This is cool as long as we don’t come after 2.37 in July, 2.38 in August & 2.39 in Septemeber.
This is waiting

It could be worse…
As reported yesterday, a number of Nintendo console owners who upgraded to the latest Wii firmware update (version 3.3) can no longer use the most recent Datel “Freeloader” product to play imported titles.
The Wii update also removes the “The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess” ’save game exploit’ that homebrew enthusiasts had previously made use of. Not that I know what “homebrew” means, obviously!
(But there go my “Manhunt 2″ [Wii] sessions… Nuts [as in, 'kick in the...']!)
At least PS3 consoles get to keep their global region compatibility.
PS. Something else to cheer-up a PS3 owner?…

And will still be waiting for… And for some time i would think.. What a let down.. Why do 2.36 at all why not just leave it till 2.40 is ready! Can only be that it’s not going to be ready for at some time yet. unless it’s in QA but that would still make it at least two weeks await if they don’t find anything.. Notice that it’s not even date on the blog or any details on what stage it’s at.. Why not do it step by step, Not like we can only have one update every six months like some! In game XMB then thophies then MORE!! whatever that is.. I don’t mind having an update every week, The time it takes is worth the improvements.. this is update isn;t worth anything, Have never really had an issues with any games.. What a let down to today that been..

Fair question. What date is 2.40 coming out? Never mind soon, give us a calendar date.

Talking of wasting time with updates… how about the soon to-be-released [today, probably] PSP firmware revision (to 4.00) that adds “Google” search support to the XrossMediaBar? Why bother?
The additional of changing the viewing speed of a video being played is semi-useful (if you are in a rush to watch a 2 hour movie in 75 minutes, for example), but the ability to search “Google” without launching a browser application & just having an extra option under [Network]… I don’t see the point. It’s not like you are going find information you need that much faster… especially considering you may be connected to a wireless network whilst doing so.
Not really worthy of a prefix of “4″ in any respect. Revision “3.97″ may have been more appropriate (”3.96″ was issued in the US only on 3 June 2008 with the “Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2″ title).

Pingback by PlayStation 3 firmware updates 2.36 and 2.40. In-game XMB, trophies and more… | GameBlews PS3, XBOX 360, Wii, PSP, DS News — Jun 18, 2008 @ 2:01 pm
This is very welcome news! A lot of us have been waiting on the in-game-xmb support. I’m very intrigued by the “trophies” concept. On the US blog it says that more information will be provided about this feature soon. In the meantime at least we can speculate about it a little! For instance, I hope that the trophy system will recognise my previous acheivements. For example once installed will it somehow award me a trophy for having previously completed Drakes Fortune? and how can I show off my trophy collection? I expect that when Home arrives I can invite my virtual friends over to my virtual pad and then parade around my blinged-out trophy rooms as my friends gasp in awe
Think “virtual-MTV-cribs”. Prior to the launch of Home how can I show off my acheivements I wonder? Perhaps when browsing through the friends list one can see the goods there? What about when someone on my friend’s list makes a tremendous acheivement on a monumental scale?! - Maybe I’ll be notified of this in the form of a pop-up message e.g. “Jonny5 has just beaten your high score on Super Stardust HD!”. Who knows. The point is that the trophies system has some real potential and I’m really looking forward to trying it out.

Am I pointing out the blatantly obvious by making the association between trophies and home? They have always been discussed hand in hand. I sincerely hope this doesn’t mean that 2.4 is launched at the same time as home, as it will be easy for SONY to justify the delay in firmware update by saying “home” has slipped.
2.4 first (hopefully this month or next then Home within a couple of months would be nice.
I hate being a skeptic but SONY always proves me right
Fingers crossed i’m wrong

The Burnout ‘Cagney’ update is due for release on 10/06/08. This update features ‘Custom Soundtracks’ which is essentially ‘In-Game XMB’. We should probably expect FW V2.40 to arrive shortly before then.

Isn’t it ironic that the UK “official” PlayStation blog is having to refer to the US official PlayStation blog for news?
Sony need to get their act together when it comes to EU PR.
But I wont deny that the news is exciting.
Comment by Yamster — Jun 18, 2008 @ 8:19 pm
Sick to death of hearing about in-game XMB, Sony you should have released in-game xmb months ago.
Home, in-game XMB shut up going on about it or release it.
One or the other i don’t care anymore, I’ve had my PS3 since launch and I’m sick of waiting.
Comment by anthonyp — Jun 18, 2008 @ 9:40 pm
And also anybody with half a brain knows that there not going release 2.4 till E3.
The god damn things already done, there just fukin around with the gamers again for a stupid PR campaign.
Comment by anthonyp — Jun 18, 2008 @ 9:43 pm
Are we supposed to be grateful now?
This is long overdue.
I too have had my PS3 from launch and it honestly sits under the TV gatherinng dust apart from the odd DVD I watch on it.
It has turned out to be a total turkey in my opinion.
NEVER AGAIN!!!
Comment by Ton Capone — Jun 19, 2008 @ 4:53 am
@18 why don’t you shut up and trade it in then, all you ever do is moan, cheer up son you have the most powerful console in the world gathering dust!
Comment by andy — Jun 19, 2008 @ 6:04 am
If I had one request for future firm ware updates, it would be region free bluray playback. Some aren’t locked, but some are. Weird and annoying! I want to spend my money.
Comment by LordOfRuin — Jun 19, 2008 @ 6:44 am
@15
Custom soundtracks does not require in-game XMB. See Super Stardust, High Velocity Bowling, MLB08, Pain (after today’s update) and many others.
In-game XMB may allow you to play music from the HDD over the top of the game audio, but that is a different thing (and pretty useless IMO).

Anyone noticed how quick the icons load now on PSN? Is this from FW 2.36? Lightning quick now! Nice one Sony

As a result of this trend, ad serving technologies stretch to a new heights so as to accelerate the performance of campaigns. A technology build on the basis of this trend is dynamic ads. These ads are nothing but ads whose visual appearance can be changed to umpteen version on the fly even during when the campaign is live on a website, interesting huh? Providers are backing up this technology claims, that these dynamic ads enhances users engagement more than normal creative. Moreover application…

I do have to point out that the last FW update was to lay the foundations for 2.40.
“the big one” needs to be uploaded in stages as it is a BIG change to the system.
ALSO without sounding like too much of a fanboy…perfection cannot be rushed…Microsoft rushed the 360, cut corners and penny pinched and look what happened…
Sony DO care about the PS3, they want it to be perfect…just hold on…dont defect to the other side….i assure you all, it WILL be worth it.

[...] 2008 was the year PS3 finally went Home, with a public beta of the ambitious virtual community launching on December 11. This was just the thick sugary icing on Sony’s social gaming cake – earlier in the year, we rejoiced at the introduction of the Trophy system, allowing us to show off our achievements to friends, and the in-game XMB access, allowing us to quickly pause a game, bring up the messenger and… show off our friends achievements to friends more quickly. http://threespeech.com/blog/2008/06/firmware-updates-236-and-240/ [...]
