The release information and Euro (€) retail price of the Go! Explore GPS add-on for the PlayStation Portable was made public today. Ways in which the software will work were also explained to CVG.
“On foot, you’ll be able to plot your way through cities in 3D thanks to the fully modelled city maps contained on the UMD discs. Simply load the UMD disc, select your destination, and watch as the city’s landmarks and points of interest appear on-screen in 3D.”
“When you’re in the car, you’ll benefit from different display modes for day and night, meaning that you’ll always get the clearest view of where you’re going.”
You’ll be able to purchase Go! Explore in three ways, and it’s set for release this spring.
* GPS Receiver and Maps UMD – €119
* Same as the above with Car Mount / Adaptor - €149
* PSP System with GPS, Maps UMD and Car Accessories - €299

seems a fair price for the GPS reciever and umd maps!, it’ll be about the same size screen as normal gps screens if not bigger…….oh! it is bigger sweet!

how about a satellite broadband add on! ;D
Comment by mobiletone — Jan 9, 2008 @ 6:31 pm
@2
GPS doesnt carry any real meaningful data, unless your asking for Sony to implement something like 3G (or GPRS) but then that would need yet another hardware add on.
I think its a steep price really…when it came out in Japan it was well cheap and I was looking forward to it! Now im looking at £100+ for the GPS receiver, UMD, car mount and adaptor!! Bit steep if you ask me. Probably still get it though cause I’m a sucker.
Comment by elephant_stone — Jan 9, 2008 @ 6:39 pm
Man, this price is REALLY pushing it. I mean, a new PNA now is available at 100€ nowadays and they want 120€ for a GPS mouse (which can bet bought for less than 40€) and maps?
Comment by TheWretched — Jan 9, 2008 @ 6:42 pm
Be quite handy on the move!
Comment by JohnSketch — Jan 9, 2008 @ 6:46 pm
If you don’t already have a tomtom-type sat-nav unit in your car this is pretty good value, that’s without even considering all the other things it can do, being a PSP!
Comment by Timbo — Jan 9, 2008 @ 6:53 pm
Ok so converting it to British Poundsfrom Euro’s:
GPS Receiver and Maps UMD – £89.18
* Same as the above with Car Mount / Adaptor - €111.64
So under £100 for a GPS system. Thats pretty good. I’ll think I’ll grab the one with a car mount!
If Sony however release it in the UK more expensively I’ll import from Euroland
Comment by Eararaldor — Jan 9, 2008 @ 7:12 pm
Considering we have already paid for the CPU, GPU, LCD and what not, this is far from a good price. An antenna is not a complex piece of kit and maps although expensive I do not believe justify this cost.
Comment by nailerr — Jan 9, 2008 @ 7:13 pm
Incidentally yes I will be buying it immediately, I have been playing with a Jap import and I really have been salivating for this device. I just will not be happy with the price I pay is all.
Comment by nailerr — Jan 9, 2008 @ 7:15 pm
@3 - yeah, a 3G enabled psp would rock. no more hunting for wifi hotspots. that i WOULD use on a pay as you go deal. i’ve got an NEC e616v 3G fone, it’s handy.
Comment by mobiletone — Jan 9, 2008 @ 7:17 pm
Not a bad price, I’ve been holding off getting a PSP until this was released. £225 all in isn’t too bad, especially if the net discount it below £200.
Looks like the software is up-to-date too, 3D maps is a pretty new feature on SatNavs. My SatNav on my phone is getting quite out of date now so I’m looking to upgrade.
Anyone know if the maps will be upgradable? Like downloading updates to your Memory stick, or will you need to buy a new UMD?
Good that you can mount and charge it in your car though!
I wish they would be more specific about when in Spring this comes out…
Comment by Apnomis — Jan 9, 2008 @ 7:59 pm
Awesome! I may well have to get this.
Comment by reakt — Jan 9, 2008 @ 8:00 pm
Another thing, if this is the Europe version does that mean all the maps of Europe are on the same UMD? If so that’s even better value, as the likes of TomTom charge extra for maps outside the UK!
Comment by Apnomis — Jan 9, 2008 @ 8:01 pm
One last question, is the software based on Sony’s existing SatNav systems, which are quite good, or has this been developed from the ground up? At the end of the day if the software isn’t up to scratch it will completely ruin the system…
Comment by Apnomis — Jan 9, 2008 @ 8:06 pm
@ Apnomis - firstly, yes there are plans so you will be able to download updates via the PlayStation Store. I’m not sure if all maps will be on the UMD… but again, there will be upgrades on the PlayStation Store for download. Not sure about your last question, will have to wait till we get a hands on to answer that one.

