Latest PLAYSTATION®3 System Software Update Allows PSPTM to Turn PS3TM On and Off from Internet Connection for Enhanced Remote Play
Ability to customise XMB™ and add personalised playlists for both music and photos also enabled
London, 8 November 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced today the availability of the latest version of the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) system software. Version 2.00 features the ability to turn a PS3 system on and off remotely, using a PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable) system via the Remote Play1 function, allowing for a truly mobile partnership between the two systems.
Building on the success and potential of the Remote Play functionality, Version 2.00 will cement the partnership between PS3 and PSP and create a truly global experience. With the ability to turn your PS3 on and off from Wi-fi connection, there is now the opportunity to listen to the music, look at the photos and watch the videos saved on the PS3 Hard Disk Drive, anywhere in the world.
To further enhance the PS3 offering, Version 2.00 allows for the creation of personalised playlists in both the music and photo sections. This simple to use function gives users an opportunity to create unlimited music playlists for all occasions, as well as sharing favourite photos in glorious high definition.
Continuing with the idea of a personalised PS3, Version 2.00 allows for customisation of the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) menu screen. Change the colour and brightness with the greatest of ease or have something completely different by setting a custom theme. With the potential for new backgrounds to become available on PLAYSTATION®Network in the future, Version 2.00 truly opens up a whole raft of options.
A host of other enhancements includes the addition of an Information Board on XMB to keep people up to date on the latest PlayStation® news, the inclusion of a new PLAYSTATION Network category and logo for easier navigation and Trend Micro Web Security, a free2, state of the art internet security system, designed to give parents peace of mind.

You gotta be f***ing kidding me! 2.0 brings the ability to turn on the ps3 with a psp and setting backgrounds? That’s it?! F**k you Sony.

No in-game XMB
But the menu screen customisation is cool.

Comment by Silkworm — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:10 pm
Hmm, what a surprise, Sony disappoint once again for not adding access the XMB during in-game sessions. When will you “get” it? Why don’t you focus one-upping XBL instead? Geez, makes me wonder sometimes who makes the decisions over at Sony…

Sony what are you doing to yourselves.

I Actually think its pretty good and can i just say at least there doing something there not just doing nothing at all but tbh i kinda like it that there doing something about something maybe not XMB in game but its something

whats the point of remote play? you still need to have the PS3 on standby - its a useless feature to be honest and a waste of electricity
Comment by Paul — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:18 pm
in game XMB access won’t be until 2.02 or 2.20. You heard it from me first.
Comment by Matt — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:19 pm
Admittidly, there doesn’t appear to be a large number of changes seeing as it’s the big jump from 1.x to 2.x A certain section of the PS3 community will no doubt be seething when they read this. You know who you are!? Can I issue a pre-emptive ‘calm down, it’s only a firmware update’….
Comment by Lee Richards — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:19 pm
Absolute and Utter Crap. What a joke. It has been well known since day 1 that the PS3 needs in-game XMB and Music. The 360 has it but the ‘most powerful console’ can’t handle it. Sorry - I am officially annoyed. &&**((*^

“whats the point of remote play? you still need to have the PS3 on standby - its a useless feature to be honest and a waste of electricity”
It’s not useless if you have wifi when you’re away from home, and it’s a bigger waste of electricity to leave your PS3 fully on, all the time, in order to use remote play. This allows you to turn it on and off as you need it, remotely.
Comment by Ungot — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:29 pm
cmon we got this which is pretty good then uncharted demo and haze demo cmon life just gets better and better
Comment by OWEN — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:30 pm
Having just bought a PSP slim I tried the remote play function the other day. It realy is a waste of space/ Its very slow even on fast links. With 4Gb + memory cards these days why do you need it? Waste of electricity.
As for the update… Seems good….. I dont really care for in game XMB.
Comment by DaveTheRave — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:32 pm

Comment by ameppe — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:33 pm
Oh dear, well this was to be expected wasn’t it?
People build up hype and expectation off their own back, then they get disappointed when the features they want don’t materialise. Boo hoo. Get a life, or a get an Xbox. Either way, sthu.
I’m pleased about the Remote Play functionality improvement, although I’ll wait to try it myself, as I’m hoping you don’t have to leave the PS3 in a curious state in order to do initiate it.
I am curious about the customisation to XMB as I do find that it’s existing navigation and sorting/display of files when you’ve got a lot of directory structures to navigate can be a bit arduous.
Going back to the XMB access, I think I would be happy purely if they could provide access to create and and respond to the messages on the Friends list. The current setup clearly has the ability to show you when friends come on line, and when friends send you a message, so it can’t be anything out of the question to expand on, so to not have this clearly beneficial functionality yet is a little odd, but I’m certainly not going to throw my rattle out of the pram.
Comment by Chappers — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:34 pm
well, too bad i have to constantly quit the demos to tell my friends how good they are… c’mon sony at least in game messaging!
Comment by Roberto Flores — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:34 pm

i wonder how long it will take for this to occur…
Comment by ernesto — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:34 pm
i’m really dissapointed that there’s no mention of in-game XMB, but then again sony never said it would be included in 2.00, it’s just the internet that made all the anticipation. Also, “other enhancments include”???? it doesnt say “other enhancements ARE”… Maybe they’re hiding something
i hope so!!!
Comment by madmax100 — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:34 pm
RUBBIIISSSHHHH, In game XMB, you know its all we want, why can’t you just put it in!!! Pathetic jump. So now i can have the pleasure of paying for new PS3 themes and turning my ps3 on remotly via wifi hotspots that never exist. OH MY GOD, AMAZING.
Comment by Rory — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:34 pm
WHAT on EARTH are SONY up TO !?!? Has anyone sitting in Sony’s ivory tower, tried to organise an online game on their shiny console???? I seriously doubt it. What /have/ they been doing in the SEVEN years since the release of the PS2??? Certainly not watching the competition. They’ve been drinking Absolut madness.
Comment by graham — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:36 pm

Comment by JohnSketch — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:37 pm
Hey Sony, do you read sometimes any of the Billions requestes of people gave you 600 bucks?? (Oopps.. maybe you should at least read better their requests, they paied your console 100€ more having no second pad and games…)
Who cares of XMB Customisation when there is a lack of important features?? XMB access, Download with stand by console…. Come on, our patience is running out!
Comment by The Font — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:37 pm
Kinda disappointing…
Even if they don’t include ingame XMB access, this is a very poor update. How many people have both a PS3 and PSP? Sony releases nothing but updates for the combination of these two… I don’t care…!

