Metal Gear Solid Online and Call Of Duty 4 maps at the same time! ThreeSpeech has been shooting bad guys all weekend and now it’s feedback time. Either you’re fiercely loyal to one title, or you’re so trigger-happy you got both. What we want to know is - what do you think and, most importantly, which one is best?

Uhm…. While Killhouse sucks, the Auto-Aim on MGO is a pain… tough choice… Who cares though, I got GTAIV a day early!
Comment by Artiom — Apr 28, 2008 @ 5:12 pm
MGO has dozens of completely unique gameplay features and the Metal Gear universe is far more interesting to me.

Well - wish I could tell you about MGO - but continuously getting ‘unable to connect to server error something something 00000001. Hope I am not the only one, but any ideas, would be appreciated!!
Comment by CaptainKash — Apr 28, 2008 @ 5:51 pm
Well to be fair also, it’s a beta. Anyways MGO has vastly improved the controls, and gives you different firing methods (over the shoulder, auto and FSP). And is much more team based (SOP System) and can get very tense trying to beat the other team. There’s also so different modes, like the Sneaking mission, where somebody gets to be Solid Snake. CoD4 was fun for a while, but after you get to prestige mode, it starts to loose it’s intrest.
I am a bit biased since I’m a huge huge huge huge Metal Gear fan, I’ve beaten all the cannon games (mean the ones on MSX and Portable Ops) and paid very close attention to every cutscene.
Comment by Christian Marsham — Apr 28, 2008 @ 5:53 pm
Was not a big fan of Call of Duty 4 multiplayer…
Comment by JohnSketch — Apr 28, 2008 @ 5:56 pm
MGO is just anoying, all those yelling sounds when folk die, horrible compared to gaming via xbox live
Comment by exprohound — Apr 28, 2008 @ 5:59 pm
Free beta that eclipses some full final games VS overpriced maps for a game i’m fairly bored with…
To be honest, it’s not a fair comparison as they are very different games.
Comment by TheShirts — Apr 28, 2008 @ 6:43 pm
I can’t be arsed trying to fight my way through the registration process again for MGO. Back to Warhawk, and just waiting for GTA to arrive.
Now then, am I allowed a little rant. Well, maybe it’s not a rant, but a little thing that has narked me of late, and I just wish there were something we could do about it. Allow me to elucidate. I seem to be completely lazy, not in any half arsed way, but it would appear that I can’t even be bothered to walk to my PS3 and change what ever disk is inserted. I mean that’s pretty lazy isn’t it? So, I end up playing only the latest disk based game, and what ever else I have on my HDD. This means that when GT5p arrived, Burnout stopped being played. Which curiously is what’s happened to each game prior to this too. Only at the start of my PS3 owning days when I was hungry for them all did I bother swapping.
So what’s to be done. What possibly can Sony do to ensure that I continue playing all of this rather special software, instead of just dropping them every other month for the next latest and greatest. Well let me tell you (I might as well, I’ve got this far aye?). Optional FULL HDD install. I want it. I want to stick my shiny disk into my machine, and install that bad boy so that for every more I need only select it from my list of games. We all know it makes sense. Hec, if I think back not too long, the Xbox (the orignal that MS dropped so quickly it’s silly) was modded so Xbox owners could just copy every game under the land onto their HDD should they have sufficient space. Here today, we’re being told that we can upgrade our HDD, but I haven’t got the need to yet. Come on Sony, give me a proper reason (actually, I can hardly say that seeing as my 60Gb is ninety percent full, but that’s not the point!)
Right then, I’ve finished my schpeal. Time to shoot people you know where. See you on the ground guys. Thanks for listening….

Tut tut, punctuation poor, spelling not too bad. Oh dear, when those fingers start, there’s no controlling them. Sorry about that!
Comment by LordOfRuin — Apr 28, 2008 @ 6:47 pm
I wandered away and started making a rather lovely cuppa, all the while thinking about the problems Sony might be having with a HDD install from the disk. It must be DRM sort of things. I install from my mates copy, that sort of thing. Then I realised that it doesn’t have to be that way. Sure you buy the game on a disk (is it disk or disc? Anyway…) but then optionally, you connect to the PSN, and from there, under your user you get the option to install, which downloads a wee installation program that makes a locked image on your HDD. It could work that way. I can’t see why not. Sony, if you hadn’t thought of this before and wish to explore this little gem of an idea, then feel free to do so. Just do it quick please. Thanks.
Again, sorry for the extended blethering.

