Firmware Version 2.10 was announced today, with new functionality including the introduction of Blu-ray Profile 1.1, the provision of support for DivX and VC-1 video playback codecs, and also a voice changing feature to enhance Voice Chat on PS3, enabling users to alter the tone and pitch of their voice from the Control panel during AV Chat.

PLAYSTATION®3 System Software Update Version 2.10 Announced
Blu-ray Disc™ Standard Profile 1.1 (Bonus View) Enabled
DivX and VC-1 Video Playback Codecs Supported
Voice Changer for Audio Chat Introduced
London, 18th December 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced the immediate availability of the latest system software update for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™). Version 2.10 will enable the world’s most popular gaming system to expand its value as a home entertainment hub by allowing it to play the very latest interactive Blu-ray Disc™ movies, as well as broadening the number of video formats supported to make PS3 even more verstaile than before.
With the introduction of Blu-ray Profile 1.1 (known as Bonus View) PS3 will be able to fully exploit the potential of the new Blu-ray movies coming to market in 2008. With features such as Picture in Picture (PiP), the exceptional visual clarity offered by Blu-ray is further enhanced with richer features and interactive content, limited only by the imagination of the studio.
With sales of PS3 on track to have reached a cumulative global total of over 16 million by the end of March 2008, and the system software update making them all compatible with Bonus View, the market for Blu-ray discs showcasing these new interactive features is enormous. The first Blu-ray movies to take advantage of Bonus View are scheduled for release in January 2008, making PS3 owners amongst the first consumers able to enjoy the enhanced movie-watching experience that Blu-ray technology makes possible.
Many Hollywood and independent studios supporting Blu-ray will be bringing out an ever increasing range of movie titles in all genres featuring Bonus View interactivity to add to the pleasure of watching movies on Blu-ray disc. With superb image clarity up to five times that of normal DVD video, and crystal clear Dolby 5.1 Channel audio, Blu-ray movie playback on PS3 really broadens the entertainment possibilities of PS3.
The provision of support for DivX and VC-1 video playback codecs in system software Version 2.10 will also significantly expand the multimedia capabilities of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of video content available in both the the DivX and VC-1 digital media formats.
Version 2.10 also introduces an engaging voice changer feature to enhance Voice Chat on PS3, enabling users to alter the tone and pitch of their voice from the Control panel during AV Chat.

This is good news indeed, but does it mean we can stream those new formats via the media server without having to convert first, or on the fly via TVersity?
Happy days if we can!
Comment by Cantona53 — Dec 18, 2007 @ 10:57 am
yes this is always good news but does this mean with your previous announcements about reducing amount of firmware updates will now come into effect ?
Like I have said before not everyone will be satisfied with whatever you do…
and whatever you do is always compared to what the xbox 3fixme can do… but who cares about of the shelf bunged together consoles… we have a beast in our living rooms.
Cant wait to get home and get this one installed.

great news!
unfortunately, a lot of my divx/xvid films won’t work.
some do, some don’t.
yes, I know there a lot of different ‘wrappers’ and codecs involved, but they all work on my 360 after its divx update.
annoying, but a good start.
Comment by garengarch — Dec 18, 2007 @ 11:21 am
I can’t believe ps3 doesn’t support subtitles in divx, and also we don’t have something so simple as a playlist in videos, at least it should play videos in sequence like we do on the music menu.
Very nice to support divx but not supporting subtitles is terrible, and we have divx certification.. the 360 has subtitle support and it isn’t, what is the advantage of being certified you tell me.
Comment by Mauro — Dec 18, 2007 @ 11:24 am
the 360 divx update wasn’t actually for Divx support - more for a variety of MP4 codecs.. I’m asumming the Sony update uses the licenced DivX codec, and as such only a few will work..
Tried it out this morning and mine worked fine!

Comment by Bradley Manning — Dec 18, 2007 @ 12:06 pm
Well, the firmware notes have this to say about the support for Divx and VC-1:
“- Files that are 2GB or more cannot be played.”
Then what’s the point? Most HD content are several gigabytes in size. Most movies are a least 4 gb if they are in good quality and some are even larger, up to 8 gb.
It’s good that Sony brings us support for these codecs, but I don’t think I’ll be able to use it. I’ll have to use my 360 instead. I’m really confounded by this…
Comment by InsaneBastard — Dec 18, 2007 @ 12:22 pm
I’ve tried a selection of Divx and Xvid files, all have worked so far.
Great stuff Sony.
Comment by Silent_Shark — Dec 18, 2007 @ 12:27 pm
@ Mauro
Why don’t you try pressing SQUARE on the video icons!? This orders the videos into albums which are like playlists. You can then go into the information section of the videos and put the videos into a specific album. I’ve got all of series 6 of 24 in one folder and the same goes for Heroes S1 and S2.
Simple as that.

