Hey, that looks like a brilliant FirMware update.
I’m really happy about being able to change settings ingame. It was a nuisance having to quit out of the game to do so, before. The browser improvements are also appreciated.
Comment by GleeDemon — Jul 23, 2007 @ 11:26 am
Sounds good, Hope they add the missing upscale option soon, keep ratio and fit to width. so that all those ps2 games with black bars top and bottom become full screen rather than a box in the middle or really stretched. that and be able to get the message alerts when in ps2 games so I can play them while waiting for buddies to get online for some multiplayer gaming.
Comment by ken — Jul 23, 2007 @ 11:29 am
Some nice little changes. You can bet 2.0 will include Home, and possibly ingame XMB.
Comment by Ben Furneaux — Jul 23, 2007 @ 11:39 am
Good update Sony, you seem to be pumping out some good updates for the PS3. Would like to know what the “Add bookmarks” thing is about, since the web browser has that ability already
Comment by Jay — Jul 23, 2007 @ 11:39 am
I’d actually like to see support for Lossless .WAV music! Almost my entire collection is in that and now that I’ve finally upgraded my entire network to gigabit, I’d like even my PS3 to be able to enjoy those large files.
If it was even possible, maybe even streaming of full DVD .ISO’s from a home server? PLEASE!?!? Just a suggestion though.
I’m actually very impressed with how quickly you’re able to come out with updates and how frequently you actually send them out. You actually inccorporate new features alot quicker than Xbox, and also come out with many more everytime you do an update.
THANKS!
Comment by Paulie Fresh — Jul 23, 2007 @ 12:02 pm
Maybe the ‘add bookmarks’ is actually RSS feeds? That was rumoured to be included I believe.
Comment by JB — Jul 23, 2007 @ 12:04 pm
Dear Sony,
If I don’t get cross game invites, in-game XMB, and the ability to message and open a chat during gameplay - I will stick my PS3 up your collective bungholes.
Comment by russ — Jul 23, 2007 @ 12:29 pm
At last forced 1080p24 for Blu-Ray !!!!
This is only right that Sony include this as the Sony standalone players already have this feature.
Strange there is no mention of this update on the PS3 blog though.

Another great incremental update. The good stuff will surely be reserved for 2.0
However, this is another significant update, and much more substantial and regular than Microsoft’s updates.
Nice one Sony…
Comment by Mark Gillespie — Jul 23, 2007 @ 12:50 pm
Well, good job, but I’m waitting for the integration between XMB and online gameing
Comment by Roger — Jul 23, 2007 @ 12:52 pm
Nice, one of the features I like to see is that when I stop dvd /shutdown the PS3 player the next time I repower/start the DVD it picks up where I ended it.
My Sony DVD player does it
- watch episode/movie
- stop/shutdown
- some minutes/hours/whatever later
- startup
- episode/movie starts where I ended it.
I find it a very handy feature that I miss on my PS3 !

@russ
Go and buy a Xbox, it’s obvious that’s what you want… More than likely however, you already have one, and are simply here trolling.

Good update but would like to see ingame XMB access but like most people have said i imagine it’ll be in for the 2.0 upgrade!

Another good update.
I have a feeling the magical 2.0 update is a month or two away which will offer the mythical in game xmb though.

2.0 will NOT include home to who ever said that it might there is no chance home is set for september but personaly i would be happy any time before november if you set your hopes for november you will not be diserpointed and yes the 1.9 should be good fun and i hope the xmb backgrounds means what i think it does

If this update is real, then I truly doubt that
in-game XMB is far far away. Because this is FW 1.9, in-game XMB would probably be an extremely large increment. It wouldn’t go from 1.9 - 2.0, it would probably go from something like 1.9 - 2.4
Comment by dMcnabb92 — Jul 23, 2007 @ 2:22 pm
*my bad, i meant to write that i believe in-game XMB is really far away
Comment by dMcnabb92 — Jul 23, 2007 @ 2:23 pm
What kind of faggorty is ejecting the game using the triangle button? You still got to pull the disc out of the machine?
WASTE OF TIME!
Comment by Madness3120 — Jul 23, 2007 @ 2:33 pm
What I still miss in this update, are new visualizations for the music player! A few weeks ago, I saw what Jeff Minter made on the X360 (called the Neon Lightsynth), and it makes the PS3 with it’s current visualization pale in comparison…
I really would like to see an option that makes it possible to use visualization plug-ins, just like Winamp.
Now I still have to use my computer to have some Geiss or Milkdrop action on my living-room LCD. The guy who wrote those visuals, Ryan Geiss, used to work for NVidia to make graphical demonstrations for the newest GPU’s. On his weblog (www.geisswerks.com) you can read that he is currently unemployed, so I say: let him start working on a fantastic, psychedelic, freaky PS3 visualization!