TBO i can’t be bothered with the hassle of the MGO beta, if it’s any good i’ll get it when the full thing comes out, COD4 is good and i love the arcade mode but if i’m being really really honest i have NEVER played it online! well.. LAN games yes. but that’s not really online is it?
stop shouting at the screen.
there are only 3 games so far that are worth playing online. Warhawk, Motorstorm and Unreal Tournament. somehow they got it right, i like lobbies, seeing whos in what game being able to play with my mates and not total strangers. this was a big miss in GT:Prologue as far as i’m concerned.
yeah it’s great to just jump online and go right into a game but you may as well be playing bots if you cannot connect on a personal level to the other gamers.
UTIII wins the shooters just because of it’s adaptability, the old burger king tag line ‘have it your way’ springs to mind. take earlier for example, i downloaded the ‘flat’ map, which is a model of a room and you and 15 other nutters run around like crazed scale warhammer 40,000 models blowing the heck out of each other from under the coffee table, hiding behind the stereo, using candles for cover and camping out sniping from the fridge. and what did it cost? NADA! so much fun and a great scene with all the modders.
am really interested to see how GTA online turns out.

I have cod4 for pc and never really got into the MP
Having some fun with MGO Certain things annoy the auto aim is next to useless and i dont really think its needed anyway.
The game frustrated me but in a good way however perverse that may sound.
The screams are annoying
Comment by yxxxx — Apr 28, 2008 @ 9:19 pm
I played MGO for a bit but went back to COD and bought the maps. I agree with the screaming in Metal Gear - very annoying! COD just has me hooked, it’s the only thing that pulled me off Resistance MP. I still think Resistance has the best online set up - text chat, voice coms, separate channels for private chat, friends etc. It will take something special to replace COD online for me though.
Comment by Sympathy For — Apr 28, 2008 @ 9:36 pm
I’ve been hating on the MGSO beta since day one. It’s extremely clumsy for anybody who is actually good at precision games. It’s somewhere between and action game and an RPG the way that you have to focus on one target at a time rather than running and slashing through a group of enemies. It’s growing on me and I’m already bored with Call of Duty 4 but to be honest Metal Gear isn’t going to sell based on its online play.

I’m just waiting for GTA to be honest, double xp weekend was nice, but I ain’t paying 7 pounds for maps… no no no.

@ LordOfRuin (14):
It’s “disc”, as in Compact Disc.
Disk is used for Floppy Disk.
Good luck to all those getting and playing GTA-IV tomorrow - hope you enjoy it - and remember, your X360 counterparts will soon get exclusive extended episodic content.
I know which console I’d buy if I wanted to play GTA-IV…

my good i am loving mgo been playing it non stop well till mister postman comes this mornig then it down to being a gagsta till haze and grid comes out and i have had the map pcks for a bit as i got it on 360 and i thnk that mgo is so much better