All I want now is a file manager to allow me to better organize the hundreds of pictures, songs, and videos I have on my PS3. Just let me separate my files into folders and I’ll be happy. I could care less about in-game messaging and music from my HDD.
Comment by Maverick128 — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:38 pm
Well, not exactly what would be expected from a v2.00, these features have no use to me, don’t want to be bothered bo changing colors on my XMB.
REmote turn-on, I don’t know how the Hotspots are in the rest of the world, but here in DK there aren’t that many and they aren’t that reliable, so another feature that is useless to me.
The newsfeed is actually the ONLY feature I think is usefull for me, and that is definitly not a 2.00 upgrade.
And what is up with the Netnanny, do we really need that ??

Comment by WhiteWolfDK — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:38 pm
Great! Glad to see Sony is continuing to adapt and expand the PS3 user custom features. I think people go overboard over the whole in game XMB thing, how many games and how often would you drown out the in game audio for you’re own anyway?

I want to play online games, invite them to my game and be able to join theirs period. i dont care if it needs popup xmb. 360 has had this since day 1. were a year after launch and multiplayer is still a shambles. whats the point in having clans and teams if you struggle to join the same game.
this sucks balls and not in a good way
Comment by daveatfernie — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:42 pm
i figured that the in game XMB wasn’t going to happen but hey a kid can hope can’t he? let’s just hope it plays out better than what it looks like in the press release otherwise the gamers of the ps3 network will take to the streets and riot.

This is total BS. We were all waiting for one thing and they dont even try. Forget expectations, this is way beyond that. Sony better their act together because this is not good news.

So I’m still stuck sending SMS messages during games instead of using the network built into my pricey €650 console.
Get real!!!
Cue the forums being full of people who are clueless about networking and routers. These people will never figure out how to get their PS3 to come out of standby anywhere outside their home. It’s an almost pointless feature that would be well down most peoples wish lists.
Comment by Mick — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:52 pm
If Sony had turned the PSP into a remote control as well, for playing DVD and BluRay films say, then I would’ve been impressed and applauded them for saving fans from buying a separate DVD/BluRay Remote Control Unit.
Oh, silly me, it’s Sony I’m talking about. Sorry…I completely forgot.
I think that Sony can learn one plain and simple lesson from these posts and others elsewhere: Put XMB functionality in-game…QUICK!
All other features are simply trying to dress up a pig that’s already made a mess…
Comment by Zed Zee — Nov 7, 2007 @ 4:52 pm
I welcome our new customisation overlords.
Did you guys think that in game XMB was coming out in this major release? Has history taught you nothing?? All the best and more stable features come out with version 3.xx and beyond of something. Hear are some examples Window 3.11, Visual Basic 3.0, Delphi 3 the list goes on.
In-game XMB confirmed for release 3.x

eh i dont! i maybe leave it on for a short while but its switched off after a session - remote play may suit some but going out with your psp and leaving ur ps3 on standby all day is a simple waste of money!
Comment by Paul — Nov 7, 2007 @ 5:01 pm
I don’t understand what all the fuss is about. If you want to listen to your own music whilst playing games then could you not just switch on your stereo/cd player/mp3 player/radio etc……
Why would a game developer spend a load of dosh creating a soundtrack and in-game effects only for the user to switch this off and listen to their own music? As for the in game XMB i can see this being a bit of an issue but again most people could surely just pick up the phone for the time being. Let’s wait till tomorrow and see what it is really like.
Comment by Si Doob — Nov 7, 2007 @ 5:02 pm
Not arsed either way about in-game XMB at the moment. Glad Sony keep updating the capabilities via firmware upgrades though. I’ve owned consoles for a long time, and this is my first experience of a ‘constantly evolving’ piece of hardware.
Sony is also doing the biz elsewhere in my opinion, namely ‘games’ of which there are loads out this week, and in the coming weeks, that will probably cause me to part with my cash.
Keep up the good work, we’re getting there!
Comment by mrsatansdojo — Nov 7, 2007 @ 5:02 pm

Backgrounds are already being offered - please make a Heavenly Sword one, matching the image that comes up when you hover the cursor over the demo, I want that as my background, it would be brilliant!
I like the idea of the Information Board, I hope it meets my expectations of the potential of such a thing. Now they’re integrating a Playstation Network icon into the XMB, does that mean those games will be accessed there, instead of under games?

In-game XMB and especially in-game music seem to be things that needs to be integrated by the developers, anyway.

