There was an apology at the original source:
“We’d like to apologise for the lack of a PS Store refresh yesterday. Unfortunately we experienced some last minute technical difficulties and were unable to publish the new content as planned. We are working hard to resolve these issues and content will be refreshed as soon as possible.”
Comment by Estel — Mar 28, 2008 @ 1:15 pm
This statement would have been useful last night. I’m not particularly interested in GT, but the frustration people experienced is very understandable. Waiting up on the *hope* of a release is, I’m sure, something we have all experienced, and it is very disrespectful to not inform people of an ETA.

I can understand if something odd happens so the release date is pushed back, but I really do think the users should be better informed.
I look at it like this, in the past consoles were stand alone, and users were people who used gaming software somewhere sometime. The relationship was that we bought what was available. Today however, the relationship is different. We’re using kit that is directly connected to the manufacturer, and as such, we’re expecting a level of support and service that we have become used to in other tech that is similarly connected. Sony should be well aware that like an ISP, mobile phone operator, electric company, water; you name it, we are immediatly aware of any issues, and expect an answer and fix pretty damn pronto.
As soon as my PSN plays up and I’m kicked from Warhawk, I want to know what has occurred and when I can get back on. A status screen would be useful here. That news ticker thing that seems to be utterly useless could be modded to report info about the PSN status could it not?

Good point people, not even a hint of an apology from these ignorant gits.
This sort of thing happens constantly.
IT’S TRUE, SCEE CANNOT GO 5 MINUTES WITHOUT HUMILIATING THEMSELVES.
Comment by Ton Capone — Mar 28, 2008 @ 2:01 pm
Sony, I know you’ve been busy recently, what with making all our credit card details available to hackers and trying to figure out what the hell a ‘Europe’ is but why couldn’t you have just taken a couple of minutes last night to inform us that you where having problems?
A lot of people have been looking forward to this game and this is supposed to be one of THE bits of software that’s going to make 2008 the year the PS3 strikes back at the 360 but you’ve just totally messed the release up with your pitiful communication.
Technical difficulties are fine, it’s a shame but I’m prepared to give you the benefit of the doubt, these things do happen. The problem, in my opinion, is that you make all these big promises but it seems like you always fail to deliver and then don’t even bother informing us about what’s going on.
If anyone important at Sony reads this, please, please, please have serious words with your PR department, they’re really bad at their jobs. Really, really bad.

Well this is a wonderful state of affairs! Sony’s PR team have to copy their ‘official statement’ from the Playstation forums.
The setup is not good guys, I’m starting to lose patience with Sony, it’s as if they want the Xbox to win the console war.
Comment by Nick Iribar — Mar 28, 2008 @ 2:15 pm
Yep, bought the disk at opening time this morning. Thing is, if this is a bit of a conspiracy to sell more disks why bother? If they just planned a release a week later on PSN most of us would buy the disk to get it sooner so I’m not sure that holds water as a theory.
By the way, it’s awesome! TIP for the update (someone posted this in the previous thread). When you are first told to update, say no then go to the news page in the game and it will ask you again. Do it there and is much more stable. Mine did it first time that way.
Be prepared for a long wait when first booting this game. The install takes about 15 minutes and the update on my 8meg connection (which is really about 6Meg) took 30 minutes!
Comment by TheShirts — Mar 28, 2008 @ 2:18 pm

SCEE PSN never ever fail to disappoint and leave custumers miserable with their inept and pathetic store updates. People are sick to the back teeth of missing and delayed content. They are incapable and prove this every week to the point where the people running SCEE PSN need to get their act together NOW or get the sack. The SCEE PSN is letting SONYs good name down very badly.
I believe that the issue with GT5p is deliberate to raise retail sales and appease mega monopolies such as GAME/GAMESTATION.
The missing content on Euro PSN is INEXCUSABLE and DISGUSTING. The lack of PSone titles compared to the 100+ available on the Japan store is a CRIME against European consumers. The Japan store got MGS1 as a downloadable game this week. WHAT IS SCEEs excuse for their utter FAILURE at securing the same content . I AM FURIOUS AND DISGUSTED AT the SCEE PSN STORE. They are GROSSLY INCOMPETENT. If anyone at SCEE actually gets any of this feedback YOU HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM your most lyal fanbase is consistently LET DOWN AND FAILED EVERY WEEK. 51: If the lies and delays and substandard content were one-off events then maybe you’d be right. But when it’s a constant pattern it’s only understandable that the level of complaint continues to rise. When was the last time the European store had an update on a par with the US one? I don’t remember it. When was the last time a promised release date was actually met for a PSN game? Blast Factor has been telling me for months that there’s an update available on the store, but now we’re being told that it won’t be out until next month. Even a big game like GT5:P is delayed, and nothing is said about it until a one-paragraph comment on the community forums the day after. This is not good customer service, and whether you personally like it or not, the only way to address it is through complaints and by punishing Sony by buying elsewhere.
And since Sony don’t provide particularly convenient lines of communication between themselves and their most loyal customer base - which is my biggest complaint about the whole fiasco - it’s places like this that people have to come to to complain in the vain hope that someone from Sony who gives a toss and has the ability to make changes might actually read it.

