Sony have announced that a new PlayStation Portable, dubbed the PSP Slim & Lite, will launch in Europe (plus the US and Japan) in September.
The PSP Slim & Lite features a video-out port and new streamlined dimensions - it’s 33 percent lighter and 19 percent slimmer than the original version, is approx 189g in weight (weight of current model is approx.280g) and approx 18.6mm in thickness (thickness of current model is approx.23.0 mm). It will come in three main colours - “Piano Black”, “Ceramic White” and “Ice Silver”, plus three ‘pearlised light’ colors - “Felicia Blue”, “Lavender Purple” and “Rose Pink” - in what’s being called the “Blume series”.
The video-out port means the new PSP will allow users to experience UMD video, pictures and movies from Memory Stick Duo and game software titles on their TVs at home. It’s also equipped with an enhanced feature to temporarily store game data from UMDs, reducing load time during game play; plus the ability to charge the unit through a PlayStation 3 or PC via USB cable during data transfer.

Wow, too much information for today.
So there aren’t big differences in design. Great step to bring a better battery and reduced loading times. Nevertheless, I see no need to sell my old PSP to get a new one.

Excellent news!
Hope Sony will also release the GPS in Europe soon and just before I’ll go on vacation to Zwitserland

Looks awesome! But now my current PSP looks a bit bulky! Charging over USB - I like it!
Comment by reakt — Jul 11, 2007 @ 9:16 pm
Correct me if I’m wrong but from the pics, it looks like the psp isnt as shiny anymore but more matte…

and they put the speakers on top
Comment by Wardog — Jul 11, 2007 @ 9:33 pm
So… no changes to the awkward ergonomics then? Shame. I love my PSP, but holding it can become a bit difficult with the positioning of some of the buttons and analog.
And why did you have to put the video output in there? Now I want one! :p
Comment by Silent_Shark — Jul 11, 2007 @ 9:56 pm
i have been thinking about getting a psp for sometime now and seeing this i’m glad i waited. while not a huge change from the original it will be a good time for newbies like myself to get on the psp wagon.
Comment by aiko.adonia — Jul 11, 2007 @ 9:57 pm
A redesigned handheld with the name Slim & Lite? No, that doesn’t sound familiar at all.
With that said, this is timely news that has stopped me from buying a PSP. Looks like I’ll be picking up a redesigned model in future if European pricing is in line with the US and not a simple case of changing a dollar to a pound sign.
Comment by redzoo — Jul 11, 2007 @ 10:14 pm
Wow! I’m still waiting for someone to release something decent for the first one!
Comment by CyberRazor — Jul 11, 2007 @ 10:59 pm
VERY DISAPPOINTING
Well I ‘was’ considering purchasing the revised PSPLite prior to todays announcement… but upon seeing the changes it’s clearly not worth it.
I didn’t buy the original PSP because of the poor controls (d-pad and analogue stick sucks!) not to mention the poor UMD discs.
I had hoped for a bigger change: a new d-pad, 2 analogue sticks and ‘flash/memory/hdd/Downloadable’ games. Alas it wasn’t to be.
I’ll be spending my cash elsewhere.
Comment by Rogue Muffin — Jul 12, 2007 @ 2:27 am
Wow, will the current PSP be able to use Video Output, man, the IR was removed, so no iR Shell remote.
Comment by GameBox 47 — Jul 12, 2007 @ 2:36 am
But will TV out make its way to the older PSPs?
Comment by Extinction — Jul 12, 2007 @ 4:14 am
Nice. I reckon I might get this. How’s the battery life? Did they fix that?
Comment by Philbob — Jul 12, 2007 @ 6:50 am
hmm so lets get this streight:
-no dual analog nubs
-no touch screen
-no built in camera
-no built in gps
-no built in GBs of memory
sooo what were they working on all this time? video out!? the old firmware already had provisions for it(read about it somewhere)
thats it! who cares that its
19% slimmer
and about
33% lighter
anyway?!
Comment by chaitanya krishnan — Jul 12, 2007 @ 7:40 am
and i forgot… maybe this isnt relevant but hey,
when everyony making big screen devices is making them “touch screen” (forget about multi-touch, thats expecting too buch)
these guys didn’t think of adding that?!
Comment by chaitanya krishnan — Jul 12, 2007 @ 7:45 am
Been holding out on a PSP for a while. It’s my birthday in September - think I’ll buy into it now…
Comment by Mick — Jul 12, 2007 @ 9:42 am
Wow, on the day of the announcement I was talking to a friend about how I would get a PSP if I could play games on a TV. Looks like I am getting an PSP then.
Comment by Kamiboy — Jul 12, 2007 @ 9:51 am
No touch screen… no new button layout… no built-in camera… but an improved battery life. Whoopy-doodle-doo!
The Wi-Fi switch location has moved, the UMD drawer mechanism is less complex (meaning it is less bulky for the overall slim appearance), and the infrared port has been removed. Oh yes, and the 32Mb on-board RAM has been increased to 64Mb (no doubt to provide further cache space for faster loading, &/or to provide additional storage for future firmware releases).
I’m not so sure a lighter model is a good idea, to be honest. Having a heavier handheld device means you are less likely to forget it is in your hand, and drop it accidentally. And a larger device looks like it costs 200 dollars. The new UMD drive looks a bit fragile to say the least.
I never had a problem with the battery life, and if I did, I would just buy one of the many third-party battery extender products, a secondary battery that I’d keep charged for swapping with the dead one, or sit beside an electrical AC outlet socket & plug in whilst gaming.
And to think Sony wonders why the Nintendo DS is outselling the PSP!?!
Let’s hope the touted PSP2 is not far behind.
Furthermore, why, oh why, is the Darth Vadar Silkscreen variant in Ceramic White?
Erm, hello!
He represents the “Dark Side”!?!
If you are looking for a “fatline” PSP for that special someone (or ones) in your life for Christmas, you may well find a bargain surfacing on eBay later in the year.
Just don’t let your kids (whatever size they are) know about the new Darth Vadar model… but if they find out, then you can buy stickers for the old “fatline” model. Who’s to know?
Personally I’d go for the ‘Ice Silver’ slimline if I was having any of them.
As for the other colours; Felicia Blue, Lavender Purple, & Rose Pink… urgh!

