Medal that you haven’t yet unlocked.”
“Once you’ve won a Trophy, you can just bring up the XMB by pressing the PlayStation button, and it pauses the game. Then it overlays, and you can go down into your Uncharted group and see all the Trophies that you’ve won as well as the ones you haven’t unlocked yet. Although some of those are secret, and you won’t see them until you’ve unlocked them. This stuff, of course, is viewable in-game – just like you can, for example, play music in-game. You can go further into the Trophies and study the detail and, of course, you can view them all from the main screen of the PS3.”
Lemarchand reckons this adds replay value to Uncharted: “I think it will be a good reason for people to play the game through again, which was one of our primary goals for creating the Medals system in the first place. I think because of the way Uncharted is structured, with those reveals and surprises, the story is pleasurable in a different way the second time through – in the way that a movie like Memento is, because once you know the surprises, you can have a different appreciation of the story. Going and finding every last bit of treasure, and making sure that you get lots of kills with every different weapon and earning all those Trophies is a great way for people to explore Nathan Drake’s world and get in touch with the richness of it.”
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to convert your existing Uncharted Medals into Trophies, though, as Lemarchand explains: “We didn’t want to lock the Uncharted save-game: we wanted to make it so you could copy it onto a Memory Stick, take it around to your mate’s house and show him where you had got to. That meant that we had to make it so that you had to start a new game if you wanted to get all the Trophies, otherwise we’d have opened ourselves up to cheating, people copying save-games and so on. We do have a system in our new-game system: when you start a new game from the very beginning, you can bring over any Medals that you’ve got. Which means you could start over, you’d keep your personal progress, and you’d get to unlock the Trophies at the high end of the spectrum. So people would see that you were getting the whole set in the game.”
Naturally, the Trophy system will really come into its own when PlayStation Home is up and running, and we all get Trophy rooms, around which we can wander, marvelling at our sheer gaming brilliance. Sadly, Lemarchand can’t talk about Home, though. So we asked him about future iterations of Uncharted: “I can’t talk about that: our current project is still unannounced. We are very hard at work: we’re quite a way into our next production cycle now. It’s great having all of the Uncharted code and tools, but we haven’t announced anything yet. I think all the horrible things that Nate Drake alludes to — which the South Seas pirates get up to with their prisoners — will be inflicted on me when I get back to the office if I spill the beans.” Unspecific, perhaps, but it sounds highly promising.
Lemarchand can talk about another interesting subject, though: the prospect that, in the near future, multi-platform PS3 games will outshine the versions running on rival consoles: “There’s a set of tools called Edge that were developed on the Naughty Dog premises, actually, by a group of very, very senior games programmer, some from Naughty Dog and some from elsewhere. I think it’s tremendously visionary of Sony to make these tools, which are largely low-level libraries.”
Before proceeding, we need to explain a little of the unique manner in which the PS3’s much-admired, phenomenally powerful Cell processor works. Essentially, it contains eight mini-processors called Synergistic Processor Units (SPUs), six of which can be given tasks to perform at any given time. Lemarchand continues: “It’s code that runs on SPUs, and it’s to do with things like animation compression, generalised compression and rendering optimisations. These guys are really old-school programmers: guys who are always looking to shave another cycle off an operation. And part of the skill of developing for the PlayStation 3 is getting the GPU to farm jobs out to the six SPUs – seeing which SPUs are idling and can take up some of the slack in a frame-to-frame kind of way.”
Here, Lemarchand comes up with an interesting revelation: “That’s why we think we’re probably only using 30 or 40 per cent of the power of the PS3 right now, and there’s this great, untapped potential. All third-party developers can get the Edge libraries for free and are going to be able to use them in their own ways, to get more and more and more out of the PS3 over the years.”
Lemarchand also waxes lyrical about the culture of cooperation that exists between first-party Sony Studios: “We have this culture of open communication: we like to trade stories about what we found were ways of doing things that worked, and what didn’t. We’re always trading war-stories with Insomniac and Evolution and Sucker Punch. We’re just one block away from Sony Santa Monica – the guys who made God Of War – and we get our designers together with theirs for formal lunches, and just talk about tools, design approaches and so on. So there’s this town square feeling of everybody trading stories about our best practices, and I think it makes everybody stronger and smarter.”

Thanks for the details, Steve.
Great timing from Naughty Dog… just as the Platinum/Greatest Hits release hit the shelves, erm, last week.
I never took to “Super Stardust HD”, so I’m glad another title is now making use of the recent firmware update(s).
If only “Soul Calibur IV” had shipped with Trophy support…

Great interview Steve. Yes, I’m very interested in trophies at the moment. Last night I got up to 20% (I think) in my trophy progress in uncharted. I thought it would be a pain having to play through the game again but in doing so I have rediscovered this gem of a game and am really enjoying playing it again. When I look at my save game I notice that I’ve only spent 7 hours playing this game in the past, in total - I completed it only on normal difficulty. Since then it’s been shelved next to Folklore and a handfull of other games that haven’t had much of a look in. So collecting the trophies is going to give me a lot more value out of the game. Gawd knows how I’m going to get the trophy for completing the game on “crushing” level though!
I agree with Lemarchand that Naughty Dog were ahead of the game in terms of their “medal” concept. However, collecting “medals” wasn’t enticing enough to play through the game more than once. There’s something more appealing about trophies - perhaps it’s being able to track my friends’ progress in collecting them as well as my own. Also, when I’m stuck on a particular trophy it’s easy to see which of my friends have it so I know who to ask for help in grabbing it.
I’m also intrigued by the in-house tools he talked about that were in development - Edge. “in the near future, multi-platform PS3 games will outshine the versions running on rival consoles” - This would good. At the moment certain multi-platform titles look and play a lot better on the 360 which must be embarrassing for Sony. I think that if just a couple of the teams of developers of multi-platform titles are able to make the PS3 versions look the best then it will set the bar. Perhaps after this, Electronic Arts would no longer get away with releasing their shoddy 360 ports as PS3 titles.