Comment by Reza — Nov 7, 2007 @ 5:09 pm
Sony,
The Playstation brand is about gaming. Being totally immersed into the experience. I could care less about in game music because i appreciate the work from developers. If you can do million dollar ads it will be a waste of time, since word of mouth is your best strategy. I for one (as well as others I’m sure) would not like the burden of leaving a game of Heavenly Sword on Hell mode (Roach is a cheater!) to check a message. Also leave the voting of firmware additions out unless ALL can vote.
Comment by idiealot — Nov 7, 2007 @ 5:10 pm
It’s a shame that Sony is trying to shoehorn all this PSP functionality into the PS3 to try and sell more units, all the while sacrificing PS3 gaming itself.
Selling Blu-Ray, Selling PSP’s.. What about making the game experience better?
Comment by Rask — Nov 7, 2007 @ 5:10 pm
Big Deal if theres no in-game XMB in this firmware. Sony know we want it and will have it in a firmware update down the track. I’m sure they just want to get it right.
What’s the difference if its not in 2.0. They could of just released this update as version 1.99 and everyone would of been ok with it.

But i would say im not pissed because they do seem to be working on it, but it will be probably months at least before the next update, we just need in game PSn messaging and in game music playback

please, just enjoy the stuff you get and don’t be such an a**hole, i really do hope that you all got more to do than just playing your ps3.
I really love the machine, been fan of the playstation brand since the first day i picked up a controller, so please don’t judge me for a fanboy or anything, some of you are just so god damn stupit, you’ll just have to do with the stuff you get. Sweet update…and those mad about in game XMB I remember reading about 6-8 months ago that Sony was working on reducing the memory footprint of the XMB for 2.0. I know this wasn’t mentioned but perhaps they will surprise us with in game music as the vote in GAP suggests. Or at least in the near future. I think 2.0 is opening doors for ingame xmb…just be patient. It will come.

im not gonna lie i love custimizing my ps3 so it not a bad update but… yes xmb would be nice in game or i think the main issue isnt even full access now just music access… it would be nice to play COD4 with some out my music in the background… but i do think based on one upgrade in this firmware its coming… because whats the point of in game music WITHOUT A PLAYLIST hmmm… some of you guys dont think… or would you rather have in game music where you gotta pause and pick the next song you wanna hear everytime… wah wah grow up people…
Comment by GAT — Nov 7, 2007 @ 5:36 pm
Stop complaining.
1) Sony have never promised in game XMB
2) When you bought it it didn’t have in game XMB, that’s like expecting a free CD player for your car if it came with a tape player. You knew what you were paying for.
2) Your system will be just a little bit better on Thursday that it is today.
3) If it’s a possible feature and demand is high then it will come when the time is right, it’s no point releasing something which may cause crashes.

Please Sony sort it out asap =)

In-game XMB did exist http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lluUBPzMcOw
and must have been removed from the OS to conserve memory.
To anyone who says it’s not important, try setting up an on-line game and figure out how to send the password to buddies without quiting to the XMB.
Comment by Mick — Nov 7, 2007 @ 5:41 pm
I personally think its a good update. I have been waiting for the power on lan function for a long while now, as remote playing of MP3s has been unpractical in the past. Of course ingame messaging and XMB would be nice, but its not the end of the world. People need to get a grip on what matters in life. Chill Winston!
I am 99% sure that SONY will be working hard on the ingame XMB function as I type. They are a business at the end of the day and need to keep us lot interested. Working in IT i know that system development isnt the easiest thing in life, so small things may be just delaying them.
Or I may be talking out my arse. Go ahead, flame me!

My PS3 is always on. With the exception of when it’s in Standby. Sure, you could say it’s because I dont have to worry about electricity bills, since it’s included in the monthly renting bill. It’s like DSL. Sometimes you don’t use it that much, and you lose money, but other times you use a vast amount and have a nice big grin on your face!
I wonder why this firnware took so long to make. They do say that there are more stuff still to be revealed, but it’s fair to assume that the biggest features are revealed first. So hmm…

BTW, It also would have been nice to have auto-shutdown when all pending downloads have completed.

Comment by stoney — Nov 7, 2007 @ 6:10 pm
This is complete and utter BS. IN game XMB was a feature advertised as being on PS3s even before it hit the market.
Did sony really have to survey the G A P Panel to figure out that gamers have been screaming about ingame xmb for a year….honestly.
SONY WE DONT CARE ABOUT ALL THIS OTHER STUFF
WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO READ AND SEND MESSAGES DURING GAMES. AND PLAYING CUSTOM MUSIC WITH WHICHEVER GAME WE LIKE.
On the contents of this update:
The themes thing is kinda cool….but it still looks like the only text color we can have is white….WORTHLESS. We want to change our text color so that I can have black text on a white based wallpaper.
The messageboard seems more like a form of viral marketing as most everything we need to keep up to date with is usually made clear on the PS Store. if this new “Messageboard” eats up any resources(which I know it must) then what is the POINT if you guys cant even free up enough resources to access XMB ingame.
I have long been on Sony’s side but this just seems like a big FU
Comment by nurayi — Nov 7, 2007 @ 6:14 pm

————-
Well, XMB-Access while playing games is not supported, sad but true!
(*whisper* think about more RAM next time, Sony
BUT afaik ingame-music is supported by PS3.
The Devs just have to code it! Maybe Sony should think about coding it for them so it will be used more often (has it been used in any game???).
Comment by The Grim Reaper — Nov 7, 2007 @ 6:37 pm
this has been something that gamers have been clamoring for since the beginning. and it was shown as a feature that would be standard out of the box: http://youtube.com/watch?v=... (around 2:30 mark)
Its rediculous they just act like they are just figureing out there is massive demand for it (an option on the GAP survey….) I mean WTF ingame xmb should be IN THE WORKS, and the survey should have been between 3 features we’d never asked about. But with this survey it seems like they are trying to get by as long as possible without XMB access.
What bothers me is that with this announcement they arent even like, we are just about through with ingame XMB and should implement it shortly”, or “we are working through the bugs and it should be out by christmas”. But it seems to me like they are just sweeping it under the rug until they find a more opportune time to give us another feature that should have been there a year ago.
People can say all they want that you should listen to the game’s sound and custom soundtracks detract from gameing immersion, but there are obvious times: designer half a$$ed the music list (motorstorm), online games, driving games, where many people would rather have some of their own tunes overlayed.
Plus I dont think anyone could argue that not being able to send and view messages in game is a good thing.
Comment by nurayi — Nov 7, 2007 @ 6:40 pm

