Hopefully Xbox’s Video download service paved the way for European rights issues, so fingers crossed it won’t take as long to get the PSN Video store working in Europe..
But then SCEE is in charge….. hmmmmm

I wasn’t expecting Wipeout HD this week, but I am starting to wonder why it seems to have dropped off the radar completely, with no mentions from Sony officials recently and not even a glimpse during the PSN highlights reel shown during the conference. Threespeech, can you try to get some information from your SCEE contacts?

Well done SCEE, at least you bother to put something up, theres NOTHING on the UK nintendo channel on the Wii…
BUT:
UK E3 section consists of 6 videos
US E3 section consists of 22 videos & 2 wallpapers
You could have at least bothered putting up the pre-rendered God of War 3 trailer on the PAL store SCEE
Can not load the movie section on my US account think it’s *Gasp* region locked!
(or maybe it just a place holder link)
Meanwhile on Ms LIVE only 2 videos, both for Americian Football, and 1 Demo are US only
Come on SCEE you have the rest of the day to upload some stuff so it’s “near” the amount of SCEAs
Also in case you missed my comment before, the reason why our stuff is now £6.99 not £4.99
is:
800 Ms Points = £6.80, $10

Ton C would not have a reason to moan
(or less reason)
If we had a similar level of service as the other Stores,
It’s the fact that Sony CAN provide a pretty good service, but choose not to operate at universal standard…
Sony are not the only company that has this regional digital download deficit, but are by far the worse offenders, seconded by Nintendo who only offer 50hz VC games but I digress…
Also coupled by the fact by how Sony has treated us in PAL regions in terms of hardware…
A 60 Gig machine delayed then price bumped and had reduced Backward compatibility…
(Also any patches to support BC have stopped)
No 20 Gig released (which would have arrived at a acceptable price range)
No 80 Gig released with SACD and 4 USBs and the same level of Backwards compatiblity as the PAL 60 gig
A 7-8 month delay and price bump for Dual shock 3
No solid news that the new 40gig with a 80 gig hard-drive (also bundled with a DS3) is even going to make it on our shores
All that AND a crap Pal store…
gives Ton all the reasons for him to moan
& also the reason why I bother to post instead of just “Lurking” like I normally do….
Comment by Mr. Monkey — Jul 16, 2008 @ 12:46 pm
Ton, have you thought of gettling a job at SCEE? (or a life). I can’t help but think that the world would be a much better place and how much better Sony would be run. For example: We’d have games released before they have been thought of, they would also be free, if we didn’t like them we would be compensated with loads of money and best of all you could stop posting. Just an idea.
(i’m having a bad day)

