So, you all asked the questions and Paulina Bozek was on hand to give the answers. Sorry it took a few more hours than intended but there were a lot of questions. Over to Paulina.
1. Will all the tracks from SingStar Vol 1 & 2 be downloadable from SingStore and when will this happen?
‘Licensing music for digital distribution is a different process to that of the disc-based product. We are working hard at clearing tracks for the SingStore and will continue to clear as many tracks as quickly as possible. When Vol 2 is released a number of tracks from the disc-based product will also be available to buy in the SingStore.’
2. Will the Harmony Mode on SingStar Vol 2 be available to owners of the first SingStar blu-ray disk? Will this be as a downloadable upgrade and will user’s be charged for it?
‘The new Harmony mode will be available as a free upgrade via the PlayStation®Network. It will be compatible with the specially selected duet tracks. Once the upgrade goes out, we’ll be making more of these songs available in the SingStore, and there is a great selection on the vol. 2 disc.’
3. Will the new tracks be in HD?
‘SingStar tracks feature the artists’ original music videos. We’ve gone for a lot of classic party tunes from different decades on this vol. 2 disc so HD is not a possibility for many of these.
We’re continuing to work with Record Labels to get HD videos wherever possible. At the moment, there still aren’t a lot of Music Videos being shot in HD but when they are, we’ll have them. Otherwise, we do a lot of extra video processing to make sure we get the Standard Def videos looking as good as possible.’
4. Will SingStar Vol 2 include remote play and the option to upload videos to the PSP™?
‘Remote play allows you to browse, stream, purchase and remotely launch downloads from the SingStore. You can also visit your profile on My SingStar Online and view other people’s performances in the SingStar community.
The main point of this feature is to let players cue up their tracks, get them downloading during the day and be ready for them to play that evening. The access to MSO allows players to show and share their best and funnies moments via their PSP – it’s another window into the community platform, which has turned out to be very entertaining!
You can’t upload your videos via PSP though, that would require a PSP camera and it’s not something we’re focused on at the moment.’
Connectivity – SingStar Vol 1 & SingStar Vol 2
1. Will players need to swap between discs 1 and 2 or can tracks be uploaded to the PS3 hard drive? How / will the two discs work together?
‘As with SingStar on PlayStation 2, players can swap between discs and play the 30 tracks from each disc. This is done by entering the carousel, pressing select on the controller and following the onscreen instructions.
SingStar tracks from the disc cannot be stored on the PLAYSTATION® 3 hard drive. The main reason for not storing discs on the HDD is security – we need a system that reliably verifies that the songs have only been saved once – i.e. it’s not being passed around – very difficult to do reliably.
There is some benefit of having them on disc in that they don’t fill up your HDD! But we do understand the desire to play tracks from different discs so hopefully the disc swap feature makes this a little faster and easier. We’re going to continue looking for ways to make this easier and more convenient.’
2. Will songs already downloaded and accessed on the first PS3 SingStar be accessible when players use the second disc?
‘Yes, every track downloaded from the SingStore will appear in your carousel and be available to play as normal.’
SingStore
1. How many tracks are available at present on the SingStore? The release claims there are 300.
‘Following the April 18th update the SingStore has 372 tracks available to download across the different languages. Over 200 of these are in English and players can access all of the different languages via the Search option. We expect another 80 tracks in the store by mid May.’
2. How frequently are new tracks going to be added to the SingStore?
‘New tracks are added every two weeks. Everybody behind the scenes is working really hard and fast to get more tracks added – we’re really happy to be at 372 songs and expect the SingStore to only get bigger and better over the rest of the year.’
3. How many tracks are you expecting to have on SingStore by the end of the year?
‘We’ll be adding approximately 50 songs a month to the SingStore, so if you do the math, we’ll be well over 500 by the end of the year. ‘
4. Why are there songs which appeared on SingStar in the SingStore?
‘We have had over 1500 songs on SingStar PS2 over the last few years. We’ve had some of the best songs and artists of all time and they all belong in the SingStore, regardless of whether or not they have already appeared on PS2. Our statistics show that players own an average of 2 or 3 of the PS2 discs, which means there are hundreds of songs which many players have never played or bought. Therefore it doesn’t really make sense to call these songs ‘old,’ or ‘recycled.’
The most downloaded song on the SingStore is ‘Europe’ The Final Countdown’ which appeared on SingStar 80s over 2 years ago. These songs are still the best, most fun and most wanted, it doesn’t matter if they’ve appeared on SingStar PS2.
But we are listening to current feedback and are busy behind the scenes to get brand new songs which have never appeared on SingStar into the SingStore. At the moment there are 90 new songs there and we’ll continue to grow this.’
5. Why should users buy SingStar Vol 2 when they already have access to SingStore?
‘We are allowing SingStar fans to make that choice themselves. SingStar appeals to a wide audience who like to consume media and games in many ways. While we have been overwhelmed by the success of the SingStore, we are conscious that there is a huge audience out there who still prefer to purchase their products on disc. Therefore we will continue to release downloadable and disc-based products.’
6. Are there going to be any developments or enhancements to the SingStore over the course of the year?
‘We are constantly working on ways to enhance the SingStar experience. Although
The most important thing to us right now is growing the SingStore catalogue with more great songs. That’s our #1 priority. There will also be feature and functionality enhancements to both SingStore and My SingStar Online and we’ll bring you more news on that in due course. ‘
Product
1. When will wireless mics be available?
‘We know SingStar fans are enthusiastic about the possibilities of wireless mics. However, we want to ensure that we are using the best possible technology, while maintaining an accessible price point for our consumers.’
2. Will there be a SingStar Vol 3 on disc?
‘Yes, we will release a vol. 3.’
3. Will you ever phase out discs completely?
‘We want to ensure that consumers have as much choice as possible so as long as there is demand we will offer both options.’

