Home, the interactive 3D world for PS3™ users, hosts the virtual re-run of PlayStation Day 2008 in its new Media and Events Space

Last week, PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) users experienced all the sights, sounds and action of PlayStation Day, the product showcase held on May 6th in London, from the comfort of their living rooms. The online event was held as a test-run of the new PlayStation Media & Events Space, a virtual arena that will serve as the live entertainment hub of the thriving PS3 online community, hosting everything from new game unveilings to sports events to fashion shows.
Attendees were drawn from 10,000 PS3 users who have been test-driving Home as ‘closed beta’ users. Given exclusive VIP entry to the Space, they were greeted by an impressive, large-scale area dressed with various elements from real-world PlayStation Day, including the iconic hexagonal branding and artwork from each of the day’s PlayStation zones. Users were able to explore the Space, experiencing highlights of the day such as a photo gallery of games developers and a jumbo screen of the day’s speeches with an introduction from Kazuo “Kaz” Hirai, President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Sony Computer Entertainment. Users were also able to enjoy a video stream of all the action from the real-world PlayStation Day experience.
The online Media & Events Space can be re-dressed and re-branded just like a real-life venue. Following the test event’s success, Home will now start scheduling more elaborate and exciting productions for the Space, which will be available for use by both first and third parties.
“As well as looking great, the Media and Events Space is flexible and user-friendly - it’s a real focal point for our virtual community. This was a very exciting first event and we’ve already received plenty of great feedback,” says Home producer Martijn Van Der Meulen.
Why show us these great features of HOME if we cant have it?!
Since it was first announced I have been eager to get into my own PlayStation Home. But its delayed and delayed and delayed. I understand that Kaz Hirai wants to deliver a great service from launch, but virtual spaces take time. I think it would be better if Sony launch HOME in a massive PUBLIC beta, and then build on it from there.
Ive heard a nasty rumour that Home might not launch until 2009…
Please Sony blog people, can you give us a REALISTIC launch date?

That’s a nifty idea.
It’s things like these that make me want to stab myself when I notice I still have to wait for Home.
I can see them doing a lot more of these virtual events when Home hits its release. Nice to see a worthy take on Xbox 360’s Xbox Live.

We’ve had a year of reading press releases from Sony about Home and how great it is. I’m afraid it’s getting a bit tedious. The only announcement I would be interested to read from now on (regarding Home) is the announcement that it’s available to download as an open beta or a general release.

I agree with Shin-Ra. Home is something they need to make practically perfect before release.
All these people shouting “release it now!” will be the first to turn around and savage Sony if there’s anything remotely wrong with it.
Then again, maybe that’s just what some of these people want…

Do Sony honestly think that people are going to engage in this rubbish? What exactly is the point of putting an interface like this on a function which is much easier to perform by simply downloading the video from the PS Store and watching it full screen?

It’s not just the waiting that’s painful (I’m actually very patient) - it’s that combined with the constant disappointment as the delivery of Home misses Sony’s own deadlines and slips further and further away from us. If Sony had said when they announced this that we’d have to wait for 18 months or 2 years for it then fair enough but that’s not how it was presented to us :-
“Home will go into a closed beta test this spring with a full launch targeted for later this year” [2007!]

Why verbally attack PlayStation fans because they want HOME? Being a PlayStation fan doesn’t mean you cant have a critical opinion of Sony. There are many, many genuine PlayStation fans who love their console but are fatigued by the endlessly sliding of release dates.
If Home launched now and it was just a big pretty chat room I would be fine with that! Because then it is ‘out there’ and the Sony London team can build on it and add new features.