Thanks for force 24Hz.(now i can buy ps3)
But i still have to wait for specific tv to be released.
Comment by Raitzi — Jul 23, 2007 @ 3:35 pm
Scrplnd i agree, i use also a dvi screen with this resolution.
In addition, it will be good to have support for :
avi
mkv with subtitle
mpeg 4 (which isn’t mpeg 4 avc)
mpeg 4 avc(h.264) High profile (and not just the main profile)
and an xv or xvmc driver for ps3 linux side, with the same support for the 1680×1050 resolution.
It’s good to dream sometime

Sony may not be forthcoming with the games, but they are no slouch in ensuring their machine is up to date and clearly the most competent on the market.
With Heavenly Sword demo on thursday, it’s a big step foward on the games front, too.

[...] Emoticons and XMB backgrounds all in one day? While that’s great for Japanese PS3 owners, ThreeSpeech says the update will be available in Europe tomorrow, SCEA’s Patrick Seybold has said we can expect news on the firmware “early [this] week”, and PSN’s Eric Lampel said the update is “coming soon.” We’ll be sure to give you a full rundown of the (real) release notes as soon as we find ‘em. Thank you for the update.
However:
I got my 60 GB PS3 on May tenth and so far I have not been able to login to the PS-Store since every time I tried I got the network busy error code.
I had a look at editing my account information but pertinent webpage information tells me that I have to be logged in to do so and I have no real way of knowing if any of my tries to create a PS-Store account worked since I have never gotten further than the page where it asks for my birthdate.
Geez how can I edit or check my account info if it NEVER, ever lets me log-in? (yes I tried triangle in the Friends and it tells me I have to sign up for an account)
I tried customer support and they had me play with the modem, router, etc. and still nothing.
I just find it strange that I can post from my PS3 and yet its unable to log-in to the PS-Store.
Well I am also going to try posting this on the PS blog in the hopes that a future firmware update will fix this problem.
Things we want!:
Dolby Digital 5.1
Support for .mov apple trailers.
Support for .mkv files!
Support for inputting our landline HOME telephone number for PS-Store verification instead of the registration circus that you now have.
Support for our SONY! brand home theater amps that have 7.1 ability yet are FORCED to play stereo when a PS3 High Definition movie trailer is playing.
Thank you.
R. E. Burrows.

Great update, nice to see Sony is really working to please us, the gamers :).
But you know what they say, the more you get the more you want so here is what I’d love to see in the near future:
- Some way to dowload demos via PC to memory stick and then install; I know this presents many challenges, but I think it’s possible.
- Background downloads while playing PS2 or watching DVD/Blu-ray. Even if downloads get slower because of low resources.
- AVI and other video formats. I don’t know how much it costs to license, but I’m certain that Sony can cut a good deal since it will be mass distributed, also, I know must of us are willing to pay for it as long as it reasonable.

I have to say the communication from the playstation team is brilliant! .. thanks for all the info! and it is great the way you keep updating the system! thank you.
What about being able to share content to other PS3 owners across the PS3 network .. sending photos and videos .. or can this be done? and what about Video conferancing across the network, when the new webcam comes out. thanks again .. its a great system!
Comment by SeanC — Jul 25, 2007 @ 4:20 pm
I still don’t understand where this all started from. The firmware was NOT out in Japan until we got it as well. Despite what many think:
1) All regions have the same firmware image. Sony can say what they want, but a matching md5 sum is proof.
2) All regions get it at the same time. I have the URLs but I won’t give them out. Trust me, if Japan had 1.90 a day early, I would have too
Comment by zefie — Jul 26, 2007 @ 7:18 pm
I’m disappointed with the ‘re-arrange’ facility. I thought I’d be able to put all those games and demos that are irritatingly noisy (Lemmings, Blast Factor etc.) or change background to something garish (Tekken, Mortal Kombat 2) at the bottom, out of the way, and move the quiet, subtle ones to the top.
I also thought there might be a way to separate demos from downloaded games.
Instead, all we got was two new ways to order them - sort by reverse date and sort by type.
Pathetic.

hey guys do you think we could get some security features for the xmb. like a master account that can create other accounts all with password security i’m sick of my brothers buddies playing through my games and advancing my savepoints
Comment by ahmon ra — Aug 10, 2007 @ 11:12 pm
My biggest bug bear is the visualisations in the media player.. I remember the one on the PS1 which if cruder graphically was way more dynamic to watch. I can only hope the new ones available on PSP make their way acriss but would hope for more.
Also my system is refusing to play lossless audio and instead gives me Dolby D or EX etc.. what setting do I need to use in the PS3 to access. My a\v is full lossless - brand new Onkyo TX605 7.1 hdmi.
I would also like to access different animateed backgrounds.. underwater, in space, burning flames, artic, surise, flying over mountains.. that sort of thing.
I use my PS3 more for multi-media than for games so this would help immensely. I don’t plan to use Home so a more convetional solution would be nice.
also some sort of upgrade to tell the PS3 to pipe down and not make so much blimming noise..
anyone got a list of what to set the settings to - to make advantage of the latest firmware?
Cheers
Jon