wow.. now im just isnt very dissapointed anymore. tnx for clearing a few questions ThreeSpeech

I have a question - will we ever get a game where you can use both the singstar mics alongside Guitar hero controllers!
If only such a game existed!…just imagine…singing…guitars…may aswell add in a drum kit! could easily call it pop group….garageband…..the possibilities!
Comment by JohnSketch — Apr 17, 2008 @ 3:35 pm
Thank you, but this shouldn’t have been that difficult. You should have been able to anticipate these questions before your announcement to avoid another uproar.
Your 372 songs, 200 in english is a total cop out though, you have deliberately stretched the meaning, you know that we mean songs in English so don’t be deliberately obtuse about it.
I sincerely hope that the individual songs from vol 2 you put on the store amount to less than the cost of the disc otherwise you are totally defeating the purpose of your Singstore.
How about some compensation for original Singstar owners for the comlete farce you made of the launch and the subsequent public relations disasters to which you only respond when there is a public outcry?
You really are doing more damage to your now shredded reputation and must seek to repair your customers shattered trust.
Comment by Ton Capone — Apr 17, 2008 @ 3:39 pm
Disapointing how Vol 2 isn’t being released as a download pack in it’s entirity . It would make real sense for those who prefer downloads, and be more profitable for sony to release vol2 as a ‘Song Pack’ for the same price as the retail CD. This way retailers and distributors don’t get a cut and it’s money in the bank for Sony.
It seems a total waste for PS3s to have so much storage potential but Sony are not taking enough advantage of it. Kudos for GT5:P & Warhawk being available as a download, just keep it up and stop the double standards.
I am pleased that they are not totally locking out early adopters by offering the harmony mode as a download

ACtually I have a problem concerning singstar, I had bought one song from singstore, then my ps3 crapped out and i had to exchange it.
Now when i try to download the song, it tells me ’song already purchased, download it from past history’ or sth like that.
When I go to that past history however, it tells me ‘the song is associated with another system’
What can I do?

Re: My Singstar Online and the PSP…do you mean you can remote control your PS3 and view your ingame profile or do you mean use the PSP web browser to access the content online…if so can I access my profile using my PC’s browser??!
Re: PSP and uploading videos….my original question was will we be able to export our vids on my PS3 to my PSP or even just as an MPEG/AVI etc….so I can upload to YouTube for example…..I dont know if my question was lost in translation.
cheers!

not this crappy try of a question, especially the answer
‘We know SingStar fans are enthusiastic about the possibilities of wireless mics.”
who put it in our head anyway???, yes it was you,not the fans…
again why are 95% of the store filled with bands nobody in the rest of the world have heard of and do we have to pay the full price for the same unknown track as e.g Europe-final C..
short thanx for the answers,

Darkos87 i had the same problem but i had bought 20 tracks when my ps3 broke..hre is what you have to do phone sony tell them about your ps3 breaking and about the singstar problem ..what they then do is take your psn name, ps3 serial code they then have to make your new console the active one on singstore and refund back to your wallet the price of tracks..it then wipes singstar history and you can buy tracks again. takes a couple of days but works.as i have bought 50+ tracks now on mine.

