Mr Mensa got in touch to ask whether we could find out if Go!Cam works with Skype on the PSP. We thought you all might like to know Sony’s reply…
So, Go!Cam is compatible with Skype, but you will still need headphones. Just to be clear, you can use either of the following set-ups for Skype:
OPTION ONE
- PSP Slim & Lite
- Headset & Remote Control
- Memory Stick
- Wi-Fi Connection
OPTION TWO
- PSP Slim & Lite
- Go!Cam & Headphones
- Memory Stick
- Wi-fi Connection
Go!Messenger is slightly different - you can use either the original PSP or PSP Slim & Lite:
OPTION ONE
- Original PSP or PSP Slim & Lite
- Headset & Remote Control
- Memory Stick
- Wi-Fi Connection
OPTION TWO
- Original PSP or PSP Slim & Lite
- Go!Cam & Headphones
- Memory Stick
- Wi-fi Connection
Hope that answers it!

Hooray! the PSP Phat has not been forgotten!
Still wouldn’t mind having skype though but ah well - can’t have everything!

Are there any decent cameras for the PSP, say a 6 or 8 mega Pixel one so that it sould be used as a digital camera?
Comment by Tony — Mar 5, 2008 @ 4:57 pm
Any idea where I can find a Go!Cam actually in stock? Tried amazon/play/game/hmv/woolies (online stores). The zavvi near work doesn’t stock anything PSP at all.

You can only use the gocam for skype audio. There doesn’t appear to be any skype video.
Comment by puzl — Mar 5, 2008 @ 5:29 pm
Well, I have the PSP Slim, the Go!Cam and Skype.
There is NO NEED for headphones AT ALL. The GO!Cam built-in microphone works perfectly with Skype. Incoming audio goes through the system speakers as well.
Comment by TTP — Mar 5, 2008 @ 5:39 pm
Forgot to add: same with Go!Messenger.
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO NEED FOR HEADPHONES IF YOU HAVE THE GO!CAM.
GO!CAM BUILT-IN MIC WORKS FINE!

Hey
Thanks for finding out the answer for me!
I know Skype works without headphones as I got a friend to ring me and it came out the PSP’s speakers.
Now its just the hard decision of getting the headset for £17.99 (Play.com) or the Go!Camera (off eBay probably for about £30).
Cheeeeerrs! I owe you a pint!

There are a fair few in an independant shop here in stafford if anyone is after one?
Comment by JohnSketch — Mar 6, 2008 @ 12:24 am
Why are the headphones necessary? The PSP has speakers.
Or do you mean headset as in headphones+microphone?
Doesn’t the camera have a microphone? Or am I getting confused by this?
http://blog.tmcnet.com/blog/tom-keating/skype/sony-psp-skype-headset.asp
I’m still in need of some details.
Also, what kind of headsets (with mic.) work with the PSP? I went to my local Sony Center the other day, and they hardly even knew anything about the PSP at all, and the sure didn’t have any PSP accessories.

Yeah, i’ve seen the psp cam in a few places in Plymouth, including HMV and the one that used to be Virgin

Do we know if Skype is coming to the PS3 for all us PS3 Eye owners to use (because sitting in your living room having a chat is way better than doing so on a computer in the study!).
Cheers guys.

thanks for letting me know the go!cams are out there. in the words of Mulder ‘i want to believe’ one day i will see one on a shelf
but living in the dark interior of Norfolk things tend to trickle through slowly. damn distortion in the space/time continuum.
at least we have a GameStation shop

Ok, I’ve found out the Go!Cam has a microphone.
I’d really like to know:
1) Why are headphones necessary when a Go!Cam is used? The PSP has speakers.
2) Can I connect a standard headset with ear phones and microphone to the PSP? Say one made by Sony Ericsson, Nokia, etc?
3) Is it really necessary to connect the headset though the PSP Remote? Can’t it just be connected directly in the PSP’s jack socket? I’m not interested in carrying those extra wires and the remote control.
According to this guy, I need both a Sony PSP remote control and Sony PSP Headset. But then again, he’s from Sony PSP Marketing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PglZOaLrLqk
Anyone?

I guess the headphones are for ‘private’ conversations in starbucks or the like, not everyone wants to hear everyone else’s conversation.
It kind of spoils the ‘Let’s make the other half of the conversation up’ game.
I’m guessing the reason for the remote usage is that the headphone socket on the PSP has only got the connectors for ‘Left, Right and Ground’ whereas the remote has the ‘extra’ connector ring for the microphone.
I’ve purchased the PSP-Slim remote and skype kit from play and the 3.5mm headphone jack has 4 contact points.
I’m also just guessing because I don’t have another headphone / microphone unit that any other brand should work too, the connections do seem standard (3.5mm jack etc)
I just wish Play would stock the PSP camera again, I’d love to be able to buy it on-line (I hate crowds).
Please Sony, sort out your accessories line and get some stock to the retailers!!
Oh and where the heck is the GPS unit?1?!

@18
Headphones are NOT nessasary…but if you dont want everyone to hear your convo then use them!
I presume you need a remote to connect a microphone due to the jack plug on the PSP being for audio out only, and the data plug (next to the jack - kinda like those seen on a Sony MD player) carries the voice data received by the microphone.
Now, the big question for me is: Do I purchase the headset for £17.99 (PLAY.COM) so I can have my psp in my pocket whilst I chat….
OR
Do I buy a Go!Cam (£30+ from heaven) and have video capabilities on Go!Messenger (and the ability to snap photos), but then have to have the PSP in range of my voice in order to chat?!
blummin’ ‘eck
Comment by elephant.stone — Mar 6, 2008 @ 1:16 pm
@20: My thoughts exactly, but I wasn’t sure it the jack had an audio-in connecter, like some mobile phone do. And I last I checked, the data plug didn’t have enough connectors for an audio, but I could be wrong, or the connectors could alter their behaviour when special apps/games are started.
Too bad the PSP doesn’t have bluetooth — that would solve this completely, and make it way more handy =)

To all those asking why Go!Cam users need headphones.
The simple answer is to avoid feedback i.e. the go!Cam Mic picking up the audio out from the PSP’s internal speakers causing a potentially damaging feedback loop.
Now, can anyone tell me when the GPS unit for PSP is being released. It’s been on sale in Japan for nearly 2 years. It can’t take that long to localise some maps? Especially since Sony sell Sat-Navs, so they have the map data and software developed.
I’m waiting for this rather than buying a stand-alone unit.
Comment by MOR — Mar 6, 2008 @ 3:29 pm
it is available at Play.com for £29.99, delivered.
Am going to give it a go.

i can get through on skype via the go cam but i cant see the person i am talking too or they cant see me can anyone help me
Comment by Eve — Dec 27, 2008 @ 5:25 pm
Hello to everyone,
I’m hearing both that headphones are required along with the go!cam’s mic in order to use skype AND that they are not.
For those of you who have successfully used skype with only the go!cam mic and the PSP’s built in speakers, did you have to change any settings in order to get it to work?
For my part, once I unplug headphones from my PSP, the Go!cam mic stops working…works fine with headphone’s (regular mic-less headphones) - won’t work at all when headphones are then unplugged!??
Would really like to use skype on the PSP without fumbling around to plug in headphones first.
Any help would be apprecieated.
