I thought with GT, there wouldn’t be much other content, but a nice update, all told. Have already got it off the US store and might have overlooked it, but didn’t see the new GTA trailer listed which really suprised me.

Comment by Estel — Mar 28, 2008 @ 4:34 pm
What’s the Reel Fishing then? Not heard about that one….. have to say I’ve enjoyed some of the smaller games from PSN Store… PixelJunk Monsters has been a real treat for £4! Think I’ll get GT5P on disc though… I like them cuz they’re shiny!
Comment by Monkey Rimmer — Mar 28, 2008 @ 4:34 pm
@5
Its the same price on the PSN as the retail version is - £24.99.
However, some retail outlets are choosing to reduce the price. If there was an alternative DLC provider ……..
Comment by Andy — Mar 28, 2008 @ 4:35 pm
Why is a digital download costing more than a game on physical media?
I honestly cannot comprehend this, could someone at SCEE or Threespeech tell me how this is possible?
Are they deliberately trying to offend me?
Comment by Ton Capone — Mar 28, 2008 @ 4:36 pm
SO… no price cut for all the trouble then.
you would think that it would cost the same as it is being sold in stores…
Im guessing the DIsc version needs the disc in the console to play.
tough decision,
Comment by Accordion — Mar 28, 2008 @ 4:40 pm
Woo - finally got an update - I hate them technical gremlins!
Three Speech - can you answer me a question - I downloaded the UT3 maps from the USA store lastnight and installed them but they didnt seem to appear when I booted my (pal) UT3 disc. Do you have to use the maps for your specific region?
Cheers!

Well will you look at that……an apology from Sony
Comment by Ther1n — Mar 28, 2008 @ 4:42 pm
The apology is appreciated. It’s not a bad update, GT5P is great (if overpriced), the demo is good and free maps for UT3 are great. Better late than never eh?!
Comment by uber1337 — Mar 28, 2008 @ 4:47 pm
Why didn’t you post us an update yesterday saying there was going to be a delay? That would have been useful.

Comment by MonkeyMajiks — Mar 28, 2008 @ 6:09 pm
Ton Capone: as people have pointed out, it’s the *same* price on PSN as the retail RRP. It’s just gives you, the consumer, a choice over where and how to buy the product.
Comment by Estel — Mar 28, 2008 @ 6:11 pm
Estel:
No, it means that the shop are still making a profit charging £18 for it despite the production costs of discs, cases and booklets etc.
This can only lead to the conclusion that SCEE are overcharging for something which had none of these extra costs thereby attempting to cheat their customers.
And I’ll tell you something else, I am sick of Threespeech answering questions like the guy who already owned GT5p asking about 2 player split screen, and then totally avoiding important and valid issues like mine.
This whole situation is totally unacceptable.
Comment by Ton Capone — Mar 28, 2008 @ 6:18 pm
@ Tom Capone:
Ever considered that it costs money to have download servers, ISP fees, network costs, support staff, development, testing, etc?
Sure, they’re making a profit. If you don’t like it, vote with your feet and chill out man!
Comment by Beezle Bob — Mar 28, 2008 @ 6:27 pm

Comment by komp — Mar 28, 2008 @ 6:33 pm
Tom, stop trolling - if you don’t like the price don’t buy it. You are very lucking that you have a PS3, it is your privilege to have the choice to be able to access the PSN store, not your god given right. Sorry, to get personal in these comments but your posts make you sound like a snotty spoiled brat.
Comment by lxd — Mar 28, 2008 @ 6:36 pm
Threespeech probably weren’t in a position to comment on SCEE’s pricing policy. Yes, it’s a semi-official blog, but if they don’t have the answers to your question, I doubt that they can respond. If Sony wanted to make an official statement regarding its pricing policies, it’s unlikely to be done via. a 3S comment.
Comment by Estel — Mar 28, 2008 @ 6:40 pm
@31
Support staff? Development? Testing?
After this fiasco you must be kidding if you think they’ve spent one thin dime on that!!!
@33
It is my right as a customer to express my disgust with the current state of affairs and this is the platform provided for that.
If this was the roll out of a simple preview for game I shudder to think how they will roll out a social networking programme such as Home, that will be a total disaster probably.
By the way, believe it or not they actually want you to downlaod the games as they are trying to stealthily snuff out the second hand game market as you win out of it and they don’t.
Think about it, you cannot trade in a download can you? or buy it cheaply second hand.
They want to win out of it and they want you, the customer who they pretend to be concerned about to foot the bill.
DISGUSTING.
Comment by Ton Capone — Mar 28, 2008 @ 6:43 pm
komp, the game description says: “One time fee for use of downloads on up to 5 activated PS3 systems”. I assume that means you can download the game 5 times. Possibly to 5 different system, but that I’m not sure of.
Comment by Zta — Mar 28, 2008 @ 6:43 pm

