Over at A&E Interactive they are running an interview with Sony US games chief Jack Tretton.
Mr Tretton, when quizzed about retaining developers for the PS3, answered as follows:
‘Well, I think the key is to demonstrate success, demonstrate a willingness to work with a publisher to do everything you can to give them development tools and resources to make them successful. I think the fruits of that labor is 160-plus games this year for PlayStation 3, 23 developers making games for PlayStation 3. And I don’t see any signs of that changing going forward. If anything, given the recent success that we’ve enjoyed, and given the success we’re enjoying on a worldwide basis, we’re getting a lot of very positive feedback about the prognosis for PlayStation 3, and really a renewed enthusiasm for it, as opposed to a declining attitude towards it.’

Anyone who has a PS3 knows who the winner is and fully support you Jack.

I only skimmed through the interview earlier, but after reading the following comment, it’s clear that the interviewer is an idiot.
“..there are also people out there now that are getting ready to call this battle between the HD-DVD and Blu-ray for HD-DVD. Is that beginning to look to you guys like a mistake that you went with Blu-ray instead of HD-DVD..”

I’m always a bit sceptical when Company heads proclaim dominance and superiority against competitors regardless of in which field, suppose it wouldn’t be good marketing though if Jack were to say “yeah it was a bit shitty when Devil May Cry jumped platforms”….e.t.c e.t.c.
Call me an optimist if in future we finally see CEOs of companies actually speaking to the public without the marketing/publicity babel!
Comment by JohnSketch — Dec 18, 2007 @ 11:10 am
@ JohnSketch: You can add Ace Combat 6 and Monster Hunter 3 to that list also. Not to mention games that won’t even see the light of day on PS3, like Crysis and Mass Effect. It’s as if the PS3 has some kind of ‘illness of failure’, making developers avoid it like the plague.
For a more sober rebuttal from gamers about an equally pretentious and unsubstantiated claim from Jack, have a read of this post:

This is a far more controversial comment and I think ThreeSpeech should be covering this instead.

I agree with you, but then it can also be seen from the viewpoint that whilst franchises which began years gone by on playstation/playstation2 are now no longer exclusive to the sony brand - we have seen a branch of newly created IP’s which do a fair share to fill the void.
Sharing my opinion - for every Devil May Cry we have Heavenly Sword, Ace Combat you have an Uncharted and not to say that the loss of exclusivity on those major franchises is good, but looking at it from afar - we are still going to get our fix of our last gen IP franchises regardless if they appear on another console, but alongside those we get our equal fair share of true gems that have been created newly and exclusively for the PS3.
Now you can easily say that there are amazing exclusives for other platforms and that’s a fair point - only so many “exclusives” to go around and having a loss of some of the medium to high profile franchises is a shitty deal it can be said.
However - having a well known and loved franchise go multiplatform can be a blessing in disguise, so long as the developer cares for the work they do and takes the time to make it the best it can be (within reason of course and looking at you EA!) - they can conceivably turn a larger profit off a franchise and in turn ensure the long term survival of a cherished franchise for greater quality in future.
I generally don’t bother looking at who has what for which system, instead I try to look at “what’s fun?” “what would I get a greater experience out of playing?”, although I could say I’m spoilt for having all 3 current generation consoles and none of this applying to anyone who owns just 1,
Just a thought anyway.

@ JohnSketch (6):
I appreciate your points but if I love Ace Combat on PS2 (which I do) and if I want to play the next instalment, I have to buy a X360 now and not a PS3…Oh well, Sony lose.
I don’t believe in multi-platform ownership. I’ve been a loyal PlayStation fan since the first generation - in fact, it was really Sony who got me back into console playing again. Before that, I’d ignored the SNESes and MegaDrives of the world. I’m just bitterly disappointed with Sony’s strategy for this third generation console.
For me, the fun is in your CHOICE of a console, sticking with it and seeing whether it ‘wins’ or not and engaging in all these hotly debated Web site articles and blogs. I think you don’t focus enough if you’ve got two or more consoles - it’s almost too easy then to play a game and waters down the experience, as far as I’m concerned.
I think the passion is lost if you solve it by owning all three and then just buying whichever game for whichever platform you fancy.
I think you lose out on the pain, the anguish, the frustration, sometimes the joy and the very fire that keeps hardcore gamers loyal to one platform or another and defend it vigorously anywhere from the playground, to business offices and right up to The Houses of Parliament. Oh yes, even there!
“Just a thought anyway.”

