Three Speech puts some questions to Ray Maguire, SCE’s UK managing director…
Alas, we didn’t make it out to E3. So we thought we’d catch up with Sony Computer Entertainment’s UK managing director, Ray Maguire, in order to find out what he made of it. This is what he said:
Q: What interesting stuff came out of Sony’s press conference at E3, Ray?
Ray Maguire: Jack Tretton, in some detail, showed how the PlayStation franchise is operating on a series of ten-year cycles. He showed the PlayStation operated for ten years, and how the PS2 is still alive and well, albeit in different territories at this point.
The gamble that Ken Kutaragi took with the PlayStation 3 was to put in a high level of technology, so it has been a bit slow to market in some respects, but we’re now seeing how people are starting to understand how the technology works.
Historically, the installed base of any hardware platform has been proportional to its great gameplay, but also very attached to the RRP. That was the second part of Kutaragi-san’s gamble, as that hardware made the machine more expensive. But now we’re in the second part of the PS3’s cycle, and since the price came down, there has clearly been an uplift.
We’ll go through the next part of the year without a price-reduction, but we’re committed to introducing the 80Gb PS3 here on August 29, and the £299 price-point remains. That’s why we’re short of stock at the moment – production of the 40Gb PS3 has stopped.
Q: How important is this hard disk issue?
RM: We’re also starting to get to grips with the online side: we’re seeing better content, films and larger games on the download side. And for heavy users, there’s always the ability to replace the hard disk – you can even get 500Gb ones.
And we’re also seeing how easy it is to stream data to the PS3 – for example, I don’t hold pictures on my PS3, but I stream them to it now. On the hard disk side, there will be various options to play with as the cost comes down.
Then we’ve just launched GoView! On the PSP: we’d encourage everyone to go on there for one month’s free trial. We’ve already got some great studios on board. I think we are living up to our multimedia credentials. We said right from the start that we would have a device for playing HD movies, and now we’re taking on downloadable content.
Q: What games stood out at E3?
RM: When Jack Tretton went through his figures, he did it using Sackboy on a skateboard, to show that anyone can create content in LittleBigPlanet, even if it’s based on dull figures.
Q: Oh dear: now that the boss has started to do presentations in LBP, does that mean everyone else will have to follow suit?
RM: Maybe I’ll have to do them in SingStar. Or perhaps in mime.
Q: Presumably you’ll be backing LittleBigPlanet with a big marketing campaign?
RM: There will be some splashy stuff – Sony will spend across quite a few titles. It will be a bumper end of the year/start to next year, with LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm: Pacific Drift and Resistance 2, followed by Killzone 2.
Q: What about the previously unseen PS3 games that emerged at E3, such as God Of War III, Infamous, DC Universe and MAG?
RM: Nothing much was shown at the press conference, although some were there behind closed doors. I’ve seen them, but I don’t think we’ll even show them at the Games Convention in Leipzig.
Q: No more news about when PlayStation Home will go live?
RM: Not at the moment. But you might want to see if we do anything at the Games Convention in Leipzig.
Q: So, as a show, what was the new-format E3 like?
RM: I think we felt that E3 suffered by not having that grandeur and the theatrical shows that demonstrate this is a business that generates billions of Euros. It was more like a convention for plumbers. But behind closed doors, there was a decent amount of business going on. Games are still doing record numbers in terms of turnover, and the amount of people getting into gaming is growing.
Q: There was a bit of a shock when it emerged that Final Fantasy XIII won’t be a PlayStation 3 exclusive.
RM: For publishers, increasingly, the only way forward is to have multiple platform strategies. What’s more important is the development cycle going forward. We have three platforms that vary in their technical ability. You can develop for the top-end, then dumb games down for the other titles. What we will see in those titles is exclusivity in terms of functionality.

