for those of you that were wondering where wipeout is!!
WipEout HD has yet to be released because of a “specific technical problem”, but Sony hopes it will be out “before the end of the year”.
“There is a specific technical problem with WipEout that we have to solve. I can’t go into details but it is a really, really tricky technical problem that no region has been able to solve at the moment,” Sony Europe boss David Reeves told us when we hassled him about the game’s progress this week at LA.
“I think it will come out before the end of the year but it is something that was just very difficult to get to grips with.” eurogamer.com
i thought that i would pass on the info as three speech probably wouldnt.

…and “Gran Turismo 5″ will see a release in 2010 (at the earliest):

…Kazunori Yamauchi ["the founder of Polyphony Digital and creative mastermind behind the studio's Gran Turismo franchise"]: Of course after this next update, we’re going to have another update later on in the year. There’s no plans in the works for GT5 yet - that might be 2009, or it might be 2010… But we’re totally focused on getting the updates through for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, and that’s all we’re focused on.

2010 for GT5 thats a joke! I personally found Prologue to be quite boring. You cant damage cars, you cant buys bits for them and to be honest the tracks werent amazing either. high spped ring has been in every GT since day 1 and the london track is just like driving round the real thing with congestion charges with regards to speed.
Comment by Terry — Jul 18, 2008 @ 10:08 am

@7 [Terry]:
I bought & played the ‘full’ version of “Gran Turismo 5 Prologue” for the first time at the end of May (rather than the previously available demonstration & pre-release variants), and yes, I too, found it far too slow (read: boring).
Granted the first batch of vehicles you can afford are not particularly tarmac-tearaways but I prefer the faster paced “Ridge Racer 7″, or the recently released “Race Driver GRID” (using the “Ego” game engine, an evolved version of the “Neon” engine previously in the Codemasters forerunning title “Colin McRae: DIRT” that I didn’t find too engaging either).
The rendering of the vehicles I have seen in “Gran Turismo 5 Prologue” is very true to the “in-the-metal” originals [many of which I have been lucky to own and/or drive!] but if I wanted this much realism then I may as well just get in one of my own vehicles & drive around for real (cost of fuel, pending).
My favourite title at present though is “Burnout Paradise”. Spectacular crashes & real attention to detail in ancillary scenery. The ability to drop-in to online games almost instantaneously is a particularly good feature that I hope is carried forward and used as a benchmark for future titles, not only by this developer but by their competitors too.
It is especially welcoming that the development team at Criterion Games are dedicated to updating & providing further add-ons to this title for free, such as the very recent 1.30 update (”Codename: Cagney”) adding 70 more challenges, two extra vehicles, three new liveries, custom soundtrack support, and host of other fixes & updates.
I am definitely looking forward to how motorbikes will be implemented in the next update (”Codename: Davis”) in August 2008 because the cars currently do not feature drivers! This update (again, for free) may also affect sales of “MotorStorm Pacific Rift”, but I will probably buy this anyway just as a comparison (to the other titles I own, including the original “MotorStorm” release).
The development team here, Evolution Studios, has listened to the praise & the criticism of how the first title was received by the public, implementing changes as well as enhancing the game-play beyond the original release day title. A notable addition to the sequel is the ability to support 20-player online play as well as a 4-player split-screen option.
There are some very enjoyable “racers” on the PS3 at present. However, I didn’t really enjoy “SEGA Rally” as I thought the graphics were a bit of a let-down [more like a PS2 presentation, than what I would expect of a PS3 title]… and I have yet to try my previously purchased “Stuntman: Ignition”. I may try “Ferrari Challenge” in the next month or two as well, if they have fixed the reported issues with the online multiplayer facility.
One driving title to stay clear of, mind you… “Full Auto 2: Battlelines”.
With such competition available now & expected in the next year or so, I probably will just ignore “Gran Turismo 5″ completely.