@Zed Zee
Nothing better to do with your time than troll PS3 websites? Or is your Xbrick back at Microsoft again to be repaired. I’ll enjoy playing GTA on something that actually works, thank, whereas you can sit around jerking off waiting 3 weeks for the DHL man to come back.
Comment by Mike — Apr 29, 2008 @ 5:19 am
Well, since the COD4 map pack for switzerland (germanspeaking part) is fu**ed up - requires BLES00148 which was never sold in switzerland, instead the german BLES00149 was sold - no swiss player that bought the game officially can play the map pack.
So will I play MGS online beta?
Nope, to slow and complicated controls in my opinion.
I’ll stick with GTA IV!
Comment by McLogo — Apr 29, 2008 @ 5:48 am
Right I’m off down to the local HMV to get my copy
Comment by John — Apr 29, 2008 @ 6:03 am
ExBox360 owners will need the DLC later in the year because they wont have Resistance2, or Killzone2, or LittleBigPlanet, or Home, or much else that’s worth worrying about. There, that’s my contribution to the fan boy thing.
Disc. I knew that.
Comment by LordOfRuin — Apr 29, 2008 @ 6:14 am
@ All the comments about GTA DLC - I realise I’m gonna be called a fanboy so I will try to be reasonable but have you read the early reviews from independant (IE, not console specific) magazines and sites? They are all saying that the PS3 version is better lit, more realistic, busier and smoother. Also, the DLC is coming to PS3 after an exclusivity period which will most likely be 6 months (going on previous GTA exclusivity periods).
Evidently GTA is the first cross platform game which finds the limitations of the 360.
Comment by TheShirts — Apr 29, 2008 @ 7:11 am
MGO is really starting to grow on me. I didn’t like it at first, too slow (pacing wise, and game engine wise), but the new map and mode unlocked recently is just great!
I’ve not played as Snake yet, but have played as MkII and have killed Snake several times.
I just hope the final version has a more consistent framerate, more responsive controls and less lag.
Comment by Mister_G — Apr 29, 2008 @ 7:14 am
@12 best use of a HDD ever. I’ll join your fight to make that happen, brother.
I traded CoD4. At the end of the day I don’t really like the first person viewpoint, it makes me feel a little sick and I find it difficult to deal with having no peripheral vision.
MGO is cool, but hasn’t quite bitten me yet. The sheer thinking up different IDs (Konami, Game and Character) leaves someone with no imagination after years of playing too many video games feeling frustrated. Also, I was playing a team deathmatch yesterday and kept getting picked off by people hanging on the spawn points. I wish there was a way the PlayStation Eye would recognise me punching those people on the nose.
Until the postman arrives it is Folding@home all the way for me - I’m hoping that the karma gained from using my PS3 to save mankind from cancer will speed the postie up.
Comment by TheFamousKevin — Apr 29, 2008 @ 7:41 am
Well considering Konami stated only 2 maps would be released and its a free beta compared to a game you buy and therefore demands support from the developer… it just seems like a silly question.
Of course CoD4 has better maps it has a large number which is constantly updated with all styles covered,
From long range to close range.
Saying that MGO is fantastic the CQC really adds to the game… the faking on the ground can be so sneaky… the lock on sucks… the SOP system is an interesting take on modern warfare… and then the catapult
Also bare in mind COD4 is more like a war sim whereas MGO is and arcade based blood bath of fun.
So guess COD4 is fun and i will still play on occasion but MGO is just fantastic… when was the lastime you crocodile rolled a guy in any other game?
Comment by G4ogami — Apr 29, 2008 @ 7:46 am
mgo = aaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggghhhhh!
At least that’s all I hear when I play on there. Perhaps I’m a bit cr*p.
Comment by reakt — Apr 29, 2008 @ 8:12 am
I saved my money on COD4 as everyone else I know has a copy and I’ve got enough to be playing for now, rainy day I’ll pick it up. MGO online - yup the dying sound is ultra annoying, the game is stilted and not very engaging - yet. It is a beta, it’s not over yet.
Online game #1 as of yesterday was Warhawk, OBM is great and I hope more map packs are to come. Todat it might well be GTAIV, I’ll know more once my kid goes to sleep tonight…
Comment by MrJimmy — Apr 29, 2008 @ 8:28 am
MGO is OK, bit too slow and awkward aiming for me. I’ve played for about 4 hours but rarely felt ‘fulfilled’. There are good points, the ‘capture the frog’ gametype and the catapult but CQC is clumsy and frustrating. I think the single player will be great and hopefully the final MGO will be too.
COD4 on the other hand I find almost perfect. These people who say they’ve not bothered playing online are really missing out. To begin with I was getting fed up with all the screaming kids shouting nonsense down their mics but after a while joined the AVForums COD4 clan and it’s the best laugh ever. You really should try it. Also the new maps are cool, I like Killhouse for intimate shotgun action!!! Just a shame / joy that GTA4 will now be taking over my life!
Comment by Robothamster — Apr 29, 2008 @ 8:30 am
Well, I picked up GTA at 8, got home at 8:15, waiting 15 minutes for the game to install, and got in about 45 minutes before I had to go to work. I’m not that happy with it so far, even with the brightness at max it’s still too dark, and the cars handle like shit. Otherwise it’s ok though.
Comment by John — Apr 29, 2008 @ 8:53 am
@12/@13/@14 (LordOfRuin):
If you are not too lazy to go & make a beverage, why not make use of your new-found locomotion ability & move your PS3 console nearer to where you sit? Don’t forget to use the PS3 browser to buy a longer TV cable, or even move the TV nearer to you, first though [as afterwards may prove very tricky]. Alternatively, if you have reach of a telephone you could always ring somebody else to do this for you. Kill two birds with one uzi, erm, stone, and order a pizza & get the delivery driver to pick up the required lead for your TV in transit (or moped, or whatever).
Additionally, you could even invest in one of those stylish pieces of plastic as found in various Sunday newspaper magazine supplements to ‘house’ your beloved, but ‘un-love-ed’, Blu-ray collection & place this on top of your console for easy access. Of course you would need to lift your arm to reach for a case & have the energy to insert the game into the console, but think of this as exercise for the day. A small price to pay to ensure your future gaming for many more years. Gyms are for fat people. Stay at home & exercise your right arm only.
No, wait… what am I thinking? Why not just sit closer to the TV? Oh, I suspect you are one of those gamers from the current millennium with a new-fangled so-called High Definition screen with such a superior picture quality and size that you need to sit the equivalent of three football pitch lengths away from it to truly appreciate the experience. As somebody who still uses a 10 year old Cathode Ray Tube “fat” screen device, I can sit within 6 inches (man-size measurements) of it without any hassle. I sometimes forget how lucky you are! Sorry.
My 60Gb HDD (as in hard disk [with a 'k'] drive) regularly gets full to capacity & I have to offload the downloaded media I gain from the three major PlayStation Stores on a weekly basis.
Yes, I know I can upgrade to a larger drive, but my European release day console has never moved since it was unpacked… doing so may invoke the “out-of-warranty-Blu-ray-drive-is-dead” scenario that seems to becoming a more regular occurrence (if you read other forums… as if!).
I am with you on laziness due to the provision of a hard drive though. Every day I have the intention of playing a disc (as in compact, DVD, or Blu-ray disc [with a ‘c]) based title, but the convenience of “Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Online” (with new match types already available in Japan), “PixelJunk Monsters” (also with new levels; it isn’t just “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare” or “Metal Gear Online”!), or “Pain” (also with new content coming ‘soon’). Having these titles pre-installed & immediately available is too much for my tiny brain & muscle-wasting legs to cope with. A tip for the uninitiated here… never drink more in a gaming session that runs into the wee small hours than you have room to accommodate in any empty vessels nearby. And if anybody asks why the plants have died, or what the odd smell is coming from the vase, deny all knowledge. Any attempt to make an excuse about fertilizer is just going through the motions.
The ownership of Wii consoles aside, I blame the advent of the Internet with the increase in apathy towards doing stuff. That and the desire not to visit my ‘hood after dusk when the local hoodies are in force arguing the toss about whether the latest must-have game is better on the Xbox 360 or the PS3. Or both. Or neither.
However, from today all of those less-than-fragrant characters will be inside their homes (with their homies) getting up-to-speed (pursuit) with the latest street culture (read: crime & violence in various tempos including aggravated assault, & vehicle theft, all in a grand style) playing something that many insist is “the best game ever” (version IV) until the next version is released.
So, rejoice in the fact that should you need a longer cable for your TV, you can visit your local town centre without the fear of abuse for the next week until the ‘yoofs’ are back on the streets again.
Be careful out there…
BFN,
fp.