You know what would be good?
If Sony could put some simple NAS software into their next PS3 firmware and produce an add-on (or give that work to third party peripheral makers) that simply holds a couple of large HDDs.
Even cheaper could be to sell it with one, with room for expansion to a second.
Acting as a NAS device, via the PS3, it can become a central hub for the PS3 media, one’s MP3 player, PCs and so on.
I know this can be done with Linux on a cheap PC right now, but the above solution would introduce NAS to the masses that have PS3 and complain about HDD sizes being small.
Personally, Ithink 80GB is an insult, considering you can pick up an X360 that has a 120GB HDD for the same price and with a better software collection and better on-line network.
Comment by Zed Zee — Jul 31, 2008 @ 3:45 pm
Hang on, ThreeSpeech, what do you mean you didn’t make it to E3?! You’re Sony’s voice and vice versa, aren’t you? Or have the contractual conditions changed? Was the budget really that crap?!
I agree with all the above, next time, ask one question only…I don’t think I need to repeat it for you!!
Comment by Zed Zee — Jul 31, 2008 @ 3:47 pm
Threespeech,
You have a voluminous amount of questions which need asked and are asked on here on an almost daily basis.
Your tepid and frankly sycophantic questions are ridiculous, research the comments we leave and ask proper questions. You do this every time you get an interview with a senior SCEE/Sony figure.
Threespeech example question:
“Mr. x, you are so great and SCEE are doing such a great job, how much more great do you think you can be? and how much greater can gamers expect things to get?”.
Utter drivel from a bunch of fawning parasites, I’m not kidding you.
Comment by Ton Capone — Jul 31, 2008 @ 3:55 pm
Dull questions, dull answers! Why don’t you ever ask the questions TS readers constantly want answering? Like the PSN store delays, the PSN store price increase, SCEE’s lack of internet presence/fan feedback compared to SCEA etc.
That “interview” was so tame I wouldn’t be surprised if the guy wrote the questions himself and just posted you the document to upload!
Next time you’re sitting down with a big Sony bod, why not try asking for input before hand? I’m sure people will be all too willing to post their suggested questions!

“Personally, I think 80GB is an insult, considering you can pick up an X360 that has a 120GB HDD for the same price and with a better software collection and better on-line network.”
That was a joke right?
Let me see you go into your local Game store and buy the following 360 bundle of accessories:
Elite Console
Gold Subscription
Wi-Fi Network
HD-DVD player (as the only alternative to it’s lack of Blu-ray)
Rechargeable Controller kit
Because the above is what you need for the Elite to come closer to competing with the features of a PS3! To say the stand-alone Elite at the same price as the 80GB PS3 is better value is frankly quite ridiculous!
Is it me or do you come here to troll with pro-360/anti-PS3 garbage in every single post you make?!!!
If you find it that much of an insult spend £30 and get a 120GB SATA drive for your PS3, or spend a bit more and get one significantly larger. If you want to talk about insults, talk to Core/Arcade 360 owners who are FORCED to pay obscene prices if they want to have an HDD - i.e. £70 for 20GB or £130 for the 120GB!
When you have to pay the same price for a 120GB HDD upgrade as people with a PS3 can pay for a 500GB HDD upgrade - then you can be insulted!
Comment by Apnomis — Jul 31, 2008 @ 4:22 pm
@ Apnomis - you don’t need wi-fi, my ps3 is hardwired into the router for a more stable connection, why would you ever use ‘remote play’ if you’re in the same house as your ps3 anyway?, HD-DVD? i’ve only ever watched one blu-ray on my PS3 so that’s a no neeeeeeed too for a gamer, an xbox j-pad with usb rechargeable pack (6.28
) is CHEAPER than a standard Sony joypad. i have my own one for playing on my friends 360.
to be honest i’ve been looking at getting a 360 Elite myself due to lack of DECENT RPGs on the PS3.

“We are a PAL market and we are going to do it in PAL and we are going to do it properly, you can wait for it and you can have it in good quality, you know you can get the stuff from Bittorrent if you want to and download PSP games, it’s up to you.”

Your post at #8 is a fine example of a sneering, disrespectful, arrogant, condescending, immature and obnoxious little spoilt brat at his most self-absorbed.

