According to VGChartz Call Of Duty 4 is the third PS3 title to sell over two million copies, which is pretty impressive considering it hasn’t been out that long. Call Of Duty 4 is one of our favourite PS3 titles and is the first title in the Call Of Duty series to move away from a World War 2 setting. With its frantic action packed gameplay and an awesome multiplayer mode, it’s an impressive game.
Launch titles Motorstorm and Resistance have also sold over 2 million copies with Assassins Creed just missing the mark with 1.99 million copies currently sold.

kudos to the devs and publishers for providing us with such a cool game, they deserve the support of the community!

Indeed, I was dubious about this one but once I got it, I was hooked. The online play is so faultless and varied that you never get bored and feel driven to try and rank up each time.
Great game that shows what can be done, even with multi-platform titles

Great single player game and potentially one of the best multiplayer shooters but… Maybe they could use some of the undoubtedly large profit they made to speed up the release of multiplayer fixes? Like a party system that actually works and stopping the “host ended the game” message every other match. Speed up match finding, fix the mic dropping issue to name but a few.
I feel like the PS3 community have been left behind when it comes to Infinity Wards’ commitment to patching.
Comment by Slate8 — Jan 25, 2008 @ 12:53 pm
Resistance and Motorstorm were bundled launch titles so in all fairness COD4 has done a lot better. It its pretty much without fault, if they make the sequel have a longer single player it’ll be awesome. Saying that the whole “Middle East”, although very relevant in the current climate is getting overkilled now too. Please, noooooo more sand.

Slightly bigger multi-player maps and a longer single play - but otherwise superb… it’s always in my PS3 and play almost every night - now I need it to support my imported Dual Shock…..
pls

2 million and one - I’m gonna believe the hype and pick this one up on the way home from work!

What surprises/saddens me is that a fantastic game like Warhawk has only sold 300k, but I suppose that’s the risk you take in making an online only game.
I suppose the silver lining in that cloud, is that you can actually get online in Warhawk, whereas CoD4 is still an online disaster and with such a huge amount of players, it seems that Demonware don’t have the infrastructure to cope. Incognito seem to be managing server load nicely.

Here’s an idea… When an album sells X million in a country the music industry awards that artist gold and platinum albums in commemoration of the sales. Why isn’t there a similar award/recognition system for game units sold.
Get to it games industry. Now is the time!
Carpe Diem!
@Kinan : VgChartz may not be 100% accurate, but it does give you a very good idea of trends and how consoles and are generally performing. Get off their back or put together your own snazzy web site that accurately monitors games and consoles sales.

2Savage - trends are one thing but pulling actual numbers out of a hat is another. There are agencies like NPD or GfK that track numbers sold more or less accurately and there are fanboy powered websites that track only their perception of how something is performing. Posting those on semi-official blog is not really serious, dont you think?
Comment by Kinan — Jan 25, 2008 @ 2:34 pm
Although the game is brillant, i am not happy by the fact that there’s no support by the developers. The multiplayer needs the new patch, there are so many problems on the server and for selling so many copies, there should be new add ons. Look at motostorm, how many additional content that comes out on the PSN every week.
Comment by WildTuRkey — Jan 25, 2008 @ 3:01 pm
WIldTuRkey, a PATCH has JUST go into testing at SCEE it should be out VERY soon at the last time it was submitted SCEE found some bugs that need to be fixed. It has alread undergone extensive testing so this submision should not take long.

@Kinan: While vgchartz is making estimates based on a sampling of a small part of the market I think its unfair to classify their numbers as ‘fanboy powered websites that track their perception of how something is performing’. So far whenever there has been official numbers released or NPD numbers in the US they have seemed to confirm the vgchartz numbers pretty well.
vgchartz also make no secret of their methods for putting these numbers together. vgchartz can be considered similar to a political poll, they sample a number of retailers and make estimates on the total market based on that. And while polls are not as accurate as the actual election they do tend to give a quite accurate picture of trends among voters and relative strength between candidates.
Comment by Christian — Jan 25, 2008 @ 3:21 pm
@Kinan :
Last time I checked VGChartz were neither fanboys nor were they slanting/skewing their figures to make one particualr console or game look better than others. If they are inaccurate then they are inaccurate across the board, as I would think that they use the same methods of calculations in all regions. If you have information that they are fanboys and skew their numbers in favour of one company or game, let me know, because I’m not aware of this going on.
VGChartz explain exactly how they work out their figures…
“How VG Chartz comes up with its figures
1. Sales figures are determined through two important methods
1. Data Sampling – VG Chartz gathers random data from a sample of the total number of retailers.
2. Shipment information – VG Chartz has contacts with publishers who give their best estimates on number of products shipped.
2. Because the number of retailers selling videogames is quite large, it is possible to attain statistically valid results from a small sample.
3. It then becomes a matter of working backwards by having:
1. The approximate number of retailers.
2. Historical sales figures.
3. Data from sales tracking agencies as reference points in accuracy.
4. There are obvious limiting factors as well – few games have above a 40% attach rate, a game will never sell more than the console user base, publishers do not ship significantly more or less than they expect to be sold.”
From my experience of visiting VgChartz, when official sales numbers are released by NPD and the like, they adjust their data to reflect these new numbers.
As I said previously, if you can come up with a website that accurately displays games and consoles sales figures that are 100% accurate from around the world, on a week by week basis, I’ll be one of the first to sign up.
Until then, VGChartz it is.

Um…no. VGChartz isn’t a reputable site for data. Nice try Sony, but try sticking with NPD data.
Speaking of which, why haven’t we heard anything from Sony about the December NPD data?…hmmm…
Comment by Matt — Jan 25, 2008 @ 5:04 pm
NPD collect worldwide sales?
Nope.
According to VGChartz Uncharted has sold ~1million which is pretty good after the slow start it had in the states.
Comment by Shin-Ra — Jan 25, 2008 @ 5:21 pm
Assassins Creed, the way UbiSoft is NOT adressing the Screen Tearing problems on both PS3 and XBOX360 is not cool. And they sold almost 2 mil. of them, they should fix 60 euro games if it is their problem..
Comment by Pax_Pacis — Jan 25, 2008 @ 5:23 pm
@Matt: Err, have you been hiding under a rock? Sony commented on the NPD data right after the came out. Look at articles like this one from Kotaku:
http://kotaku.com/346309/sony-responds-to-december-npd-sales-seems-pleased
Also NPD is only useful for tracking US sales.
Comment by Christian — Jan 25, 2008 @ 7:32 pm
COD4 is simply the best PS3 game currently available, It’s no suprise it’s sold so well.
LEts hope theres plenty more 2mil+ sellers in 2008
Comment by Godfather Obie — Jan 25, 2008 @ 8:21 pm
According to NPD, Call of Duty on the PS3 sold 444,000 units in November alone. So that is 444,000 in the US alone!! If you take into consideration that it should have sold equally well, in most other regions, you should see a pattern forming. So I would say that VGChartz’s figures of 2 million world wide is highly likely. Just do the maths neigh sayers :).
Comment by Savage — Jan 25, 2008 @ 10:24 pm
Yes, this is a good game but I must say that if it weren’t for the online play then £49.99 for the single player offline would be criminal.
The online is good but for the amount of people on it I think the maps are too small.
Comment by Ton Capone — Jan 28, 2008 @ 4:45 pm
vgchartz? don’t you mean to say, “according to data stolen by vgchartz, Call of Duty sells ……..”
what a joke.
