Sony have just confirmed the release date for DUALSHOCK3. The new PS3 controller will be available from the 4th of July. Read on for SCEE’s official press release.
June 27, 2008: Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced that DUALSHOCK®3 Wireless Controller will be available for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) in Europe on July 4, 2008. The eagerly awaited wireless controller with vibration function will put truly responsive gaming power into players’ hands, shaking up gaming experiences when it arrives on PS3 this summer.
It’s not what you see – it’s what you feel that makes DUALSHOCK 3 the first choice for all gamers. More than 28 million DUALSHOCK controllers have been sold since the first DUALSHOCK release for PlayStation® in 1998. Now DUALSHOCK 3 puts some serious power into existing and future PS3 titles, with its vibration function offering even more interactive play between gamers and the many games – past, present and future – which support the vibration functionality. DUALSHOCK 3 also retains the high-precision, high-response motion-sensitive aspects that have made SIXAXIS so popular.
David Reeves, President and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, commented, “We are delighted to confirm that DUALSHOCK 3 will be released in SCEE territories in early July. We hope this will add to the intense gaming experience for our fans, as we continue to evolve PS3, its software and its peripherals.”
Almost all future PS3 releases will support DUALSHOCK 3, and the controller is already compatible with many existing PS3 titles (firmware upgrade 1.94 required). Face the heart-pounding fear of alien warfare in Resistance: Fall of Man™, hold tight as you tear through the streets of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue™, or feel the thrill of treasure hunting in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune™ – your favourite PS3 games like you’ve never experienced them before.
Making your gaming experience more immersive, more intuitive and more realistic, DUALSHOCK 3 is the only Bluetooth® controller combining vibration function and SIXAXIS™ features, and the first choice for anyone wanting to get the most out of their PS3 gaming experience.
wow about time… like how far behind the rest of the world is this!
anyway mine works fine and lovin the rumble.
Get one if you can. Its a shame some games wont support it (in your collections), but most do.

Only 8 months after Japan release, 3 months after US release. Sony really wanted to sell their otherwise useless stock of Sixaxis for their most beloved continent.

This is without doubt, a day Christmas purchase now.

Still a bit pricey at 40 quid though, might have to see what import deals are available instead.
Comment by Dan (PSN - Detale) — Jun 30, 2008 @ 9:51 am
£39.99 in the UK? That’s ridiculous. I imported a US one quite some time ago and it did not cost me nearly as much as that.
Comment by Neil — Jun 30, 2008 @ 9:52 am
Trade in your old SixAxis towards them. God, we finally get them without the hassle of importing and people still moan.
Comment by Cho — Jun 30, 2008 @ 10:02 am
This is a joke. I paid £30 including shipping from YesAsia over 6 months ago!
Sure, the price difference isn’t totally under Sony’s control but the release date is.
Comment by TheShirts — Jun 30, 2008 @ 10:04 am
UPDATE: Just looked and EVEN NOW YesAsia have it for about £37 with free shipping.
Comment by TheShirts — Jun 30, 2008 @ 10:06 am
Are you sure you can trade in SIXAXIS controllers for DUALSHOCK 3 controllers? I just ordered a 40 GB PS3 with SIXAXIS, tired of waiting for this announcement. The price is way high, though.
Comment by Ole — Jun 30, 2008 @ 10:17 am
I imported mine from hmv japan. I’ve had it a few months and it cost me less that 40quid (can’t remember exactly how much). I guess the only problem with importing is possibly that the product isn’t covered under warranty. If it’s only a couple of quid more to buy it from your local retailer rather than importing, then you have somewhere to return it if it goes wrong and that’s worth the extra I reckon.
On another note I hope that the Dualshock 3 released here in Europe is of the same high build quality as the one sold in Japan and the US. Compare with the crappy SixAxis, the Dualshock 3 is much more rigid, completely opaque and the analogue sticks feel more sensitive and just better!
Comment by reakt — Jun 30, 2008 @ 10:20 am
Just ordered one. Thanks Threespeech.
Comment by Mostyn — Jun 30, 2008 @ 10:32 am
i’ve had mine for ages from yesasia and for £30, but glad to see we’re finally “officially” getting it here.
The rumble adds a nice weight to the pad and makes it feel like the old ones (the original six axis just felt a bit too lightweight for my liking!)
Now with the imminent release of in-game XMB what are we going to talk about now! Maybe that could be the next discussion topic on here??
Comment by fid — Jun 30, 2008 @ 10:32 am
I got mine for 35 pounds from amazon.co.uk, maybe they are still on sale!
Comment by ThreeSpeechlover — Jun 30, 2008 @ 10:45 am
@everyone
LOLz Nubz! - get my rumble for free.
Hook your chair to the back of a lorry.