Great update but where’s the DIVX web support for the PS3 browser?!
Comment by quaium — Dec 18, 2007 @ 1:24 pm
@14: AVI is a bit painful as a container format for memory restrained devices as its has an index which you need to load into memory. The size of this index tend to be related to the size of the file. This index is used for searching for instance.
While you can work around the problem it takes a lot of work on the AVI demuxer and thus this being Sony’s first AVI support on the PS3 my guess they haven’t had the development time to make their AVI demuxer be able to work in the cases where the index is to large to get stored the limited memory of the PS3. If they consider it a priority they will probably be improving on this going forward.
That said my impression is that most DivX content is shorter/lower quality stuff and that when people package up HD content they prefer other codecs and container formats.

Hello,
I would like to say thanks to you guys for updating the PS2 BC in the latest firmware update. Now all my 100 PS2 games work.
I would like to ask you if you would be able to get Final Fantasy 8 SLES-02080 to work. The problem is that it loads the Playstation 1 logo and the Playstaton music but after that it goes to a blank screen. I can hear the drive working for about 30 seconds after the blank screen appears but after that it stops.
I have a PAL 60 Gb unit that uses PAL software emulation for PS1 and PS2 games.
If this is not the right place to ask them please tell me the right place to ask. SCEE doesn’t not have any way to contact them.
Even if cant help please respond so I know that at least someone is listening!

Comment by ddave — Dec 18, 2007 @ 2:30 pm
Avi has a traditional limit of 2Gb. It’s not some conspiracy of Sony’s making. Now there are workarounds, but I expect that in the 1st release they were concentrating on the core functionality.
Comment by DrXym — Dec 18, 2007 @ 3:10 pm
It would be nice if Sony allowed a codec folder to be created, for future codec support files to be dropped into. I like many would like the ease that the PC enjoys for upgrading codecs. I am not such a dullard to imagine that the PS3 will ever be the single stop media engine that we’re all wishing it were, but as I see each firmware upgrade, I see us slowly creeping towards our goal. Nice.
I wonder why the internet browser doesn’t use the same codecs? Mmm!
As to the voice changer, who on earth even imagined that this was required? And why? Is it for those little oinks that like to abuse us over the mic, to disguise the fact that they’re twelve year little snots? I can see me turning off all comms chat to avoid the barry whites and chipmunks. What an own goal that would be. Introduce a feature that turns users off.

i mean divx, yeah good idea on sony’s part. but to have a system with the capability of the ps3 i don’t think that these little add ons here and there are going to keep our attention. instead of something lame like a “voice changer” and PIP on bluerays why don’t they focus on our attention on getting the in game xmb up and running. i mean i want my voice to sound like barry whites as much as the next guy but still they need to stop dancing around the xmb issue and get it out to the public ASAP.

love the new earth screensaver music vis thing, very nice at 1080p on my 46″ tv mmmm
Comment by Orbilator — Dec 18, 2007 @ 5:02 pm
@Chase: What are you talking about? There was an interview with Eric Lempel posted just a few days ago where Sony confirmed that the request for in-game XMB had been heard loud and clear and that it was something they where working on. So Sony is not dancing around the issue at all.
And I also wonder why people seem to hold different features up against each other. If you have a technical problem to solve like how to design in-game XMB for the PS3, the only thing that is 100% certain is that putting 100 engineers on it is not the solution. If you do that you end up with the famous more chefs more mess situation. So they people working on DivX support or improved theming or any other feature are not ‘detracting’ from getting in-game XMB.
Comment by Christian — Dec 18, 2007 @ 5:11 pm
So, I’ve just got home, and while waiting for the download, I obviously was just staring at the backdrop of the PS3’s swoosh thing, and I had a thought about what would make a really decent (as in rather cool, if not useful) firm ware ingredient. I was thinking that I’d like to have the option to change the water swooshy thingy XMB background, for the latest Sony adverts. The user could nominate how much space it should occupy on the HDD, then, this would be filled with the media. It would delete the old ones (unless highlighted for keeps) as it needed to make space within the allocated space. It could use a BitTorrent style download operation that would squeeze between anything whenever it’s allowed.
Anyway, I’d like that. Of course, I realise that I could YouTube them, but I’m lazy and would like it this way.
Hee hee. I’ve just written this, and realised that it’s probably coming anyway, but in the form of buying a movie over the PSN, or Home or whatever. In that scenario, I guess the user would end up buying a cheap subscription to that sort of content. Mmm, bugger.
Right, enough waffle. Download and update are now complete. Back to Warhawk.