Every time I come here there you are, acting like you own the place and we should all rest at your feet while you strut around, pontificating, and insulting your hosts. Why don’t you just FO somewhere else? Perhaps to an XBox fansite?
Seriously TS, ban this child.
Comment by Sarah — Aug 1, 2008 @ 1:22 am
@Mobiletone,
Another petulant child I see. We can all play the “let’s choose some arbitrary data and skew it to prove our own pointless opinion” game. You know full well you misrepresented the true cost of the 360 experience equivalent to the PS3 (well, as near as it can get), and the fact that in four weeks the 80GB PS3 will replace the 40GB with no increase in RRP.
Here’s my turn in the game!
With Amazon UK discounts from RRP…….
XBox Elite: £250.00
Rechargeable battery: £8.50
Gold Live subscription: £35.00 (12 months)
TOTAL: £293.50 + £35 every additional year of ownership (let’s be generous and say just five years even though it will probably me more: that’s a total of £433.50)
PS3 40GB: £285
TOTAL: £285
PS3 80GB: £300 RRP (likely to be discounted to £290)
TOTAL: £300 (or £290)
Now here’s the rub……that extra overall cost for the 360 owner: how big a 2.5″ SATA drive do you think that £130+ could buy? 320GB? Yep! And you’d still have £70 left over for two extra games or perhaps a PS Eye, an extra DS3 and a couple or three PSN downloads!
Nuff said?

@ Sarah - jeeez, you got the painters in or something? i was actually pointing out that there’s nothing in it between buying a ps3 or an x360. and you resort to childish name calling and flaiing of arms around the place.
with the Elite you get a wireless controller, headset, hdmi cable and free silver membership, you only need gold if you want to play games online, all the other XBL features are available, which, if someone was buying one for (j)RPG etc wouldn’t need online gaming. personally i don’t play online much on my PS3 anyway, the experience is always sub-standard and the SCEE Store isn’t even worth mentioning.
sure they’re bringing the 80Gb PS3 out in 4 weeks, with no BC, only 2 usb ports, no memorycard reader etc. AND it’s still 40Gb light of the Elite and more expensive.
for the record i have a launch day upgraded to 250gb ps3, eye, external drive/keyboard/mouse/dualshocks (bought on import months ago) and i enjoy owning it, but as the months pass and we comsumers put up with more and more jerking around by Sony i see myself looking for other systems and the only system out there that gives as good a gaming experience as the PS3 for the bucks is the 360Elite.
the games look the same, play the same, the only difference is each console has, as it has been mentioned, it’s own pros and cons.
maybe if Sony treated us all a bit better we wouldn’t be up in arms on this blog everyweek ranting at them.
most of us will and do give credit were credits due, but lately Sony has lost the plot. they are trying to turn what was a damn good gaming machine into everything and at the same time nothing.
it will NEVER be world beating like the PS2 was!

mobiletone is here week in week out making positive and negative comments on all manner of topics relating to Sony. You on the other hand have came up from nowhere calling people names because they have an opinion different to yours.
simple fact of the matter is that allot of people here including myself are growing increasing impatient with the treatment and lack of transparency that Sony is showing us especially in the EU region.
Furthermore you say to Capone “FO somewhere else?” well my love you will find an equal amount of moaning on any other ps3 blog as I am a member of a few and they are all the same.

@ Apnomis (10):
Elite Console >> Yes, please!
Gold Subscription >> Don’t need it, not everyone is desperate to get on-line. I have a PS2 and PSP, never had the urge to get them on-line or anything multiplayer related.
Wi-Fi Network >> As above answer. Don’t need it.
HD-DVD player (as the only alternative to it’s lack of Blu-ray) >> My PS2 is my DVD player, don’t need HD-DVD or BR. Don’t have infrastructure for Hi-Def, like the majority of people.
Rechargeable Controller kit >> What does that do? Is it for lazy people that can’t be bothered to plug their controller into a cable?
“Is it me or do you come here to troll with pro-360/anti-PS3 garbage in every single post you make?!!!” >> I won’t entertain that with an answer - don’t want to stoop down to your level - but I will say I state either opinions or well-known facts…everytime.
“Core/Arcade 360 owners who are FORCED to pay obscene prices…” >> They don’t need to pay nothing. There’s nothing wrong with a memory card. I shan’t go into the PS3’s model blunders, because I think they’re well known now.
Quite frankly, I find your posts that are the most insulting thing. Way above anything Sony can achieve.
@ Sarah (17):
If you can’t reply intelligently, then no one is going to take you seriously. Mobiletone is a long-time suffering PS3 owner. There’s no need to insult him personally. It’s not something you’d say to someone you don’t know on the street and it shouldn’t be acceptable here either. This is a blog for fans and counter arguments/debates.
He bought his PS3 on release day (or at least paid the huge £425 that Sony were asking at the time) and he’s frustrated, like I’m sure many other people who post on here are, at pretty much the way that Sony has ‘handled’ (or lack of) this third generation’s launch, pricing, availability, models, specification, backwards incompatibility, favouritism of territories and the shambles that is PSN.
He is entitled to his opinion and to scream at Sony, because he actually likes PlayStation as a brand and is probably loyal to it, like I am (I don’t have and never have owned a Nintendo or MS console - despite what some people on here might believe), but is disagreeing with the way Sony has marketed the PS3.
You really only need to see Sony’s position in the market this time around to appreciate that they’ve not done a good job.
He’s right, “it will NEVER be world beating like the PS2 was!”
Definitely enough said.