After all, isnt that why you bought a next gen machine, to enhance your GAMING EXPERIENCE!
Comment by b dizzle — Nov 7, 2007 @ 6:48 pm
I agree it’s a good update - but a bad move on Sonys’ part by calling it 2.0. If this had came out as 1.95 - everyone would just have thought it was an incremental update and one step closer to the mythical internet rumor of firmware 2.0.
Comment by BlueGene — Nov 7, 2007 @ 6:48 pm
This update is an embarrassment. Post 99 proves it was there at some point, but was mysteriously removed. Pathetic!
X360 gamers must be LAUGHING their heads off, let alone Microsoft themselves.
The updates in this release are worth a .xx number - not a major release number. But then again, even this proves how amateurish Sony really are with all their programming.

I want to understand something
- It’s a major version right ? (we go from number 1.xx to 2.xx)
then
- why the only added functionnality are graphical functionnality , and a playlist (which is useful but don’t deserve a major version)
For example , to change from kde3 to kde4 , the lower layer (QT) are changed, a large majority of kde is upgrade and have new functionnality. Not only 3.
- Where are the possibility to create some … directory in our video ?
- Where are the possibility to actually … SEE a movie ?
Sony said it’s a media center … which can’t understand H.264 (I speak H.264 video which are encoded by anyone… These’s video are with profile main or high and level of 5.1. the ps3 is castrated at the level 4.1. Anything better can’t be played…
The free, open source and free software codec (ffmpeg) can do the job. the only thing sony must do, is to optimize the code for the cell.)
)
- Where are the possibility to see a … DIVX/MPEG-4 ?
And the last but not the least
- Where are the possibility to play our music in our game?
Comment by briaeros007 — Nov 7, 2007 @ 7:15 pm

Why should 360 gamers laugh?
The 360 went through the same growing pains. The updates couldn’t come fast enough and the content was never enough. I remember the flame posts on xbox.com last year. If you don’t like it you should sell your console and buy a Wii or hand held system.

I think if they could implement in-game XMB easily then they would have done by now - it’s not that they don’t realise we want it, I think it’s because it’s technicially challenging.
I’m no techie but I’m guessing that in-game XMB would need more memory and increase the 96MB of RAM already being used by the OS. When you consider that games are designed to use all the RAM that is available (remaining), suddenly making a change that means the OS consumes more memory would cause all sorts of problems with games running out of memory… I guess!
Comment by Obli — Nov 7, 2007 @ 7:41 pm
man you guys are a bunch of moaners.
they didnt do what they never said they would.
deal with it.
IF they are going to do it, then they will in their own time. im sure they have their own reasons for not doing it in two and a half seconds, but contrary to popular belief, SONY dont actually have magic programmers who can type at three quarters of the speed of light.
besides if they gave all the features out straight away, what would be left? it would just be the competition able to update and surpass.
leave SONY alone, they are giving you updates for free. they arnt making you use them (unless you buy a new game), they arnt making you pay for downloading them.
instead, thank them for bothering to support a system that costs $1000
as someone said earlier in the blog, if you want a console with xbox2 features so badly what you want is a xbox2.

Every update is really for a security patch for people whp try to hack the firmware (they still can’t do 1.1 yet)
But no ones going to bother updating their consoles just for this patch, so Sony throws in a feature or two. Doesn’t have to be useful or something the users want, it’ll be anything simple like custom themes. Why can’t Sony give us the features from the top ten instead of features in the bottom half of the top 100? Sony should forget these .1 updates and give us a huge update. So instead of Sony giving us 2.1 next month or when ever, Sony should wait till they get all the features packed in then release version 3.0. And get a bigger team working on the firmware.
How many more times does everyone have to say we all want in-game access to the xmb? And I want custom soundtracks in games like WWE smackdown. The 360 version has it for the enterance but PS3 users have to pick their enterance from a list of crappy tunes. And don’t say it can’t be done as there is already a game in Japan that allows you to access your music.
Comment by bamf — Nov 7, 2007 @ 8:16 pm

You are all a bunch of cry babies. Sony said nothing about in game XMB access, they haven’t promised it and they haven’t said “oh it’ll be a feature”. They’re probably working on it but the BIG HYPE came from the BIG HYPE MACHINE known as the internet.
I don’t care what my PS3 can do as long as it can play the games I want to play and the movies I want to watch.
A lot of people are taking the fun out of gaming by arguing what system has better graphics, or what system has better features. It shouldn’t matter if you just want to play games and watch movies.

This is exactly what I wanted in the update so now I can turn on my PS3 remotely from work and listen/watch my entire media library. Everyone shouldn’t be expecting anything big until Sony releases Home then more updates will come in to play. This update is good for people like me who uses both the PSP & PS3 together in a lot of situations.

@58 - LOL - that had me in stitches! I couldn’t have said it better myself. I think a lot of people here expect too much from Sony. Let’s at least try firmware 2.0 out before moaning about it. Yes, I would also like to have XMB in game but we can’t have everything at once. What Sony could do better though is give us PS3 owners the chance to vote for the features we most want to see (picked from a sensible list though).