@ Andronix - I haven’t “verbally attacked” anyone, just stated a fact.
There are lots of people saying ‘just release it already’ and complaining about the delays. But we know from experience that if there’s anything at all wrong with it, Sony will be slaughtered, in many cases by the same people, who will then be questioning why it was released in “such a bad state”, and saying “they should have delayed it and made sure it was ready.” Sony are in a no-win situation, regardless of what they do.
I mean let’s face it, people are finding enough to complain about even when there’s NOTHING wrong. Every time a firmware update is released, all we get is “why no in-game XMB?” or “update 2.xx broke my PS3!” - but we know that there’s absolutely nothing wrong, because everyone else’s PS3’s are still working fine.
Unfortunately, it seems there are a lot of PS3 owners out there who just aren’t happy unless they’re whining about something…
I too am impatient about Home, but I also want it to be right from the moment it’s released, so if Sony want to delay it to make sure of that, I’m all for it.
Release dates slide for most software - they always have, and it certainly isn’t a PS3-specific issue. I personally wish that all companies would refrain from issuing release dates until the product has ‘gone gold’ - that way, people wouldn’t feel let down by slippage, and devs would have less pressure from deadlines.
The question is, do you want it NOW, or do you want it RIGHT? My answer would be the latter, every time. Sadly, with most areas of today’s society, for most people the answer seems to be ‘NOW’.

If you’re gloating in press releases and showing off how amazing it is, then it sounds like you’re happy with it.
I beleive you said you wouldn’t release it until you’re happy with it?
Stop saying how amazing it is and then not releasing it because it’s not good enough.
Or just release a beta.

@paranoimia - the people that want it now are mostly americans, they always want things now now now. They need instant gratification such as: i want to lose weight now (they dont see results in 2 weeks they get angered saying pills dont work), students asking questions about homework and expecting an answer from teachers (its homework your suppose to figure it out)
thats just a couple of examples of the society we live in i believe it was brought on by the availability of the internet people getting information immediately. this is a good thing and also a bad thing.
back on topic, this is a great addition to home infact this is one of the things i was hoping sony would incorporate into home. a comment left by someone earlier regarded this as useless and it would be easier to get the info simply from downloading the videos and what not. well those videos often times require a day to be uploaded and most times are in resolutions so low that they are very pleasant to watch. with home you can be there the day its happening maybe infact even while it is happening. when you are watching a video your by yourself in most cases even if you have friends with you they might not be interested, while your in home however you are surrounded by hundreds of people whom care very much which is a great position to start a converstation with a stranger who might end up being a friend later down the road. that is what home is being built for, social interaction a place where playstation users can meet new friends.
bravo sony bravo…….now just hurry up and release the darn thing…….

Does anyone care about Home anymore? All we see is these pics and a tiny fraction of PS3 users get to mess around in it. They will probably still be showing us previews in 2011.

it’s really nice to see how home is coming along, but is it really useful and constructive to show off something that the majority of ps3 users are currently closed out from?
Deny the users a service promised months ago and then show them what they are missing out on
There’s nothing wrong with having an open beta or steadily rolling out the closed one to gradually test the service and welcome in more users you know.

@36. They really should get that done in europe, I see no point in underdelivering in Europe AGAIN. Why do they give us small things like recording features (even though we have the smallest pre-installed hard drives) and then take away the games????

The will not listen as Home will turn out to be just a mass of adverts trying to sell you stuff you don’t need.
They are mascarading it as some sort of innovative social network thingy but the stark reality is that it is designed by psycologists who are experimenting with best way to pressure us into parting with our hard earned.
It is immoral and sick that they do this but do it they will and the worst part is it will probably have no age limits so minors will be mercilessly subjected to their morally dubious high pressure sales techniques.

@32 mikes - you lucky dog.:) mind you, as an ex secondlifer/worlds/there/imvu user i can’t really get that excited about Home, it just looks like more of the same to me. OK, so it’s (going to be) integrated on the ps3 and that’s a nice touch like the store is now and have some interesting features like the above.. but i guess the rest of us loyal devoted fans who stood in the rain on launch day to spend a small fortune will have to wait.

I’m sick to death of waiting. Release home right now or I won’t like you anymore!!!
I really don’t care about the fancy graphic, I just want to communicate with other PS3 users. Even if each person was just a different colored pixel and we could move around a 2D map. At least that would be something.

So funny that those were the demands only a year back - now we DEMAND NEW EVERYTHING but don’t mess with it too much or ELSE ! and the riots between certain releases are a media joke and is probably used by Sony as a way to hmmm see what we want cuz we really don’t let up til we get what we want and decide if it’s Yay and use it for a week, or Nay blist it and never look back, lol.