…what he said
[@26] (mobiletone):
‘tone: “maybe if Sony treated us all a bit better we wouldn’t be up in arms on this blog everyweek ranting at them.”
If you have an Xbox 360, and jump to a Wii, will you have any arms left?
Look at the tats on that, etc.
As for ranting… I think the problem with Sony is that nobody knows what the game-plan is, or was.
We get conflicting information about how easy the platform is to develop for, but then delays due to developers not understanding the Cell architecture.
We have beta programmes more than 12 months before a product is looking like being released fully, and we are constantly confused why a global product cannot offer a global infrastructure.
The competing consoles have a much easier product to understand; one manufacturer has 3 models (well, four; one model has two different hard drive capacities), and the other manufacturer has had just one console configuration to date.
The PS3 has had machines that have hardware-driven backward compatibility, software-emulated backward compatibility, small, medium, and larger drive capacities, starter packs with bundled games & an extra controller, and combinations thereof with different exterior casings (colour, trim, and on-board features).
Is it any wonder people get annoyed? How is anyone interesting in buying a video games console supposed to understand what to buy if prices & features are seemingly always being re-aligned?
And the other manufacturers release their machines worldwide (although one of them famously cannot meet demand… or so they say… clever marketing that!), but Sony choose a wide range of release dates across the globe with some countries not seeing a release until 9 months after Japan, and another country is still waiting for a local release almost 21 months later!
Consoles these days are considered essential gadgets as they do so much more than just play games. Why have a CD player, a DVD player, a VCR recorder, an Internet browser, an e-mail client, a telephone system, and last, but not least, a games console under your TV when a shiny dust magnet resembling a George Foreman grill will do everything? Well, when it fails due to excessive usage you will realise that having separate household electrical items does make sense as then you are not completely cut-off from civilisation because you had to throw out all the telephone directories to make space for your Blu-ray collection. (How many of you have a combined Facsimile/Photocopier/Printer only to have to throw two of the three uses away when one stops working?) But then you can always use your wirelessly-connected gadget that is sometimes used to make telephone calls, but is now used to stream radio broadcasts, or take photographs on the internal camera that is more advanced than the full-sized one you bought just last year, whilst you catch-up on the latest news from all your virtual “MyFaceTwitterBeboBookSpace” pals.
Competition between manufactures will help the industry along in the long-term, but some us just want to play games on our video games console.
Surely that is not too much to ask, is it?
No wonder the PS2 is still selling well. It does the job, and it does it very well.
Lessons could be learned, if only somebody would listen.
BFN,
fp.

Maybe if Capone et al didn’t post such rude, arrogant and condescending comments, and learnt some civility, people like Sarah wouldn’t have to break their silence and respond with some “brutal honesty” of their own. Get it?
Oh, and for those of you foolish enought to think it, believe it or not there are literally thousands of people who read this site every day who very rarely - if ever - choose to post comments. Me included. Does that make our views any less valid for it? If you think yes, you’ve proved half of Sarah’s accusations true. If you think no, then don’t be a hypocrite (see below).
(Oh, and some of the comments directed in response to Sarah were extremely prejudiced, sexist and chauvanistic. No wonder most female gamers find the landscape so offensive and childish. I’m looking at you Capone and Mobiletone. Bulimia and menstrual stress attacks? What are you, twelve?)
And I didn’t see anyone complain about the offensive remarks directed at the TS bloggers: if you had, I might respect your position vis-a-vis Sarah. But you didn’t. All of a sudden, now you have been the target, you have moral principles; where were they before last evening? What does that say about you? Precious much?