Maybe, just maybe, 2.0 lays the ground work for better things to come. Maybe there is more going on under the hood than what we are aware of. To release a major number upgrade, usually means there is something big underneath, possibly even a re-write.
It may not be apparent just yet.
Comment by Savage — Nov 7, 2007 @ 11:24 pm
Sony should really make a firmware update which lets u play ur ps3 music tracks during game play of any game, or demo. That would make the ps3 in lamens terms the best console out there XD

All has already been said but I wanted to add my little contribution to the general frustration…
The features in 2.0 are ok BUT It’s not the first thing to add to the PS3. We really need in-game access to the friend list.
Who really care about playlist? That’s useless IMO. The PS3 won’t be a real media center as long as it won’t play avi files.
MY QUESTIONS (but I guess I will never get answers): is Sony aware of our frustration? Is Sony doing something for us? Why don’t we have in-game XMB yet? When will we see something really interesting?
Comment by Didier H. — Nov 8, 2007 @ 12:05 am

“Stop complaining.
My sentimants exactly. Why complain, your not paying for the firmware updates, and you knew what you were getting when you bought the system. Just be happy that the FW updates make the system a little bit better one update at a time. Before you know it you’ll have everything your whining about so be patient.

This is not a next version update. It is merely an incremental update. This was Sony’s chance to shine and make consumers wish they had the new features of the PS3. They have made a grave error. It almost seems they are lazy. How can a company like Sony not come up with something better than this a year down the road?

“Another reason not to turn my PS3 on: lack of in game friends access”.
So, because you can’t access the XMB or messaging while screaming over the jumps in Motorstorm you are going to switch the PS3 off and do none of those things? What bo11ocks are you talking? Because you can’t see friends in a game you are not going to see them at all?
I spot another 360 owner.
First we hear complaints about lack of games; now we hear complaints about not being able to interrupt your games with all those things you first claimed were superfluous in a gaming device!!!
Methinks you are trolls.
Comment by Jay — Nov 8, 2007 @ 1:21 am
I Completely agree with *146 This is a huge mistake people wanted in-game very badly from the very start and even uptil this point just to play games like RFOM and the new COD4. I’m sure when alot of people who have heard about this will decide to buy call of duty 4 for xbox 360… Its not about power and graphics or the “Cell” its about delivery and having a unified network and PSN = PS3 are not unified as much as i want it to be. Im sure most people here are whilling to admit once Killzone 2 and Metal Gear solid 4 comes out and those features aren’t on the table and once i beat those games with out those features on the table im gonna sell my ps3 on ebay, It will happen, regardless if anyone here wants to argue about it or not it will happen if those kind of ’small’ things aren’t embedded into the ps3 for real gaming enthusiast.
Comment by trouter — Nov 8, 2007 @ 1:21 am
Anyone who questions the benefits of XMB access in-game clearly has never had a 360. It feels like having your arm cut off when you jump over to the PS3. Not being able to chat, send invites, arrange games while playing different games seems like going back a generation.
As for in-game music, I think there’s been an assumption from some that it masks the games soundtrack completely. It doesn’t. All the in-game sound effects, dialogue etc. are still there. It’s a great feature on the 360.
Sony must know these are must have features on the PS3, I’m confident they’re going to be there at some point, the problem is that Sony don’t like to communicate with the their customers, shrouding the whole thing in secrecy and allowing the vacuum to be filled by all sorts of rumours.
The console’s been out a year. By now the PS3s feature list should have exceeded the 360. It hasn’t and Sony need to at least outline what they hope to achieve with future updates. If we’re all informed we’re less likely to get upset.
Comment by Kubr1ck — Nov 8, 2007 @ 1:22 am
Think this update is fine. Remote play link-up with the PSP entirely justifies the 2.0. But even if it doesn’t, don’t you realise the pathetic nature of arguing over decimal points?
I’d like to see widgets added to the RSS plan. Much more useful on a ten-second startup device like the PS3 than on a two-minute device like a PC.
Also, a decent web browser and music player. Current ones are useless.
We already know in-game XMB is on the way so quit your bitching, girls.

I’d love that feature as well, i hate leaving my ps3 on overnight… as with 90% of everyone else, in-game xmb would’ve been great and I also agree that this is at most a minor incremental change, not a major one. That said, I do apreciate and like the new features added.

** FOR CONSIDERATION IN FUTURE FIRMWARE UPDATES **
Please add the ability enable audio output on the PS3 while being controlled with the PSP. This is a feature that many audio/video enthusiasts are looking for. This functionality will cement the PS3 as THE BEST standard delivered home media center solution. Users will no longer have to turn on their plasma, LCD, or projector just to choose a song, and it would be great for controlling speakers connected to zone 2 on the users surround receiver. Again, use the PSP to select songs, create playlists, etc. via Remote Play, and have the audio output through the PS3 to the users home stereo or home theater.

Im sick of the ITS COMING SOON bullcrap. My $40 dollar dvd player with divx compatibility plays more movie formats than the PS3. Divx capable my butt. Im a patient person, but iv had the console for a year and havent seen any major improvements. Just these crappy touch-up updates. Ive got the cash for a 360 and im gettin one. At least it has in-game XMB. And hell yeah, ill pay for the yearly online fee. Obviously the free service route isnt going to pay off in the longrun. I would say you get what you pay for, but hell, the PS3 I bought was more expensive than the 360. So i guess sometimes you just get screwed. I was hoping the 2.0 firmware would give me some boasting power in my console battles with my friend. Ill just have to eat crow and admit to my buddy with a 360 that he’s got the better system. FOR CHEAPER.

Whinging or not, in-game XMB is essential if Sony want to complete with Live for the online space. The current implementation is horrible.