Firstly, thanks to Three Speech for getting some answers. Some of the answers are good, some of them aren’t.
I’m feel like I am fairly typical Singstar player: a reluctant man with a wife and daughter that love the game, and now I kinda love it, too. It’s fun, and I was pleased with how the Singstore was developing. I’ve downloaded many songs, and I’ve spent a lot of money, but the purchases have been enjoyed by my family and friends, so I felt it was money well spent. The convenience was perfect; a little too perfect, indeed, for my wallet…
Singstar 2 destroys that opinon in one fell swoop.
This is what I would have expected: Singstar 2 would be downloadable as an extra for those with Singstar 1, and it would cost the same as the Blu-Ray RRP; or I could download some of the component parts, but the combined cost would be higher. This all seems sensible to me. I’d download the full pack — sorted, convenient, very much what I would expect for my PS3.
Instead, I either have to buy a second Blu-Ray product and have damnably annoying changes of the physical media to access different songs — i.e.: not happening; I will not do this; this generation is the lazy generation, and I epitomise that — or I will be able to download some of the tracks, but not all, and some of the functionality, but not all (it seems the PSP functions are not downloadable — which sucks, as I have two PSPs).
Do I have that right?
If so, I am very disappointed, and so is my wife. This is not what we thought we were buying in to. It all feels very last generation, and very inconvenient.