I’m with Sarah. I’m sick of the attitude of many commenters on this site. If you don’t like it, why do you put so much effort into commenting here every day? There are plenty of other PS3 sites which - according to you at least - are better at this sort of thing. I really couldn’t care less what you own, how much you paid for it or whatever. If you don’t like it, go elsewhere.
It’s time TS introduced an account system so the trolls and frustrated teens angry at Mom, Dad the World and Everything Else can be banned.
PS From what I can see, Sarah’s complaint about Mobiletone was that he used very arbitrary information to prove a point. Nowhere did she say he was not permitted to be annoyed at Sony or be concerned about his investment. So try reading and understanding a comment before you criticise it.

for me the snes was the best!! still have it, still play it.
super tennis gets played everytime my mates are round, best tennis game ever made imo.
not to mention bomberman, streetfighter turbo, mario kart, they were and still are classic games!
Comment by manley — Aug 1, 2008 @ 4:46 pm
Smash Court Tennis on the PS1 (the 2D version) was better than Super Tennis (and I love Super Tennis).

Mobiletone, are you serious? Complaining that the PS3, which has more features than an XBox, is not as cheap as a 360 is like complaining that an Audi A3 is not as cheap as a Ford Focus. Both do what you really want in such a thing: they transport you from A to B. But one does so with better build quality, style, longevity and resilience, and has a few luxuries that no-one must have but many are happy to pay for and like having.
And don’t think you can slap me down as someone with no right to comment. I queud and bought a 60GB PS3 on release too, now have two PS3s: the 60GB is in my games room, and a 40GB with a 320GB SATA dropped in is in my lounge mainly (but not only) used for Blu-ray and awaiting PlayTV; and I have been reading TS from day one. I just rarely feel the need to engage in debate with those who rule this place like a personal fiefdom. But, when I do have cause to moan and complain about this place and about Sony Computer Entertainment in general, I DO SO POLITELY AND CONSTRUCTIVELY.

@ T3rrortime - sweet, i had an Amiga CD32+SX-1 with internal HD sold it about a year ago and made an absolute mint!
@ Obli - i already have a 3×6 based design, so the world is safe from me getting an xbox tattoo *smirks* i think a ‘Piswasser’ one would rock though!
@ Steve - yes *puts on serious hat* i am serious. you can put a flag in a turd but it doesn’t make it a sandcastle does it? from a purely gamer PoV 360/PS3.. it makes no difference. just depends what exclusive titles you want. i have a PSP but never feel the need to use remote play, stream video while i sit at work, or use any of the other pointless features the ps3 has. PlayTV? c’mon £79.99! for £10 less i can walk to the shop now and get a standalone freeview unit with 80Gb inbuilt.
@ all the thousands of people reading this and never posting - TOURISTS! all us regular TS posters have made this community what it is, without us it would be nothing but a sterile stream of PR output from Sonys overpaid management team. sure the TS team put some effort into trying to make the posts work, but lately i get the feeling that even they have given up and are just running the clock out until they can offload the project to someone else.
SO, we may be edgey and shout and joke around and have pointless arguements, but it’s all in good spirits really. at heart we all love the Playstation and hate to see it abused by Sonys bizarre decisions sometimes. we play rough, we play using our own rules, we are a collective of like minds and to have ‘outsiders’ to this group jump in and start insulting us because they don’t like what we write in our comments is a bit rich seeing as we never (hardly) openly insult other commenters.
we are the core demographic like.no.other

Exclusive games are the only way to push the PS3 to the top. See what FF7, Tekken, Crash, GranTurismo, GTA, Resident evil etc.. did to rhe PS2 !!!
Then if developers make the effort to create exclusive games for PS3, their experience on the platform will be rewarded when the PS3 becomes more successful.
Sorry for the bad english, I hope you understand my point.

One of the [normally] silent majority here.
What is wrong with you people? You just don’t get it, do you? It really is very simple: no-one is denying your right to complain nor indeed is anyone denying the validity of your complaints in this comment string! The problem is that many of your comments are filled with such obnoxious and - I’ll repeat what others have accurately said - condescending rudeness! Then, when someone loses their temper over your attitude and dares return some salvos your way, you act like poor little victims and moan about someone being horrible and rude about you! WTF?!
What you are in fact saying is that you reserve the right to be as rude and patronising as you wish to your hosts, but if anyone DARES call you on it, you’ll act all affronted and offended and start complaining about bad manners and hurtful words. Diddums; listen to yourselves.
Well here’s my take: a lot of you are a bunch of jumped-up hypocrites.
“Why don’t you FO and find a nuerotic eating disorder to indulge in?”
“jeeez, you got the painters in or something?”
Way to prove Sarah’s point when complaining about HER attitude. Acting like a couple of male-chauvansitic spoilt brats much? Your mothers must be SO proud.