@E-ROLE: Start by grabbing a Pure Pwnage eposide in DivX and see if that works for you. Those work for me:
http://www.purepwnage.com/downloadepisodes.html
If that works then it is probably something with your DivX files which are a little iffy. Some people at PS3Fanboy have been using this tool to clean up their files:
http://www.moitah.net/
If you are trying to stream using a DLNA server make sure it can transcode. AVI is not really a streaming format.

Hi,
I am really disappointed with this update.
Here are some suggestions on what I would like/hope to see in furture releases:
A stable connection to a Media Server would be very nice to have. ( And in my eyes more valuable than just decent native support for *some* codecs. ) The system disconnects from MediaServer all the time. Does not matter if I use TVersity, MediaPlayer 11 or others. ( Used to work in FW 1.9x )
My PS3 network/internet connection is super stable so it is not a local problem.
Supporting the newest version of Flash would be great.
Make it possible to use Internet Radio. ( In some cases this would be sorted by supporting Flash 8++ )
Make a pdf reader. Fluent support from within the browser.
Make a better music browser, the xbar really does not do it… Eg. when you are having a party and have more than 1 album on the HD or Shared.
Make a jukebox with a decent playlist function, and a search option. That would be ace.
Make it possible to add time / date on top of background. ( like PSP )
Make it possible to adjust the mastervolume from the SIXAXIS controller. Maybe in the PSButton menu?
Why does the browser run out of memory all the time? Should be more than enough for simple surfing. Memory Leaks?
Make it possible to have a hierarchy in the favorite-list.
Make it possible to partition your harddrive the way you like…
Expose RSX to the linux guys or make closed source openGL driver. At a bare minimum, a 2D driver.
Make Super Rub’n'Dub work. The screen just goes black when you try to start it. Have not seen any other games not working. ( so far… )
Unleash the beast!!!
Best Regards,
René H
PS. I know some the issues can be sorted by running linux. But as it is, Linux feels slow as an old dog. eg. Takes 2-3 seconds just to fire up the console. Even longer to start Firefox.
Comment by René H — Dec 18, 2007 @ 8:49 pm
Also, the web brower now lets you save content when normally it requires a mouse right-click and save-as. If you press X on the link is saves to disk. Great! I’ve got games trailers from gametrailers.com doing this now, even though the flash plug-in still doesn’t work. But once downloaded they play as normal.
The web browser has been given more memory too, sites which previously wouldn’t load due to insufficent memory now work. The down side is that the web browser can take several seconds to shutdown now (Can’t have everything I suppose).
Greate update, can watch more “interesting articles” off the tinternet now ;o)

I read this blog every couple of weeks to get more details about firmware updates. What i dont understand and think is very childish is people saying some features are cr@p and useless jus coz they dont like it e.g earth visualier and some make imbecile generalisations e.g. voice changer has completely ruined online play. oh and not to mention ‘this plays on my 360 and not on my ps3, well if u can afford both a 360 and a ps3 then surely u shud go buy urself a pc and get the PC features that you been begging for on a console mate.
Seriously, get a grip, whining isnt gonna make the developers go any quicker. You do not have a clue how much work could go into even getting the divx codec to work, coz if u did then u’d be building one urself now wudnt ya?
On a more positive note, im glad that this blog also has some very reasonable readers, dont get me wrong, i would love in game xmb etc although i dont see how it wud be useful to me right now but im sure u guys will find some use for it. i wud love to have in browser support for most videos and other plugins u find on the net but hey until they do implement that, i just use my frickin PC!
I think voice changer is cool, if i was playing in a closed map online with people i know, it’d be funny.
Visualiser is cool as well, i hope we will get more choices in the future.
PS3 rules all! Thx for this update.