The RRP for retail was the same as the PSN price…it’s not SCEE’s fault if all the retailers reduced the price is it?
Ever heard of retaiulers losing sales/profits…ever considered that they’re undercutting the price because they’re afraid of not selling as many units as they’d like?
How dare SCEE etc etc…

Comment by Deano — Mar 28, 2008 @ 7:31 pm
The RRP should apply to bricks and mortar stores only. PSN should have it’s own pricing structure that should encourage people to buy it online. Sony must know that retailers will mark it down by 25-30%, like amazon. So Sony should put it on the PSN with a 35% discount. So if Amazon sell it for £18, then PSN should have it for £15. This will encourage a hell of a lot more people to buy it from the PSN store than the B&M stores.
Having said that, I always prefer physical media to virtual media, but I’m old and fuddy duddy like that. In this case there is no question that I would buy it from amazon rather than the PSN store.

Comment by terrortime — Mar 28, 2008 @ 7:50 pm
Ton kust shut up already. You don’t have a clue what you are talking about. Retailers are certainly getting slim rofits if any at all from this game. Get fucking use to the way game distribution works. I dont hear you bitching about Steam for the PC. Just shut up already. You have no dea what you are talking about and are talking absolute shit.
Comment by NinjaFridge — Mar 28, 2008 @ 8:00 pm
Hey, I’ve been hearing that the PSN download only works if you’re online and only works for the purchasing account - like Warhawk. Is this true? I don’t really mind the online bit but I expect all accounts on my PS3 to be able to play the game (offline at least).
Also, if you buy BR version what happens when it installs? Does it only work for the account active when it was installed or does it work for all accounts?
Thanks for any feedback here.
Comment by Kittens — Mar 28, 2008 @ 8:02 pm
@ 46 NinjaFridge
I do not know what Steam for the PC is and therefore cannot “bitch” about it.
In the same respect I have absolutely no idea how to “kust shut up already”.
You need to get the jelly out of your spine and stand up for yourself, your rights and your wallet laddie or you are going to turn out to be one supressed and bankrupt individual.
Comment by Ton Capone — Mar 28, 2008 @ 8:10 pm
Tom, Steam is what Xbox Live wants to be.
As for price the PSN store is the RRP - Amazon are just chosing to reduce their price. Also, while digital downloads remove cost of physical media that’s actually not a lot in bulk, and easily translates to cost of running servers, etc.
Before you meltdown again though I do agree that if I was Sony I’d anticipate the lower price and offer it for say 19.99 on PSN. I take your point of used games (although I never actually buy/sell used games myself) and if there is any truth in it then I’m actually surprised Sony don’t make PSN version cheaper to attract more sales away from re-sellable media.
Oh - and can someone pls confirm whether the damn think installs like Warhawk and only plays on one account?
Ta
Comment by Kittens — Mar 28, 2008 @ 8:15 pm
Ton.
The reason it costs the same as the retail version is due to pressure from the rtailers themselves. When Sony sold Warhawk cheaper over PSN, some retailers refused to sell the boxed copy and sent them back to Sony. They were backed into a corner.
Comment by dizzan — Mar 28, 2008 @ 8:19 pm
What’s the deal with Ton Capone?
Has he to be always angry?