if there is 1 thing which SCEE of SCEUK should do is drop the magicpricepoint system, the always use..
if a game is 4.99$ in the US don’t make it 7.99€
if a game in the uk can be bought for 20€ (play.com platinum pss3),don’t make it 29,99€ for the rest of europe
@silvo, you name exactly a couple of games for which the customer don’t have to own a ps3, if they had already a 360,GTA,resident evil, final fantasy,
3x millionsellers of which the PS3 has lost it.
luckely there are currently more developers complaining about the techincal boundries of the X360,like drivespace, optical storage-space
to hopefully give ps3 the leading edge back,
to allow SCEE not to completely empty their moneypit called EU
like phil harrison said “the EU is the most important region in the world”
SCEWW should start showing that to us by firing the SCEE-lazy asses

@Most of the posts in this thread…
*Firstly:
I would like to put my reason for posting on here in context,
I was a long time “lurker” but kept coming back to read the comments as they were far more entertaining than the blog itself, but the lack of demo on Echochrome and delay and price was the final straw and I had to speak out…
And now my silence has broken, I found it far more rewarding to post and “join in” with the regular posters, I admit I think I may have been a little over enthusiast, but I was tying to make up for lost time.
And feel that I am no longer a “tourist” and I agree with mobiletones sentiment that the reg posters make threespeech what it is…
*Secondly:
Sarah felt the need to speak out, I don’t with agree with everything she said, but I also disagree with the sexist retorts.
I personally feel sexism is almost akin to racism, the former I have dealt with most of my life, both stem from some form of ignorance.
There is a big difference between banter and insult & I think think you guys were stepping over the line, that said I am also painfully aware most guys are not as free thinking as me.
The irony is apart from my pro-feminist views & distain of fussball im a total Alpha male..
RAHAaaaaa *flexes biceps*
Which results in most women thinking I am taking the “P” when I express my views in the real 3D meatbag world, so I have felt the sting of the double edged sword of sexism.
(But Im digressing and rambling slightly)
*Thirdly:
I have posted Dave Reeves email and phone number on here several times in a attempt to get voices heard, the email can be found via a little googling…
It would be far more productive to use it than posting on here week in and week out.
That said, it is human nature to bitch
(even for males)
*Finally:
My current games set-up is
A TV with the “Hud”
Dreamcast via vga,
Ps2 slim via component
Xbox 1 (cystal) via component
Wii via component
Xbox Elite via HDMI
Ps3 40Gb (Upgraded to 120Gb) via HDMI
& kicking around the house in cupboards/loft
An Atari (I think 500)
Commodore 64
Snes
Gamecube
Sold my much loved Megadrive + Mega CD and Saturn collection on Ebay few month back

We want PS3 gamers to compete with XBox360 Gamers !
Why not make a connexion between Live and Sony servers ? that would be good !
Or Users hosting servers, and game developers allowing different platforms to compete !!!
Comment by Silvio6 — Aug 2, 2008 @ 10:25 am
@mobiletone - Your argument that Sony is trying to make the console everything and nothing at the same time is just silly. Their focus is definitely on games, maybe not necessarily the particular games you’re interested in, but you look at the line up for the next 6 months or so and it’s just plain awesome. Also just because you don’t use certain features, doesn’t mean that other people don’t. I certainly use the Remote Play feature to kick off my store downloads remotely and think it’s pretty handy to have. This “purely gamer PoV” you spoke about is somewhat narrow minded, there’s no such thing anymore. You’re trying to treat the PS3 as if it isn’t allowed to do anything else as that somehow takes away from the gaming side of it.
Oh and if you’re not interested in Home, then don’t use it, complaining about it as if it being done is some kind of offence to you isn’t exactly very productive now. I’m certainly interested in it, but then again I’m already using it!

