Sony revealed an interesting feature of BD Live (part of Blu-ray Profile 2.0) today, which will be of particular interest to PSP owners. Studios will have the option of including a portable optimised version of films together with the Blu-ray disc. The demonstration showed that, using Portable Copy with the PS3, you can copy straight from the Blu-ray disc to your PSP’s memory stick. David Bishop, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment explained to PC World.
“This way, you can have a portable copy you can take with you. There was always the promise of greater interactivity. You’ll see that coming in the new year”.
Sounds good to us.
This is a great feature, but if I hear ONE marketing exec say “synergy” in relation to this…

This is how it should have always been. No-one wants to buy two copies of a film, one for home and one for mobile which is why UMD was such a disaster. Being able to buy one copy and take it with you is just what the doctor ordered.

woohoo, i guess we can look forward to downloading ‘portable’ versions of films from the internet soon too.
awesome.
i didn’t convert Ratatouille from dvd to mpeg4, honest…

Wow! That would be cool! I convert DVD’s to play on my PSP at the moment and was starting to wonder how i could do it with the blu-ray filums.

This is great news, and may even shift a few more PSP units on its own. UMD was awful, but the potential to watch Blu-ray movies on my PSP is a mouthwatering concept.

where did you get those figures?
Comment by mikex — Jan 8, 2008 @ 7:28 pm
Man this will be great! I’m guessing it will just take a firmware update for the PS3 to play Blu-Ray profile 2.0?
Comment by $uperTed — Jan 8, 2008 @ 7:49 pm
@7: I assume so since the recent 2.1 firmware update added support for profile 1.1
It’s all explained well here: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/the-state-of-blu_ray/the-state-of-blu+ray-320077.php

@mikex : Those look like VGChartz figures to me. If so they are not totally accurate, but they usually give a good indication of trends.

Looks like I’ll be needing one of those new 16gb memory sticks then.

neat.
neater if the “Portable Copy” thingie can also be used with regular dvds.

I’m glad this has happened as the one market for PS3 not doing so well is with the movie aspect of things. Like people have said its stupid how you cant buy the films you want without needing a dual player.
Basically this bickering was harming both sides not to mention annoying customers. BR is still too expensive though and with upscaling available they need to bring the price down if it is to compete with the industry standard… DVD, which is now stupidly cheap. That will be a lot harder to “defeat” so to speak.

[...] Play Blu-ray movies on your PSP Posted in PSP by Aert on January 10th, 2008 at 2:35 After the flop that is called UMD movies, movie studio bosses came up with another scheme to get people into buying expensive Blu-ray discs. In the hopefully-soon-to-be-released new Blu-ray Profile, it will be possible for movie studios to include a portable version of the movie on the disc which can be copied to a PSP memorystick. [...]