SCEE - £1 isn’t equal to $1
SCEE inviting you to the party 3 months late but charging you an extra 25% for getting you a ticket in the first place..
Comment by marvzilla — Jun 30, 2008 @ 11:21 am
@ ThreeSpeech:
Yes, but you are not listing the price. EG claims it’s going to be £40! That’s SHOCKING!!
http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=163909
PS3 owners will be paying an extortionate price for a very late product that’s being arrogantly marketed by Sony.
Oh, wait a minute…I’m getting a feeling of deja vu!
Comment by Zed Zee — Jun 30, 2008 @ 11:27 am
Oh Sony with these peripherals you are really ripping us off..
£100 for the PSP GPS
£40 for a controller
How much are you going to sting us for PlayTV or prehaps you can’t price / release it yet because there’s no dollar comparison to lump 25% onto.
How much will a movie download cost us when / if it ever reaches these shores?
Comment by Demibeard — Jun 30, 2008 @ 11:32 am
40 quid! Robbing b*stards…it’s cheaper to import one from half way around the world!
Comment by Tuatara — Jun 30, 2008 @ 11:36 am
What took you so long. I already have two!
Comment by davidc14 — Jun 30, 2008 @ 11:41 am
Ha who doesn’t have one of these already? Just import it, it’s cheaper and you could have been enjoying it for half a year already…
Comment by James — Jun 30, 2008 @ 11:45 am
DualShock3 USA Price $55.00
DualShock3 UK Price $80.00
DualShock3 JPN Price $50.00
Why are we getting charged so much more than what the rest of the world is paying. It is cheaper to import a DS3 from Asia than it is to buy one in our own country…………….. This sucks.
Comment by cg — Jun 30, 2008 @ 11:55 am
Overpriced addition. Sony should show some respect for those that paid over the odds for the machine originally.
Comment by raithrover — Jun 30, 2008 @ 11:59 am