A handful of video’s worth looking at and a demo (Fatal Inertia) that I downloaded last week from the US ’store.
One thing that I liked about the E3 coverage over the last few years (when I still had an Xbox 360) was the daily updates while the event took place. Will Sony be so kind as to give us updates every day of the event? Oh, I hope so.
On a different, off-topic note: It’s sad news about the lose of Final Fantasy XIII as an exclusive, but given the lengthy production time and costs, it’s somewhat understandable of Square-Enix to go multi-plat with it. Also I read in a magazine (Games tm, the preview of Infinite Undiscovery) that Microsoft have 9 exclusives with Square-Enix lined up for 2008-2009. The 9 will likely aid hugely in Microsofts battle to attract the Japanese gamers, and giving FF XIII to a console that’s easier and cheaper (quicker) to produce on is safe, smart business.
Hasn’t Sony’s foot-hold in Japan always been it’s RPG’s?… ouch.
Comment by The-Unknown — Jul 16, 2008 @ 2:13 pm
Little Big PLanet - new trailer. Anyone know if this game is going to have a single player mode or whether its user content only?
Also - PAIN Amusement Park add on - do we have a date yet? The new video mentions online multiplayer which could be good fun.
Comment by beck — Jul 16, 2008 @ 2:25 pm
@beck
I may be mistaken, but it should have a limited amount of single player levels, designed as a tutorial so that you can get to grips with the game before going online.
Comment by The-Unknown — Jul 16, 2008 @ 2:38 pm
I do agree with many of the points brought up about the state of the European store. Quite frankly, I work (ehem!) for a well known international company with a wide variety of products and divisions, and it’s been my experience here, and in previous companies, that there is a single style for the customers to see. Font’s this way, layout that way. However, while the various PSN regions have some similarities, it’s the fff…flippin’ annoying differences that make all the difference. I like the US store best. First screen and I’m greeted with a “latest content” list on the right, so I can immediately see what’s new. The categories are neatly thought-out and arranged, the content is usually better timed (i.e. trailer first, then demo and some more trailers, then the full game later when we’re done salivating). This should be the template for the European store. If I could actually meet the guys involved in making this decision, I’d poke them rather roughly in the chest and politely ask them to get their act together. However, I suspect that perhaps they haven’t even got themselves a US account with which to investigate this. Curious.
Anyway, I’ve got the Warhawk download, but couldn’t log in, so will have to wait till after work to be the Hero. (I’m always the Hero in my games, but now it’ll be official, ha ha ha). Oh god I need a holiday!
Where IS Wipeout?
Also, seeing as we’re getting so much news about next years titles, what news is there of the real GT5, or even the update that I recall being mentioned for it?
Comment by LordOfRuin — Jul 16, 2008 @ 2:40 pm
@The-Unknown, yes Sony has lost a lot its Jrpgs and now seems to be “gunning” after the western market with shooters & a free roaming title…
While MS is going for the casual wii market, with avatars and wanting to make waves in Japan with a shed load of Jrpgs, all bases covered
(Also I am drowing in E3 trailers on LIVE at the mo, only 3 vids & 1 demo that are US only on there, take notes SCEE)
I myself not a Jrpg fan, the last one that really bewitched me was Skies of Arcadia on good old dreamcast, but the SEGA published Valyria Chronicles looks really good…
(trailer on US store)
Also I know FF13 is a big loss but FF13-Vs is PS3 only still? and If square have a character transfer option between the games then that will surely drive sales for both on the ps3??
(Dont really know anything about Vs, only speculating about character transfer, & if square do it you heard it from me 1st!)
Comment by Mr. Monkey — Jul 16, 2008 @ 2:42 pm
@The Monkey
Vs. is exclusive to PS3.
From what I read ages ago, the main difference between FF XIII and Vs. is the play style, where XIII is more traditional JRPG and Vs. is more action based. The combat for Vs. is supposed to be more like the combat seen in the Advent Children film, less turn-based and more fluid.
Maybe Square-Enix think that a traditional JRPG will sell well on both platforms in Japan, where as the Vs. style will suit EU and USA regions better.
Comment by The-Unknown — Jul 16, 2008 @ 3:07 pm
Thanks The-Unknown, I thought that may be the case and i think it is a shame. Not everybody has the creativity to design such levels. it might become boring quite quickly. I will probably still get the game though
Comment by beck — Jul 16, 2008 @ 3:17 pm
I know Square/E is losing a lot of cash at the mo and are in big trouble much like Capcom were back in the day before Resi-4 swooped in like Superman and saved the day…
So I totally see what they are aiming for with VS now, and your thoughts on them going multi-plat echo with mine, they need to make dev costs back up somehow…
also I am hearing that FF13 is not going to be on 360
in Jap, US & PAL only, but thats a rumor floating forums…
It’s most likely to be Noise and wishful thinking of Fanboys rather than actual Signal tho…
Comment by Mr. Monkey — Jul 16, 2008 @ 3:22 pm
@Unknown, FF13 hasn’t been announced for 360 in Japan only eu/us
Also there will be more updates to the store through the week, Siren and new MGO maps should be coming

I think you answered your own question from @20. I don’t think Sony developed the ‘Store just to spite you; I suspect there are a few people who fall into the criteria of owning a PSP, and a Windows-based PC, but with a PS3.
That said, some items are only available in the “Windows Store”; not everything is downloadable via the PS3 ‘Store front.
Java… ah yes, I remember that being quite popular back in the later 1990s. Isn’t everything Ajax (sometimes on Java server installations),Web 2.0, and dotNet clunky interfaces these days? That’s progress for you!

Personally I found “Gran Turismo Prologue” way too slow & have only played it once since I bought it (as I had to remove the mandatory hard drive installation to make way for the equally mandatory data for “Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Conspiracy”).
It is, unfortunately, a title for my “to be sold” pile, as I doubt I’ll have the inclination to load it again.
Anyone played “Ferrari Challenge”, btw? Have the online multiplayer issues been fixed?
And yes, “WipEout” looks like living up to its name. Will anybody care (anymore) if it does ever get a release?
“Elefunk” today… whoopee!