Comment by Omaesan — Mar 28, 2008 @ 8:24 pm
@ 48 dizzan
It doesn’t cost the same as the retail version though dizzan.
They have been undercut on their own game!
If this isn’t a glaring sign of incompetence and idiocy I honestly don’t know what is.
Comment by Ton Capone — Mar 28, 2008 @ 8:26 pm
Ton
It costs the same ass the RRP. It is the retailers decision to cut the price and diminish their profit margin.
Trust me, I know that the retailers made Sony enter the agreement. And the agreement was Sony had to sell the PSN version at RRP or face stores boycotting the game.
I don’t agree with the price and Sony aren’t happy about it either. They wanted to sell the game cheaper, they just can’t. Retail stores are going to be the major hurdle in terms of digital distribution in the near future.(that and SCEE’s ability to release shit on time!!!!! :p )
Comment by dizzan — Mar 28, 2008 @ 8:32 pm
Dizzan’s right. Not only do the stores have the ability to boycott particular games but the hardware manufacturers rely on them for sales of consoles and accessories (which may be some way off being available as digital downloads). Until there is an easier way for hardware manufacturers to bypass stores for their hardware/accessories sales (Sony stores??!) you can expect digital versions of boxed retail games to be the same RRP price to keep the retailers relatively sweet. This does give the edge to retailers who can shave a few pounds off, if they chose to do so. Game own Gamestation now so also own a big slice of the trade-in/second hand market.
Comment by Dave — Mar 28, 2008 @ 8:44 pm
DELETED!
Comment by anon — Mar 28, 2008 @ 8:45 pm
Ton, I know we haven’t usually seen eye to eye, but for once I agree with you, on face value it does seem strange that a digital version costs more. But as usual there is a reasonable explanation as mentioned above. Retailers don’t have to stick to the retail price, but SCEE now do (unless they risk being boycotted). A Retailer will usually take about 30% of the sale price, so on that basis they can go down to about £17 before they make £0 on the game, and as they want to get their share they have to reduce the price, even if it is a loss-leader (selling something at a loss to get customers in the shop). There is nothing SCEE can do about this unless they want to bottom to fall out of the market.
Comment by John — Mar 28, 2008 @ 9:01 pm
34: Garbage. Ton isn’t ‘lucking’ that he has a PS3. I assume he got his the same way I got mine - by giving Sony a large quantity of money, based on the service and product they promised at the time. That’s what gives him the right to complain about it when that service doesn’t come up to scratch. Again, if you’re personally happy with the quality of the PSN updates and Sony’s communication with its most loyal - and most frequently abused - customer base, then that’s fine (if a little disturbing - you clearly have low standards). Those of us who think they deserve a bit more for their custom will continue to complain when it’s deserved.
36: Garbage. If Sony wanted you to download the games at all cost then they could do so far more effectively - releasing the game either exclusively on PSN or with a time-limited exclusive, or by cutting the PSN price. Your conspiracy theory is a terrible one, because the advertised conspiracy doesn’t have the desired effect.
52: Gar- wait, no. This guy knows what he’s talking about.
Comment by iapetus — Mar 28, 2008 @ 9:08 pm
@ Beezle Bob (32):
Did you consider that Ton Capone is complaining because it’s the unfairness in price, considering what you don’t get with digital downloads, that’s important to consider?
While I appreciate Sony need to make a profit, prices for digital downloads CANNOT be compared with physical packages purchased in stores.
The reason is that no matter how many people purchase something from PSN, it’s purely a transfer of bytes from one computer to another, while buying something physically means a box, manual and disc had to be made for EVERY SINGLE unit of stock for that product; digital downloads can NEVER claim that, because they’re not physical products.
With that in mind, how can you reconcile the fact that when you and someone else buy it digitally by downloading it, you’ve merely got ‘copies’ of the bytes that make up the ‘package’, whereas someone else who buys the physical package owns a physical item, and so does the next person who buys it from a shop and so on?
Get it? It’s not the same thing and can NEVER be…That’s why the download price is UNFAIR! At the very least the digital version should be much, much cheaper as Sony will still make a profit on it.
However, if you consider that Sony is being greedy with their profit margin, they don’t want to kill off/be seen to be favouring DLC over high-street shops and they don’t care where you put all these downloads on the puny HDD sizes they offer in their PS models, then, I’d say you’re right about your point.
Oh, and get his name right, will ya?!

If there’s gonna be a delay could you please let people know sooner rather than later.
You even have that message board thing on the ps3 that seems to be going to waste at the moment.
A little gesture can make a hell of a lot of difference.
As far as digital distribution im a steam user and am pretty used to being screwed on price. This is why i tend to go for retail unless i really do save something.
What has been said about retailrs is true they have a lot of power and will sell things at a loss to get you in store. ever notice how preorders tend to be pretty cheap? they want to garentee that they get your money.