Comment by terrortime — Apr 17, 2008 @ 8:23 pm
I’m not going to be purchasing this one for the very same reasons Hapimeses isn’t. The whole point of SingStar PS3 was the Store. Nothing else. If this wasn’t the main point why bother with PS3? PS2 SS games work fine, and it’s now pretty much set in stone that this is how Sony are going to pursue the PS3 version.
People who bought the PS3 version did it BECAUSE of the Store, not because it was a good use of PS3.
Shame, although I shall be swaying to Carribean Queen tomorrow! LOL.
As for the 300 songs in English, I’ve got to say that Singstar is a European game. Did Sony ever promise 300+ ENGLISH songs?
Finally, props to ThreeSpeech for getting answers from Sony!
Comment by Cho — Apr 17, 2008 @ 9:27 pm
Thanks for clearing up everything
To all the complainers though, I suspect many users of Singstar are ones who rent it out from the local video store for a fun night and wouldn’t dream of purchasing it. For those people, why would they care about the SingStore when they are paying for songs they’ll probably never use, and who’s going to bother spending time during a party downloading songs? Would those somewhat casual players even know/care about the SingStore?
In a perfect world, London Studio would clear the songs for both digital distribution AND for including on the disk (why negotiate twice?). But I’m happy to hear that there will at least be a number of songs from Vol. 2 available.
Comment by Daniel — Apr 17, 2008 @ 9:42 pm
@Daniel - Why bother with the PS3 version in that case, when they can easily get a PS2 version with better suited songs for a party night?
I still say that the majority of PS3 buyers knew about the store and bought it for that reason.
I do agree on the licensing matter though… Oh for that perfect world where big record companies do the right thing!
Comment by Cho — Apr 17, 2008 @ 10:07 pm
Thanks Three Speech and Paulina. I’ll be honest - this is better than I expected. I would be prepared to pay for added features like Harmony Mode if they added playability to the game.
I was upset at the original announcement, but this was because I had already bought SingStar, and didn’t want to buy another. I wanted a one-disk game.
The answers to the questions have reassured me that:
- the new features introduced will be made available (as mentioned above - free). As I said before, I’m happy to pay for things I want, and I’m glad this is free, although I probably would have paid.
- many of the new songs will be available for download. I’m happy about this, I wouldn;t want a ’song pack with them all in, I’m guaranteed to think 10-15 of them are crap and I’ll pay for the ones I like).
That was really it. If I had a gripe it was that deals for all tracks weren’t done for disk and digital download at the same time. This is a small gripe.
Thanks again Three Speech for the answers. I will confidently say that anyone who disagrees with this decision is a cock - seriously. It is a good thing. If you need an ambassador I’ll take that on for nothing more thank expensies.
Comment by TheFamousKevin — Apr 17, 2008 @ 10:16 pm
Is it just me that feels that the majority of people who will buy thins wouldnt even consider visiting a gaming blog. I’m not one to moan, but i find myself rolling my eyes every time i visit this site to find yet another drab update about the new Singstar.
Comment by Dan Clarke — Apr 17, 2008 @ 10:17 pm
Thanks three speech for getting these answers to us. There’s been quite a silence from the singstar team over the last wee while, and its great to finally get some communication. Still not a word on the now legendary vocal lag problem, and nothing on the potential to use ps2 discs in the ps3. If disc swapping is possible, and licensing is different for disc based products, then they could kill two birds with one stone by allowing us to use our ps2 discs. As the woman says: ‘over1500 songs’ - even if it was only 60GB owners buying them, don’t they want to increase their sales? I for one would be buying some more ps2 discs tomorrow!
Comment by Tom F — Apr 17, 2008 @ 10:59 pm
I would like to say that while I am grateful to ThreeSpeech for getting SOME answers (god alone knows there seem to be precious few of them flowing out of SCEE), I would add that they seem to be asked in a very ‘please don’t be mad’ kind of way. I want someone to really kick some ass. Ask why they promised 1300 songs or whatever it was and have totally failed to deliver or why they are releasing a second product. We all know the only answer is to wring money out of the market with no concern for early adopters but I want them to get nailed down about that!
Comment by TheShirts — Apr 18, 2008 @ 6:09 am
You know that many poeple don’t have internet access on their PS3s? A disc is the only way they can get new songs and functionality. And they have already explaining the licensing issues involved.
Comment by John — Apr 18, 2008 @ 6:53 am
Thanks for answering the questions.
Sony, do really need to start delivering on “promises”. but…
A couple of points some people don’t seem to understand.
1.a lot of PS3 owners are kids who’s parents buy games for them, if they were buying singstar they may not realise PS2 versions work on PS3 and so would buy the relevant version for their console.
2.These same people don’t have PS3′ hooked up to the net and so can’t access store.
3.Most people don’t care, as long as they can get a few tunes to have a laugh, drunk, at a party.
It always amazes me how vocal and angry people get over feeling jipped, BY A KARAOKE GAME. And even more worrying it’s mostly fella’s … what has the world come too ???
Thanks again ThreeSpeech.

Comment by Marius — Apr 18, 2008 @ 7:40 am
@ TheShirts (28)
Sony already answered those questions - they weren’t able to put as many tracks onto the store as was originally planned due to licensing issues. In terms of releasing a second disc - of course they were always going to do this! What happens, for example, if someone wants to buy into the SingStar franchise a year after the original disc came out? You seriously expect them to go buy the original, with dated songs, etc?? By releasing a second disc, Sony are keeping new potential customers happy, as well as those whose PS3s aren’t connected to the internet. And the Q&A above states that the harmony feature and a number of tracks from Vol. 2 will be available as downloads when the disc launches anyway…
Comment by Sackgirl — Apr 18, 2008 @ 8:01 am
For those that may think that I’m complaining about Singstar2 being on Blu-ray: I’m not. In fact, I think it is a great idea, especially as it seems likely to broaden sales of the game and add some cool new features.
All I am complaining about is how damnably inconvenient it is. I do not want to do the whole disc-swapping thing to access different songs. That is very, very PS2, and makes the Singstore somewhat irrelevant.
Placing all of SS2 as a download for those with SS1 on the Singstore resolves all of my issues. As I said, I’m happy to pay for it (I know others won’t be, but I am), and I’m upset that it isn’t an option. It seems a no-brainer to me.
So, as I said, I will not buy SS2, even though I do want what it provides. For me, swapping discs is not an option for a fun party game that should be about convenienace and ease-of-use.
Daft decision, assuming I have perceived the situation correctly, which it appears I have.