@12 [manley]:
No worries, manley. Yes, repeating it until Three Speech create a distinct blog entry for the news will avoid the repeated enquiries on every other blog entry regardless of the day of the week.
Goodness only knows how delayed the full “WipEout” project is running behind if the ’stop-gap’ “WipEout HD” title is going to be at least 12 months late.
My guess is that the frame rate at the HD resolution cannot be maintained in multi-player online games, so a compromise may well have to be reached with either slowing the game down (so it is like “Fatal Inertia EX”?), dropping the screen resolution (and hence dropping the “HD” suffix), or dropping the number of vehicles on screen by either restricting the number of players in one game, or removing the feature completely.
Still, plenty more titles to look forward to in the coming months.
No doubt we’ll read those who are not disgusted with Sony because of the poor treatment; but if you buy a console with the intention of only playing one specific game & that game isn’t available at the time of purchase then you are partly responsible. You do not enter into a contract for first & third party developers to provide you with game titles in the future.
Also, there will be those that moan about the lack of content on the US ‘Store versus that on the European, Australasian, and Asian counterparts.
Again, you didn’t enter into any agreement for any amount of service, nor was any pricing policy in place to match US prices with any other region. The provision of (playable) demo versions of titles should not be an firm expectation in any region, but if you are at all unsure about making a purchase before trying a product, then don’t buy it.
“Gran Turismo 5 Prologue” was a sufficient trial version for me to put me off buying any further releases in the franchise.
If “WipEout HD” is never released, I won’t care either. I never like the previous iterations of the idea.
“Home” sounds more & more restrictive by the day given that it is now to be region-locked (so you cannot meet people in other regions unless you are in an invited private area).
From the video footage I have seen of “LittleBigPlanet” I am still not convinced that this is ’saving grace’ of the PS3 line-up.
The title I was most looking forward to, “Resident Evil 5″, although will be worth playing from the additional video footage I have seen this week, is not the “horror/slash” fest I was expecting. It seems to have turned into another action/shooter title.
At least there is still “Resistance 2″ & “Mirror’s Edge” to fall back on. Although I hope “Mirror’s Edge” now lives up to the hype (in the same vein as “Assassin’s Creed” last year). This is certainly a title I would like to see a demo version of made available, but if one is not forthcoming, then I will just wait for the various outlets to review it & I will make up my own mind based on these.
“Far Cry 2″ is not going to be made available in ‘demo’ form either as, apparently, it is ‘too complicated’ to do so.
Warning bells are ringing here.
“PlayTV” sounds too expensive, although the ability to port the recorded programmes to PSP format may be worth looking into (as long as some form of Digital Rights Management is not implemented).
I wonder if the BBC are going to have a say on this in view of their efforts in moving towards an official “iPlayer” product for the PS3?
Still, not long before the Tokyo Game Show, and we can all jump on the hype bandwagon once again.

DAM Mr fanpages,
Bad day at the office? I have never seen you so cynical!
But I would have to agree on most points. On the up side dual shock 3 is out yay!!
Comment by manley — Jul 18, 2008 @ 12:53 pm
I’m OK… thanks.
As it happens I bought a DUALSHOCK 3 last December, and never have the ‘vibration’ feature enabled as I didn’t like this (either). In fact, I prefer the SIXAXIS as it is lighter to hold for prolonged periods of play. I am having a bad day come to think of it!
At least I have PS2 backward compatibility on my PS3 so I can still play “Urban Reign” & “Black” (given that “Black 2″ has not had any press recently).
But reading loads of feedback & critique on the Expo events of this week does make you feel that the entire world is against Sony, and nothing they can do ever suits anybody any of the time, never mind everybody all of the time.
Either way, I don’t have any Microsoft consoles, but I do have two Wii consoles, a GameCube, and many PS2s, numerous PSPs, DS Lites, and GameBoy Advances to fall back on. Hell, I may even play “Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring” on my original PlayStation tonight, or learn Japanese so I can navigate the Asian ‘Store to download it.
Or, then again, I could just go back to playing “Pain” or “Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection Online”… after trying out “Elefunk”.
Come to think of it… no news on “Tekken 6″.
Perhaps I better not think any more…

This will sound like such a stupid complaint I know for GT5 but its like the developer has spent so long making the cars look beautiful that they have neglected the tracks. The big letdown for me is the trees, their made out of 2 polygons that cross each other in a cross formation. This was what they did on the PS1 and to be honest looks rubbish. I know in fast racing games this becomes a blue but when your in your C grade car doing 90mph you notice these things.

@18 [Terry]:
…or watch BBC iPlayer, or your own recorded “PlayTV” videos. I totally agree.
Yes, I thought that was a last ditch attempt to appeal to a mass audience that otherwise would think ‘meh… motor racing rubbish’. I didn’t watch it on “Grandstand” why should I bother now.
If you are a formula 1, 2, or even 3, fan (or even, competitor) why would you bother with “Gran Turismo 5 [Prologue]“? Oh yes, you can get to watch “Top Gear”. Sold!
Not.
I suspect the reason for the delay in bringing the full version to market is the fact that all the development team are ‘having’ to record themselves going ’round loads of race tracks in every variant of vehicle they can sign-up just to appeal to the three people who will actually use the “Gran Turismo TV” facility.
Most of the models will have been superceded by 2010 anyway. Some probably already have been.