What a shocking price for GT5P!!!!! Surely no one in their right mind will pay that? I’ll be surprised if anyone will pick that option over a physical disc with box and manual and a £7 saving!!!!
This is the exact reason why people who think digital downloads will overtake blu-ray soon are wrong! I cannot believe people are defending the price on the basis it is the same RRP as the disc version! The point is it shouldn’t be the same RRP, this game should have an download RRP of £19.99 tops, like Warhawk.
Why are people so willing to pay the same (or more) for a download then for a physical product? The bottom line is it’s far cheaper to sell direct to the customer virtually, by keeping the RRP unchanged all they are doing is ripping off the customer to line their own pockets!
I’ve never paid full RRP for any game, it is the retailers maximum price. If I buy GT5 I’d pay £17.99 for the disc version, like I would assume anyone in their right mind would.
I would urge other people to do the same, if this game flops as a download but succeeds as a disc based game it will send a message to Sony (and everyone else) that we are not willing to bend over and take being ripped off for their downloads. Otherwise it is a slippery slop.
Look at it this way, how often do you pay £50 for a full game? I myself pay no more than £40, and more often than not £30. So imagine the scenario where a full game download is £50 and online the disc/box/manual is £30. I’m sorry but the “the RRP is the same” arguement doesn’t wash. Now take it a step further, when their is no disc version, suddenly you have no choice - you pay an over the odds RRP to download it or you don’t get the game.
No wonder Microsoft is hoping so much that digital downloads become the norm. Less costs, more profit, and customers are left forced to pay

@79,
there is moderation here,
threespeech deletes mostly the messages which are true regarding “sony strategy”.
but again 55 is a bit harsh,but he/she also has a point…
Comment by terrortime — Mar 30, 2008 @ 8:25 am
Maybe the reason you could pick this up at GAME for £20 instead of PSN for £25 is not because Sony are overpricing, but because retail is trying to stave off the threat to their market that is posed by DLC.
If Sony can distribute a large chunk of their software without having to go through the middleman then they will.

yh but if you buy the disk version you can always still play the game if you hard drive kicks the bucket(my friend on 3rd pS3 from this) or you get bored and think may as well sell it.

I suspect that Beyond the Apex is for US customers only…

BD version - it takes 6GB of space on my PS3.
How much space does the download version take?
It seems the only advantage of the BD version is that I have a hard copy of it (and I get it a bit cheaper than the DL version).

@85
If your machine fails though, you can re-download. You are allowed to that up to 5 times on any purchased download.

When are we going to get some of the games that appear on other PSN stores around the wrorld, I want to download Castlevania Sword Of the Night (the highest rated PSN game yet), Europeans and in particular the UK is very loyal to Sony, but we always seem to get a bum deal from them
Come on Sony… look after us UK users better

FFS… DLC is not going to work if you charge 5-10 quid MORE than retail boxed versions.
the whole point of DLC is the fact it doesnt get passed through multiple systems that all take a share of the profit hyking the prices.

/agree with (78) in full.

TS should allow moderation from a few of the regular TS posters who know how to behave on here. Maybe have 5 so that they all have to confer and agree that a post is offensive before it gets deleted.
Comment by Savage — Mar 31, 2008 @ 12:12 am
I meant so that at least a majority agree, ie 3 out of 5, before a post is deleted. Therefore out of hours, posts like 55 would not be around for long.

Not what ThreeSpeech needs at all.

What the hell!
The game is only playable by the account that made the purchase from PSN Store! The license didn’t mention this at all! What’s going on here, SCEE? Did you screw up the description or did your QA screw up while testing?
SCEE: Are you fixing this or should I have my money back?
And don’t you dare excuse this by the “1 Player; 2-16 Network Players” in the description. We both know that this is not what a one player game means! So what’s it gonna be?

Sony had to enter into an agreement with the retailers that they wouldn’t under-price them, if they didn’t do this, they would have lost retailer support, and as much as they want DLC to suceed…Sony is still a boxed-sales company for now.
If the retailers then decide to undercut the RRP, it’s unfortunate for Sony, but more importantly for the PSN users who wanted to download it directly.
It’s not a case of Sony ‘crapping’ on the consumers, rather it’s trapped in a corner with no obvious route out perhaps?

No it isn’t. It is just too expensive on the store.