It was learned that the 80 gigabyte version of the PlayStation 3, which we discussed yesterday, also arrive in Europe. As it will cost $ 400 from September in the USA, logic would like it landed at 250 euros with us, the rate equivalent to the current price. But it is forgotten that manufacturers like to defy logic, much to the chagrin of European consumers. In fact, the 80 GB model should apply the same price as the 40 GB model (400 euros), it soon will replace stocks passed. The council of Uncle Edmond, is therefore to wait a bit before you buy the machine from Sony. Finally, after what my eyes detect lynx on the image-cons, this notorious pack will finally DualShock 3 long-awaited on the old continent.
Update: Sony confirms arrival of the 80GB model in Europe for August 27 at a cost of 399 euros.

E3: 80GB PS3, August 27, £299
Thursday 17-Jul-2008 9:44 AM SCEE dates Euro release of larger PS3
SCEE has confirmed that the 80GB PS3 will be launched in UK stores on August 27 for £299 - the same price as the current 40GB console.
“We have been listening to our customers and are pleased to be able to answer one of their key requests,” said David Reeves.
“There is more downloadable content than ever before, with the emphasis moving towards user generated content, something clearly seen this week in LittleBigPlanet. When you add this to the already compelling entertainment offering on PS3 … the extra storage becomes invaluable.”
Bigger hard drive aside, the new console will don the same feature set as the 40GB SKU, so no PS2 backwards compatibility. Soz.
Sony will phase out the 40GB model too, so don’t expect to see those at a reduced RRP. We’d say keep an eye on the second-hand shelves to pick up a bargain.

Sony confirms no PAL PS3 video service till 2009
Still, at least we have Sony’s PlayTV and Sky’s Go!View
Sony’s David Reeves announces no European PS3 download service till 2009
SCEE boss David Reeves confirmed this week that there will be no PAL PS3 video store launching until some yet-to-be-announced date in 2009
“This will not come to the PAL markets this year,” he told a Euro press conference in Santa Monica this week.
“But Sir Howard Stringer has made the commitment that non-game will come to all regions in due course and it will.
Local content, for local people
“The dates for video content will come later this year. For us, and I think you appreciate most of you Europeans, that local content is important, and that’s what working on right now.
Ah well, at least we have Sony’s PlayTV service to look forward to this year, in addition to Sky’s recently launched Go!View service for PSP.
We do have PlayTV to look forward to this year, don’t we Sony? Sony??

Well it’s kind of good news for anyone who has not jumped onto the Sony train yet, more room for those mandatory installs…
& i don’t think Cvg has a grasp on economics, if the 40gb is being phased out….
Retailers will have to offer lower RRP’s, or they will have hoards of returns from people who bought 40gigs a few weeks before
(ohh, about now)
If i still worked in a “place that sells games” ™
I would start wearing kevlar vest to work….

To put post 49 in a numerical context
US E3 content 44 items
UK E3 content 6 items
today is our normal update day SCEE,
there better be some gap closing by the end of today …
(& only 3 things that are US only on LIVE now, not 38)

@53 [Mr. Monkey]:
If you think back when the 60Gb Model was discontinued, Sony just let them sell out until stocks had dried-up rather than recalling them, so if you find a retailer who has stocks of 40Gb consoles try bartering with them either now, or when the 80Gb model has been released.
The longer you leave it though, the less chance of finding a 40Gb left for sale, so make sure you start your Christmas bargain-hunting period at the right time.
A “place that sells games” may also insist on bundling one, two, or even three game titles with the 80Gb console packs to boost their profits & your outlay, so a standalone 40Gb console may be a better deal anyway considering the prices you can find PS3 titles for now…

I myself am not bothered,
Got 40gb £275 last xmas
120gb installed £30
Imported DS3 £25
had that set-up since Jan
People who are buying 40gigs in the weeks before August 27th and are not aware of the 80gbs arrival are the ones who are going be missing out…
Serves them right for not doing research, don’t they know the wii is more powerful

WipEout HD due ‘before the end of the year’
Posted Jul 17th 2008 6:15PM by Alan Tsang
We haven’t heard much from WipEout HD since PlayStation Day more than two months ago. Unfortunately, SCEE president David Reeves just spoke out about it, and informed us that “there is a specific technical problem with WipEout that we have to solve. I can’t go into details but it is a really, really tricky technical problem that no region has been able to solve at the moment.” Wipeout is an updated version of earlier PSP titles WipEout Pulse and Pure that aims to run at 1080p and 60 fps. Could the technical problem have something to do with getting the game to run at that resolution? Speculation aside, Reeves believes the game will “come out before the end of the year” but cautions that “it is something that was just very difficult to get to grips with.” We think it is safe to say we are all looking forward to this title when it is complete.