any news on the keyboard for the psp that Sony announced at the CES?
Comment by mobiletone — Jan 9, 2008 @ 8:31 pm
@Apnomis: There will be several regions:
-UK/ Ireland
-France
-Germany/ Austria/ Switzerland
-Spain/ Portugal
-Italy
-Scandinavia
-Benelux
All UMD’s will contain the same languages.

They should just add a generic bluetooth usb dongle. Then one could connect to a standard GPS receiver. And one could use PSP Skype with a bluetooth headset. A standard Bluetooth adapter is way more versatile than all these specialized devices.
Comment by Zta — Jan 10, 2008 @ 9:14 am
I heard that this will only work on the new PSP Slim N Lite. TS can you confirm if this is true or not please?
I will be slightly disappointed if this doesn’t work on the older PSPs but I don’t really have a great need for a Sat Nav anyway so I don’t think I’d have bought it immediately anyway.
Comment by Dave Vincent — Jan 10, 2008 @ 10:01 am
@22: The recently announced skype application will only work on the Slim n Lite because of the memory limitations on the older model. Nothing has been stated regarding this though which I would take to mean it is probably compatible with the older models too
Comment by Timbo — Jan 10, 2008 @ 10:16 am
I hope it will work on all Models!!!
Comment by Danny McConnell — Jan 10, 2008 @ 6:19 pm
You can now pick up a sat nav for not much over £100 so why pay that much for just an add-on. Way too expensive…
Comment by Stephen Reeves — Jan 15, 2008 @ 4:59 pm
hey guys you can pick up the GPS add on at ebay from Hong Kong for around £30 delivered and then all you need to do is sort out the UMD which should be available on its own soon or you could google it and there is an alternative ran from a memory stick which i downloaded but cant remember the name off hand, it begins with “D” if that helps, peace out!
Comment by guru — Jan 25, 2008 @ 10:29 am

@ 28
Have you used googlemaps on a phone with a GPS reciever? Its shocking, and the data rates cost a bomb if you want to use it extensively!!!
Anyhow…..I found this:
http://www.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=280;-1;-1;-1&sku=781700
£29.99!!!!! I have preordered this as that price is not accurate for any of the packages, and HMV have to honour the advertised price! w00t

I’ve got a “thick and heavy PSP” and have used go!messenger as a video phone with camera attached, able to chat to my laptop with BT’s softphone2 installed. Works lovely! Just ordered a go! explore off HMV for £30, can’t wait to see what I get in the post!!

I think this is a cool addition for the PSP and practicle too.
i dont think the prices you have at the top are correct (Shown Below)
* GPS Receiver and Maps UMD – €119
* Same as the above with Car Mount / Adaptor - €149
* PSP System with GPS, Maps UMD and Car Accessories - €299
amazon.co.uk has the gps and umd (I imagine the UMD is included) for £25.99
(http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-Go-Explore-PSP/dp/B0015INJ7M/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1206710243&sr=8-1)
they also have a cool car mount for £14.95
(http://www.amazon.co.uk/PSP-Car-Mount-Holder-Cradle/dp/B000WDTTC0/ref=pd_sbs_vg_h_?ie=UTF8&qid=1206710243&sr=8-1)
I can’t see them charging large amonunts for the bundle when it is cheaper seperately.
either way Im sold.
Comment by Raj — Mar 28, 2008 @ 2:17 pm
Well i purchased a psp sat nav antenna just under a year ago for £23.00 off ebay brand new. whats the likely hood i can just buy the software for the maps and not a bundle with the gps included????? i actually think the price is way to high as you already have purchased the expensive parts, the antenna costing nearly £100.00 Notes is robbery. ok the software you do need, but still very expensive for todays market.
hope they will just release the software.