Looks like my epic post never made it past the censor-bot, feel that it might have been “too long” rather than anything un-toward in it.
The jist was 4 things:
1: Im finding posting rather than being a “lurker” far more rewarding….
2: You guys should have not responded in such a sexist manner that was not on…
3:I’ve posted Dave Reeves email on here a few times use it! easy to find with a bit of googling, and more productive than “only” moaning on here…
4:My current gaming setup is:
A tv with the HUD
Dreamcast via VGA
Ps2 (Slim) via Component
Xbox 1 (Cystal) via Component
Wii via Component
Xbox 360 Elite via HDMI
Ps3 40Gb (upgraded to 120Gb) via HDMI
My original post expanded on those 4 points, & sorry for double posting if censor-bot spits the original post back out…

I said it before but this time it is definate.
After nearly 18 months struggle for better treatment and service I am retiring from posting from all forums etc. I do not have the stomach for the fight anymore, Sony/SCEE are not and never have been listening.
So Vincent and Sarah, you have won. I hope you are happy with the PS3 exactly the way it is because that is how it will undoubtedly stay.
Mr.Monkey, I got an e-mail from Reeves saying he was looking into my various complaints but I won’t be holding my breath.
I will still keep my finger on the pulse of Threespeech but won’t post.
So to Mr. Monkey, TheDragonrider, Zed Zee, mobiletone, terrortime, manley, fanpages, apnomis, shrui and others keep the pressure on them brothers and sisters.
We have made a small difference in our time what with in game XMB and custom soundtracks albeit they don’t function as everyone wanted but we affected a little change.
If some of you leave your PSN IDs we could maybe meet up on COD4 from time to time.
Don’t judge me too harshly, I was only trying to help the PS3 be all it can be.
Comment by Ton Capone — Aug 2, 2008 @ 1:15 pm
“there’s no such thing anymore. You’re trying to treat the PS3 as if it isn’t allowed to do anything else ”
no such thing? well i am purely a gamer. i use my consoles for playing games on. i don’t want to watch tv on it via an overpriced usb add-on, a pc dvb usb stick costs 20 quid and does exactly the same job, so where sony gets off charging 80 for their version i don’t know, you can buy a standalone unit cheaper too with in-build HD!
same goes for the GPS/camera/skype thing for the PSP (can buy better cheaper better units off the shelf). Remote play is only just about good for accessing the store, streaming video/playing games on public wi-fi is a horrible choppy experience. and no, my upstream speed from the ps3 is fine thank you.
sony don’t know what people want from the PS3, they think we all want it to be this amazing stand-alone media hub sitting under our tvs, that we can store all out music, photos, video on, send MSG’s on, make video calls from, surf the net with etc etc.. but i’m guessing nearly all of us have dedicated stereos, phones, computers, dvd players etc etc that all do the job better than the half arsed implemented stuff they keep coming up with for the PS3.
and what Sony developed games are coming out then? it’s the 3rd parties propping up the console at the moment and most of them develop titles for the other console first. let me just check my release list… Elefunk, PixelJunk Eden, LBP.. well yes, OUTSTANDING contribution to gaming there sony.
well, good for you being on the Home beta, i’m sure your life is complete now, i’ll have to be sure to avoid that cloud of smug we they bother to let the public in. my issue with it is it’s being hailed as this wonderful new thing where in reality it’s been done over and over before already. it’s old news, has been in development way too long and adds nothing to the gaming experience.
Home is no use to a sociopathic gamer like myself

I would love to see that too, but with Live being mostly Peer to Peer based (I believe) and PSN being server based, it will not likely ever happen…
That said there is the odd few cross-over titles with Games for Windows on PC & 360,
but its a bit pap, also the balance between keyboard and Mousers and the Joypaders is too wide…

3- Dave Reeves couldn’t give a toss for your emails.
@ Ton Capone -
i know how you feel mate, i think i’ll go back to using my ps3 like i did with my ps2, ignore all the websites and forums and just buy games when they turn-up on the shops shelves instead of being tagged along with month after month of hype, delays and broken promises from Sony. i’ll expect NOTHING from future firmware updates and pay over the odds for sony branded add-ons.
it’s been 18months since the UK launch, THIS was supposed to be the year of the PS3, 8 months in and we have nothing the other console doesn’t have!!