COD4 is a great game, but it doesn’t really do anything new. It’s just a fine FPS shooter.
MGO is genius.
It doesn’t take itself too seriously, adds real comedy value to the core MGS gameplay and makes for a truly FUN online experience. Awesome.
Comment by Tony Nibbles — Apr 29, 2008 @ 10:00 am
I still can’t get the thing to download (MGO)
Have tried plenty of times but always end up with a network error.
So COD 4 has it hands down

I’ve been a fan of Metal Gear since it’s first outing on the PS1, and I’ll be picking up MGS4, but unfortunatelt MGO at the moment just doesn’t seem worth it. It’s the third person view that kills it in my opinion. Metal Gear Solid was about the stealth, and although they’ve tried to carry across the same game mechanics, it just doesn’t feel “Metal Gear” to me. I found it amazingly hard to sneak up on people, because they’ve all got eyes in the back of their heads! Albeit short-sighted eyes, only allowing two to three foot vision, but when you see someone’s head pop into screen behind your character, you tend to react, killing the stealth of the moment.
I can’t highly praise the CoD4 maps either. I’ve only played Killhouse on a private three player free-for-all (with a hardcore set-up), which I found to be amazingly fun. But the other maps tend to be a bit more “Rambo” and less tactical assault. Although I’m sure that this will balance out when people learn the maps and what style of play is better suited to each map.
Comment by The-Unknown — Apr 29, 2008 @ 1:02 pm
For me MGO is one of the smoothest online experiences I’ve had. No lag problems, host migration that works and it’s VERY playable. The new sneak mode is awesome.O.K. it’s not the fastest gamepley, but then I also enjoyed Lost Planet which is similar “the men run like they’ve s**t their pants”(as my missus puts it) kind of way
For a Beta build, MGO is great, I’m looking forward to MGS4 now and I wasn’t particularly interested before.
