What format/quality are the downloaded video files?
286Mb for a 45 minute episode of “Doctor Who” is either using a very high compression technique or the quality is going to be very poor.
(And I won’t be needing one of the 8Gb Memory Sticks that are being advertised [blatantly] at the top of the home page, if that is the case]
Presumably, also, Digital Rights Management will be enforced meaning I cannot keep the files on my PC ready to pop back onto a memory stick at a later date.
A severe lack of information on the Beta site. A “Frequently Asked Questions” section either needs to be written, or be more prominently displayed.

Bit more information for the “SKY iPlayer”…
(Sorry, non-Windows environment users, just like the “BBC iPlayer” you miss out again)

How does GO!VIEW work?
The Kontiki program is designed to be a very secure peer-to-peer technology. It uses advanced encryption technologies and security methods to ensure that the delivery grid is safe to use. Other users of the network CANNOT access your PC. All videos are virus-checked before they are introduced to the grid. Only shows that are part of the GO!VIEW service can be transferred over Sky’s Kontiki grid. The Kontiki program is designed to run in the background and not interfere with other activity on your PC. This means that it will slow down its own activities while you’re using the internet for other things, including using GO!VIEW, or browsing the internet or using your email.
—
And…
—
What are the minimum system requirements?
To use GO!VIEW on PC your computer must meet the following requirements: - Windows XP or 32 bit Microsoft Vista( Go!View on PC is currently not available on Mac or Linux) -Broadband connection (recommended minimum of 1Mb) -Internet explorer 6.0 or above -Windows Media player 11 (this can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com) -Adobe Flash player (The latest version can be downloaded from http://www.adobe.com) During the installation the following programs will also be installed (if you dont already have them): -Microsoft.Net framework 2.0

…Details of the file said that the resolution was 480 x 272, but it was hard to tell as the 10 year old Partridge wasn’t filmed in widescreen, so consequently had two big black bars down the side.
…expiry of the files, but when you start to use it, it looks like the files expire 29 days after sitting on your pc and 14 days after sitting on your psp. Not sure whether you could download them again if you signed up to the monthly subscriptions though.
…you still need to use a USB cable to get it onto your PSP; there’s no streaming going on, so it’s no more convenient than the current way we put videos on our PSPs. The PS3 video store would be better but it’s not coming to PAL in 2008(!).

Doesn’t this new service conflict a bit with PlayTV coming in Sept ‘08.??
Comment by Cdadswell — Jul 23, 2008 @ 2:30 pm
Bah! More UK-only stuff from SCEE.
Comment by Tiran Kenja — Jul 23, 2008 @ 2:46 pm
The FAQ is found by following the link to “help” - top left hand corner of the website. However, it’s exactly comprehensive. Quality of content and DRM are both good questions to ask (neither of which is answered in the FAQ). Since we get a month free we may as well try it and see what the quality is like and whether it has crappy DRM.
Comment by reakt — Jul 23, 2008 @ 2:51 pm
meant to say the FAQ is *not* comprehensive.
Comment by reakt — Jul 23, 2008 @ 2:52 pm
Wow, you’re very fast with this news ThreeSpeech. One would think you’re just a PR company with no real knowledge of the subject you’re supposed to be representing on behalf of SCEE..
A UK PS.Blog would be nice. At least it would report things as they happen rather than nipping to the SCEE Virtual Press Centre for some press releases.
Comment by Yamster — Jul 23, 2008 @ 2:53 pm
I have posted additional information, but because I specified more than one web site in my response my comment is pending manual moderation by Three Speech.
But yes, reakt, the “FAQ” is not that useful.
(I was being sarcastic earlier about not being able to find the section as the font size is so huge you cannot miss it, but obviously that doesn’t translate very well in text)
Interesting concept that should be expanded with all subscription &/or freeview providers across Europe [don't just blame SCEE, Tiran Kenja; they need Sky TV onboard first to encourage the other regions to follow].
Pity the videos “expire” after 30 days though [more information in my previous comment once it is allowed through the moderation filter].

But will it work with custom firmware? - that’s all I’m bothered about!
Comment by reakt — Jul 23, 2008 @ 3:07 pm
Don’t think I’ll have any need for this service. I just got Location free set up in the last few days thanks to Sony Centre selling the LF-1K model for £50 in a sale hooked up to a Dreambox 500c. And for any programmes I have in my recorded collection, I just use remote play with my PS3…
Is there anything Im missing out on with this service? please tell me…
I would prefer it if Sony found a way of taking there sky deal to the PS3 for people not as privalidged as others to get access to some of there programming though… and fingures crossed they can broaden the PSP by implementing trophies on the go with upcoming software… fingures crossed

You lot are a bunch of self important tossers. In case you are interested and dont just post because you think everyone gives a damn what you think; the image and sound quality is excellent and guaranteed to be so. More than you can say for torrents and the downloads times are quick too.
Bunch of muppets
Comment by meeple — Jul 23, 2008 @ 7:06 pm
Seriously–why isn’t Sony focusing on AAA games to be played on their systems instead of all of this ‘fluff’ stuff?
Perhaps if Sony hadn’t had its lunch stolen and teeth kicked in by M$ at E3, they might see that it’s all about the games when someone chooses a video GAME system.

Maybe because *shock shock horror* sony doesn’t sell only ps3’s? And if you don’t have a psp you should just let this information pass and not WHINE about it

Either things like this work via the PS3, Windows or Mac, or not at all
Comment by alex — Jul 24, 2008 @ 9:42 am
@13 [meeple]:
You can get “Sesame Street” & “The Fraggles” on your PSP?… I’m hooked already dude.
#’Dance your cares away… worries for another day… let the music play…
“…and dont just post because you think everyone gives a damn what you think”
Erm, isn’t that the point of a blog that offers the facility to add comments?
Are we are supposed to say “Oh, isn’t that great” when we don’t think it is, or just not post anything at all?
If Sony never received any feedback how would they know if we were interested?

You can get all this content for free (& legally) on YouTube. Why would you want to pay for it. I do think Sony are putting their fingers in too many pies at the moment. If this content could be streamed with no lag then yes it would be awesome but we just dont have the technology for that yet with mobile devices.
I really just want to play some killer games but what is there really on the horizon at the moment - not a lot.
Comment by Terry — Jul 24, 2008 @ 10:00 am
You can get resident evil: apocalypse free on youtube? lol. Even if you could it certainly wouldn’t be legal.
Same for the rest of the stuff on there.
If it uses that Kontiki rubbish so it’s a no go for me. No way I’m doubling my bandwidth bill for an app like this.
Comment by Tony — Jul 24, 2008 @ 10:12 am
resident evil: apocalypse is a bit pants anyhow, I was referring more to stuff like top gear and the like.