Have a feeling that Mr. Reeves is on his way out now anyway after his PSP Bit-torrent gaff…
Hopefully his successor will have some sense, being a multi-format user I have got used to a certain level of service, & Thus I can honestly with some authority…
SCEE really have treated us PAL gamers the worst, seconded by Nintendo.
Yes there is always differences between regions always will be (I even have a fake US account on LIVE)
But SCEE takes the cake and biscuit, there is something hilarious that some disgruntled Spanish gamers did to SCEE, they posted a big box of fake dog mess to SCEE head office (can’t find link again)
Their reasoning was that even with a language barrier, a boxful of plastic dog do, is more than enough to convey their message
(thats complaining while thinking out the box!)
I feel people would warm to you more if “every” post you make was not always full of P and Vinegar,
That said, I can totally see “why” you are tho, as I feel the same…

summer discounts, timely discounts for GranTourismo,Warhawk, from SCUS
and what does the SCEE
pricing platinum games for 29,99€ while they can be purchased from around the world for 20€ on other stores
1) promisses they don’t keep,
2) delayed releases
3) Lame excuses (translation is the common used,
while example given the demo/game in the US already contains exactly the same languages)
4) crap pricings, sometimes over 2.5 times expensiver than bought on the same machine ,only selecting a different region
5) de Boss David Reeves, stating that the pal region should download torrents
6) the boss Phil harrison stating the EU is the most important region
7) there is david Reeves again, stating Home is coming this autumn and what does that idiot Ray Mcguire state: no timing has been set.

So nobody else from Three speech made it to E3 either? Sometimes I wonder if the guys are met at the three rooms event I attended (18 months ago) are the same people behind three speech today. The guys I met seemed like they were totally on-the-ball; passionate about gaming and obviously had great connections to SCEE. These days we don’t see many snipets of exlusive PlayStation news here - that’s what attracted me to this blog in the first place. Many posts are now started with, “Sony got in touch with us and told us that…” before the contents of a press release is pasted in. No doubt Three Speech is one of hundreds of blogs to receive SCEE press releases and incidentally the news is usually published elsewhere before I read it here. So come clean Three Speech! - is it the same guys running the show as when you started this blog? How often do you actually get to TALK to SCEE? I also reiterate the request that others have made - please allow us readers to submit our own questions for SCEE representatives to answer the next time you have a chance to interview one.

I forgot Siren, Wipeout HD, Killzone 2, inFamous, SOCOM Confrontation and The Agency are all looking really bad and clearly aren’t made by Sony. While LittleBigPlanet isn’t developed by Sony, they did snap it up and it does look like it could be quite an important point in gaming. I’d still class myself as a hardcore gamer, but that doesn’t mean that my consoles aren’t allowed to do things other than play games. In much the same way as my PC can play games as well as browse the internet.
If you don’t want to use the features of the console that you don’t like, or buy the accessories you think are bad. Then don’t buy them, it’s as simple as that. You keep going on about being able to buy a cheap DVR or any other number of options, well then do that, Sony aren’t stopping you or forcing you to buy PlayTV.
In my case I probably will pick it up as my HDTV doesn’t have a digital tuner. Plus as you can pull the recorded shows off of the unit easily or use a PSP to view the shows, it suits what I need from it.
I’ve complained in the past, as you’ll be able to see if you so wish, about SCEE’s issues. Perhaps now is the time to be a bit more constructive and recognise that some of the problems they’re facing aren’t things that magically go away overnight.

Somebody needs to remind SCEE that we bought PLAYstations and that while it may other functions, PLAYING is what its about.

SURELY NOT?! You cannot ‘retire’ from this or indeed other forums, no!
Your voice, amongst a few others, has been of definite reason here and I don’t believe you should stop making it heard.
I can appreciate it can get tiring, but letting it go means losing to a big corporation, you’d be helping their arrogance to prevail.
You should carry on, Ton, with perhaps a bit of a break not being a bad idea…but definitely with the intention to return again! And we will be here, waiting, ready to support your opinion - like I said many others feels like you - and counter an argument intelligently, unlike some blind people on here.
Look up - there’s plenty of support from lots of posters for you and me (”manley”, “mobiletone”, “reakt”, “Mr Monkey”, “T3rrortime”, “fanpages” and of course, “JohnSketch”). We understand how you feel. We appreciate what you are saying but, no, you cannot retire!!
I’ve broken one of my own rules (when I put O&O at the end of a post on a blog item, it usually means I’m not returning) and posted another reply, because I feel it’s important enough, to urge you to reconsider, after a refreshing break…