“The PS3 HAS HAD in game xmb… why not now? it obviously works…”
Well obviously it doesn’t otherwise they would have included it. I would imagine there are some problems with some of the more memory intensive games, even if there is only one crash in 100 uses that would be an unacceptable failure rate, and wouldn’t be allowed to be released to the general public. That footage is from a debug which always contains more experimental code. There will be plenty of other things the debugs can do which the consumer units can’t, but that doesn’t mean they are stable enough to be released.
Comment by John — Nov 8, 2007 @ 8:28 am
An updated internet browser is required. The browser at the minute is far too clunky to be of much use and has other problems :
1) Is always running out of memory
2) Needs to be able to use all the latest plugins (Flash etc)
3) Needs to stop prompting to be able to use cookies when you’ve already accepted it for a site and get asked on every page of that site again and again.
4) The interface when used with a keyboard is too slow, for instance, when you type into a form box you get the popup keyboard onscreen - I understand this is useful for people who don’t have a USB/bluetooth keyboard, but why not have the option of turning this off if you DO have a keyboard ?
If we had an email client / messenger client aswell then I could almost get rid of my PC!

Im disappionted like most PS3 users but the reaction to this is unbeliveable!!
Firstly the real big thing was remote start-up. It’s been said you can access your ps3 from anywhere in the world but im sorry if i was going on holiday there’s no way i’d leave my ps3 on standby and keep my wi-fi going as well. And if i wanted to listen to music on the go that’s what memory sticks can be used for last time i checked, PLUS you would have to stick to the same wi-fi hotspot to stay connected.
What i’d like as much as XMB is the ability to play divx files or proper avi ones. Currently i have to convert which takes about as long to watch the file as it does to convert it. While the other features arnt totally useless i would have expected more from a 2.0 release and with remote play being the big hitter function, who really gives a shit about custom menus? It’s all a bit disappointing just now but surely we must be used to it by now.
Sometimes i think we expect too much from Sony Corp but tbh the console has been around for a year now and we should really start to see some serious improvment other than new menus and remote play.
It’s clearer than ever now that te ability to access in-game messages will appear with home whenever it launches which i wouldnt be surprised if it’s late into next year.
Nevermind sony better luck time with 2.10!

My word this really has wound some people up again. And again it just seems to be the people that didn’t get what they wanted so again they chuck all their toys out the pram again. Ah, BOO HOO…
For me this is a very good update. Personally I see the benefit of taking my PSP into work on a Thursday and at lunch time, turning on my PS3 at home, downloading the updates from the PSN so by the time I get home, the downloads are done and I can spend a couple of hours on the new updates. Whereas at the moment I start downloading on Thursday night and don’t get the chance to have a look until Friday night - if the wife lets me use the thing otherwise I’ll have a go on the weekend.
Personally I have no use for in game XMB - I’m happy enough wit the soundtracks to games as they are. After all the developers spent enough time and money on game soundtracks so I don’t feel I need to change them. I wouldn’t want to switch the sound in a movie to my own music so I see little point in game. Some people may believe this to be very important and that’s their choice but just because it’s not available yet doesn’t warrant the sheer enormous levels of abuse thrown at Sony.
Another point being the ability to see your friends online and send messages during games. Well I don’t play many online games, I don’t have clans etc. and usual game friends so again this would be wasted on me. Perhaps this is something that is going to be introduced alongside Home next year. Makes more sense to me to do so.
Maybe Sony do read this forum and do take on the comments here. After all, those that don’t throw countless levels of abuse and expletives towards Sony then end up getting the things on the PS3 sooner. Those that end up kicking and screaming like small children, don’t. Why should they pander to those ungrateful idiots and upset the already happy customers? Most people keep comparing things to the Xbox - well if you all want things to be like an Xbox, why not go buy an Xbox? If you want a PS3, then get a PS3 and don’t go complaining that it doesn’t do things it doesn’t say it does. At least the PS3 is evolving and improvements under the hood are happening fairly regularly.
One final point, it really gets me quite annoyed when people in their posts say things towards Sony as “We want this..” and “We want that…”. It’s not WE - it’s YOU (as in you should be saying “I want this” [or perhaps "I would like this" but manners don't seem to be apparent in a vast number of opinions]). Just because YOU want something doesn’t mean the rest of us necessarily do.
(PS to ThreeSpeech, from post 143 the typeface is in Italics and I don’t think it should be…)
Comment by Dave Vincent — Nov 8, 2007 @ 9:31 am
As someone who runs a cross platform gaming website I can say that the Firmware 2.0 is a big dissapointment. I can’t understand why it’s a jump to 2.0? I work for a major software company and major revisions get major increment numbers. So either there is a big change in the stack or Sony are overegging the firmware numbers.
The majority of my members have both platforms for gamings and the online features of the PS3 are getting left behind more and more.
I have to say there’s not one feature that’s of any intersest to me or most of the people on my website. If we could get in game messaging and a common communications library then that’s all we want. If we have to wait for the release of Home to get it then it’s a long wait between now and then.
We run a lot of online games and leagues, and the Ps3 side struggles mainly due to the poor network feature list compared to the 360.

Just furthur to my post, I wonder why the new Game Grouping wasn’t hyped up some more? I know I’ve been waiting for it for a loooong time, and now it’s finally here.
In case nobody else has noticed it, you can now group the items in your Games list by ‘Album’. You then go to each game, hit Triangle, then type a value in the Album property. This then creates a folder for this game, and puts all other games in that folder that you give the same title to.

