Following speculation on a number of different gaming sites about the number of cars that will feature in GT5, we contacted SCEE directly, to get some comment / confirmation from them.
“Despite news articles claiming that ‘SCEI/Polyphony Digital’ have made an official announcement with regards to GT5 featuring 1000 vehicles, we can confirm that this is pure speculation. It would appear that the list is a mixture of vehicles that were included in previous GT titles, coupled with somebody’s own fantasy garage.
Further details about GT5 will be announced in due course, but for the moment at least, we can confirm that the current car list/speculation, does not come from SCE.”
It would also appear that the site carrying the original story, has now confirmed the list is fake…

Al2x: they’re pingbacks, that means that other sites (linked below the comment) wrote on their own site in response to this post. The text you see is an extract of that post.

Well 1,000 vehicles is outlandish anyway, who woudl even believe that? In fact that sounds like 10x as many as would be realistic for a full retail game. I would even say that game might have less then 70 given the amount of time it takes per-vehicle.

All those rumors are false; everything I’ve read so far points to a smaller initial game, with add-ins to follow. It takes the guys of GT5 something like 8 months per car for modeling. There are surface texture differences, and other such now visual things which take up the 8 months. Maybe instead of waiting ~4 years per game, Polyphony will publish the initial game and use $ or something such as achievement points (already a rumored future PS3 addition) to get new vehicles and tracks. I’ll take episodic stuff like Valve is doing with Half-Life 2 if it means new GT5 stuff every year or so