It’s the ol’s chestnut of having differening hardware and specs….
one has a bigger optical disk…one has a more uniform “pc” like architecutre…one has a harddrive for caching…one has better online support and on and on and on.
One game looks better on one, one game looks better on another yadeadadada - play what’s fun…that’s all i’m about

…or even, play what you enjoy playing on whatever platform you wish and sod everybody else’s opinion!
That said, “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune” still looks good & deserves more people to play it.
The shelf price has remained high since the original release, but with the introduction of the Greatest Hits/Platinum series pricing, coupled with the introduction of the support for Trophies (that, if I’m honest, I couldn’t care less about Trophies/Medals &/or Achievements… sorry Sony/Microsoft!) it should hopefully allow a new audience or a renewed audience to appreciate it.
If you could share ’saved game’ content from your hard drive to somebody in your Friends list, or view their console output across a Virtual Network Computing (VNC) feature (or similar) so you can either advise on their in-game antics or even take-over the game-play using your own local controller, then that would be a feature worth having!
Watch this (cyber)space…

Thing is with all the major new games being multiplatform, they wil be designed with the lower or simpler spec in mind, which means basically very few games will use the full potential of the machine.

Starting the game locks up, deleting the patch data causes the patch to show up again but then lock. Dead game! Anyone else got a problem with this, am I right that this is because of the promo disc? Seems likely

Rocketboom Inks Seven-Figure Distribution Deal With Sony
Erick Schonfeld
TechCrunch.com
Tuesday, August 5, 2008; 5:40 AM
Rocketboom, the daily video blog, is turning over its distribution and ad sales to Sony Pictures Television in return for a seven-figure guarantee plus a share of revenues. Rocketboom will be distributed on Sony’s Crackle video site, as well as across other Sony platforms such as the PS3, PSP, and Bravia I-Link TVs.
Rocketboom founder Andrew Baron says he went with Sony because of Sony’s distribution strengths and the deal allows him to maintain control of the business. (Whereas selling the business to another media buyer, such as WallStrip did to CBS a year ago for $5 million, would have required him to give up his baby). The deal is structured as a distribution and advertising deal, and sounds like it could lead to a closer relationship or outright sale if things go well. But if they don’t, Rocketboom would regain complete control of distribution and ad sales after the contract expires.
Rocketboom’s current distribution through YouTube, iTunes, Tivo, and elsewhere will remain intact. Sony will sell ads across those distribution channels as well. Baron claims more than Rocketboom is watched more than one million times a month across all channels, and sometimes spike to several million views. But as one of the first Web video shows, Rocketboom has always been better at creating videos than at selling ads.
By aligning with a major media company, Rocketboom will be able to expand its reach and Baron will be able to take some money off the table. But Rocketboom will now be seen as a Sony property for all intents and purposes. That is not necessarily a bad thing. For instance, Crackle is finally starting to see some growth after going nowhere for a long time. Since April, according to comScore, unique U.S. visitors to Crackle.com has tripled to 3.7 million (compared to 4.5 million U.S. visitors to Veoh.com).
The deal does raise the question, though, of whether Web video startups can thrive as independent entities or require the distribution muscle of a major media company to go mainstream.
Update: In a blog post about the deal, Andrew Baron explains that one reason he went with Sony is that previous ad partnerships with smaller companies didn’t work:
We tried start-up ad companies like Federated Media and blip.tv and refused to go exclusive with anyone for a long term without some kind of guarantee. And no one was ready because no one could sell out our inventory across all of our platforms (e.g. our own video formats plus videos on You-Tube and TiVo, etc.). It tends to require managing multiple accounts and methods and no one has been able to handle selling ads across all of our platforms except us.
He also blames a lawsuit with former Rocketboom anchor Amanda Congdon for tying up the company for two years. While other Web video startups, such as Revison3 and Next New Networks, raised tens of millions of dollars, Rocketboom was “frozen like ice” by the courts.

@Marius - Nope. Read the article more carefully - “Unfortunately, you won’t be able to convert your existing Uncharted Medals into Trophies”. No games allow you to convert existing achievements into trophies. The reason for this is because Sony don’t want people to be able to cheat at obtaining trophies by swapping game-shares with their dirty cheating pals (as is possible on the XBOX 360).

30 to 40% ?? and when are we going to see this “untapped power” ? it sounds to me like human brain, we can use about 10% of it and no one (or at least really few people) is able to use it at it’s full potential. Is that going to happen with the PS3 ?? Or we will see really good games at the end of the 10 year-life span ??