fp.

Actually the most important improvement is that it can now cache game files while playing a game in order to reduce constant umd access. That decreases load time and reduces battery drain from running the UMD all of the time. That’s an improvement worth mentioning.

Interesting isn’t it how the DS Lite had everyone going “ZOMG ITS GORGEOUS!!!111″ and this slightly upgraded PSP has a negative effect.
Personally, I’m not that fussed by the upgraded PSP, but it’s a nice revision for the hardware for anyone who hasn’t already picked one up.
Comment by Pete Cullen — Jul 12, 2007 @ 2:51 pm
i find it odd that someone thinks that the reduced weight is a negative!
i hope to get one of these lighter PSPs. i already carry around so many gadgets, the less weight, the better.
Comment by bunnyhero — Jul 12, 2007 @ 4:32 pm
there is no PSP2 coming in another 3 years.
with over 25million PSP sold to consumers “not shipping number” the PSP is actually selling faster everywhere then the xbox360.
so don’t expect a PSP2 in 1 or 2 years but in 3 to 4 years.

Re: Duration of new model’s battery…
On an article host at DailyTech.com, Marcus Yam reports:
“Sony representatives also said PSP battery life increases to 8 to 10 hours in the new hardware, more than double the playtime of the current model.”

What I’m wondering is this:
Will the d-pad be significantly better than the current one?
Is the horrible ghosting on the screen gone for good?
If that’s a double yes, then I’ll be picking one up for that and the TV out.

I’ve been thinking about getting a psp, and I’m definetly gonna get one now that I could say “Yes, I have a psp, in fact it’s superior to yours” insted of “Yeah, I like your psp, I want a psp.”

I just got my psp half a year ago and love it. Personally, I like it’s weight, it makes it feel expensive lol. …But… Although the new upgraded version does have it’s perks, I still think Sony should just throw all of the advanced technology they can in it and do the handheld justice.
what I’d like to see:
More on board memory - flash based - 2 gigs (why not)
Internal flash based storage (at least 10 gigs (it is possible) + keep external memory available for on the go file transfers
scrap umd, it had it’s day, put all games to flash memory, it’s not like they can’t do it.
Use extra space where umd *used to go for ummm, let’s say digital camera - 5.1 mb min.
Touchscreen - hell ya! No more texting cellphone style! woohoo!
More powerfull processor, yes I know, more battery power required, but hey, let’s give Sony a challenge!
Second analog nub, just cause it’s usefull
Stronger wifi, go to at least 802.11g instead of b
Keep the infared, it is neat to have especially with homebrew
Built in sound equalizer with or with out headphones
Built in mic, why not.
The video out is a cool idea
As for that faster processor mentioned, if cooling is needed, then a micro low voltage brushless silent fan can be applied (ultra thin) - could go right where the umd used to go. - again more battery consumption, but hey, what the hell, my original battery for my psp lasts on average 6 to 7 hours with the screen at full brightness and wifi on full power and in use. Not bad I’d say.
If there was a way to add even a little bit more of the lower frequencies to the sound output, that would be great, because, despite how small the speakers have to be, they suck - no offense to Sony, I like there products, but ya.
All in all, if this could be done with todays technology, I think they should go for it, even if it is a lot of stuff to cram in it, why not?

I am so angry. The screen on mine broke a month ago (before I knew a new one was coming out) so with the warrenty, I got a new one for $80. Then they say, “Oh yah were coming out with a new one HA HA HA HA!” I like sony but this is killing me. I want a new one but I can’t seem so sell mine for for more than $100. It’s in friggin mint condition too.