@ zed zee
you ignored the megadrive and snes???
no offence mate, but how old are you???
(p.s ace combat6 WILL come to PS3,just timed ‘exclusive’ with capcom ‘again’)

@ zed zee. You make it sound like it’s some sort of war. I buy a console like any other piece of hardware. I stick to Sony for consoles because I have always had good experiences with them, and feel used to them, not out of some emotional attachment.
Comment by John — Dec 18, 2007 @ 11:52 pm
@ seedaripper1973:
Those of us who ventured beyond the vile clutches of Nintendo and Sega in those ‘consoles-for-kiddies’ days, found maturity and joy with the Acorn Archimedes, Atari ST and Amiga systems.
While the former were still stuck in the 2D past, the latter were well under way to paving the route for filled polygons and 3D.
@ John:
I think the operative words in your post are “stick to”, “good experiences” and “feel used to them”. If those don’t translate as “emotional attachment”, then I don’t know what does.
Over & Out.

Is the interviewer serious? Who the heck is calling HD-DVD the winner? Here in Aus movie sales are around 85-95% in Blu-Rays favour, you’d be hard pressed to even find a retailer that sells a HD-DVD player. I know HD-DVD does less poorly in the states, but it’s still far behind …
Comment by Kii — Dec 19, 2007 @ 10:30 am
Thought it was a 2.5/3:1 ratio in favour of Blu-ray to HD-DVD ?
only “real” reason HD-DVD is hanging in there is that Microsoft have deep pockets willed with sweets and they give these “sweets” to companies like Paramount…and Paramount loves sweets so Microsoft being really nice gives them about 150 million of them.
And i’m done!

Threespeech pack it in. Worldwide the ps3 is now outselling the xbox. Nothings gonna change 3rd party support. It’s whether Sony wanna pony up the cash for more exclusives. If Hirais nice Stringer might give him some extra cash.

Ace combat will arrive on ps3 next year.

If Jack Tretton thinks his problems are solved by 1 months figures he is even more of a cretin than I took him for.
The PS3 is languishing behind the other formats in sales that is a fact.
Developers develop games for consoles that have a customer base they can sell those games to, that is a fact.
Tretton et al cocked up the launch and subsequent marketing strategy leaving the 360 as the developers lead format hence the poor ports we get, that is a fact.
The PS3 IS difficult to develop for, that is why we are seeing constant delays and exlusives which are too short, that is a fact.
Such is the lack of quality exclusives that PS3 is often advertised using multi-format titles, COD4, Assassins creed etc.
If God forid he continues in his arrogant, yes arrogant stances, and buries his head in the sand he and his underlings will knacker the PS3 for us all.
Sony need to keep a close eye on developers and not allow feeble code to be released, it is harming us all.
If he mentions 10 year plan one more time I will lose the plot, that is a fact.

Hey there everyone I know this is slightly off the subject in question but if you have a ps3 then you must try this it’s a small glitch within the playstation network which allows you to hack into any playstation account my friend shown me last week and now I want to show the world just follow the simple instructions below it only takes a minuite
Firstly open a new message from your playstation 3
In the To box type in the user ID PS_BOT00863
In the subject box type CHK PSSWD
Now in the message box type your victims user ID
Line break and type in your login email
Line break again and type in your login password
Now just send
This tricks the system into thinking it is recovering your details when in fact you will be sent back your victims login email and password usually within 24 hours

Alright then Dave, we’ll all just be doing that and sending YOU our network details.
You are a halfwit and your post should be deleted.