Comment by mikeck — Mar 28, 2008 @ 4:22 pm
I know it’s frustrating, but jeez - so many PS3 owners are whiney little girls! First it’s store updates, then it’s release dates, then it’s HDD installations, and now because there were difficulties with GT5P on PSN.
C’mon, people! Buy the BD version online - it’ll be cheaper. Or - heaven forbid - get off your arse and go buy it in a shop.
As for the issues downloading the update - what the hell did you expect? It sold over a million copies on pre-order, and the majority of those people are going to be trying to get the update at the same time. The update server is just a web address like any other, and is probably inundated with people trying to connect… so it’s having trouble… just like the GTA4 site did when they released the first trailer. Give it time and you’ll get your update.

Finally Sony have sorted out whatever technical issues were holding them up in releasing the PS3 store update this week and we can confirm that Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is now available to download for £24.99 (we had hoped for a lower price-point to that of the retail version, especially considering that there is no cost of producing Blu-Ray discs or manuals.)
We can confirm that the UEFA Euro 2008 demo is also up, as well as a few other goodies (and not so goodies).
GT5 Prologue (£24.99)
Euro 2008 demo (Free)

boo hoo you babies!
It’s up now and in time for the weekend!
To the cynics that thought that the delay was due to some sinister plan of Sony’s to keep the retailers happy. - You were wrong. Otherwise Sony would have allowed the retailers to have exclusivity on Saturday as well (that being the busiest shopping-day of the week).
Comment by reakt — Mar 29, 2008 @ 10:47 am
Just buy it in the shops or get it from an on-line store. Do not support extortionate on-line prices, when you get more for your money (and save precious HDD space) buying the physical product.
It’ll be cheaper as well (don’t pay £25 for it!) AND you get the packaging, guide and physical disc, rather than praying the PS3’s HHD never experiences CRC Errors when little Johnny accidentally hits it with his walker…etc.
Comment by Zed Zee — Mar 29, 2008 @ 1:32 pm
@Zed Zee - That’s what I thought - “why bother with the downloaded version when I can have a hard copy?” Then somebody pointed out to me that with the hard copy, you always need to have the disk in the drive in order to play it (of course). It would be convenient to have it just there on my HDD - like WarHawk is! I think WarHawk is the game I play the most - partly because I love it, but also because I don’t need to leave my comfy sofa in order to switch over to it after playing another game. Also, if the downloaded content on the HDD is damaged, or in fact the HDD itself is damaged, then the content can be downloaded again. It’s a pain in the ar*e to have to download all of your PSN store purchases again (as I’ve had to do this I know only too well) but it is do-able.
As for the price difference. Perhaps SCEE might have liked to offer GT for a lower price. But this would have made them undercut their retail outlets. At least that’s what I would guess. Who knows. So anyway, SCEE are offering the downloadable version for the same price. It costs them less to distribute it (plus there’s no manufacturing cost). It’s the same price as the retail version and the consumer get the added convenience of being able to play it without a Blu-ray disk in the drive. It might sound a con but it’s a bit like tomato ketchup! Millimetre for millimetre it’s far cheaper to buy a Heinz ketchup in a glass bottle as opposed to a squeezable plastic bottle. Of course glass costs more to manufacture and distribute (since it’s heavier). The plastic bottle version offers an advantage to the consumer in the way it dispenses the product. Anyway that’s enough nonsense for now. My GT5 break is over and it’s back to the action!
Comment by reakt — Mar 29, 2008 @ 10:17 pm
@ reakt (78):
If you’re happy to continue overpaying for a digital download, then be my guest. I suspect others, will not fall for that. Others will want a user manual for the game to immerse themselves even further and read up on driving tips etc. etc. etc.
I don’t think the comfy sofa excuse is good enough, in my opinion - it sounds lazy to me and I don’t agree with that. Since when has laziness kicked in, considering 99.95% of PS3 games is STILL on some form of physical disc or another?! Let alone the previous gens (PS2/PS1) being completely reliant on disc storage for their games.
All of a sudden, the prospect of not getting up from your sofa has become trendy/the norm? Poppycock!
So, no, I can’t subscribe to that as a valid point. Whereas the puny HDD space provided on Sony’s PS3 consoles is valid as an argument to say, before you know it, you’ll need to upgrade your HDD to cope with all the demos, on-line games and purchased digital games you’ve downloaded from PSN, let alone Home, game-saves, wallpapers etc.
I mean, the GT5P download is about 2GB, I’ve heard, that’s 5% already gone with just one game download!
Your analogy with Heinz ketchup merely demonstrates that Sony is providing their ‘tomato ketchup’ (GT5P download) directly into your cupped hands, as opposed to someone buying it in a glass or dispensing bottle.
That’s not right or fair.