This is an excellent update and I cannot believe some people still choose to moan about the lack of in game XMB. But then most of us are used to that on hear as some people are never happy!
Personally I have no use for in game XMB, but I do have use for playing DivX files - quite a bit. Sony can’t please everyone at every time, but as been pointed out above (and on numerous other sites) they know you want it so please stop going on about it.
However, one thing I would like to see is some improvements to the web browser (and the PSP browser too). For example, I’m not sure if it occurs on every site but iframes don’t appear to work, it can be very slow to load pages sometimes and sites often appear slightly broken - but that could possibly be down to web designers not using valid code.
Also another point, TS have you actually viewed this site using the PS3 browser? It appears to have problems - the right hand column is displayed under the main body of text rather than alongside.
Comment by Dave Vincent — Dec 19, 2007 @ 10:31 am
Zaz: ( reply 50 )
I am a developer myself and know very well how much it takes to get divX to work. That is why I think it is a waste of time. People will probably use a transcoding mediaserver anyway.
The time used to get divX working ( almost 100% ) could be spend on something more important. There will be a new better codec tomorrow… It’s the never ending hunt. Either open up the platform, so developers can make codec plug-ins… Or make UPnP work 100% wireless and wired. Getting UPnP to work again will probably take less than a day… as it worked in FW 1.9x.
e.g. If you ( Sony ) choose to embed a web browser and make it possible for people to install other os ( like Linux ). People would expect things to work just as good as on their PC. If it ain’t that good, people will be disappointed.
Often PS3 is mentioned as a mediamachine. Sure it plays music, films and shows pictures. But the interface is not very good. IMHO. Especially when you want to handle multiple files.
It is not an easy task. But if anybody can pull it off… It is Sony.
Unleash the beast!!!

to download stage6 stuff straight into your ps3 use this url format in the browser address entry
http://video.stage6.com/XXXXXXX/.divx
where XXXXXXX is the videos id number in the embed form on the videos play page. you’ll see what i mean, then save to your HD and play back.

hi i am the proud new owner of a ps3. installed linux on it with RSX suport(basic support…) updated to 2.01 and i am using a proxy server to avoid updating to 2.10… i find i cant sign up for the PSN. which is sad because that means i cant BUY tekken 5 (somthing i was planing to throw money at…) i can by use of proxy dl stuff though folding@home but i cant use the offical folding at home.
basicly i have money to spend and i want to enjoy the playstation network. but i will not let go of my RSX usage. see my media i watch is mainly MKV containers that have subtitles in english and 2 audio tacks japanese and english… its my format of choice for hd video…
with linux and rsx i can do movie play back that the ps3 xmb dosnt support.
so here is my comment on 2.10
its nice to see divx suport on the ps3
it would have been nicer to see somthing like the support that the Combined comunity Codec Pack has to offer. (ie playback of evorything)
it was not nice to see more restrictions to the RSX.
to be honest i wanted my ps3 to be able to run some older pc games in the linux enviorment. and to be useable as a pc at lan partys.
the ps3 version of unreal tournament 3 will not play on a network with pc users…
yet in linux with the proper setup and rsx suport i belive the pc version of ut2k3 might have run in the linux enviorment allowing me to play that at lans(except my local lan party is boycotting ut3 because its not as fun as ut2k4)
overall i wish sony would unblock the RSX in linux.
now this would not harm sales of ps3 games. it would do the exact opisite. in fact it probly would keep people like me…
and there are alot of people like me.
in the PSN, buying games, and suporting the ps3…
as is i intend to buy the big titles…mgs4 dmc4 final fantasy XIII and final fantasy Vrs XIII
but… if rsx’s small restrictions are reversed… and linux suport goes back to how it was in 2.01 ill update to the next incantation of the ps3 firmware.
and aditionaly buy tekken dark resurection. online version
and in addition i will also purchase war hawk and might even consider doing the home beta.
piracy isnt something i desire.
i own a psp with custom firmware on it.
but i also keep dumping money on umd’s or my recent Crisis Core Bundle purchase.
i am glad ps3 games are region free. but if you as a company want sales increased. please pass on my little comment. (also sorry about the spelling errors i was pulled out of school for 2 years and thrown into a foster home… and because of that my academic preformence suffered)

I just wish that they bring back the Upscaling and smoothing of FW 2.0. Right now no matter if you have the upscaling on or of or turn the smoothing on or off, the games always look the same, just like they did on my old PS2, but with 2 black bars on the side. With 2.0 the games could be played fullscreen (no bars at all) and the upscaling and smoothing made the PS2 games look much better. I hope Sony doesn’t forget about the people who bought first release PS3’s, paid a lot for them and maybe would like to enjoy the PS3 BC as good as possible.