It’s quite possible that the v2.0 nomenclature has meant some major changes under the skin so I remain happy that there has been another step of improvement. I won’t lie and say that I’m not in the in-game-XMB camp as a predominantly online community gamer, but I like to think that this functionality is down the road and that I’d rather it was done well rather than rushed out to meet expectations. For now I’m looking forward to testing the remote PSP functionality… :o)

This update could have been better. two things the Ps3 really needs is in game access to the XMB (for access to the messaging service) and sequential video playback. I dont think the the ability to use music on your hardrive in game will ever appear as a firmware update - surely thats a software issue? If we all want it (and we do) then game developers should release patches for their games to include this as a option. - there could then be an option in - say motorstorm - to add music to the in game playlist from your hardrive. Or to have background music in Warhawk. I think we should pester game companys to include this, as Sony dosent look like adding this anytime soon. Does anyone else think the lack of Sequential video playback in this update is a total pain?
New firmware updates on the PSP lets the PSP do this - you can skip to the next video with the shoulder buttons. It also added a nice scene search option and shuffle mode - and it works like a dream.
And a video playlist option wouldnt go a miss either.
Sony really should add this feature to match the PSP if they’re serious about the PS3 being a home media centre, especially with the arrival of PlayTv soon.
Comment by Anthony — Nov 8, 2007 @ 11:06 am
I quite like the PSN logo - at least we can see that Sony are trying to make a brand out of the service, much like Live.
The only thing that’s weird - can anyone confirm that to enable Remote Play over the net means that the PS3 has to keep turning off and on every 5 minutes?
Comment by MrGilder — Nov 8, 2007 @ 11:06 am

I hope that someone is reading these comments in full and reporting a summary of the suggestions back to Sony.
With regard to altering the font on the XMB, I was also hoping you could change the colour of the text.
I have a wallpaper which I’m pretty fond of but unfortunately it has quite a bit of white and it sometimes interferes with the XMB text.
Surely it can’t be too hard to include a colour customisation option for the XMB text too?
Also concerning the display order of Music files. I’m surprised at the lack of integration between the PS3 and Sony’s Network Walkman players. I have an NW-HD5H 30GB model and can only display tracks sorted by album which is a pain as I have a sizeable collection.
I’d really like to display them by artist and have not yet seen an update that would allow me to do so unless I copy my music to my HD which I don’t want to do.
Please pass these comments to Sony in the hope of an update.
As an aside I think the general consensus is that, after all the hype surounding 2.0, it is fairly disappointing.
Comment by KeanosMagicHat — Nov 8, 2007 @ 11:44 am
There are a lot of posts here complaining about people who are being negative about this update. I think the crux of the matter is that despite Sony saying it’s listening to it’s fans, it obviously isn’t. It’s tough when you shelled out a lot of money on the product and your views and those of many other PS3 owners are not being addressed. The 2.0 update is great, its got all sorts useful features which move the functionality forward just a little bit. However it hasn’t done anything for a number of major features which people have been asking for from the get go. It’s that which is troubling. Sony say they are listening, but what are they listening too? If they are listening why are they scared to tell us if these items will ever be addressed. They must get fed up of being flamed every time a firmware update comes out as it does nothing to inspire confidence in their product or their ability to support it.

Cor - grouping games in the XMB allows me to choose between putting all my games in one big folder labelled ‘Playstation3′ or all my games in one big folder called ‘Unknown’…. not quite the flexible approach to grouping I was hoping would solve the giant list of demos hanging off my XMB
Comment by stever — Nov 8, 2007 @ 12:16 pm
WTF Sony? This firmware release just proves that you over-promise and under-deliver. You say we can make our own themes when there is only one to choose from and no sign of the software that you need for customisation. How long will the software take; another year? Don’t even get me started on the lack of in-game XMB! Pathetic Sony, just pathetic

Nice update, the rumours for 2.0 were just rumours. The moaners out there need to be thankful that SONY is improving the PS3 all the time.
Regarding in game XMB, which isn’t vital for me, Resistance has it via the menu’s so it must be possible for the developers to enable it or at least something similar.
I have a suggestion for a future release if anyone is interested. Add an option to AUDIO SETTINGs to allow all Audio to go through bluetooth 2.0 A2DP so I can use my SONY stereo bluetooth headset to hear Game/ Music and chat. Useful at night where I’m forced to Turn down my 5.1 system.
Thanks Sony.

since the update my logic3 ps2-ps3 joypad adapter no longer woks correctly.
no led’s displaying what number the pad is assigned to, the pads still work though but kinda annoying having to check using the PS button.
anyone else noticed anything else odd?

Extremely disappointed with this update and getting nervous about this great piece of kit. Such potential.
Be bold, and give us divx support before the xbox dashboard update (which will, as extenders now have it). Stop reacting and start setting the trends again. The hardware just calls out quality, so let’s get moving.
Also, don’t wait for Home to give achievements, and don’t be scared to copy good ideas. Some ideas don’t need to be enhanced in the first iteration.

They’re leaving the in-game options til that useless 3D advertising avatar service home (that the majority of people don’t want) is introduced. Waste of time. Yay! I can access my photos and music anywhere in the world thanks to my PS3! I’m pretty sure that one of the reasons Sony touted the PSP as a must have piece of kit was the ability to put things on the pro duo and look at them anywhere in the world. Its almost as if they can’t be bothered anymore.

“I really love the machine, been fan of the playstation brand since the first day i picked up a controller, so please don’t judge me for a fanboy or anything, some of you are just so god damn stupit, you’ll just have to do with the stuff you get.”
Congrats on misspelling “stupid” and looking like a complete ass
Also, not being a PS3 owner, I’m sitting here literally laughing at Sony and the horrible mess they have created.. I don’t know why they just don’t give up now and save themselves a lot of hassle and money.
Comment by Buy_A_Wii — Nov 8, 2007 @ 8:33 pm
i think ths is a joke and sony have missed an opportunity to impress those people looking for a console for xmas.
all weve really been given is some new backgrounds (so what!) and the ability to make playlists. if they could have included this into the games, then that would have been great, but just to make playlists? what a let down.
2.0 is purely cosmetic, and therefore a waste of time. many owners would have forgotten sonys past slip ups if 2.0 was good, but im afraid theyve probably made them a lot angrier. i am anyway.
good job ive got smackdown vs raw coming tomorrow so i can take out my frustration on that midget rey mysterio!

