Interesting story over at Telegraph.co.uk. GCHQ, Government Communications Headquarters, is an intelligence and security organisation and Civil Service Department, which reports to the Foreign Secretary and works closely with the UK’s other intelligence agencies (MI5 and MI6).
GCHQ will embed job adverts within the online multi-player versions of espionage games and hope to attract applicants for high-tech roles including signals intelligence (digital “eavesdropping”), and to protect government information systems from hackers.
“It’s certainly not in the James Bond mould of spy work,” said a spokesperson for GCHQ.
In the second of a series of articles, Dazed & Confused technology editor Chris Hatherill checks out the power of distributed computing…
Ever dreamed of discovering a new planet? Or creating artificial intelligence? How about saving the earth? Or finally cracking cancer, HIV or malaria? Back in the old days, you’d need a PhD, a labcoat and several million pounds. Today, all it takes is a PS3. By harnessing the power of the little black box under your TV (or that white one on your desk), researchers are building a new kind of ‘supercomputer’ to help solve some of the toughest problems in maths, biology, astronomy, physics and earth science. And you can help.
Ratchet & Clank was set for release on Oct 30 in the US, but over the last couple of days there have been multiple reports claiming some retailers were going to be selling the game at an earlier than planned date. These rumours were initially said to be false. However, Sony have said the following on their official forum:
“As frequent PlayStation.Blog readers will remember, about two weeks back we announced Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction had gone gold and would ship to stores Oct 30. Well, due to some unexpected quickness at the factory, a vast majority of retailers have already received the game. With that, some retailers are choosing to release the game next week instead of waiting until the 30, which we are all too happy to allow. Official launch date remains October 30, but for those who can’t wait to use your trigger fingers on the Tornado Launcher (or any other weapon in Ratchet’s arsenal), check with your local game retailer next week.”

Ubisoft’s hugely anticipated game is out next month, and Three Speech’s Chris Burke got some quality hands-on time with this potential medieval masterpiece.
It’s 1191 AD. The Third Crusade is tearing the Holy Land apart, and it’s up to you to try and stop the conflict by killing its chief protagonists on both sides, Crusaders and Saracens. You play as Altair, a member of the original assassin’s creed, the Hashashin – who, in between smoking a lot of medieval skunk, would kill people for money, or sometimes for the greater good. Altair is one of the more honourable assassins, of course, but aside from his worthy ideals that form the main storyline, you also get to take on plenty of side contracts.
Assassin’s Creed literally puts the sand in ‘sandbox’. The game is absolutely massive. Not only do you have the run of a three massive middle-eastern cities – Jerusalem (the only city we’ve been able to play so far), Damascus and Acre - and there’s also the assassins’ home town of Masyaf. We also managed to spend a fair bit of time tearing round a huge area of countryside called The Kingdom in between. Outside the cities, you’ll need to commandeer a horse to traverse the hills and valleys, and control of your nag is the best we’ve seen. You can even rear Dobbin up in spectacular Hollywood fashion, and you can also, crucially, fight from horseback.
SCEA CEO Jack Tretton has been talking about PS3 development challenges following the price drops, saying the format has “sacrificed short-term challenges for long-term wins”.
Speaking with Newsweek’s Level Up blog, Tretton was asked about the problems developers reportedly face in dealing with PlayStation 3’s large, complex architecture.
“The other thing you need to do, with anybody who follows this industry, is remember that people have selective memories,” he said.
“We’ve heard that our machines are hard to develop for, because the technology is fairly forward thinking. We’ve heard that on the original PlayStation, the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation 3.
“So we’ve certainly dealt with this before, we’ve heard the same criticisms of the PlayStation 1 and the PlayStation 2, but at the end of the day, the developers got up to speed, the consoles enjoyed an extremely successful long ten-year roadmap.”
“There are other machines that may have been easier to develop for early on, but certainly didn’t have the staying power, based on what happened historically. Certainly that’s our hope and expectation with PlayStation 3. If it’s put in a perspective of ten years, the first eight to ten months is taken relative to getting out the gate quickly and potentially fizzling out in less than ten years. That’s certainly never been our intention. We sacrificed short-term challenges for long-term wins.”
None of Capcom’s secrets can stay secret at the minute, it would seem. First the Megaton announcement was leaked before Capcom could even announce it themselves (Street fighter 4 being in development), and now the trailer to Capcom’s other big news story (Bionic Commando remake) has been leaked. I’ve watched the trailer and from what I saw, it looks set to be a cool game.
The trailer shows the game’s protagonist performing free fall jumps and swinging his way through a war torn futuristc city using nothing but his bionic arm as a grappling hook. Also featured in the trailer are heavily armoured soldiers and mech style vehicles, reminiscent of Lost Planet, another Capcom game, recently revealed to be on its way to the PS3.
The trailer would suggest that this one is set to be an action packed adventure game and I think Bionic Commando is a game we should all keep an eye on for the future.