Re: “It always amazes me how vocal and angry people get over feeling jipped, BY A KARAOKE GAME. And even more worrying it’s mostly fella’s … what has the world come too ???”
These are the same fellas that try to justify the cost of a PS3 with the carrot of “SingStore” for their respective (female) partners.
I disagree that “a lot of P3 owners are kids”; as the quantity of game titles available so far have not been child-friendly, but if this were the case, it may explain why there has not been any plans for a “Michael Jackson” edition [@31]
And do you really think that Sony would want to promote drunken SingStar sessions to kids?
Then again, if they are at home with their ‘homies’, they are not on the streets with their ‘streeties’ causing trouble, so it’s swings & roundabouts, no… it’s not… as there are none of those left due to health & safety political correctness nonsense. But I digress…
Seriously, if you are unhappy with what’s available, don’t buy it. Stick to Volume I & stick to downloads only. Ignore the fact Volume II exists. If there were no plans to release it would you still be as unhappy? If you bought “Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas” would there be any point buying “Rainbow Six: Vegas 2″? I know a lot of people who would think that both purchases are essential.
Around 50 tracks being added to SingStore on a monthly basis (if you’ll pardon the non-European phrase “you do the math”) is a huge undertaking considering the amount of work that must go into each production (artist/label clearance, video transfer, note transposition, graphic assets, and so on), but I would still like to propose a “serial number” registration system on each new volume (like I suggested in comment #48 of [ http://threespeech.com/blog/?p=1008 ]) in order to lay the way for the provision of downloadable tracks being made available (for free) if the same track has been purchased on a Blu-ray edition.
And again, I feel that our set-up at home is non-typical as we own all the previous SingStar [PS3] releases (except the R’n’B edition… as we don’t ‘get’ that kinda groove… oh, and the Bollywood edition got a thumbs-down too), and we will continue to do so. It is far easier to take a selected game disc & a set of microphones (wired, or otherwise) to somebody else’s house for a session rather than having to carry a PS3 with integral hard drive chocked-full of party tunes.
Now, if you could remotely connect to another owner’s PS3 hard drive from a remote hard drive & play their tracks, then… hey, we’d have a product called “Homeâ€.
BFN,
fp.

What about the question I’ve seen over and over and over again in many a forum-
Why aren’t there more songs from PS2 SingStar on the store?
Personally, I won’t be buying Volume 2 as I only ever find a few songs on each disc release that my friends and I will enjoy. Even releasing Vol 2 as a Song Pack would not be good enough for me, as I’d still end up with a load of crap tunes that are so not up my street.
But if they are all released individually, I’ll get a couple of them.
But what I REALLY want, and have wanted from day 1, is the few songs from PS2 SingStar to be available on the store. Every update it seems there’s another Maximo Park song. Who the hell even likes them? And Billy Joel, for goodness’ sake?
I would so love to see The Smiths, Queens of the Stone Age, Nirvana, Kings of Leon… songs from PS2 that I’ve been waiting for because I was, like many others. under the impression that they’d be in the SingStore from day 1…

Thanks ThreeSpeech for obtaining the answers… I can appreciate it must be hard to get answers out of company reps… they’re too political and avoid the direct questions, but kudos for trying!
I reckon I’ll probably buy SS1 & 2 on blu-ray… yes it’d be nice to get the latest stuff as a download, but I don’t really see it as that much of a pain…. when playing Guitar Hero I have to swap discs to play 2 and 3…. ok, at times I can’t be arsed but it doesn’t really ruin my entertainment value.
It would’ve been nice to get a firm date on the release of SS2 and wireless mics, however I suppose these can be hard to nail down when deadlines shift etc.
Once again, thanks ThreeSpeech, I appreciate your efforts! It’s a shame SCEE don’t do likewise!

I’m not a singstar owner, but am a regular reader here. From all the comments and complaints which are constantly posted here and then re-posted, and re-posted again, I expected that the singstore had maybe 30 or 40 songs on it.
Turns out it’s 372, and over 200 of them in English. Surely it’s not just me who can see that that’s a *lot* of songs, and is something to be happy about.. rather than to complain, again. And again.
And again?
And yes, wireless mikes I’m sure would be cool, but they’re simply a product which is not out yet.
There are plenty of things which would be cool but aren’t out yet.. why the constant complaining about the mikes?
I never understand all the whinging which goes on in these comments, I guess you need something to fill the time while you wait for your 200 songs to download, right?

