Just had some very exciting news from PlayStation on Go!View. Read the official press release below…
This summer, PlayStation and Sky will launch Go!View, the first official PlayStation Portable® (PSP™) video download service in Europe. Go!View will provide a wealth of programming from the worlds of entertainment, comedy, sport and movies for PSP™ owners to enjoy in addition to their usual gaming experience.
Go!View will allow PSP™ owners to create their own individual TV schedule on their PSP™ – to watch whenever and wherever they choose. The Sky and PlayStation joint venture has developed a service that makes portable, video-on-demand a reality.
Go!View gives PSP™ users the chance to watch their favourite programmes on either a subscription or pay-per-view basis. Once registered on the Go!View website, users will be able to easily download content to the PSP™ via their PC.
“Go!View allows PSP™ users to take advantage of a unique service, adding another dimension to PSP™’s offering” said Owen Jenkinson, Go!View Marketing Manager. “The opportunity to watch top TV and movies on-the-go and on-demand will allow PSP ™ owners to enjoy their favourite entertainment on their own terms, enhancing the PSP’s offering as a portable gaming console.”
“Go!View is a perfect marriage of great content and leading on-demand technology from Sky and the best portable device to watch it on from PlayStation”, Alison Turner, Managing Director, Go!View.
Go!View is the latest addition to the Go! portfolio, designed to supplement PSP™ owners’ gaming experience and give users more flexibility, choice and control. In addition to Go!View’s video download service, users also have access to Go!Messenger, a wireless communication package for PSP™ and Go!Cam, a camera attachment for the PSP™.

Good news, this could plug the hole left when Sky priced Sky One etc. out of Virgin’s hands, I have Virgin services and ‘lost’ Lost, 24, Prison Break etc. back then.
In that context, I’m more interested in Play TV - reminds me, must get an arial installed for that..

Pfft! Sky! I have virgin also and rarely ever bother with the thing - the 20mb broadband is where it’s at for me, probably the easiest way to watch the shows i love is via the internet.
PSP remote played to PS3 connected to internet going to ps3iplayer for the win!

This would’ve worked better if it was offered to the PS3, with the option on the PS3 to eventually convert the downloads into PSP format and be able to take them with you.
As it stands, seriously, how many people are going to bother, when they’ve already go the capability to download such content from the Internet onto their PCs and convert it into PSP format.
This also expects everyone to be walking around with PSPs that have 4GB cards in them, because anything less means you have to start deleting stuff after a while.
One thing that this press release is not mentioning (and neither is ThreeSpeech) is whether the downloaded content with be time-bombed or not.
Go!View?
More like Go!Stuff Yourselves…

I’m also on Virgin, and I don’t miss any of Sky’s programmes. Instead, I get them from the US with BitTorrent, and see them BEFORE Sky customers…

Agreed they need something like this on the PS3 not the PSP. Sure it’s nice for PSP owners, but when do you honestly want to spend an hour watching a PSP screen? On a flight or on a train… other than that rarely.
If Sony really want to make the PS3 a big media device then it needs a couple of tweeks. iPlayer has to work (properly!), the music needs more organisation options really and some more video codecs wouldn’t go a miss. With those in place it’d be mighty strong.

Sounds good for those of use that often find board during long trips away but please remember that not all PC come with Windows, some of them come with stuff like Mac and Linux you know.

I get the train every day so this sounds good to me, as long as it’s not too expensive! And why has my PSP got wifi but then I have to use my pc to download stuff? And I’m sure they’re working very hard on all the other stuff (psp iplayer, play tv, better music\file organisation etc). Aren’t they..? :-s

I agree that this would have been much better on the PS3. Don’t have and don’t care that I don’t have a PSP .

Why cant they bring this service to the PS3.
Comment by whoelse — Apr 28, 2008 @ 4:33 pm
i don’ t use the pay-per-view movies etc. using my virgin box on my biiig tv at home so i doubt very much i’ll ever use this, especially seeing as we have to download to a pc first! whoever thought that would work needs to be sacked.
the only thing that matters now is that Amazon have Dispatched GTA IV for me today
tomorrow at work is gonna feel damn long.

lame! Needs to be on PS3 and in New Zealand
Comment by carl — Apr 28, 2008 @ 5:01 pm
Yeah, this is a bit lame, and really don’t know how many people will take up the service, but I see is as a marketing thing. It’ll cost next to nothing to anyone but the punter in question.
If you’re the sort of person who has a PSP, and are going to be using it for more than gaming, then you’re most likely going to be at least a little switched on. Thus, you’re going to already have a method of supplying yourself with these favourite programmes.
But hey ho.

@ ThreeSpeech:
Looks like everyone agrees with me that it should’ve been done for the PS3 instead. Something for you to take back to Sony and tell them that they should’ve spent the development time/effort into improving PSN Europe instead.
As per my first post above, is the content being offered time-bombed?

I find it strange that people can moan about an optional new service!
Firstly more people have a PSP then a PS3 so it makes more commercial sense to have the service on that device. Also hardware sales don’t really match software sales so it seems likely that a lot of PSP owners use it for media rather then gaming.
The PS3 will have PlayTV in July so freeview will be available for that with transfer to the PSP. Adding Sky programs will then give you access to all TV for the PSP. I do use the train it’s amazing how many people have a PSP.
Some people don’t want to commit criminal offences by illegally downloading copyrighted material.

Not moaning Snifer, simply suggesting how they could improve in future. Constructive criticism is what it’s called.

“Also hardware sales don’t really match software sales so it seems likely that a lot of PSP owners use it for media rather then gaming.”
To ascertain the reason why PSP UMD sales are not matching PSP hardware sales try “Googling” for “Dark_AleX” or “Team M33″.