will the Dualshock3 be boxed with the Playstation3 ?
Comment by christian — Jun 30, 2008 @ 11:59 am
I got my DualShock3 of ebay for £30.00 including P+P from HongKong. Why are SCEE charging £40 for this item?
Comment by samB — Jun 30, 2008 @ 12:23 pm
So, ThreeSpeech, there you go. You now have your answer on this announcement.
Now, are you going to have the cahoonas to tell Sony?
I mean, I otherwise really don’t get what you’re doing with this blog.
You’re neither official or unofficial. You claim you want to feed things back, but rarely say that you are doing so, except for lost causes like surveys of which PS1 (PS1?!) games Sony should emulate for PSP/PS3, because God knows, they’re useless at choosing the right ones.
You reply very sporadically to people’s comments on here and seem quite happy to let them complain until they’re blue in the face and that feels like you’re simply ignoring them or you don’t have the freedom to say much.
So, I think before you can go any further, you should examine what this blog is supposed to be about, because clearly, it’s not turned out as you/Sony had quite intended originally.
Frankly, I’d rather Sony just makes the US blog bigger and let them accommodate Europe as well but they wouldn’t do that, would they?
Usually, the American’s world ends at their borders, so they don’t know we exist, let alone the fact that most PS3 owners outside of their ‘country’ and Japan are suffering extortionate pricing, late releases and a shambolic strategy that’s put me off buying the PS3 and put it (the console) in an undeserved (technologically speaking) third place.
So what will it be, ThreeSpeech? What is it that you’re trying to achieve here? What will you tell Sony about how PS3 owners feel about this particular news announcement?
Comment by Zed Zee — Jun 30, 2008 @ 12:28 pm
i got one for 20 quid off of ebay at the begining of the year.
40 rubs is ludicrous!
Comment by iagdad — Jun 30, 2008 @ 1:17 pm
We get everything later at higher prices… they must think we only care for antiquities!
Comment by Gibb — Jun 30, 2008 @ 1:29 pm
Got a Japanese white one a few weeks after their release for 30 quid…
£40 for a controller is off the funking scale… a bit like a full wiimote and chuck.
Then again, i guess as they are loosing so much money on the PS3 hardware they need to make some profit elsewhere… haha
Comment by SH4RKY — Jun 30, 2008 @ 2:13 pm
Can’t recommend the Dual Shock 3 enough, and like everyone else - imported mine from the US for a lot less than £40…
Comment by MrGilder — Jun 30, 2008 @ 2:28 pm
I really wish people would stop complaining about this sort of thing.
£40 is fine, considering the old one was £40 I would suggest even £50 would be fine, as you have extra functions.
When will people realise that everything is more expensive in the UK, it’s called cost of living.
Petrol is more expensive here, bread is more expensive here, cars are more expensive here, ipods are more expensive here, x-boxes are more expensive here.
Have you ever thought that SCEE might have higher costs here they have to match, for example due to the cost of living being higher the cost of employees is also higher as they will have to pay them more.
I wish people would wake up out of their little “sony are trying to rip us off, the world is unfair” fantasies and get a grip on reality.
Comment by John — Jun 30, 2008 @ 2:45 pm
had my ceramic white DS3 months now, loving it all the way, the build quality is soo much better than an out of the box sixaxis. cost me less to import one than a certain retail store were selling standard off the shelf tesco-value quality sixaxis for!!
£40 for an offical one? get a grip SONY.
@ John (31) “£50 would be fine, as you have extra functions.” SERIOUSLY??? sixaxis was a failier, and now you think it’s OK for people to pay £50 for what is basically a wireless PS2 controller?? who actually uses sixaxis? it wouldn’t be missed if it vanished tomorrow i know that much.
Comment by mobiletone — Jun 30, 2008 @ 3:36 pm
oh yeah, and i’d like to know why the old PS2 dualshocks rumble has never worked on the PS3 even with an official SONY ps2-ps3 adapter when the new DS3 pad deals quite happily with old PS2 rumble functions.
answer me that one SONY.

I’m from Russia, and we have the same price as it in UK. What did you say about ‘cost of living’?
Comment by NAZAR — Jun 30, 2008 @ 10:30 pm
Isn’t £40 less than a Wiimote and Nunchuck or a 360 controller with rechargeable battery pack?
Now shut the **** up. Funny: been gaming all my life and I still cannot stand gamers.

Will SCEE be providing a system by which we can trade in our now obsolete six axis contollers and recieve the new “last gen” dual shock 3 free or at a large discount?
If not, why not?
They said they were not doing rumble as it was last gen so I invested in the six axis controllers in good faith.
Comment by Ton Capone — Jul 2, 2008 @ 1:30 pm
@ 31
Nice try at viral marketing John and trying to convince us it’s a good deal.
You failed, we see it for what it is.
Comment by Ton Capone — Jul 2, 2008 @ 1:32 pm
@Ton Capone,
Another whiner. Do explain how the SIXAXIS is obsolete. Either that or quit using words you don’t understand.
Comment by Steve — Jul 2, 2008 @ 6:40 pm
Hey, Ton Capone, you crank.
Firstly, what’s this “we”? Typical crank; thinks everyone agrees with your complaints.
Secondly, you can keep your SIXAXIS controllers because THEY ARE NOT OBSOLETE AND THEY STILL WORK. Nobody is forcing you to buy DS3s. So don’t buy one, and do shut up. Thanks.
Comment by Cortez — Jul 2, 2008 @ 7:25 pm
@ 46
I wanted a rumble contoller in the first place but was denied it by Sony who claimed it was “last gen” and “technically incomplatible to do rumble and motion sensing”, until Nintendo managed to do it brilliantly then Sony claim they have just worked out how to make them all the while we have been buying up their stocks of crap sixaxis controllers.
Well, this is not right and proper and we should be compenated properly.
Also, no, I will not shut up.