2010? What a joke. Here’s a quick memo to Polyphony and Sony:
1) WE DON’T GIVE A FLYING **** ABOUT GT:TV!!!
2) PROLOGUE IS TOO SLOW. It feels like you’re driving a Ferrari at about 30mph.
3. Get some new sound effects. I’ve heard the same damn tire squeeling sfx since GT1.
4) Remove the High Speed Ring and never show it to us again.
5. Why are the crowd cardboard cutouts?
6. The London track is pants. Remove it.
7. Remove the stupid time penalties.
Seriously I’ve never had such a boring time playing a game as I had with GT5:P. I spend hours and hours on GT4 but this one is just awful.
Comment by Dave — Jul 18, 2008 @ 8:24 pm
Chin up Mr Fanpages! I’ve been in a similarly gloomy mood recently but I do rely on your prompt & timely information releases - methinks if it wasn’t for your fine self, we wouldn’t be privvy to a hell of a lot of information, Sony-wise.
Your points are valid & well presented - I’m a little ashamed now of my previous churlish boohoo post about getting rid of the PS3!
I just need to get on with it and track down Ico & maybe even bite the bullet and just buy Subsistence - having held out thus far waiting for Snake Eater compatibility!
Comment by Zoob — Jul 19, 2008 @ 9:25 am
@19: GT TV is the perfect thing to sell to people buying GT 5p: car enthusiasts… nothing mass market about that.
Comment by ThreeSpeechlover — Jul 19, 2008 @ 10:41 am
@23 [Zoob]:
You are too kind, but I appreciate your comments.
I have not played either of the titles you mentioned, but they are highly regarded by critics so you could do worse than not buying them!
Don’t feel bad about having a ‘down’ day yourself. I convinced myself I didn’t need a PS3 prior to release day, and didn’t rush out to buy one, but was persuaded otherwise. It sat unopened in the original packaging for over two hours when I got back home. How stupid I feel now… That’s two hours of gaming time I’ll never get back!
@24 [ThreeSpeechlover]:
I like to think I am enthusiastic about cars (but not formula series racing), but the thought of waiting 12 months or more for the inclusion of the “GT-TV” facility is not worth the wait, even if I did find “Gran Turismo 5 Prologue” an enjoyable experience.
BFN,

“And GTTV… if you want to watch Top Gear watch Dave…”
Then @23 Dave responds (following moderation) with two very good points that I am glad it is not just me who thinks this (as I was beginning to believe I was the only one)…
“1) WE DON’T GIVE A FLYING **** ABOUT GT:TV!!!
2) PROLOGUE IS TOO SLOW. It feels like you’re driving a Ferrari at about 30mph.”
Have you tried “Race Driver: GRID”? Much faster… (and not out is the US yet)! Or “Burnout Paradise”. Again, the fast-paced challenges online with four or five other human drivers interacting with all the artificial intelligence-based vehicles in the environment is making “Gran Turismo 5 Prologue” look embarrassing in terms of speed.
Alternatively, given the full version of “Gran Turismo 5″ is more than a year away, watching paint dry is faster.

fp.

After just 3 hours of gameplay with GT5:P I ditched it.
I went and brought Race Driver: Grid, and from the off, the races were exciting, seat of thepants stuff. The cars and tracks look good and the feature where you can correct your mistakes is very innovative.
All round a great game to counter a very disappointing GT:5P

No problemo Mr Fanpages, happy I could help out a little!
Funny tale that one of yours. I also stalled, convinced myself I didn’t need one then spotted they were in the shops whilst heading back from a music festival & promptly purchased one as soon as I got off the train at home!
I’ve played Ico (hired it) and got stuck but didn’t persist & returned it to the shop as I had plenty of other titles at the time to spend time on. However, Shadow of the Collussus was superb & has prompted me to revisit Ico. Subsistence is supposed to be nice, but really just an “enhanced version” of Snake Eater & thus I’m dithering over whether to spend money on it or not. I guess I could just dig the PS2 out of hibernation!
I’ve also been happily returning to Okami & God Of War 2, so I think I’m going to start keeping an eye on PS2 titles again…

While Tekken 6 was a no show at E3, in a recent interview with GameEX Magazine, Haruki Suzaki revealed that the game is currently scheduled for Dec. 2008, and when asked if it was still a PS3 exclusive, Suzaki replied “No, It hasn’t been determined yet as of the moment.”

“Soul Calibur IV” was developed by Project Soul (an internal development group at Namco) & published by Namco Bandai/Ubisoft.
Polyphony Digital (an internal development group at Sony Computer Entertainment, Incorporated) are developing “Gran Turismo 5″. The publisher will be Sony Computer Entertainment.