Can you guys hurry up and rip off Xbox Live exactly please? I’m fed up with additions I couldn’t care less about.
Comment by Guru Larry — Nov 8, 2007 @ 9:23 pm
Oh, and what made you guys change “The Getaway Online” to HOME? Whats that all that about?
Comment by Guru Larry — Nov 8, 2007 @ 9:25 pm
i hope they never bring in in-game xmb just to mess with you all.
or at least if they do, that it costs $50 to install.
Comment by Alan — Nov 8, 2007 @ 10:54 pm
SLOW SLOW SLOW SLOW. These should have been included with e ps3 a long time ago.
Comment by 3sicasity — Nov 9, 2007 @ 5:04 am
Stop whining. If you want new feature, you need to hack the firmware. Then Sony get off their ass and make some new features for you.
No Hack=No Motivation!!!
Comment by Biguns — Nov 9, 2007 @ 5:16 am
all i want to ask sony is…. do you think Game Stop would trade a 60 gig ps3 with 3 games and a bluetooth headset for a 360?
Comment by atreyu — Nov 9, 2007 @ 5:32 am
“SCE continues to evaluate opportunities to provide new functionality to PS3 on an ongoing basis. New features and functionality have continually been added to the system since it debuted, and we will continue to update you with new developments.” [From US blog - 266 - as mentioned above]
That sentence is text book PR college stuff.
Give this guy some kind of award, please, Sony. He’s got to be one of your best PR speaking people, who’s words mean ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, that I’ve ever read in my life.

I’m begining to wonder if the people constantly moaning about lack of “in game XMB” actually have any friends to contact. It seems to me that the majority of them are bitter, selfish, foul mouthed idiots. Why anyone would want to communicate with them is a mystery to me.

These guys think 2.0 is the single greatest thing in the history of games:

Does anyone know how I can get the update onto storage media? The Japanese and American sites are saying ‘download version 2.0 here’ but when i do its actuall 1.93 again…very frustrating!
Comment by Steph — Nov 9, 2007 @ 11:47 am
That’s hardly worth a major version number bump, is it?
I am unhappy. I can’t get a 360 because they commit suicide, and I can’t get a PS3 because Sony have completely lost the plot. I’ve got a Wii, but there are only three good games for it (with another one out soon “yay”).
Comment by Mark — Nov 9, 2007 @ 1:06 pm
“Boo Hoo you babies, it’s still a good console. Go buy a 360 if you want all features of a 360.”
a good console… is it?… is it really?!
Comment by Job Bones — Nov 9, 2007 @ 1:21 pm
The games industry has hit an all time low, not just PS3 but the whole lot of it reeks.
And by the way can sony put a figure on how many people petitioned them to be able to switch on their PS3 with their PSP?
I read a lot of forums and have yet to see one instance of a person ask for this in the update.
Comment by Ton Capone — Nov 9, 2007 @ 1:46 pm
@ 247:
And why is it that there’s an almost AUTOMATIC assumption that EVERYONE owns a PSP?
If those who are so ridiculously loyal to Fony or simply trying to justify their expensive console purchase, can bear that point in mind for a microsecond, they’ll come to the inescapable conclusion that update v2.0 is bland and utterly useless!
Comment by Zed Zee — Nov 9, 2007 @ 2:02 pm
@ 248
At last someone who can see sense and when we are being mugged.
I don’t even know anyone who has a PSP nevermind anyone so reckless as to leave their PS3 on standby all day on the off chance they might want to switch it on when they are not at home.
Carbon footrpints and all that.
Comment by Ton Capone — Nov 9, 2007 @ 3:11 pm
@Tony
I have a PSP and a PS3, and my PS3 hasn’t been turned off since March apart from 6 hours when I had a power cut. From now on I will leave it on the remote connect mode every Thursday
Comment by John — Nov 9, 2007 @ 5:01 pm
@ 250
That’s very intersting but I don’t know you so my comment is correct that I don’t know anyone who has a PSP.
Do you not think that leaving a console on for the best part of 8 months is a frivolous waste of energy and damaging to the environment?
Were you that desperate to download videos of cut scenes/someone else playing a game?
Comment by Ton Capone — Nov 9, 2007 @ 5:50 pm
Pretty ridiculous if you ask me. As always, PS3 fanboys are heard yet again saying, “Just you wait until next year, it will be great!”
Well, keep waiting then. Sony doesn’t seem to care enough for it’s customers to be arsed to do something so trivial as making the gaming experience more enjoyable on their all powerful console.
Fanboys, when will you get it through your head? The PS3 is a blu-ray player with gaming tacked on as an afterthought and not the other way around. After all, you don’t need a friends list to watch Spiderman 3.
And all these ridiculous features to more tightly integrate PSP functionality with the PS3. I don’t know if Sony is hoping that PSP owners will think it’s cool and go out to buy a PS3 or whether they are trying to get PS3 owners to help PSP sales. In either case, the only beneficiary is Sony.
When will Sony get it through their thick skulls that the games is what matters?
Comment by mikelimtw — Nov 9, 2007 @ 7:08 pm
So Sony give us the options only a few asked for and ignore what the masses wanted, is this the new customer focused sony. As a Sony user since PS1, I am getting fed up of the rubbish sony throw at it’s users. Great I can switch my PS3 on with my PSP, why is that important in making the PS3 a better machine.
Not quite the worst update ever, but the most disappointing in my eyes
Comment by clem — Nov 15, 2007 @ 6:40 am
Thank you Sony for improving my PS3. Now I will buy a PSP to use full potential of my PS3, and i will be able to view my movies from any wifi hotspot right ? great !!!!!