[...] As far as new songs for the SingStore goes, Sony’s London Studio are aiming to add “approximately 50 songs a month to the SingStore.” A decent number, but we’re looking for quality over quantity, which means fewer updates like today’s, please. Listen i really really want someone to listen to this, I just bought my PS3 in Australia ok anyway i bought the 40 GB one and its the only one they have on offer and unfortunately they have no backwards compatibility whatsoever anyway getting to my point, I really loved the PS2 Singstar and it was literally my favorite game on PS2 lol it was just a great fun party game BUT i really wanted to play my singstar games from the PS2 on my PS3 but to no avail, what i would really love is the ability for the PS3 to unlock the songs on the Singstar disks or atleast when u buy the new singstar ps3 disks have the ability to use the songs from the PS2 games via the disk swap method or please please please if no other option let me play the PS2 singstar games on the PS3 even on the 40 GB model!!! i’d love sony forever and ever lol and like if someone is reading this from sony maybe u could bring this up at the next team meeting!!!

I can’t wait for wireless mics to come out, this is the only thing stopping me from purchasing Singstar on the PS3.
I don’t like the idea of having my PS3 pulled off the hi-fi stack when a Singstar party get wild and the mics are attached.

@40,
from the 200 english songs its over 150 songs from bands the majority of the world never heard about, creating a 50 songs (which are the same 50 if you take it to the 372,making the % even smaller)
its like the impact of a worldwide release of hans boomsel and the tiroller muzik connection EP..
sony always promisses a lot,but fills a litte

I do appreciate the trouble to provide us with answers, I really do. It’s just that I was hoping for better ones. Right now its like everything I hoped for just got aswered “no, we’re not going to do that”.
Fine, just don’t expect me to buy it then.
It’s a shame, because Singstar is great fun. I’d rather have a significant improvement (being able to donwload songs is not enough) over the PS2 version though. And I really don’t feel that’s too much to ask.
It has to do with cutting budgets, I’m sure. But why can’t Sony see that a bigger investment in a proper must-have product pays off in the end? Even when you are the only one bringing it. Learn from Nintendo and their quality standards.

its good to offer the harmony feature as an update to singstar. It would have been nice for sony to mention this in their singstar 2 promo. not putting all the ‘new’ songs on the store is a bit poor though.

So, say I’m sitting here with all the songs in the carousel that are on Singstar Vol 1 and all the songs I’ve purchased, if I purchase Vol 2, will the carousel display all the songs I’ve purchased, all the songs that are on the Vol 2 disk and all the songs on the Vol 1 disk as well and then ask me to insert the correct disk if I decide to play a song that appears on the other disk?
…Otherwise the interface is going to feel broken if i can’t see all the songs that I have at the same time, it’s one of the things that I liked the best about Singstar PS3…

This is some crap… Exchanging discs or how you like to call it “swapping” this is a new generation of gaming!! It’s not a ps2 game anymore it’s a PS3! I love my PS3 singstar but you guys are shooting yourselves on the foot if you guys don’t release MOST of Vol 2 songs on singstore. I RESPECT YOUR WANTING TO HAVE “VARIETY/CHOICE” FOR CONSUMERS BUT WHAT ABOUT “CHOICE” FOR YOUR SINGSTORE CONSUMERES/USERS??? WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD OUR SONGS IF WE WANT!!! WE CAN ALWAYS UPGRADE OUR HDD IF WE NEED MORE SPACE!!
I know it’s not like any of my venting will change whatever your company does but at least I know that I tried to let you guys know my concerns before you lose my business…

Just a quick question… do you have any news on when the update will come out which will enable disc swapping to PS2 singstar discs from within the PS3 game (non-BC model)? Cheers.

What about totally new artists for SingStore? For example, as far as I’m aware there are no Mariah Carey songs, no Beatles songs, no Frank Sinatra … can’t they add some of these artists … I could go on … Stevie Wonder … Prince … Donna Summer … Olivia Newton-John, and what about a SingStar songs from the movies!!!
Just dreaming! but would really like to see a mariah song on singstar
