The ability to sort content, particularly videos, into folders has long been asked for by the PlayStation community. Turns out we actually have it with Firmware 2.0. If you already knew this, then carry on your usual business – if not, then here’s a guide.
All you have to do is select a video, press triangle, go to Information and edit the “Album” – this will be the name of the folder it is grouped under. Give the same Album name to every video you want in that folder – it might seem a repetitive task, but after you’ve done it once you should only need to type two letters and let predictive text do the rest. When you’re done, press triangle on any video, go to “Group Content” and then “By Album”. As you can see in the picture above, it should group them all into album folders. The only downside, is that the moving video thumbnails don’t work any more.
This works for pictures, music (obviously), videos and games. So there we have it – custom content folders.

I noticed this too… really useful feature, and my things are now looking ace and organised, but you need a lot time to do it if you have a lot of videos, I have nearly 200 on mine, so it took forever, was worth it though… tis really nice to be able to do it with games too, sorting demos n games n stuff… ^_^

Nice, thanks for the tip - my Games list was getting very messy - now my OCD will be sated!

Too bad they omitted the option to sort games by name (what an odd omission). Why do I want to sort games by format (games come in different formats?)?

I hope they get the moving video thumbnails fixed, because I miss them so much that I cant use this feature

A handy tip: You can rename entire folders of videos.
I had 120+ videos to rename so I simply ran through all my movie trailers as fast as I could, renaming to an album called ‘h’ (the default character when you start renaming).
Once I had all my movies renamed to album ‘h’, I renamed their album folder to Movie Trailers. Made it a fraction quicker than renaming to ‘Movie Trailers’ each time.
Music However… not doable as I’ve 35Gbs of music. It *really* needs the ability to add entire albums to playlists…

Oh yeh and ThreeSpeech - can you find a fix for the Remote Start problem?
Basically when you enable the new Remote Start firmware 2.0 feature, the PS3 will turn itself on and off automatically, as it gets confused by pings from network items that are not PSPs trying to connect (thats an assumption).
There is some confusion in the community about this and a guide / details of how to prevent it would be great.

It can be really repetitive. I just used one letter abbreviations on each file for whichever folder I wanted it to be. Then I renamed that folder into something longer. It takes less clicks to type in “t” and start than to force it to go trailers with predictive text and then just rename ‘t’ to trailers later.

@Tony Nibbles
There is the option to add an entire album to a playlist.
Go into the playlist editor, ie, from playlist, tringle, edit, then press left on the D-Pad, to go to your music, click ‘x’ on an album (or however else you have the music grouped)
If you the press the tringle once more, you can add an individual track or press up on the D-pad and select ‘Add all’
Good stuff Sony thanks, I can now create playlists of favourite artists.

Nice article - I’d already done it, but I know a lot of people hadn’t realised it was now possible. A couple of issues though (some mentioned above) :
1. Need the option to sort Games by Title. This is available for Videos and Photos so why not Games ?
2. Need animated thumbnails for Videos. The thumbnails for Games are still animated so why not Videos ?
3. Whilst highlighting a folder in Photos and Videos, the names of any other folders are still visible. However, when looking at a folder under Games, any other folders are not named.
Also the transparency of certain thumbnails doesn’t look too good against the grey folder background (ie. LocoRoco).
Apart from that it’s great to finally be able to organise things properly.

i know that all my movies dont have the animated thumbnail anymore…….nearly destroyed me that did,i loved that
movies i downloaded of the store, didnt have the animated thumbnails, but teh ones i copied from my PSP memory card did,now they dont
and when sorting into folders,i would of liked for me to name the folders and move them myself, although it is better this way than the old way..seems an oppertunity has been lost

@12, 13: Did you know you can create the video thumbnail previews?
http://ps3explained.com/beginner/create-video-clip-previews/
Or is it that they stop working inside folders?

Nice feature but I think I prefer to see the video moving, maybe do this when my hard drive is busting at the seams.
